This Hip Deep edition, based on field work in Ghana, tells the story of how highlife turned into Afro-funk. Guitarist/composer/bandleader Ebo Taylor, is our principle guide, taking us to his hometown Saltpond to explore the roots of his complex sound, and recounting his highlife years, and his deep study of American jazz in London in the early 60s—all part of a remarkable mix. We also hear from Ghanaian Afro-funk pioneer Gyedu Blay Ambolley and other observers and veterans of this history. Among the figures that interweave this story are James Brown, his most successful African successor Geraldo Pino, and, of course, the creator of Nigerian Afrobeat (a variety of Afro-funk), Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Verdadeiro caldeirão cultural, a banda londrina Ibibio Sound Machine lançou recentemente seu quinto álbum, “Pull the rope”. Titres interprétés au grand studio- Back and Forth Live RFI - X-Ego, extrait de l'EP Back & Forth- Suffri Live RFI Line Up : Nneka, guitare-voix. Titres interprétés au grand studio- Like a river part I Live RFI- All This While feat. Reinel Bakole, extrait de l'album Like a River- Luna Live RFI.Line Up : Nora Beisel – Voix, Jan Janzen – Clavier, Andre van der Heide – Batterie, Reinel Ardiles Lindemann - Trompette, Benjamin Schneider – Guitare, Luna Weise – Basse, Niklas Mündemann - Sax Tenor, Leonard Gaab - Percussions.Son : Mathias Taylor et Benoît Letirant.► Album Like a river (Batov Rd 2023).Voir le clip Let Go.

For Episode 59 of STARK REALITY, Host James Dier aka $mall ¢hange welcomes veteran New York City DJ, radio producer and party promoter REGGIE JOHNSON. Reggie Johnson is an audio engineer, radio show host, party promoter and all around good ppls. He's been working as an engineer behind the boards at WBAI Pacifica for a few decades, and co-hosting Jeanie Hopper's Liquid Sound Lounge since '98. His own radio show From the Soundboard has been running since 2007, a 'program that usually focuses on concerts regardless of genre. This is where the artist and (or) group perfects the art of the "call and response" with its audience.' He does great deep dives on all kinds of artists and groups like Gal Costa, Link Wray, Yusef Lateef, Paul Robeson, Ramsey Lewis and many others. He's also helped promote parties since 1998 and has a longtime summer thing called Beats & BBQ. In his own words, he's 'just an average individual who believes in Socialist principles through music, arts and action. Everything is connected to everything.' Reggie is a humble and real dude which isn't always the case in these music and party scenes haha. We start out talking about classic parties and DJs like the Loft, David Mancuso, Paradise Garage, Nicky Siano, Turntables on the Hudson, and Liquid Sound Lounge, where Reggie got his start promoting and getting involved with WBAI and doing his own show. We also get into a lot about politics, Palestine, Ukraine, our disappointment with Bernie, critical thinking, and his own journey coming out of his shell as an introvert into promoting and throwing parties. We ended up rapping for over two hours so a longer convo. Enjoy! Reggie also gives us a tasty mix of vintage African funk to accompany. Jeff Mills, Neue Grafik, Prabhu Edouard and Knoel Scott talk about improvisational performance, rhythms as a form of communication and how technology is overtaking the artist. Jeff Mills started out on the Detroit techno scene in the 1980s before founding Underground Resistance with ‘Mad' Mike Banks in 1989. He left Detroit for New York in 1991 (via a residency at Berlin's mighty Tresor), to pursue a solo career and set up his own label, Axis. Since then, he's released a number of projects, including two volumes of Waveform Transmissions for Tresor; 2005's Blue Potential, a live album recorded with the 70-piece Montpelier Philharmonic Orchestra; and a new soundtrack for Fritz Lang's 1926 film Metropolis in 2000. In 2018, he set up the Afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest with the late Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, and has been making music and performing with the collective ever since. Neue Grafik is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist making a truly unique sound. Blending hip-hop, jazz and house, his music draws a map between his African heritage, time in Paris and love of London's grime scene. Forming the Neue Grafik Ensemble at an after-hours jam session at London's Total Refreshment Centre, he's established himself as formidable force in the world of jazz. Indo-French percussionist and composer Prabhu Edouard is recognised as one of the most versatile tabla players of his generation. A student of the legendary Pandit Shankar Ghosh, he's collaborated with artists from around the world including Jean-Pierre Drouet and Laxmi Shankar, and is part of the afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. Knoel Scott is an American saxophonist and composer best known for his time with jazz collective Sun Ra Arkestra. With a career spanning more than 40 years, he's worked alongside jazz greats including Lou Donaldson and Leon Thomas. Most recently, he's released his first major studio album, Celestial with long time collaborator Marshall Allen.

Today were delighted to serve you a German twist of the aperitif classic made by no one less than Elias Doré, the force behind Rebellion der Träumer. Originally from Berlin, Elias explored many facets of music by performing in various bands and genres, from Afro-Funk in Dakar, Klezmer and Gipsy in London to Reggae and Soul in Berlin, before fully immersing himself in electronic music. What has over time stayed with him is his love for melodic warmth and organic sounds. Not confined by tempo or genre boundaries, Elias always takes his time to create a context and narrative around his music. His latest releases include a remix of Touzani's 'Asi Es La Vida' on Trndmsk Records, 'Nubivagant' together with Paul Baule on the most recent Harabe Nightmares compilation as well as 'Batura' together with the boys from LADS on Rebellion der Träumer. On this episode our conversation with Steve Roitstein continues and goes a bit deeper. We bring a bit of historical perspective on Cuba and the black-listing of certain artists, specifically Willie Chirino who Steve collaborated with for years. Steve tells how a song became a sensation and source of hope in Cuba and how that song also led to the arrest of some who dared listen to it or sing it in their homes. We talk Miami and the things that connect us. No matter where we come from the history of the Cuban exile to Miami impacts us all, even a Jewish kid from Connecticut.
