In a filing on Tuesday, the administration acknowledged to the Supreme Court that the end of Title 42 will likely lead to "disruption and a temporary increase in unlawful border crossings" but asked the court to reject efforts by a group of conservative-leaning states to keep Title 42 in place. Migrants have been denied requests to seek asylum under U.S. and international law 2.5 million times since March 2020 on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19 under a public-health rule called Title 42. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/texas-gov-abbott-polar-vortex-threatens-migrants-bidens-border-disaster Texas Gov. Abbott warns polar vortex threatens migrants due to Biden’s border ‘disaster’ Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told President Joe Biden on Tuesday that his "disaster" immigration policy is putting lives at risk as a polar vortex expected this week will create bitter conditions for the thousands of illegal immigrants who continue to trek into the U.S. "With cold temperatures gripping Texas, your inaction to secure the southern border is putting the lives of migrants at risk, particularly in the City of El Paso," the Republican governor told Biden in a letter. "Your policies will leave many people in the bitter, dangerous cold as a polar vortex moves into Texas." "This terrible crisis for border communities in Texas is a catastrophe of your own making," Abbott wrote. The governor said Biden has failed in his constitutional duty to protect the border, which disproportionately impacts Texas. Abbott warned that the situation would only get worse if the Title 42 policy ends this week. That pandemic-era policy allows border agents to turn migrants away at the border, and ending it could lead to a surge of migrants at the southern border just as Texas faces some of its coldest temperatures. The Title 42 policy was set to expire Wednesday, but an appeal is being heard by the Supreme Court, which could decide as early as Tuesday evening. The Department of Homeland Security projects between 9,000 and 15,000 migrant encounters a day once the policy ends, which would add to the already highest annual total of encounters in U.S. history. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted an end to Title 42 would not mean the border is open. To suggest so, she said, is misinformation and "doing the work of these smugglers." Vice President Kamala Harris, who was tasked with identifying the root cause of mass migration to the southern border, has insisted in recent months that the border is secure. Abbott said he would continue to work with state-based officials to stem the tide of illegal immigration. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/white-house-confirms-zelenskyys-travel-us-ahead-massive-bill-funding-ukrainian-military White House confirms Zelenskyy's travel to US ahead of massive bill funding Ukrainian military The Biden administration confirmed early Wednesday morning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is on his way to the U.S. to discuss more assistance for the country during its ongoing conflict with Russia. In addition to meeting with President Biden, Zelenskyy is slated to address Congress Wednesday afternoon as lawmakers plan to shell out more money for Ukraine in its latest $1.7 trillion spending bill. The budget includes more than $45 billion in new military and humanitarian aid for his country. A press statement from the Biden admin Wednesday morning said Zelenskyy's address to a joint meeting of Congress will demonstrate the "strong, bipartisan support for Ukraine." In its official statement, the White House added President Biden has been rallying the world to support Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February. "Three hundred days ago, Russia launched a brutal assault against Ukraine. In response, President Biden rallied the world to support the people of Ukraine as they defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement read. "During the visit, President Biden will announce a significant new package of security assistance to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression." Extensive security measures were already underway in the nation's capital early Wednesday morning as the District prepared for the high-profile visit. As early as 4:30 a.m., Capitol Police cruisers could be seen lined up outside the Capitol building along with cement barricades blocking roads leading up to the building. On behalf of bipartisan Congressional leaders, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., sent a letter to Zelenskyy encouraging his visit to Washington, D.C., in a letter explaining the leaders' "immense respect and admiration" for the Ukrainian president. The pending aid would be the U.S.' largest amount of financial assistance to Ukraine since the war started and is intended to support the fight against Russia for months to come, according to the Associated Press. Congress is also expected to announce a major package of $1.8 billion in military aid on Wednesday, which will include a Patriot missile battery and precision guided bombs for Ukraine's fighter jets. U.S. officials said the package will include about $1 billion in weapons from Pentagon stocks and $800 million in funding through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, according to the AP. Though the massive spending bill is expected to receive support from many Republicans in the House and Senate, not all are on board with the additional funding. Some GOP lawmakers argued the new round of aid, which will bring the U.S. commitment to the war to over $110 billion, is improper without greater accountability. https://www.theepochtimes.com/us-senate-advances-1-66-trillion-government-funding-bill_4936469.