Kat Chow was 13 when her mother died, and with that loss came profound and lasting questions about identity, family and history. In her memoir, Seeing Ghosts, the author and former Code Switch reporter explores how her mother's death has haunted her through the years, in ways that are profound, tragic and, sometimes, darkly hilarious.

A report published by US-based the World Peace Foundation stresses the looming famine disaster in Ethiopia's Tigray if the fighting does not stop.Since the first foray into the Tigray by the Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa back in November, the following months have seen an entirely man-made humanitarian crisis unfold. This report documents how both Ethiopian and Eritrean elements in this Tigray war have single-handedly dismantled the region's economic and food system. But this can be stopped if the majority of the Tigrayan people, many of whom are are smallholder farmers, are able to farm in time for the rains in June. For more on the report's findings, we speak to Alex de Waal, the executive director of the WFP in this week's podcast with Patrick Smith.
Putting your time to its best use is all about leverage, and there's no better way of doing it than to employ the use of Virtual Assistants (VAs) in order to make the most of your life and your income. In this week's '15 Minutes To Action' show, Nick tells you all about how to make the best use of this incredible resource. KEY TAKEAWAYS Leveraging the skills of other people gives you a super-power of sorts, and the costs aren't as prohibitive as you think. Remember that you are investing in making your output as streamlined and efficient as possible. Be really clear on why you need to hire a virtual assistant. Ascertain if this really will save you time and money. Think about the impact this will have on your business. Over the course of a week, take notes on the tasks you're doing, and how long they're taking you to complete. You may be surprised at how much of your time is taken up by tasks that can be easily handed off. There are parts of the world in which the costs of living are significantly lower than in the Western world. This means that you can find VAs at a much more affordable rate. BEST MOMENTS 'I adore systems and processes and the ability to be able to leverage certain tasks' 'Seeing the opportunities is massive. That's what you need to scale' 'Time is more valuable than money!' The Unites States remains unusually religious as a country, but the issue of American racism is inextricably, and very problematically, related to its theological past. The history of white American Christianity is replete with biblical mandates for a racist system, and this may well have wider explanatory implications for police violence against non-white people and the strange incapacity of white people to 'see' elements of 'systemic racism' in the culture at large.Join Sarah Coakley as she explores some of the uncomfortable truths about the historic power of Christianity in the US, and the importance of both theological and philosophical analyses of the 'problem of seeing' what is happening in a racist culture.Speaker: Revd Professor Sarah Coakley FBA, Professorial Fellow, Australian Catholic University; Honorary Professor, University of St Andrews; Honorary Fellow, Oriel College, University of Oxford; Norris-Hulse Professor Emeria, University of Cambridge Episode Image Credit: Joy Powell / AFP / Stringer via Getty Images.Transcript: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/podcasts/10-minute-talks-racism-and-religion-in-america-sin-and-the-elusive-problem-of-seeing/

This week, Nicky Hutchings concludes our series 'You Will do Great Things' with her talk 'Seeing the Discipled Multiply'. Apologies for the technical difficulties we had this week which meant part of Nicky's talk was cut out.
In one of our special "2x" episodes of 16 Minutes (32ish minutes;) -- our show where we quickly cover the headlines and tech trends, offering analysis, frameworks, explainers, and more -- we cover the algorithm that powers TikTok, the short video-sharing platform that grabbed massive marketshare in cultures and markets never experienced firsthand by the engineers and designers in China, beating out other apps in the United States. Now, with talk of U.S. ownership/partnership for TikTok, what happens if the algorithm isn't included in the deal? And what can we learn from the "creativity network effects" flywheel of TikTok; for "algorithm friendly" product design; and more broadly, about the future of video? The news: Given the U.S. government calling for TikTok's business to be sold to U.S. owners last month, and several bidders coming in since, the latest news was that Oracle Corporation and Bytedance are hammering out an agreement for the former to be TikTok's "trusted tech partner" in the U.S. This could include (as reported by Axios) their exclusive ability to oversee all tech operations for TikTok in the U.S., including access and control of U.S. user data; ability to review source code and all updates to software for security vulnerabilities; and separate boards and entities for ensuring compliance with CFIUS/ U.S. policies (and for allowing ownership stakes for Oracle, with Walmart). The deal hasn't been approved yet [as of September 18, 2020].The episode: But since this show is focused on where we are on the long arc of innovation, and what's hype/ what's real when it comes to tech trends & the news, where does the source code (and more specifically, the "For You Page" algorithm) -- which may or may not be included in the deal due to China's revised export controls -- come in? Yet it's not just about if TikTok is really TikTok without it, or whether "the algorithm" and machine learning training data can be recreated... the real question is: How does the "creativity network effects" flywheel work between video creation and distribution -- from origination to mutation to dissemination? It boils down to the idea of "algorithm friendly design", observes Eugene Wei, who has written a series of deep dives on TikTok, and formerly led product at Hulu, Flipboard, and video at Oculus, among other things. So what does TikTok, regardless of deal outcome, suggest about the future of product development, and more broadly, the future of video? However, as these technologies have developed and the number of use cases have grown, an increasing number of sectors, from health services to product development, are beginning to harness the potential of VR and AR. Jeremy Dalton, a VR and AR specialist, and Ryan Hamilton, a PwC economist, join Freddie Martin in the studio to discuss the impact that VR and AR will have on the UK economy and give advice for businesses looking to adopt these technologies. To find out more, please visit PwC's virtual reality page, where you can download a copy of our 'Seeing is Believing' report and explore the results of the analysis mentioned in this episode: https://www.pwc.co.uk/issues/intelligent-digital/virtual-reality-vr.htmlIf you'd like more information on the solutions VR and AR are providing throughout the COVID-19 crisis, you can listen to ‘PwC's Business in Focus podcast' episode with Jeremy here: https://pwc.to/2AEDUPu
Soccer Laduma Radio — Former Orlando Pirates & Kaizer Chiefs youth player Mihlali Mayambela has just completed his loan spell with Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv F.C. in Israel and will return to his parent club SC Farense in Portugal. There he will compete for a place in Coach Jorge Paixao's side. The team have just been promoted to the top flight of Portuguese football. Speaking on SL Radio’s Players Abroad podcast, Mayambela revealed some of the struggles he’s experienced in the second half of the season, including his injury and missing home; “The main focus is on the injury, I didn’t heal properly because of the coronavirus, so now I’m trying my best to get the best treatment and get back to playing football.” When asked if there was something his older brother Mark could send to him in Portugal, Mayambela spoke candidly about his family, stating “maybe if he could sneak in my son, so I could see him. My son and himself, that would do me good for the year.”

