The former Uvalde schools police chief and another former officer have been indicted over their role in the delayed police response to the 2022 massacre at Robb Elementary School. This tragic event left 19 children and two teachers dead, marking one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Pete Arredondo, the former Uvalde schools police chief, was booked and released from jail following his indictment on 10 counts of child endangerment, according to Uvalde County Sheriff Ruben Nolasco. "Arredondo was booked on 10 counts of child endangerment and released," Nolasco confirmed in a text message to The Associated Press. In addition to Arredondo, former school officer Adrian Gonzales was also indicted by a grand jury on multiple counts of felony child endangerment and abandonment. These indictments mark the first criminal charges brought against officers in connection with the Robb Elementary School shooting. The shooting occurred on May 24, 2022, when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire in a fourth-grade classroom. Despite the immediate threat, police waited more than 70 minutes before entering the classroom to confront and neutralize the gunman. During this period, the gunman continued to fire his AR-15-style rifle, resulting in the tragic loss of life. The slow and criticized police response has been the subject of numerous reports and investigations. A report by Texas lawmakers described the response as a failure to "prioritize saving innocent lives over their own safety." The Justice Department's report echoed this sentiment, detailing "cascading failures" by the police, who waited far too long to confront the gunman and failed to establish an effective command post. In response to the indictments, Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell confirmed the charges but did not immediately return messages seeking further comment. Efforts to reach the former attorney for Arredondo were unsuccessful, and contact information for Gonzales could not be found. The indictments come over two years after the shooting, which saw a massive response from 376 law enforcement officers, including state police, Uvalde police, school officers, and U.S. Border Patrol agents. Despite the large presence, officers failed to act swiftly, leading to severe criticism and the eventual firing of several officers involved in the response. Robb Elementary School, the site of the tragic shooting, has since been permanently closed. In October 2023, the city broke ground on a new school, symbolizing a step towards healing for the community. However, Uvalde remains divided between residents who seek accountability and those who wish to move past the tragedy. The indictments and the slow police response have left lingering questions and a community grappling with the aftermath of a harrowing event. As legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring that justice is served and that such failures are never repeated. This breaking news story will be updated as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further developments on this critical issue affecting the Uvalde community and beyond. Today's Headlines: Last night's debate between President Biden and Donald Trump was highly anticipated. Biden appeared raspy and aged, while Trump seemed slightly more composed than usual. However, there was no live fact-checking, leaving many of Trump's claims unchecked, such as blaming January 6th on Nancy Pelosi and denying derogatory remarks about fallen soldiers. An exchange about their golf swings added little substance to the debate. The Supreme Court's leaked EMTALA opinion was confirmed to be purposeful and final, deferring to a lower court decision that allows emergency abortions in Idaho for now. This means that, despite the ruling, doctors in Idaho will likely remain hesitant to provide care due to legal uncertainties. Oklahoma's state superintendent Ryan Walters mandated that all public schools in the state teach the Bible, incorporating it into the curriculum for grades 5 through 12. Walters claimed the Bible is essential for understanding American history and Western civilization, though his interpretation and implementation of this mandate remain unclear. Former Uvalde school district police chief Pete Arredondo was indicted on 10 counts of abandoning or endangering a child due to the mishandled response to the 2022 school shooting at Robb Elementary School. Despite posting bail, his indictment marks a rare application of the child endangerment statute, reflecting the unprecedented nature of law enforcement's inaction during the shooting. It's Tuesday, June 20th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Muslim militants kill 42 Ugandans, mostly kids Late Friday, Islamic militants from the Congo crossed the Ugandan border in the Kasese District, raided a school, killing 42 persons, mostly children, and burning the buildings, reports The Monitor. This was the worst terrorist attack in Uganda in 12 years. The Allied Democratic Forces Muslim terrorist group was formed in the 1990s out of Ugandan rebels.  Because they perceive schools to be “soft targets,” they have been attacking them since 1998. Many of these schools have Christian associations. We invite your prayers for the safety and protection of the children of Uganda.  400 Pakistanis drowned in Mediterranean Sea More than 400 Pakistani refugees drowned when a fishing trawler capsized in the Mediterranean Sea last week on its way to Italy, reports the Times of India. The boat had left Libya, bearing a load of 750 men, women, and children hoping to immigrate into Europe via Greece. One hundred were rescued. Last year, more than 800,000 Pakistanis left the country in search of better economic prospects abroad. Pakistan has countenanced high levels of persecution against Christians in recent years. Plus, the nation is facing very bad economic times. Inflation is running at 30% and the nation is drowning in debt — mostly acquired at high interest rates. Other nations facing extremely bad inflationary economies include Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Argentina, Sudan, Turkey, Iran, and Sri Lanka — countries mostly led by irresponsible and tyrannical socialists, communists, and Muslims.  