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport US Senate Advances $1.66 Trillion Government-Funding Bill A $1.66 trillion government spending bill drew overwhelming bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday as lawmakers steered it toward passage before a weekend deadline to avoid a partial shutdown of federal agencies. Democratic and Republican negotiators agreed early Tuesday morning on the sweeping bill to fund the federal government through the end of its fiscal year on Sept. 30, raising funding from about $1.5 trillion in the last fiscal year. The Senate voted 70-25 to proceed to debate of the bill, with some Republican senators hoping to offer amendments. A handful of conservative Senate Republicans on Tuesday said they objected to the bill, but would not try to stop its passage. The bill includes other measures agreed on by negotiators from both parties, including a ban on the use of TikTok on government-owned devices and clarification of Congress’s role in certifying elections, an attempt to avoid a repeat of the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021. Senate and House leaders aim to pass the 4,155-page bill and send it to Democratic President Joe Biden for signing by the end of the week to ensure there are no interruptions to the government’s activities. The Tuesday vote was the first in a series of steps clearing the way for passage by Friday. Failure to pass legislation in time could bring a partial government shutdown beginning Saturday, just before Christmas, and possibly lead into a months-long standoff after Republicans take control of the House on Jan. 3, breaking the grip of Biden’s Democrats on both chambers of Congress. Budget experts found fault with the bill’s size. Included in the bill is $44.9 billion in emergency assistance to Ukraine and NATO allies and $40.6 billion to assist communities across the United States recovering from natural disasters and other matters. The Ukraine funds would be used for military training, equipment, logistics and intelligence support, as well as for replenishing U.S. equipment sent to Kyiv. It also includes funding to prepare for and respond to potential nuclear and radiological incidents in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ruled out the use of nuclear weapons in the conflict with Ukraine. Included in the Ukraine package is $13.4 billion in economic aid and $2.4 billion to help resettle Ukrainians in the United States. The military aid would be on top of the record $858 billion in U.S. defense spending for the year, which is up from last year’s $740 billion and also exceeds Biden’s request. U.S. lawmakers also included a proposal to bar federal employees from using the Chinese short-video app TikTok on government-owned devices. And they backed a proposal to lift a looming deadline imposing a new safety standard for modern cockpit alerts for two new versions of Boeing Co’s 737 MAX aircraft. https://nypost.com/2022/12/20/intruder-able-to-walk-into-uvalde-school-unchallenged-during-safety-audit/ ‘Intruder’ able to walk into Uvalde school unchallenged as new report slams medical response A Texas safety inspector posing as an intruder was recently able to stroll unchallenged into a Uvalde school — as a damning new investigation also blamed a “flawed medical response” for failing to save some of the 21 slaughtered in a mass shooting at Robb Elementary. The inspector was even able to enter through a back door that did not latch, eerily similar to how 18-year-old madman Salvador Ramos got into Robb Elementary before killing 19 fourth-graders and two teachers. The shocking breach was revealed at a Uvalde school board meeting Monday night, attended by at least a dozen family members of victims of the May shooting, the San Antonio Express-News said. Grieving loved ones were furious that “somebody just walked right in” seven months after one of the deadliest school shootings in history, KSAT also said of the meeting. As part of a state-mandated security audit, an inspector posing as an intruder attempted to gain access to three different schools in the grief-stricken area — strolling into one unchallenged, the meeting heard. Interim district Superintendent Gary Patterson admitted the error, saying the ongoing security lapse “is really 100 percent my responsibility,” telling the meeting: “We have got to secure those areas.” Berlinda Arreola, the grandmother of Uvalde victim Amerie Jo Garza, shared a picture of a school safety officer sitting and looking at his phone. https://trendingpoliticsnews.com/breaking-kari-lake-trial-reveals-42-5-of-randomly-examined-ballots-were-improper/ Kari Lake Trial Reveals 42.5% of Randomly Examined Ballots Were Improper According to Republican governor candidate Kari Lake’s legal team, 42.5% of examined ballots in Maricopa County for the 2022 governor’s race were illegitimate. Lake’s trial began on Wednesday were she is attempting to prove that wide scale fraud took place in Maricopa County on election day. The Lake War Room tweeted on Wednesday that 48 of the 113 ballots that were reviewed during examination were “19-inch ballots produced on 20-inch paper,” In a separate tweet, the Lake War Room wrote, “This Is how they disenfranchised Maricopa County voters on Election Day. The ballots were designed to be unable to be read through the machines. This wasn’t an error. It was malice. The process worked exactly as they intended it to.” One commenter on Twitter noted that there was no way the improper ballot size could have been because of “error.” “The expert testified there are only 2 ways for the 19 inch image