I'm delighted to bring you today's guest, the insightful Adam Ashton. If you have a thirst for knowledge, you're in for a treat! Adam is one half of the amazing team behind “What You Will Learn,” Australia's top book podcast. Alongside Adam Jones, they've captivated millions with over 400 episodes discussing the books they've read. They've also penned two best-sellers, with the second titled "Attitude" (you'll find links in the notes). My introduction to Adam's podcast was during a peaceful drive in Panama. The engaging talks about books were a perfect match for my love of reading, and soon I was hooked! I listened to episode after episode and found myself adding books to my reading list. Eager to chat about books, I reached out, and to my joy, Adam Ashton agreed to join us today! With a diverse background in physiotherapy, economics, finance, and digital marketing, Adam turned to books to seek answers to life's questions. His favorite books have not only broadened his knowledge but also helped him understand himself and the world. Today, Adam shares his love for reading and how it led him to create “What You Will Learn.” He believes books are often overlooked treasures that hold simple yet life-changing wisdom. Looking for happiness? Adam shares insights from books that reveal keys to happiness through connections, meaningful work, and understanding values. Adam also talks about passion, hard work, and staying committed - themes that are common in many books and crucial for success. He delves into different mindsets and explains how they can shape our approach to work and life. Public speaking fans, take note! Adam discusses how speaking skills can be highly valuable and even touches upon the fascinating concept of the “Halo Effect.” We also explore the powerful impact of writing and how it can be a tool for personal growth. Adam's advice for all of us is to take action, embrace new opportunities, and stay open to learning. Speaking with Adam was truly inspiring. Today in the Book Lounge, Tom & Karin discuss the book The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson with special guest Adam Ashton. Each week Book Insights creator and author of The 50 Classics Series Tom Butler-Bowdon and Memo'd Program Manager Karin Richey invite you to join their fun and casual conversation about the book of the week. Hear what they love it about, what they don't, how they rate it, and how it can advance your work and life. You'll learn why it was selected to be part of the curated list of Book Insights, and what's new with the book or the author currently. This week, Tom and Karin offer you insight on: *Popular book podcaster Adam Ashton shares his favorite strategies for utilizing habits to improve your life. *The many "habits" books currently flooding the market (and the new one Karin has suggested!) and what sets The Slight Edge apart *How to push past the inevitable "dip" when you're not getting the results you want, but perservere anyway. What is the difference between Book Insights episodes and Book Lounge episodes? Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? Welcome to the very first episode of the very first season of Between Two Unicorns, the Official Podcast of the Melbourne High School Old Boys Association. Right now, the current Covid-19 pandemic is having big impacts around the world. We're thinking of anyone who has been significantly impacted by this, either on a career level, a business level or a personal level.  My name is Adam Ashton. They met once a week to talk about books they were reading. They enjoyed this habit so much, that they decided to start reading the same book to discuss. What You Will Learn Podcast was born.Adam says that Tim Ferris, Akimbo by Seth Godin, Revisionist History by Malcom Gladwell, and The Way I Heard It by Mike Rowe, and a conference hosted by Tony Robbins have been his greatest influences for podcasting. We talk about why Adam decided to join the Podcast Fellowship in 2018, two years after his podcast was live. He wanted to get better.Adam and Adam have changed the way they select books. They initially chose books they both found interesting. Over time, they decided to alternate book selections, to broaden their interests and to read books outside of their comfort zones.Adam loves to read physical books so he can take notes to make them his own and to see physical progress as he reads.Surprisingly, Adam has not always been a voracious reader. He went from feeling like reading was a “chore” to being motivated to read more after he started listening to podcasts consistently. The book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” provided practical tips that Adam was able to implement in his relationships and encouraged him to read even more.Adam reads roughly 65 or more books per year for the podcast and for his own pleasure. He shares advice about how to make reading a manageable habit and not a chore; Scott Adams’ book  “How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win” taught him to look at systems - doing something small to feel successful everyday versus failing at a future goal.Because he is a lifelong learner, Adam challenges himself to read books which are outside of his comfort zone. Examples are  Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and Tao Te Ching.Adam describes why he loves Seth Godin’s book “The Dip” because it helped him to recognize when work is a struggle knowing not to quit too early. And more…Resources:To learn more about why reading is good for you, goHere, Here, and Here. The Mindful Minute:When you are immersed in a good book, time flies. It’s easy to forget to take a break. Sometimes our posture suffers. Let’s do an experiment. Sit in mountain pose. Take a deep breath in and out of your nose, letting your abdomen expand as you inhale and relax as you exhale. Now slouch on purpose. Notice how difficult it feels to take that same deep breath. Good posture and good breathing go hand in hand. You will be rewarded with more energy and less pain. Remember that this is all a practice.Listen to What You Will Learn Podcast.“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” -Arthur Ashe

On today's episode, my guest is fellow podcaster, Adam Ashton from Australia. He is a published author and host of the top nominated business podcast in Australia called What You Will Learn. His podcast is where he and his co-host, Adam Jones read an entire book, critically analyze it, and discuss their findings on air every single week. We had such interesting discussions about focusing in such a distracted world, bucking traditional paths, and my embarrassing lack of attention span to sit down and read a book. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode. Please comment by email, Instagram, or Facebook. What You Will Learn Podcast Twitter Facebook LinkedIn

Adam Ashton and Adam Jones met as two young blokes while attending Monash University, studying commerce and structural engineering respectively. Both were keen on making the most of their advantaged access to education as Australian citizens, ready to start their first job in the big city.  They looked to books to answer some big questions such as ‘how do I make the most of my life?’ and ‘how do I get people to like me in the office?’. They found more than they bargained for. Since June 2016, they’ve committed to reading and reviewing a new book each week, hosting the What You Will Learn podcast, that has seen them interview everyone from Scott Adams and Dan Pink to Robert Cialdini and Annie Duke. I enjoyed catching up with the guys on the 2nd of January, as we dusted off the cognitive cobwebs of the holidays and settled in for an hour long discussion on all things life-changing books, mindset and philosophy. With that, strap yourselves in for a conversation with the hosts of What You Will Learn, Adam Jones and Adam Ashton.  Topics Discussed: The backstory Why books? Learning from leaders Collecting dots Aiding retention and recall Positive serendipity Escapism through books The inverted U and reading toomuch Non-fiction v fiction Mindset and philosophy Why reading non-business books helps you become a better entrepreneur How to limit the downside Show Notes: Website: whatyouwilllearn.com Top 50 books of all time: https://whatyouwilllearn.com/top50/ --- Employee to Entrepreneur podcast on Apple Podcasts: bit.ly/employeetoentrepreneurpodcast  Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts @ goo.gl/sMnEa0   Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud  Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski  Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski   Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz   Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com   Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski   NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/

However, he soon realised that wasn't his personal definition of 'Success'.
