The ROI of changing language to be more inclusive.Kim, Jason, and Amy discuss the importance of using inclusive language and the impact of non-inclusive language, often dismissed as being "too sensitive.” They explore the concept of "red words," terms that can shut down communication by triggering negative reactions, and emphasize that good communication is measured by its impact on the listener. They share personal anecdotes illustrating how specific words can cause offense and stress the importance of being mindful of the language used to foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding. The episode also delves into the resistance some people have to changing their language and how acknowledging and adapting to others' sensitivities can significantly improve communication and relationships.Get all of the show notes at RadicalCandor.com/podcast.Episode Links: The Word Police: Have We Become Too Sensitive? | Radical Respect Newsletter Beyond 'Sorry': How to Apologize and Mean It 6 | 22 | Radical Candor Connect: Website Instagram TikTok LinkedIn Facebook X YouTube Chapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionKim, Jason and Amy introduce the episode, a discussion on the impact of non-inclusive language.(00:0:33) The Impact of 'Red Words'The concept of "red words," phrases that trigger negative reactions and shut down communication.(00:04:32) The Effect of WordsHow certain words can create different responses and understanding these reactions.(00:07:19) Addressing Non-Inclusive Language in EmailsNon-inclusive language in emails and how it can be handled to avoid excluding team members.(00:08:59) Handling Public Criticism and CorrectionA story about receiving feedback on social media, and the importance of accepting corrections publicly.(00:11:18) ROI of Inclusive LanguageThe ROI of changing language to be more inclusive.(00:14:58) Overcoming Resistance and Acknowledging BiasWhy some people resist changing their language, and acknowledging and addressing biases.(00:17:46) Current Relevance of Biased LanguageCurrent issues with language in society, emphasizing the need to avoid perpetuating harmful behaviors.(00:20:47) The Impact of Words on RelationshipsThe role of words in building respectful environments and how using the right language can enhance relationships.(00:26:19) Apologizing for Language MistakesHow to handle mistakes in... On this week's episode of In The Circle, Brian asks an incredibly profound question: Can a person change their personality? He goes on to explain that the origin of his inquiry is due to his use of sarcasm and how he does not want to speak in that same tone with that same sharpness, especially to those he loves. As someone who grew up in New York City, I'm well-trained in sarcasm, and this inquiry hit home for me. This naturally leads us to a powerful discussion about the nature of personality and whether we can change our deeply ingrained patterns, or if we are set in our ways forever.Tommy discussesCan you change your personality? The power of your wordsHow to change your mind with morning practiceThe origins of sarcasm and upgrading your language Looking for a way to deepen your recovery journey and meet others in the Recovery 2.0 community? On episode 139 of The Diet Diaries I'm talking about what progress looks like beyond the numbers. Beyond the scale, the clothing size and the tape measure. Because I'd argue that's where the real work happens. That's where behavior is transformed, where the self trust is built, where the skills are learned. The numbers are a byproduct of all of that. I've had several clients finish up personalized coaching after 4-14 months of work and their transformations have been incredible to witness. I hope this episode shows you that the transformations you can't see are actually the most powerful. In today's episode you'll hear:How to spot the difference between fixed mindset and growth mindsetWays to measure progress without numbersFormer clients' progress in their own wordsHow long progress takesThe one thing you need to get started How to know if you are making progressHow to identify your limiting beliefs and storiesIf you're ready to believe that change is possible for you, that's all you need to get started. Song title: Your SongSong written and performed by: Elton JohnCover version: Cissy HoustonPodcast Vocals: Gail NoblesPhoto credit: By Tom Marcello Webster, New York, USA - Cissy Houston, Usage: CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3856773Hello! Today I'm going to talk about Whitney Houston's mom on the Whitney Soul Podcast. Ms. Cissy Houston you know was the mom of Whitney Houston. She taught Whitney how to sing. Sounds like Ms. Houston took some time out for Whitney and taught her how to do a good thing.Whitney Houston's mom was also a singer. There is one song I heard her mom sing on record the other day that put tears in my eyes. It was Elton John's “Your Song”. You might be more familiar with the way Elton John sings it.It's a little bit funnyThis feeling insideI'm not one of those who can easily hideI don't have much money, but boy if I didI'd buy a big house where we both could live ...I hope you don't mindI hope you don't mindThat I put down in the wordsHow wonderful life is while you're in the worldBut , you know Ms. Houston had her way of singing it. She had a church style way of singing it. I can't sing it the way Ms. Houston sings it, and I can't play it the way the musicians play it, but it goes something like this to give you an idea. (Singing)That's just an example without playing and singing note for note the way Ms. Houston did. Later on in the song, the choir would come in and back Ms. Houston up. (Singing)Ms. Emily "Cissy” Houston is a great American soul and gospel singer. After a successful career singing backup for such artists as Roy Hamilton, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin, Ms. Houston embarked on a solo career, winning two Grammy Awards for her work. Ms. Houston is the mother of singer Whitney Houston, grandmother of Bobbi Kristina Brown, aunt of singers Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick.Cissy Houston's soul cover version of Elton John's “Your Song” is on her 2nd studio album "Cissy Houston” released in 1977. I'm Gail Nobles, and you're listening to the Whitney Soul Podcast. …..
The number one topic I coach on is relationships. Mother-child relationships, marriages, and difficult relationships with bosses, colleagues, friends and extended family members. Relationships are such a huge part of our emotional health. Today's topic has to do with communication in relationships; learning to say what we mean and mean what we say. We often think we are communicating clearly but we say one thing and mean another. This causes all sorts of confusion, resentment and frustration. There are a few simple changes we can make to communicate more clearly. What you'll learn on the show:Why sometimes we say one thing when we really mean anotherWhat it means to own our wordsHow to own our wordsHow intercultural situations amplify the issue of miscommunication when we don't say what we meanLearn the impact of not owning our wordsConnect with me!What's a time that you owned or didn't own your words?Tell me on Instagram.