to have bee projected onto the 20 in ballot which would cause tabulator errors. Both methods require an administrator to change. This could not have happened by chance or error. It was fraud.” https://twitter.com/i/status/1605620894994354176 - Play Video The race between Hobbs and Lake was decided by less than 18,000 votes. The counts put forward by Lake’s team contest her loss. Most counts were thrown out by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson, with 8 being tossed while two counts were allowed to proceed. Those counts deal with alleged intentional misconduct. Lake told Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest on Tuesday that this marked a “huge win” for her legal team, saying, “we got great news. We’re taking these b*stards to trial!” Adding that Hobbs would take the stand in the trial. It was later announced by Lake’s attorneys that they had withdrawn the subpoena for Hobbs to testify. “Maricopa County wants you to believe that they are so incompetent that all of the problems on Election Day can be written off as mistakes. The moves come after a TikTok video from July calling out the company for listing an "1830s slave cabin" went viral. The online short-term rental marketplace immediately removed the listing, then sought out others like it, enlisting the help of historical experts. Airbnb's "Work to fight Discrimination and Build Inclusion" now includes a section called "Prohibiting the Glorification and Marketing of Slavery," which states that in July 2022, the company "took a series of steps to address the listing of properties in the US that were known to include former slave houses," as they "have no place on Airbnb." The three main policies, which only apply to the United States, prohibit "prohibiting the listing of any home or other structure on a former plantation where enslaved people lived or worked if structures that existed during the time of slavery are still present on the property," bar "any structure specifically designed only to house enslaved people and that did house enslaved people," and prohibit "the promotion of slavery-related features as a selling point of a stay." Democratic and Republican negotiators agreed early Tuesday morning on the sweeping bill to fund the federal government through the end of its fiscal year on Sept. Latest Uvalde developments: Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas House and Senate to convene special legislative committees to address school and gun safety in the wake of last week's school shooting in Uvalde, but stopping short of calling for a full special session of the Legislature. Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez, whose jurisdiction includes Uvalde, has accused Governor Abbott of attempting to "bamboozle" grieving locals with empty promises of legislative action. Five people remained hospitalized with injuries suffered in the shooting as of Wednesday, including a 10 year old girl who remains in serious condition. The Girl Scouts have posthumously honored shooting victim Amerie Jo Garza with its Bronze Cross, which is granted to members who display life-threatening heroism. A Wednesday night mobile home fire in north Austin has claimed the life of a young child. The City of Austin has filed a challenge with the U.S. Census Bureau, contesting the count in the most recent census in 2020 - we are the largest U.S. city so far to do so. The Austin Police Department is pushing for the reinstatement of automated license plate readers, or ALPR's - a tool that was suspended alongside budgetary modifications following the George Floyd protests in 2020. Meanwhile, five APD officers facing indictments over their use of force during those protests are suing the city, saying the “less than lethal” rounds employed during the demonstrations were defective, and that they were insufficiently trained in their use. TXDOT has begun an extensive project to remove those pesky stoplights from part of Loop 360. The criminal justice org Mano Amiga reports it has reached the necessary number of petition signatures to force a local vote on marijuana decriminalization in San Marcos. Texas French Bread announces its return, at first with sales via local farmers markets. The future of the historic building on 29th Street, largely destroyed by fire, remains uncertain. Texas Longhorns Men's Golf has won a national championship - its first NCAA title since 2012. Weekend live music features a boatload of interesting road shows: Friday includes The Mavericks at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, The Warlocks at Hotel Vegas, The Suffers and Emily Wells at the Parish, Night Drive at the Far Out Lounge, and KUTX's Rock The Park show witih Joe McDermott and Sir Woman at Mueller Lake Park. Saturday shows: Whores at the Parish, Diane Coffee at the Mohawk, and Symphony X at Empire Control Room. On Sunday, Steely Dan plays ACL Live, Lawrence and Misterwives are at Stubb's, and Lunar Vacation is at the Parish. Meanwhile, Panic! At The Disco will kick off their upcoming world tour with a show at Austin's Moody Center on September 8. She had also won an honor-roll award earlier in the day, and her father reportedly spent hours waiting for information before confirming her death on Facebook.   Xavier Javier Lopez, 10, “was so full of life,” his mother, Felicha Martinez, told the Post. He liked sports, art class, and hamming it up for the camera. “He was funny, never serious and his smile,” Martinez said of her fourth-grade son. “That smile I will never forget. It would always cheer anyone up.”   Nevaeh Bravo, 10, was a fourth-grader. Per BuzzFeed, her cousin confirmed her death in a Facebook post, sharing a photo of Bravo smiling in a blue dress. “Our Nevaeh has been found,” her cousin wrote. “She is flying with the angels above.”   