South Africa's crackdown against homeschooling In other international news, South Africa's parliament is considering a bill that would further regulate homeschools in the country, reports BusinessTech.  The Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill will require parents to apply to the Education Department Head in order to register their student as a homeschooler, and subscribe to the “relevant national curriculum” prescribed by the Minister of Education. The registration may include a home visit from a school official. Also, under the proposed legislation, “The Head of Department must cancel a learner's registration to receive home education if, after investigation, the Head of Department is satisfied that home education is no longer in the best interests of the learner.” Violations of the law would subject a parent to a year in prison. Concerning tyrants, Isaiah 49:25-26 records this: “Can the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of a tyrant be rescued? For thus says the Lord: Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children. “I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then, all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.” Gambling is booming The U.S. gambling industry is growing.  Not counting casino hotels, the industry spiked another 17.5%, year-over-year, on first quarter results — now constituting a $36 billion industry for the country. That's up from $24 billion of annual activity in 2012, representing a 50% increase. Healthcare industry and info tech flying high Meanwhile, the U.S. healthcare industry has topped $3.4 trillion, a 26% increase since 2019. And a 67% increase since 2012. But the largest growth in American industry has occurred in the Information technology sector, registering a 77% increase since 2012, and a 32% just since 2019.  The trial of Hillsong's Brian Houston The public trial of Hillsong's founder, Brian Houston, is wrapping up in Sydney, Australia. The matter concerns the failure on the part of Hillsong leadership to report sex crimes against children committed by Houston's father — Frank Houston, a well-known Assembly of God pastor, reports The Christian Post. The elder Houston grew a large church in the 1980s, which eventually merged with Brian Houston's Hillsong Church in 1999. Hillsong leadership has been mired in scandals relating to adultery, sexual abuse, and drunkenness for years. Jesus said: “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.” (Luke 17:1) Hillsong's musical influence In related news, WorshipLeaderResearch.com released a study earlier this month analyzing the last 10 years of the most popular worship songs used in American churches. Twenty-four out of 25 of the songs are sourced in Hillsong, Bethel, Passion, Elevation, and North Point — five megachurch movements of the early 21st century. The Hillsong Worship group is credited as the top contributor with 6 out of 25 songs.  Lessons from Uvalde, Texas Marking the May 24, 2023 one-year anniversary of the Uvalde, Texas school shooting when 18-year-old Salvador Ramos killed 19 kids and 2 teachers and injured 17 others, I interviewed Michael Letts, a 30-year veteran of law enforcement for today's edition of Generations Radio. Tragically, the Uvalde School Police Chief, Pete Arredondo, hesitated in authorizing his officers to shoot Ramos. That's why it took an agonizingly long 77 minutes for the police to finally do their job. LETTS:  “Instead of engaging as a training was, [Arredondo] hesitates. He says, ‘I need more information. Let me find out what else is going on. I think that shooter has locked himself into a room, and we're going to wait it out.' “That was not the case. He put himself in a room alright, a room full of kids and was shooting up and killing kids as this was all progressing. What is so frustrating is the officers are in the hallway. They can hear the shots ringing out. They can hear the cries of children. They know that, ‘No, he is not in a room by himself.' “But there's a structural command of authority. So, they are frustrated. They're waiting to do what they've been trained to do, and that's to go in and confront the assailant. They're not given the authority to do so.” To listen to my entire 28-minute interview with Michael Letts about “Lessons from Uvalde,” go to www.Generations.org/radio. Frozen strawberries contaminated with Hepatitis A And finally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall on frozen strawberries sold at Walmart, HEB stores, and Costco, reports CBS News. He did not address lowering tuition costs, or that it may be unfair to borrowers who paid their loans despite difficulties, and without forgiveness. https://rumble.com/v1h7d6v-biden-heres-what-my-administration-is-gonna-do-to-provide-more-breathing-ro.html - Play Video Biden said that around 90 percent of those that would qualify for the relief make under $75,000 per year. In addition to the initial $10,000, those that received Pell Grants would qualify to receive an additional $10,000 in cancellation debt, coming to a total of $20,000. He stressed that 95 percent of borrowers would benefit from these actions. And of the 43 million borrowers that would have debt cancelled, roughly 60 percent of those, 27 million people, are Pell Grant borrowers. Nearly 45 percent of people who took out federal student loans would be have the entirety of their federal student loans cancelled under this action. In his