I just genuinely love hanging out with this guy so much. It was awesome to hear about the parallels between my approach to doing improvised concerts and Rick's approach to editing and animating his podcast. The Frugal Film Project is a collective photography challenge to help reign in the cost of photography. Starting in 2018, it encourages using budget cameras, lenses, and film over a year. The framework in which those participating work includes a camera/lens that costs no more than 75$ (USD) and a relatively inexpensive film (no Portra). And shooting one roll of film a month. Bill has been participating in this for several years now. This year marked the first time Alex joined in, so we're bringing in a small cross-section of those who participated in a couple of chats on today's episode. This is the first time CCR has done a round-table 'open source' style episode, so it is split into two parts recorded on two separate days. Looking back at past episodes of the show, there are a few memorable ones, not necessarily for anything myself or the other hosts contributed, but rather from some of our esteemed guests.  Of those esteemed guests, one that consistently piles on great information and awesome anecdotes about our hobby is Robert Shanebrook.  A former employee of Eastman Kodak who while working there did everything from build cameras that went to the moon, to helping create some of the company's best film emulsions ever made, even some like TMax which are still being made today. With an incredible wealth of knowledge about Kodak's past and present, Robert still has his fingers on the pulse of the company and the industry and can often give insightful comments on where the industry is headed, so any time Robert agrees to join us, you know you're in for a ton of great information! Joining him on this show is returning guest Mina Saleeb and first time caller Jesse Wisdom.  Of course, joining Robert, Mina, and Jesse are the four horsemen of the world's first and only open source film photography podcast, Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike! In this episode, Robert shares his insights into Kodak's recent announcement of their intent to keep making film for as long as there is demand, and what exactly that means for the film community.  Robert reminisces on his days torture testing film and all of the great lengths Eastman Kodak went to making sure only the best film made it to your cameras, he talks about regional films, and a few more memorable film emulsions like Verichrome III and Supra. In addition, Jesse shares his passion for instant film photography and we learn of some history behind Polaroid's lawsuit against Kodak in the 1980s, and how if it weren't for Kodak, Polaroid might have never existed. Mike brings up his Kodak Aero-Ektar surveillance lens, and two recent pickups, a LOMO LC-Wide and W-Nikkor 2.5cm f/4 rangefinder lens.  Anthony shares his experience going to a recent KEH film event in Atlanta and how there is a clear disconnect between younger film enthusiasts and the older generation.  Jesse takes a stand and says that we need to connect the two groups of people as each can benefit from talking to another, but young people don't go on Facebook and old farts don't go on Discord. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, we are devoting the entire show to Yashica.  From the earliest Yashica TLRs to Nicca rangefinders to screw mount Yashica SLRs to the final Contax/Kyocera/Yashica SLRs, we plan on covering the entire output of this once great Japanese camera maker.  To help us traverse Yashica's long history, we will be joined by not one, but two Yashica experts who are certain to share with us a great deal of Yashica history and GAS!  If you've ever had any questions about your Yashica Electro or Samurai, this is the episode you won't want to miss, so be sure to join us on Monday, October 30th for the recording of Episode 58! Eric shot some Kodak TMax 100, expired in 1991. And because of this, we talk a bit about what we were doing that year. We've forgotten a lot. Meanwhile, Vania shot some Portra 160, also through the Mamiya RB67. Vania lets slip her complete lack of memory when it comes to 90s game shows. Eric developed his film in 510Pyro 1+100 for 11.5mins. Here are a few of his: Vania went with C-41. And here are her shots: Right in the middle, we play a few minutes of an interview we did with Taylor (@taylarlar on IG) and Kate Miller-Wilson (@katemillerwilson on IG) about the “ethics” of moving stuff around for a better photo when visiting abandoned places. This episode is all about Kodak's recent price increases: Why'd they do it? How high will they get? And what the hell do we do now? But it's not just us who will be talking – we asked a few former guests and some friends of the show their thoughts on it. There's also the answering machine, Tiffen Sinclair, Autochromes, and zine reviews. Kodak's Price Increases Kodak recently announced that starting in January 2022, they'd be raising the prices on nearly all of their film. Well, they didn't exactly announce. They emailed the stores who buy directly from them and the news leaked out. This follows a roughly 20% increase from last year, a similar increase the year before that, and a 10% price hike for 2018. To put things in a bit of perspective, a five-pack of Portra 400 in 120 cost $29 in 2018. As of now, it's $55, so come January, that same pack will be closing in on $70. In less than four years, the price of Portra will have more than doubled. Quite a lot of film has. So we got to wondering – what do some of the friends of the show have to say about the price increases? How are they dealing with it? And how will it affect their work going forward? We talked to Brandy B, Charley Camugila, Danielle Wrobleski, Hannah Grace, Jamie Maldinado, and Kat Swansey and got their takes on all of this.