Alithia Ramirez, 10, loved to draw and wanted to be an artist, her father told KSAT 12 News.   Tess Marie Mata, 10, was confirmed dead by her sister, who posted on Facebook recalling Mata's “contagious laugh,” adding that the two played softball together. “I'm confused because how can something like this happen to my sweet, caring, and beautiful sister, and I'm angry because a coward took you from us,” Mata's sister wrote.   Alexandria Aniya Rubio, 10, was “beautiful and smart,” her mother, Kimberly Mata-Rubio, wrote in a Facebook tribute. Hours before the shooting, Mata-Rubio said she went to her daughter's honor-roll ceremony and watched her receive a good citizen award. “We told her we loved her and would pick her up after school,” Mata-Rubio wrote. “We had no idea this was goodbye.”   Layla Salazar, 10, used to sing along to “Sweet Child O' Mine” by Guns N' Roses on the way to school, her father told the Associated Press.   Makenna Lee Elrod, 10, was found dead in a classroom, her older sister confirmed on Twitter: “My sweet innocent baby sister…my heart will forever break for you my love.”   Jayce Luevanos, 10, was killed along with his cousin and classmate, Jailah Silguero. A cousin of theirs told ABC7 that “they always had a smile” on their faces.   Jailah Nicole Silguero, 11, was a “delighted, energetic, lovely little girl” who enjoyed making TikToks, according to a GoFundMe page her family friend made to cover her funeral expenses. The morning of the shooting, she reportedly asked her mother if she could stay home.   Eliana “Ellie” Garcia, 9, was the second eldest of five girls. She wanted to be a teacher, loved the film Encanto, and dreamed of wearing a purple dress to her quinceañera, her grandparents told the L.A. Times.    Eliahana Cruz Torres was also killed in the massacre, her family confirmed to KSAT.   Annabell Guadalupe Rodriguez, 10, was a third-grader, her family told KHOU-11. She was in the same classroom as her cousin, Jacklyn Cazares, when the shooter came in.   Jacklyn “Jackie” Cazares, 10, was in fourth grade. She was killed along with her cousin and classmate, Annabell Guadalupe Rodriguez, according to KSAT.   Maite Yuleana Rodriguez, 10, was a “sweet, smart little girl,” her family member wrote in a GoFundMe for her funeral expenses.   Rogelio Torres, 10, was among Tuesday's victims, his relatives told a Univision 14 KDTV reporter.   Miranda Matthis, 11, attended Robb Elementary with her brother, who survived the shooting. She was killed in her classroom, her parents told the Fort-Worth Star Telegram.   Eva Mireles, 44, was a fourth-grade teacher at Robb. Her aunt, Lydia Martinez Delgado, told the Post that Mireles was married to a police officer; their daughter just graduated from college. “She did all she could to live a long life,” Delgado said, “and here it was cut short.” She reportedly helped her students climb out the window before Ramos shot her. Irma Garcia, Mireles's co-teacher, was also killed in Tuesday's attack, her son, Christian Garcia, told NBC. She'd taught at Robb Elementary for 23 years and had four kids. “She sacrificed herself protecting the kids in her classroom,” said a Twitter user identifying himself as Garcia's nephew. “She died a HERO. She was loved by many and will truly be missed.”

On Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of mourners turned out for the funeral Mass for Amerie Jo Garza, a smiling fourth-grader who was killed a week ago when 18-year-old Salvador Ramos stormed into her Uvalde, Texas elementary school and opened fire on her classroom. Meantime, the local police in Uvalde is no longer cooperating with the state police in the investigation into their response to the shooting. Clayton Neville catches us all up on that. President Joe Biden praised New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday for her success in curbing domestic extremism and guns as he tries to persuade a reluctant Congress to tighten gun laws in the aftermath of horrific mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York. Linda Kenyon has that story. Focused on relentlessly rising prices, President Joe Biden plotted inflation-fighting strategy Tuesday with the chairman of the Federal Reserve, with the fate of the economy and his own political prospects increasingly dependent on the actions of the government's central bank. John Stolnis has the latest.  K-Pop sensation BTS visited the White House on Tuesday to talk with President Joe Biden about combating the rise in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans — bringing superstar sizzle to an otherwise sad and scary topic. It should have been the first day of a joyous week for Robb Elementary School students — the start of summer break. Instead on Monday, the first two of 19 children slain inside a classroom were being remembered at funeral visitations. The gathering for 10-year-old Amerie Jo Garza was at Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home in Uvalde, Texas, directly across from the grade school where the children, along with two teachers, were shot to death last week before the gunman himself was killed. Visitation for another 10-year-old, Maite Rodriguez, was at another funeral home. More visitations, funerals and burials will follow over the next two-and-a-half weeks, one after another, after another. The blame for an excruciating delay in killing the gunman — even as parents outside begged police to rush in and panicked children called 911 from inside — has been placed with the school district's homegrown police chief. It's left residents in small city of Uvalde