third point, Biden said that his administration would be fixing the student loan program system itself. Students would have their payments capped at 5 percent of their discretionary income for loan payments, down from 10 percent. He also said that after 20 years, a borrower’s payment obligation would be reached, and no further payment would be required. Biden also said that his administration would be fixing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, which encourages graduates to pursue public service in exchange for forgiven loans. These fields include teaching, law enforcement, charity work, and military service, and those that serve in these positions and make loan payments for 10 years would have the remainder of their balance forgiven. After concluding his speech, Biden only addressed one question from the press regarding whether he had advanced notice of the FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago. Questions regarding the fairness of the student loan debt cancellation for those who had repaid their loans already were not answered. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-lacks-authority-student-debt-handout-pelosi-warned-last-year Biden lacks authority for student debt handout, Pelosi warned last year last year, Pelosi poured cold water on the idea, saying that such a move was something reserved for an act of Congress, not the executive. https://twitter.com/i/status/1420417022786261002 - Play Video Her statements were in sharp contrast to those of Sen. Schumer, who claimed that the president could do such a sweeping move "with the flick of a pen." Alright, enough about this debt forgiveness, let’s head back to California! https://justthenews.com/nation/states/report-california-likely-ban-sales-gas-powered-cars-2035?utm_source=sf&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=twjs California likely to ban sales of gas-powered cars by 2035 California this week is likely to enact a major rule to ban the sale of gas-powered cars in the state by 2035, multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday. The regulation is expected to be handed down by the state's California Air Resources Board, which is set to vote on the matter on Thursday. Currently, 12 percent of cars sold in California are required to be fossil fuel-free. Estimates put the number of fully electric cars on the road in the U.S. at just under one percent. California is estimated to have nearly 30,000,000 drivers registered within the state. Supporters of the law praised its ambitious goals. “The climate crisis is solvable if we focus on the big, bold steps necessary to stem the tide of carbon pollution,” Gov. Gavin Newsom told media in a statement. Margo Oge, an electric vehicles expert who has worked with the EPA under multiple presidential administrations, told the New York Times that the development was "huge." https://americanmilitarynews.com/2022/08/uvalde-families-to-file-27-billion-civil-lawsuit-against-police-gunmaker-over-school-shooting/ Uvalde families to file $27 billion civil lawsuit against police, gunmaker over school shooting The families of the victims and survivors of the Robb Elementary School massacre in Uvalde, Texas, are preparing to file a massive lawsuit against the local and state police, the shop that sold gunman Salvador Ramos his weapon and the manufacturer who made the gun. Attorney Charles Bonner announced Sunday that he is filing a $27 billion civil rights lawsuit against the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Department, school police chief Pete Arredondo, sheriff’s offices, the Texas Rangers, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Border Patrol, the Uvalde Independent School District school board, the Uvalde City Council and the City of Uvalde. Also listed in the lawsuit are gun manufacturer Daniel Defense and Oasis Outback, where Ramos bought the gun. “People have a right to life under the 14th Amendment, and what we’ve seen here is that the law enforcement agencies have shown a deliberate conscious disregard of the life,” Bonner told KSAT. “Everyone in this world are hurting and bleeding about what is happening here in Uvalde. And it’s up to us to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” Nineteen students and two teachers were gunned down inside their classrooms on May 24 as hundreds of police officers poured into the school and stood by as Ramos laid waste to the school. Arredondo, the on-scene commander, was placed on unpaid leave in late June and the school superintendent has recommended he be fired. The 376 responding officers “failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety,” according to the report. Bonner said he is preparing the lawsuit to file in September. Specifically, the IRA establishes the “Methane Emission Reduction Program” under a new section in the Clean Air Act, allowing the EPA to impose a fee on certain “climate pollutions.” Importantly, this is the first time the federal government has ever imposed a fee on any GHG emission and is part of Congress’ effort to bolster the EPA’s power to address the “climate crisis.” In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency that the EPA didn’t have the authority under the Clean Air Act or the Clean Power Plan to essentially force power plants to transition more towards wind and solar. Moreover, SCOTUS determined that the interpretive question raised under the Clean Power Plan fell under the “major questions doctrine,” which states that Congress must make a “clear statement” if it wants to delegate authority “of this breadth to regulate a fundamental sector of the economy.” Notably, the ruling expressly limited the EPA’s ability to regulate carbon emissions from power plants, which President Joe Biden called “devastating.” Biden further added that he planned to “find ways that we can, under federal law, continue protecting Americans from harmful pollution, including pollution that causes climate change.” The IRA includes several tax credits, incentives, and grants, totaling $369 billion for “Energy Security and Climate Change investments.” And the above investments include over $1.5 billion to the EPA for “grants, rebates, contracts, loans” and “other activities” to reduce GHG emissions in the natural gas and oil sector. Methane is the primary component of natural gas, and the EPA reports that methane emissions accounted for 11 percent of total U.S. GHG emissions in 2020. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) accounted for 79 percent. Further, Biden made it clear that by 2030, he wants GHG emissions reduced by 40 percent compared to 2005 levels. And reduction levels of that amount require significant transformation. The IRA’s passage and its implementation of a methane charge put Biden’s goals within reach. Indeed, the Department of Energy reports that thanks to the IRA, the United States will not only meet the 40 percent reduction goal but exceed it as it now projects GHG emissions at 50-52 percent below 2005 levels. Interestingly, according to the EPA, the primary source for methane emissions isn’t natural gas or oil—it’s livestock. Before we go today, we gotta wrap up with sports right? https://nypost.com/2022/08/23/kevin-durant-moving-forward-with-nets-after-trade-demand-saga/ Kevin Durant ‘moving forward’ with Nets after trade demand saga Kevin Durant is staying put in Brooklyn. And the Nets aren’t just running it back for a year — they’re together for the long term. Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement Tuesday that after a face-to-face to clear the air, the Nets and Durant — who’d first requested a trade, then the firing of Marks and coach Steve Nash in order to stay — are “moving forward” together to chase the franchise’s first-ever NBA championship. A highly placed Nets source amplified that this was not simply a case of cajoling Durant to stay for the upcoming season, to take a final all-or-nothing shot at a title with Kyrie Irving before trading him next summer. While Durant could always make another heel turn, all parties left that meeting at least expecting this to be a long-term marriage, albeit one with plenty to work through. The Post had reported weeks ago that Durant was trending toward being present at training camp, which starts Sept. 27. But after this meeting the Nets expect Durant to fulfil the four-year, $198 million extension he signed last August that kicks in this upcoming season. It remains to be seen how much reconciliation is needed between Durant and the men he tried to get fired. It should also be noted that he went from inking a deal without a no-trade clause or trade kicker a year ago to requesting a trade in June, from wanting his GM and coach fired two weeks ago to supposedly buying in now. The drama brings to mind the summer 2007 episode when Kobe Bryant went on LA radio and requested a trade from the Lakers. But after testing the market and finding nothing to approximate the all-time great, the Lakers held onto him and reached the Finals that following season, with Bryant winning MVP This has been your CrossPolitic Daily NewsBrief. Uvalde updates: The Robb Elementary School building, where last month's mass shooting occurred, is set to be demolished. School district police chief Pete Arredondo has been placed on leave from those duties by Uvalde CISD administrators. Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez has filed suit against the Texas Department of Public Safety, demanding that they hand over all records and information related to the shooting. And Texas Senate hearings on the crime at the Capitol that have been ongoing all this week have included very little discussion of guns. Speaking of guns - earlier this week, a man tried to enter the 7-11 store at Ben White and South 1st with an AR-15 rifle after the clerk declined to give him free gas. He's charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery. And, another man was arrested Sunday after firing rounds at people near Zilker Park and threatening a mass shooting at a weekly Sunday drum circle there. Median home prices inside the Austin city limits have hit another all-time new high: $667,000 on average as of May, a 21% year-to-year jump - we're now considered the second-most overpriced market in the U.S. Historic Ski Shores Cafe on Lake Austin has re-opened after a remodel by new owners McGuire Moorman Lambert, while the equally historic original Threadgill's site on North Lamar will see a 100-unit apartment building go up behind the restaurant structure, which will be preserved as part of the project after a request to tear it down was denied by the city. Live music this weekend: Friday shows including 5 Seconds of Summer and Pale Waves at Waterloo Park, CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band at Antone's, and the fabulous Copa Kings at the Highball. Saturday catch Country Willie Edwards at Sagebrush, Shinyribs at the Haute Spot, the all-day Texas metal showcase Lonestar Unleashed with Austin's High Desert Queen, Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol and Skatenigs, Dallas' Wo-Fat and Temptress, Houston's Warlung and tons more, bring your earplugs. Uvalde developments continue: The Texas Tribune has published a minute-by-minute account of the mass shooting event, based upon all currently-available information - including new information that shows police on the site with sufficient firepower and shielding to have engaged the shooter much earlier than they did. Parents of the Uvalde school district are calling for the firing of district school police chief Pete Arredondo, and Democrats in the Texas Senate have renewed calls to Governor Greg Abbott to convene a special session of