'Seeing and Believing' goes to infinity and beyond this week with two much-anticipated reviews. First up is their take on 'Toy Story 4'. Directed by Josh Cooley. In their second segment, the duo continues their "Summer of Stan" review series with a look at Stanley Kubrick's 1968 science-fiction classic, '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Does it still hold up after all these years? And, just what do we make of those apelike creatures? Existential questions abound on this week's episode of 'Seeing and Believing'!
My interview on Julie Lee's I See You Podcast. From Julie's show notes: "Joined by The Virtual Couch's Tony Overbay, today we are talking all about marriage! 'Seeing' your spouse with compassion and connection are key in saving a marriage. Tony, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is here to teach us about EFT, gas-lighting, and creating safe relationships." Julie was a guest on The Virtual Couch episode 123 where she talks about her own journey with battling anxiety and depression. Julie and I switched interviewer/interviewee roles a couple of weeks later and she asked me a lot of questions about what to do when your marriage is hurting? I highly recommend this episode for anyone who may be struggling in their marriages, or for anyone married, or in a relationship in general as we talk about a lot of concepts and tools that I believe would be helpful for anyone to know to have a healthier connection, and more quality communication, with a partner. What is Judaism? It is a way of thinking, a constellation of ideas: a way of understanding the world and our place within it. Judaism contains life-changing ideas. Each week as part of his Covenant & Conversation series for 5778, Rabbi Sacks will explore a single life-changing idea in the Hebrew Bible. You can download a written version of his commentary from www.RabbiSacks.org. Covenant and Conversation 5778 is kindly supported by the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation in memory of Maurice and Vivienne Wohl z”l.
As a people of faith, we are called to be counter-cultural, to proclaim truth that lies beyond the realms of what our culture says is true or not. Let’s confirm ourselves in that faith and, meeting the risen Jesus, declare like Thomas, ‘My Lord and my God.’ And let’s have the confidence to take that faith into those places where others will question, doubt, even ridicule and know that the risen Christ is there with us - our Lord and our God!
'Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.' Hebrews 4:14-16 It’s not a sin to ask, “why?” God came to earth in the form of Christ and experienced the pain and darkness and difficulty that we experience. He understands. Don’t blame God, trust Him.

Looking back over the twentieth century we can see many examples of utopian schemes which have inadvertently brought disruption to millions; from compulsory ‘extended family’ villages in Tanzania, collectivisation in Russia, Le Corbusier’s urban planning, the Great Leap Forward in China and agricultural ‘modernization’ in the tropics. Why do well-intentioned plans for improving the human condition go tragically awry? Drawing upon his highly original book of the same title, and his long-term work in South East Asia (Burma in particular), Professor Scott helps us to understand how potentially harmful “state-spaces” are constructed. He shows how large-scale authoritarian schemes fail through the violence which they impose upon complex interdependencies which cannot be fully understood. He suggests that design for successful social organisation – like cities – depends on the recognition that local, practical, knowledge is as important as formal, abstract, knowledge in addressing the challenges which we now face.