struggling to reconcile what they know of the well-liked local lawman after the director of state police said that Pete Arredondo — as the commander at the scene — made the “wrong decision” last week not to breach a classroom at Robb Elementary School sooner. Russian forces in a “frenzied push” have seized half of the eastern Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk that is key to Moscow's efforts to quickly complete the capture of the industrial Donbas region. The city's mayor also told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Sievierodonetsk "is essentially being destroyed ruthlessly block by block." He says heavy street fighting continues and artillery bombardments threaten the lives of the estimated 13,000 civilians still sheltering in the ruined city that once was home to more than 100,000. President Joe Biden is set to meet with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell as soaring inflation takes a bite out of Americans' pocketbooks. Tuesday's meeting will be the first since Biden renominated Powell to lead the central bank and comes weeks after his confirmation for a second term by the Senate. Witnesses say a 9-year-old girl survived a cougar attack after wandering up a trail with two friends while camping in northwest Washington state. It happened Saturday morning near Fruitland, Washington. The girl fought back while her friends ran for their lives. Adults rushed to help and found the girl covered in blood. She was soon airlifted to a hospital, where she's recovering after surgery for multiple wounds to her head and upper body. Shanghai authorities say they will take some major steps Wednesday toward reopening China's largest city after a two-month COVID-19 lockdown that has throttled the national economy and largely bottled up millions of people in their homes. U.S. and Canadian regulators are investigating a hepatitis outbreak that may be linked to fresh organic strawberries. In a joint weekend statement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Public Health Agency of Canada say at least 27 illnesses in Minnesota, California and Canada occurred after people ate FreshKampo and H-E-B brand strawberries. The strawberries were purchased between March 5 and April 25 at various U.S. retailers, including Aldi, Kroger and Walmart and at Co-op stores in Canada. The strawberries are past their shelf life, but the FDA says consumers who froze them to eat later should throw them away. Police say someone busted into the altar at a New York City church, stole a $2 million gold relic and removed the head from a statue of an angel. The incident happened between Thursday and Saturday at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, known as the “Notre Dame” of Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood. The church was closed for construction at the time. The church's pastor said that camera recordings from the security system were also stolen. The Diocese of Brooklyn called it “a brazen crime of disrespect and hate.” Standing at attention under a cloudless sky in the late-May heat, President Joe Biden saluted as taps played, after laying the wreath of multi-colored flowers wrapped in red, white and blue ribbon in front of the tomb. Delivering remarks honoring fallen servicemembers, he said “Memorial Day is always a day where pain and pride are mixed together.” “Today we are free because they were brave,” the president said. Authorities say a fire was raging through a chemical company just southwest of downtown Omaha, Nebraska, forcing some nearby residents to evacuate and leaving thousands without power. Hurricane Agatha has made history as the strongest hurricane ever recorded to come ashore in May during the eastern Pacific hurricane season. It made landfall Monday afternoon on a sparsely populated stretch of small beach towns and fishing villages in southern Mexico's Oaxaca state. It was a strong Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, but it quickly lost power moving inland over the mountainous interior. Agatha was downgraded to a tropical depression Tuesday morning with sustained winds down to 35 mph. The Rangers reach the NHL's Eastern Conference finals, the Cardinals' first baseman stays hot, the Brewers take two from the Cubs and the Astros get a rare complete game. Indianapolis 500 champion Marcus Ericsson earned an unprecedented $3.1 million check for his victory. Ericsson is the second Swedish driver to win the race. Tom Cruise got his first $100 million opening weekend with “Top Gun: Maverick.” Paramount Pictures said Sunday that in its first three days in North American theaters, “Top Gun: Maverick” earned an estimated $124 million in ticket sales. When the jury in Johnny Depp's libel suit against ex-wife Amber Heard resumes deliberations after the Memorial Day weekend, its focus will be on issues much removed from the public debate that has engulfed the proceedings. For six weeks, testimony focused on details of alleged abuse that Heard suffered. Public debate also focused on whether Heard is telling the truth about what she experienced. But the jury has been tasked not with determining who was abused, but whether Heard defamed Depp when she wrote a newspaper piece about domestic violence. Depp says he was defamed, even though the article doesn't mention him. The jury verdict form spells out multiple hurdles Depp must clear to prevail. La Nina, the flip side of the better known El Nino weather condition, keeps popping up. La Nina is the natural but temporary cooling of parts of the Pacific that changes weather worldwide. The world is in year two, almost year three, of one that set a record in April for strength. For the U.S., La Nina is