the Texas Legislature to consider gun safety. Record heat continues On Monday, as the "heat dome" affecting the area shifts eastward. One day prior to today's official first day of summer - the Texas power grid set a new all-time record for power demand, for the second time in just over a week. Monday's peak of 76,600 megawatts tops the prior, eight-day-old record by over 1,500 megawatts. Meanwhile, development in new energy sources is being outpaced by growth in demand. Austin-area U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett has unveiled a new federal research project dedicated to the impact of climate change on water supplies. Doggett predicts that rising heat will see "Texas become much more like the Sonoran Desert". Meanwhile, concern mounts about toxic algae contamination and zebra mussels in Austin's waterways. The Austin housing market shows signs of cooling, as inventory grows and the rate of sales slows - prices, however, have not yet begun to drop. With all of that in mind, Austonia breaks down the question: Is Austin still cool? In the wake of an ignominious loss to Texas A&M, marking Texas Baseball's departure from this year's College World Series, head coach David Pierce has dismissed longtime assistant and pitching coach Sean Allen. The athletic director at OU says that following the Sooners' departure from the Big 12 alongside UT, that the schools will continue to play football against each other each season, outside of the partial-conference rotation that will mark that large conference's members schedules.

For the first time since new three-level, CDC-managed measurement metrics were adopted for Travis County, our COVID risk assessment has been raised from Low to Medium level. Austin U.S. Representative Chip Roy presented what the Statesman calls a "dystopian" critique of attempts to apply restrictions to gun access during another hearing Thursday that featured survivors of the Uvalde shooting - one Democratic lawmaker pointed out that Roy's pretext for protecting gun rights involves owners turning them on American troops. Pete Arredondo, the Uvalde school police department head who has been at the center of discussions on the delay in police action against the mass shooter, has given his first full-ranging interview - the delay, he says, was in finding a key that would unlock the classroom's reinforced door. Over 2,000 Austin ISD staffers are leaving the district as the school year ends. Harmful algae has been detected in Lady Bird Lake, and the city's Watershed Protection department is expanding its Phoslock treatment plan in an attempt to curb its growth. Austin has been named the U.S. city with the fastest-rising residential rental rates - in fact, housing costs in Austin have risen so much that our city no longer appears to be a savings opportunity for people living in high-cost areas. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, thanks to Big Media, America is engaged in a conversation on mass shootings, and mental illness with no real facts, or hard data. A word of thanks also goes to Mitch McConnell and the RINO Republicans for discussing pointless gun control measures in Congress, even though there isn't a single bill they could pass that would stop crazy people from hurting innocent people. We must thank President Biden for focusing his attention on 9mm pistols and revealing how senseless their gun-grabbing desires are, right? Then, the increased cost of every gallon of gas that you pay for is squarely Biden's fault. By limiting the production of energy, you increase the demand and the price. This was clear 14 months ago when this program noted that increased federal spending and decreased energy supply would drag us over the cliff to inflation and into a recession. All because of leftist climate ideology, not economics. Later, The Democrat Party and American Marxists never leave what's good alone; they create anarchy in energy production, our food supply, and our policies. Secretary Janet Yellen admits that she was wrong about inflation. Secretary Vilsack wants to transform agriculture. Democrats have destroyed our cultural history and economy. Afterward, according to FEC filings the Uvalde Police Chief, Pete Arredondo, donated to Democrat Beto O'Rourke's campaign in 2017. O'Rourke is famous for saying he was coming for your AR-15 if elected President. MSNBC host Joy Reid entertained commentary on her program that suggested that the police response was slowed due to the community being poor or Hispanic. Incidentally, this makes no sense as it is believed that Chief Arredondo, a Uvalde native, is also of Hispanic heritage. Finally, Andrew Pollack, whose daughter was murdered at Stoneman Douglas High School, calls in to tell parents to demand more security in schools.  Learn more about your ad choices. More consistent is the report that school police chief Pete Arredondo has failed to respond to requests for a follow-up interview - while also being sworn in to the Uvalde City Council in a private ceremony yesterday. The normally police-friendly population of Uvalde is now grappling with what appears to be a monumental police failure. Another story shift as investigators now say the door used by the shooter to access Robb Elementary School was not left propped open by a teacher, as was initially reported. Among several GoFundMe efforts, one seeks to support 11-year-old Miah Cerrillo, who is now dealing with trauma after surviving the ordeal, and another has been started by former Texas Longhorns and current Minnesota Vikings player Kris Boyd. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a curious mix of conservative and progressive justices, has blocked a Texas law that intended to punish social media platforms for removing political speech from taking effect. A group of educators representing The Texas chapter of the American Federation of Teachers marched to deliver a letter demanding firearms reform to Senator Ted Cruz's office in Austin yesterday. Stage 1 water use restrictions begin on Monday - it's important to learn when you're allowed to water your lawn. Austin Bergstrom International Airport has seen a string of catalytic converter thefts from cars parked in its economy lots. The historic Buford Tower near Lady Bird Lake is set to undergo repairs from fire damage that occurred last year, and renovations that will include new lighting and carillon chimes. June is Pride Month, and there are many opportunities to celebrate in Austin and across Texas. And, record-breaking heat is inbound starting Sunday - we could see four daily high temperature records drop in a row early next week.