Kevin, Steven, and Bill share their Christmas wishlist items. Bill and Steven talk about their experiences shooting FujiFilm Pro 400h, Kodak Ektar 100, and Portra 400 in the snow. One of those didn't come out as expected. Nikon has announced they're servicing various Nikon manual focus SLRs and Lenses.  Silberra has Indiegogo updates, and Kodak has launched the highly anticipated motion picture film business cards.   Show Notes: Georgia has received the most snow since 1993. Areas accumulating as much as 8-10 inches. This was a prime opportunity for Bill and Steven to go out and #shootsomefilmdangit. Turns out FujiFilm Pro 400h doesn't handle overcast days very well and resulted in some really grainy images, even when the exposure compensation was adjusted 2 additional stops. The Ektar 100 resulted in some incredibly sharp images and handled the snow exposure very nicely. Silberra Update! Silberra has sent out an email to their IndieGoGo backers that they are starting to fufill their December items very shortly. At the time of the recording, they haven't received the funds. They didn't meet their goals, however they've anticipated this and are moving to 'Plan B' which is to outsource their film manufacturing process. Nikon has announced for a limited time only, they will be servicing the old Nikon F, manual focus SLRs and lenses. To our understanding, Nikon Japan is the only one this service is available to. Details outlining what exactly is being fixed can be found here: https://petapixel.com/2017/12/09/nikon-servicing-vintage-cameras-lenses-japan-limited-time/ Kodak has launched their Film Strip Creator product and service. CEO Jeff Clarke has been using business cards that are a form of motion picture projector film. It has gained incredible popularity and is now available to the consumers. https://filmstripcreator.com/ The Studio C-41 website is live! Just like you, Marie Forleo started her business with nothing more than a laptop and a dream. Now she commands a socially-conscious digital empire that touches millions of people, and makes millions of dollars. In this episode we’re going to talk with Marie and get some little-known insight into how she created such a remarkable business, a business that has allowed her to design the life she always wanted to live. Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Spiritual Foundations Recently I did a podcast on the truth about Parkinson's. I've received lots of responses, which has been a real blessing because I think it has helped a lot of people. I think there's an opportunity for us to use our circumstances, whether good or bad, to advance the gospel…the Good News. In Philippians 1:12 the Apostle Paul says, “Now, I want you to know brothers that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.” It would serve us well to remember that Paul was a businessman…he was a tent maker. As far as I can tell, this was not something that he did just because it was an easy way to make money. It required skill, and he did it because he didn't want to rely on the church for his income. He took it seriously. He had an overall ministry objective for his business, and that meant that sometimes he was thrown in prison, he was persecuted, he was beaten. It’s easy to be a shining example of God’s grace when everything is rosy, but when things get tough most people want to give up and quit. When things get stormy and rough we go through periods where maybe we're tempted to say, “I don't even know why I’m doing this, it just seems pointless.” First off, remember that God didn’t cause these things to happen to you. There is an enemy that seeks to steal, kill, and destroy…but a loving Father that wants you to have an abundant life (John 10:10). Your temporary negative circumstances can be used to advance the Kingdom, to bring more of the reality of God to the world around you, to transcend your circumstances and transform them into something that is in your favor and to your advantage. I think our friend Paul serves as a good example of that. Selah. (Think about it.) Tip of the Week It's time for me to convince you to spend money on an app, and I’m playing no favorites this week. The app is called PORTRA and it’s available for both iOS users and Android people. There are a lot of apps out there that will put your photos through an art filter, but I've never seen anything that does as a good job as PORTRA. They really do look like paintings, it’s pretty amazing. I also have a little secret tip for you. If you use a high-resolution photo to do this, you could take that resulting artwork and send it off to fractureme.com. These people will print your photos on glass, which just amplifies the cool factor. You could use PORTRA to make a very unique photo into something that looks like a work of art, and then have it printed on glass and it would be a very groovy gift. Check it out, I think you're going to like it. Feature Presentation: “The One With Marie Forleo” Marie Forleo has an award-winning show called Marie TV, which when it first started up, I thought, “Oh, come on. Really?” And now she's like Oprah on the Internet. She's got a world-class online training program called B-School. She also has a book that's in 16 languages, and an audience in 195 countries. Marie helps people dream big and then back it up with meaningful action to get results, and she's also an extraordinary copywriter. Up until very recently, she wrote every word of copy that you saw come out of her business, which I think is just amazing. So, let's get into it. Here are some snippets from our conversation: Persuade with Purpose – Marie reveals the absolutely vital skill you must learn to authentically communicate with your audience (10:58) Achieving copy consciousness – The surprising way that your everyday world can become a copywriting classroom (12:55) Fail in public – Why allowing your tribe to watch your progression serves as both inspiration and education (14:34) Look spontaneous and brilliant – Marie talks about the importance of taking the time to really understand your audience and craft complete comprehensive answers to their questions (16:23) The fine line of web design – Marie discusses the value of intertwining copy and simple, clean design that causes your audience to become emotionally engaged with your brand (17:25) Sales doesn’t have to be slimy – Why modern marketing, which includes generosity, compassion, and value is the key to overcoming the fear of sales (21:11) The virus that’s killing your business – Why learning the art of writing copy is the single most powerful tool you have to grow a healthy, robust enterprise (24:22) Your voice matters – Should you write your own copy, or should you hire someone to do it for you? Marie tackles this question and provides a unique and wise perspective (26:46) The Steven Spielberg Test – Marie shares a way to check whether your copy is too ambiguous…is your copy so specific and clear that if Steven Spielberg read it he could make a scene from it that comes to life? (31:39) Get out of your head – Marie reminds us that when people buy they make emotional decisions, not logical ones, and that our copy not only needs to make sense, it needs to touch their heart (33:55) Manipulation vs Persuasion – Why the way you craft your offer makes the difference between adding value and taking advantage (35:02) Are you Luke Skywalker or Yoda? – There can only be one hero in a story. The key to writing copy that gets acted upon is to remember that your customer is the hero. They are Luke Skywalker, you are Yoda.