connected to more drought and fires out West, more Atlantic hurricanes and agricultural losses. They are happening more often. In the late 20th century, La Nina hit 28% of the time. Now it's nearly half the time. Hundreds of flights worldwide were canceled by mid-afternoon Sunday, adding to the mounting number of scrubbed flights during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Authorities say the weekend arrest of Paul Pelosi, the husband of U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, on suspicion of DUI came after a minor two-vehicle crash with no injuries in California's wine country. Records show Paul Pelosi was taken into custody late Saturday in Napa County and released early Sunday on $5,000 bail. A federal judge has ruled that former Proud Boys national chairman Henry “Enrique” Tarrio must remain jailed while awaiting trial on charges that he conspired with other members of the far-right extremist group to attack the U.S. Capitol. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly said in an order issued late Friday that Tarrio poses a danger to the public. The judge refused to release Tarrio on bond. An indictment in March charged Tarrio and others with plotting to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and interfere with the congressional certification of the Electoral College vote, which Democrat Joe Biden won over Republican President Donald Trump. In the most significant effort yet to punish Russia for its war in Ukraine, the European Union agreed to ban the overwhelming majority of Russian oil imports. The move came late Monday after tense negotiations that tested how far the bloc is willing to go to ostracize Moscow. From the moment Russia invaded on Feb. 24, the West has sought to make Russia pay economically for its war. But targeting the lucrative energy sector was seen as a last resort in Europe and has proved hardest since the bloc relies on the country for 25% of its oil and 40% of its natural gas. EU leaders agreed to cut around 90% of all Russian oil imports over the next six months. A senior Russian official said the move would hurt ordinary Russians. A man seemingly disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair threw a piece of cake at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum and shouted at people to “Think of the Earth.” Authorities have since transferred the 36-year-old to a police psychiatric unit and opened an investigation into the damage of cultural artifacts. Videos posted on social media seem to show a young man in a wig and lipstick who had arrived in a wheelchair. The man's identity wasn't known. He was also seen throwing roses in the museum gallery. The cake attack left a conspicuous white creamy smear on the glass but the famous work by Leonardo da Vinci wasn't damaged. Guards cleaned the smear off. —The Associated Press See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Uvalde, the SBC & Prayers of the People. Mike and Tim are joined by Executive Pastor and Elder of Journey Church Suzie Lind to discuss the events of the past week, including the sexual abuse report from the Southern Baptist Convention and the mass shooting in Uvalde Texas. It is a very raw conversation as everyone tries to sort out postures and directions forward. At the end of the conversation, Suzie, Mike and Tim engage in another 'Prayers of the People.' Lord, we pray for the people and children who have been subjugated and abused by institutions or those in power, but specifically within your church. Lord that you would bring healing and peace and freedom to those who have been hurt and who have been hiding or have been made to feel shameful by their abusers. Father, we pray that there would be Justice and a complete dismantling of the church that hides and protects those that prey on others, that marginalizes and exerts power over. Lord have mercy. Father God, we pray for the families of Uziyah Garcia, Jose Flores, Amerie Jo Garza, Xavier Javier Lopez, Nevaeh Bravo, Alithia Ramirez, Tess Marie Mata, Alexandria Aniya Rubio, Layla Salazar, Makenna Lee Elrod, Jayce Luevanos, Jailah Nicole Silguero, Eliana “Ellie” Garcia, Eliahana Cruz Torres, Annabell Guadalupe Rodriguez, Jacklyn “Jackie” Cazares, Maite Yuleana Rodriguez, Rogelio Torres, Miranda Matthis, Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia. Lord, that you would hear their cries; That you would bring mercy; That you would sit with them; That others would walk in grief with them. Today we offer a meditation on Grieving a Tragedy. Here in the United States, we have recently experienced the pain and trauma of gun violence in an elementary school in Texas, a grocery store in New York, and a church in California.   We can become desensitized and unable to process so much tragic news. Often words alone seem inadequate. We need silence in the presence of a Holy God.   So today we make space to grieve and mourn for those who are mourning. We make space to get in touch with our own feelings and emotions. And we make space to consider how God is calling us to action and to show compassion to those hurting.   We'll be meditating on a prayer from Psalm 57, TPT. We invite you to prepare a quiet place for this time of meditation. Perhaps light a candle. Don't rush or hurry this time. Linger as long as you need to process your feelings.    