It should have been the first day of a joyous week for Robb Elementary School students — the start of summer break. Instead on Monday, the first two of 19 children slain inside a classroom were being remembered at funeral visitations. The gathering for 10-year-old Amerie Jo Garza was at Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home in Uvalde, Texas, directly across from the grade school where the children, along with two teachers, were shot to death last week before the gunman himself was killed. Visitation for another 10-year-old, Maite Rodriguez, was at another funeral home. More visitations, funerals and burials will follow over the next two-and-a-half weeks, one after another, after another. The blame for an excruciating delay in killing the gunman — even as parents outside begged police to rush in and panicked children called 911 from inside — has been placed with the school district's homegrown police chief. It's left residents in small city of Uvalde struggling to reconcile what they know of the well-liked local lawman after the director of state police said that Pete Arredondo — as the commander at the scene — made the “wrong decision” last week not to breach a classroom at Robb Elementary School sooner. Russian forces in a “frenzied push” have seized half of the eastern Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk that is key to Moscow's efforts to quickly complete the capture of the industrial Donbas region. The city's mayor also told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Sievierodonetsk "is essentially being destroyed ruthlessly block by block." He says heavy street fighting continues and artillery bombardments threaten the lives of the estimated 13,000 civilians still sheltering in the ruined city that once was home to more than 100,000. President Joe Biden is set to meet with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell as soaring inflation takes a bite out of Americans' pocketbooks. Tuesday's meeting will be the first since Biden renominated Powell to lead the central bank and comes weeks after his confirmation for a second term by the Senate. Witnesses say a 9-year-old girl survived a cougar attack after wandering up a trail with two friends while camping in northwest Washington state. It happened Saturday morning near Fruitland, Washington. The girl fought back while her friends ran for their lives. Adults rushed to help and found the girl covered in blood. She was soon airlifted to a hospital, where she's recovering after surgery for multiple wounds to her head and upper body. Shanghai authorities say they will take some major steps Wednesday toward reopening China's largest city after a two-month COVID-19 lockdown that has throttled the national economy and largely bottled up millions of people in their homes. U.S. and Canadian regulators are investigating a hepatitis outbreak that may be linked to fresh organic strawberries. In a joint weekend statement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Public Health Agency of Canada say at least 27 illnesses in Minnesota, California and Canada occurred after people ate FreshKampo and H-E-B brand strawberries. The strawberries were purchased between March 5 and April 25 at various U.S. retailers, including Aldi, Kroger and Walmart and at Co-op stores in Canada. The strawberries are past their shelf life, but the FDA says consumers who froze them to eat later should throw them away. Police say someone busted into the altar at a New York City church, stole a $2 million gold relic and removed the head from a statue of an angel. The incident happened between Thursday and Saturday at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, known as the “Notre Dame” of Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood. The church was closed for construction at the time. The church's pastor said that camera recordings from the security system were also stolen. The Diocese of Brooklyn called it “a brazen crime of disrespect and hate.” Standing at attention under a cloudless sky in the late-May heat, President Joe Biden saluted as taps played, after laying the wreath of multi-colored flowers wrapped in red, white and blue ribbon in front of the tomb. Delivering remarks honoring fallen servicemembers, he said “Memorial Day is always a day where pain and pride are mixed together.” “Today we are free because they were brave,” the president said. Authorities say a fire was raging through a chemical company just southwest of downtown Omaha, Nebraska, forcing some nearby residents to evacuate and leaving thousands without power. Hurricane Agatha has made history as the strongest hurricane ever recorded to come ashore in May during the eastern Pacific hurricane season. It made landfall Monday afternoon on a sparsely populated stretch of small beach towns and fishing villages in southern Mexico's Oaxaca state. It was a strong Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, but it quickly lost power moving inland over the mountainous interior. Agatha was downgraded to a tropical depression Tuesday morning with sustained winds down to 35 mph. The Rangers reach the NHL's Eastern Conference finals, the Cardinals' first baseman stays hot, the Brewers take two from the Cubs and the Astros get a rare complete game. Indianapolis 500 champion Marcus Ericsson earned an unprecedented $3.1 million check for his victory. Ericsson is the second Swedish driver to win the race. Tom Cruise got his first $100 million opening weekend with “Top Gun: Maverick.” Paramount Pictures said Sunday that in its first three days in North American theaters, “Top Gun: Maverick” earned an estimated $124 million in ticket sales. When the jury in Johnny Depp's libel suit against ex-wife Amber Heard resumes deliberations after the Memorial Day weekend, its focus will be on issues much removed from the public debate that has engulfed the proceedings. For six weeks, testimony focused on details of alleged abuse that Heard suffered. Public debate also focused on whether Heard is telling the truth about what she experienced. But the jury has been tasked not with determining who was abused, but whether Heard defamed Depp when she wrote a newspaper piece about domestic violence. Depp says he was defamed, even though the article doesn't mention him. The jury verdict form spells out multiple hurdles Depp must clear to prevail. La Nina, the flip side of the better known El Nino weather condition, keeps popping up. La Nina is the natural but temporary cooling of parts of the Pacific that changes weather worldwide. The world is in year two, almost year three, of one that set a record in April for strength. For the U.S., La Nina is connected to more drought and fires out West, more Atlantic hurricanes and agricultural losses. They are happening more often. In the late 20th century, La Nina hit 28% of the time. Now it's nearly half the time. Hundreds of flights worldwide were canceled by mid-afternoon Sunday, adding to the mounting number of scrubbed flights during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Authorities say the weekend arrest of Paul Pelosi, the husband of U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, on suspicion of DUI came after a minor two-vehicle crash with no injuries in California's wine country. Records show Paul Pelosi was taken into custody late Saturday in Napa County and released early Sunday on $5,000 bail. A federal judge has ruled that former Proud Boys national chairman Henry “Enrique” Tarrio must remain jailed while awaiting trial on charges that he conspired with other members of the far-right extremist group to attack the U.S. Capitol. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly said in an order issued late Friday that Tarrio poses a danger to the public. The judge refused to release Tarrio on bond. An indictment in March charged Tarrio and others with plotting to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and interfere with the congressional certification of the Electoral College vote, which Democrat Joe Biden won over Republican President Donald Trump. In the most significant effort yet to punish Russia for its war in Ukraine, the European Union agreed to ban the overwhelming majority of Russian oil imports. The move came late Monday after tense negotiations that tested how far the bloc is willing to go to ostracize Moscow. From the moment Russia invaded on Feb. 24, the West has sought to make Russia pay economically for its war. But targeting the lucrative energy sector was seen as a last resort in Europe and has proved hardest since the bloc relies on the country for 25% of its oil and 40% of its natural gas. EU leaders agreed to cut around 90% of all Russian oil imports over the next six months. A senior Russian official said the move would hurt ordinary Russians. A man seemingly disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair threw a piece of cake at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum and shouted at people to “Think of the Earth.” Authorities have since transferred the 36-year-old to a police psychiatric unit and opened an investigation into the damage of cultural artifacts. Videos posted on social media seem to show a young man in a wig and lipstick who had arrived in a wheelchair. The man's identity wasn't known. He was also seen throwing roses in the museum gallery. The cake attack left a conspicuous white creamy smear on the glass but the famous work by Leonardo da Vinci wasn't damaged. The blame for an excruciating delay in killing the gunman at an Uvalde, Texas, elementary school — even as parents outside begged police to rush in and panicked children called 911 from inside — has been placed with the school district's homegrown police chief. It's left residents in small city of Uvalde struggling to reconcile what they know of the well-liked local lawman after the director of state police said that Pete Arredondo — as the commander at the scene — made the “wrong decision” last week not to breach a classroom at Robb Elementary School sooner. Arredondo has not spoken with investigators.  President Joe Biden is set to meet with infant formula manufacturers as his administration works to ease nationwide shortages. The administration's strategy calls for importing foreign supplies and using the Defense Production Act to speed domestic production.  Biden says in a guest essay in The New York Times that he's decided to provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield.  The sting of the global supply chain problem has partially come from China's coronavirus lockdown. Some good news: Traffic, pedestrians and joggers have reappeared on the streets of Shanghai as China's largest city begins returning to normalcy amid the easing of a strict two-month COVID-19 lockdown that has drawn protests over its heavy-handed implementation.  The nation's leading cybersecurity agency says electronic voting machines from a leading vendor used in at least 16 states have software vulnerabilities. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency says the vulnerabilities can leave the machines susceptible to hacking if the flaws go unaddressed. In sports, the Avalanche outscore the Oilers to start the NHL Western Conference Final, Rafael Nadal beats Novak Djokovic in an historic French Open quarterfinal, the Yankees score early and often and the Cubs win with Wisdom.  President Joe Biden has met with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, talking inflation fighting. Biden hoped the meeting on Tuesday would demonstrate his concern to voters, though he insisted anew the White House will not interfere with the independent central bank's work. The president is largely entrusting the fate of the economy and his own political fortunes to the Fed. The central bank's highly sensitive task: raising benchmark interest rates in hopes of slowing inflation while also avoiding an economic downturn. Biden is praising New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for her success in curbing extremism and guns following a 2019 mass shooting there. Biden said he wants to know more about her country's efforts as he tries to persuade Congress to tighten gun laws after recent shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York. A lawyer for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has been acquitted of lying to the FBI when he pushed information meant to cast suspicions on Donald Trump and Russia in the run-up to the 2016 election. The jury in the case of Michael Sussmann deliberated on Friday afternoon and Tuesday morning before reaching its verdict. Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro has revealed in a court filing that he has been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury this week as part of the Justice Department's probe into the deadly U.S. Capitol insurrection. Navarro said Tuesday he was served by the FBI at his Washington, D.C., house last week. K-Pop sensation BTS is visiting the White House to discuss combating the rise in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans with President Biden. Its appearance Tuesday brought superstar sizzle to an otherwise sad and scary topic. The band said it was “devastated by the recent surge” of crime and intolerance against Asian Americans. It has a closed-door, Oval Office meeting with Biden later Tuesday. Across eastern Ukraine, hospitals in cities and towns near the front lines of Russia's war are increasingly coming under pressure. Many staff have fled and those who remain have to deal with an influx of war wounded on top of their usual flow of sick patients. Iran has disrupted internet access to the outside world as angry demonstrators rally over the collapse of a tower in southwestern Iran that has killed at least 34 people. Outrage and grief over the disaster continued to grow in the country. The disruption reported to The Associated Press on Tuesday has plunged the southwestern province into digital isolation, making it difficult for journalists to authenticate events and for activists to share footage and organize protests. The unofficial start of summer is offering a troubling look at what lies ahead for travelers during the peak vacation season. U.S. airlines canceled more than 2,800 flights over a five-day stretch including the Memorial Day weekend, as bad weather, crews calling in sick, and other factors snarled their operations. U.S. consumer confidence edged down in May as Americans' view of their present and future prospects dimmed in the midst of persistent inflation. The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index dipped to 106.4 in May — still a strong reading — from 108.6 in April. Hurricane Agatha has made history as the strongest hurricane ever recorded to come ashore in May during the eastern Pacific hurricane season. Remnants of Agatha were moving northeast Tuesday into Veracruz state, with sustained winds down to 30 mph. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm should dissipate by evening, though it still poses a threat of flooding. Three more nations have joined an international investigation team probing war crimes in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court prosecutor said Tuesday that he plans to open an office in Kyiv. The announcements come amid ongoing calls for those responsible for atrocities since Russia's invasion to be brought to justice. Estonia, Latvia and Slovakia signed an agreement during a two-day coordination meeting in The Hague to join Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine in the Joint Investigation Team that will help coordinate the sharing of evidence of atrocities through European Union judicial cooperation agency Eurojust. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger probably would not have won last week's Republican primary without Democrats. An Associated Press analysis of early voting data has determined that more than 37,000 people who voted in Georgia's Democratic primary two years ago cast ballots in last week's Republican primary. Voters across the political spectrum are working to stop extremists backed by Trump from winning control of state and federal governments. Dozens of states make it legal and easy for voters to participate in either party's primary. Black communities have been especially hard hit amid a national surge in traffic fatalities. Those sobering statistics could give new momentum to plans to redesign what is known in Philadelphia as the “corridor of death,” Roosevelt Boulevard. From 10% to 13% of the city's traffic fatalities occurred each year on Roosevelt prior to the pandemic. Officials say speed cameras have helped keep the number of fatalities there steady even as they have increased significantly across the city during the pandemic.