Have mercy on me, O God…for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings. The first half of this episode includes a weekly catch up session, new food recommendations, a possible visitation from someone who passed on, and Jamie mentions two podcast listeners, who turned friends, who turned business partners. The latter part of the episode involves Jamie's thoughts on gun control and the recent Ulvade, TX shooting. A trigger warning is given prior to this discussion. A personal message from Jamie: The outro song is "Hole in the World" by the Eagles. I chose this song for the back of my dad's prayer card. Not only did he love the band, but the lyrics described exactly how my family and I felt when we lost him. Given that I spoke about him in this episode and the Ulvade, TX tragedy, the song and sentiment also go out to the victims: Makenna Lee Elrod, 10, Layla Salazar, 10, Miranda Mathis, 11, Nevaeh Bravo, 10, Jose Manuel Flores Jr., 10, Xavier Lopez, 10, Tess Marie Mata, 10, Rojelio Torres, 10, Eliana "Ellie" Garcia, 9, Eiliahna Cruz Torres, 10, Annabell Guadalupe Rodriquez, 10, Jackie Cazares, 10, Uziyah Garcia, 10, Jayce Carmelo Luevanos, 10, Maite Yuleana Rodriguez, 10, Jailah Nicole Silguero, 10, Irma Garcia, 48, Eva Mireles, 44, Amerie Jo Garza, 10, Alexandria "Lexi' Aniyah Rubio, 10, and Alithia Ramirez, 10. Instead, in a perverse inversion of this day, we remember little children whose lives were cut down by weapons of war, not used to defend this country from foreign aggressors, but turned on its own citizens in a callous act of unforgivable aggression. To be honest, I wasn't sure if I should preach on this today. These shootings have become so frequent that if we clergy addressed them each time a new one occurred, we wouldn't preach on much else. But as the predictable tweets of thoughts and prayers were fired off by the same lawmakers and pastors who consistently block not only legislation, but even conversation about legislation, to address these atrocities, I felt literally nauseous.  We do not need platitudes from the pulpit. On this eve of Memorial Day, let's not mince words: these children are dead because they are casualties in a Culture War not of their choosing. Involuntary conscripts into a war to determine the future not only of this nation, but of our faith. Thoughts and prayers aren't the solution; they are the problem. These mass shootings can only continue because the Church in this country refuses to behave like the Church. When I was a loyal Southern Baptist footsoldier on the other side of the Culture Wars, it was common to talk about the four “G's”: guns, gays, God and gynecology. We've seen this month that strategy hasn't changed in fifty years.    This morning on this Feast of Ascension, I am left with the difficult conclusion that these precious children and their teachers are dead because the mostly white Christian evangelical lobby does not believe that Christ is risen, ascended and reigning at God's right hand in glory. They do not believe in God, at least not any God I recognize from the Gospels. The same lot that sang “Some may trust in horses, some may trust in chariots / But we will trust in the name of our God” in the 1980s and 90s, have proven time and again since then that the only thing they really trust in is their assault rifles. Their faith is in the NRA.  If you think this is hyperbole, consider The Washington Post's disturbing report that two days before the massacre in Uvalde, the gunmaker who manufactured the weapon used by the killer posted a photo online advertising its AR-15-style rifles showing a young boy - a child - holding a semiautomatic on his lap with this caption from Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” The sad part, of course, is that they're right.  The Church has a profound moral obligation to call out the NRA on this point. They justify their pistol-peddling politics with the circular logic that gun ownership should be easily accessible because we live in a dangerous world where an 18 year old might shoot up an elementary school. Carried to its logical conclusion, the NRA envisions a world where everyone is armed to the teeth; where parents, instead of reminding their children not to forget their lunch boxes, will remind them not to forget their guns. Please, someone explain to me what part of that vision conforms to anything we know about Jesus in the Gospels?  The Parkland Shooting survivors are right: some love their guns more than their children. In Christianity, we have a name for that: idolatry. How ironic that the most outspoken defender of the NRA in our lifetimes is also best known for his role as Moses in the 1956 epic The Ten Commandments. Would that he had understood those commandments better, perhaps he would have held a different view. Because, in fact, there was a very practical purpose for discouraging the worship of other gods in the first commandment of Exodus. We hear about it in the next book, Leviticus. As a gay man, I'm used to evangelicals breaking out Leviticus 18:22 against me. But if they backed up just one verse, they'd read in 18:21: “You shall not give any of your offspring to sacrifice them to Molech and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.” Chapter twenty gets even more pointed, claiming that to do so amounts to defiling the sanctuary of the Lord, and that God will destroy everyone who turns a blind eye to this abhorrent practice of child sacrifice.  Interestingly, Molech is only mentioned by name once in the New Testament - in the Book of Acts, nine chapters before the odd story we heard this morning. That's no accident. Acts of the Apostles is nearly obsessed with this question of idolatry. Acts 16 goes out of its way to tell us twice that the reason Paul and Silas are imprisoned is not because of some doctrinal dispute with the local authorities, but because they put an end to child exploitation. In doing so, they incurred a heavy financial loss for the men who were using the girl to turn a profit in exchange for her fortune telling powers. We need to return to this standard, when those who called themselves followers of Jesus put child-welfare above profits. The Church must demand that our governments and churches stop sacrificing our children to this Molech, this idol of easy gun ownership, even military-grade guns, turning a handsome profit for manufacturers every year, which in turn allows them to pour even more money in lobbies like the NRA.  One of the few children to survive the massacre did so only because she dipped her hand in the blood of a friend next to her, smeared it all over her body and played dead, hoping the teen-turned-angel-of-death might pass over her. No child should ever have to become living lintels and doorposts. How odd that a branch of Christianity fixated on the blood of Jesus, blood that can supposedly protect against COVID can't protect children from their own designs, from having to play in some warped retelling of the Exodus story. Jesus is called the Lamb of God by John's Gospel because of his sacrificial self-offering on a Cross. We've watched the memorial set up outside the school grow to include 19 small wooden crosses with hearts and Jesus fish at their center. When I saw that, it reminded me of a fact few Christians today realize. The cross did not become the official, or even a common symbol for Christianity until the late fifth or sixth centuries. Why?  As mothers plead for action, as they plead for the state not to forget their slaughtered babies, every Christian in this land should ask themselves how Mary would react if she walked into their sanctuaries. How would she react to the giant gilded cross suspended in our apse? It's easy for us to take the Cross for granted today as a decorative element in our piety, but for those who actually lived in its terrifying shadow, it was unthinkable to represent it visually. Instead, early Christians opted for images of Jesus as the Good Shepherd, or images of a fish because the Greek letters used to spell fish ICTHUS acted as a verbal gloss of “Jesus Christ Son of God, Savior.”  Our gospel accounts of the crucifixion are quite spare, but it was a gory affair. Suffocation over days as birds of prey slowly picked at victims flesh while they were still alive as people who probably knew them passed by. It was a vivid demonstration of Rome's power to utterly erase humanity and dignity. Because of this, it was one of Rome's most effective deterrents. It is sometimes assumed that when Constantine or Theodosius finally outlawed the practice, they did so for pious reasons: so that others could not die in the same manner as Christ. But, in fact, the earliest source tells us that it was more from a place of concern around humane treatment. Hanging replaced crucifixion because it was quick and far less painful. In other words, Christian rulers banned this weapon of terror because it was the right thing to do in light of their faith. Only when the actual thing disappeared did the symbol emerge.    We must pray for every parent of every child, and every family or friend of every victim of gun violence during this time when images of these weapons are circulating so widely in our media. But we must do more than lobby for better trigger warnings before movies and in social media feeds. We must demand that those who call themselves by Christ's name stand up against this insidious idol. Molech didn't attack and impose himself on the ancient Israelites, they adopted him as their false god by choice. There are glimmers of hope. Republican Representative Chris Jacobs came out in favor of stronger laws restricting the sale of semiautomatic weapons, limiting magazine capacity, and excluding the sale of body armor to the general public. Some conservative evangelical pastors are beginning to consider supporting similar measures.  The Church in this nation needs to wake up. There are many things that divide us, but this should not be one of them. The Mainline Church cannot be the only one mobilizing. Here at Grace, we have an altar to the victims of gun violence in the back of our sanctuary, and it has become one of the most visited sacred sites in this space. Everyone who calls themselves by Christ's name should be as united in our disgust of easy access to AR-15 style weapons as we are in our love for the victims, families and friends who have already suffered so much, too much. The Church must come together, laying down our arms in the Culture Wars, to advance this crucial conversation, and to effect real and lasting change. Thankfully, we have a great high priest, who, knowing our weakness, knowing that we are plagued by ego and division, knowing that it would take not a single lifetime, but a lifetime of lifetimes to join in a more perfect union, prayed that we all might be one.  Amen.

All gunned down by young men who should have had no access to an assault weapon in the first place. I have no meaningful response to such cruel slaughter. When I am in the most profound mourning, I turn to the composers whose music directly confronts that despair. Today that composer is Gustav Mahler. Since the victims were almost exclusively people of color, today for solace I turn to the extraordinary voices of women of color singing the music of Mahler. Roberta Alexander, Marian Anderson, Carol Brice, Oralia Dominguez, Jessye Norman, Florence Quivar, Shirley Verrett, Lucretia West provide balm for the depths of despair that we are all feeling right now. They are joined on the podium by some of the greatest conductors of the twentieth century: Leonard Bernstein, Christoph von Dohnányi, Bernard Haitink, Paul Kletzki, Hans Knappertsbusch, Erich Leinsdorf, Zubin Mehta, Pierre Monteux, Fritz Reiner, and Frieder Weissmann.
