Blamison made it back just in the nick of time to maintain the efficacy of their typical intro of "once or twice a month"! On this episode we play thought games with the 1996 comedic fable Multiplicity starring Michael Keaton and Andie McDowell and directed by Harold Ramis. But let's be honest, we hadn't talked in about a month, so most of this episode is just babbling.Other things talked about: Blake's mustache, his upcoming breakout talk at the NYC Mockingbird conference, and Jamison's trip to Japan.Clip: The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack

"Groundhog Day," released in 1993 and directed by Harold Ramis, is more than just a comedy; it's a timeless exploration of human nature, personal growth, and the possibility of redemption. At the heart of this film is Bill Murray's iconic portrayal of Phil Connors, a cynical and egotistical weatherman who finds himself inexplicably trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day repeatedly. This seemingly simple premise blossoms into a rich narrative that balances humour with profound philosophical questions, making "Groundhog Day" a film that resonates on multiple levels and remains relevant more than three decades after its release.CinematographyThe cinematography by John Bailey is subtle yet effective, capturing the small-town charm of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, while enhancing the film's repetitive structure. The film cleverly uses visual cues to signify the passage of the same day, such as the recurring shot of the alarm clock flipping to 6:00 AM, accompanied by Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe." This repetitive visual motif reinforces the loop and creates a sense of claustrophobia and familiarity, making Phil's frustration palpable to the audience. Tight framing and repetitive angles help to convey Phil's initial sense of entrapment, while the gradual introduction of more dynamic shots mirrors his evolving perspective on his predicament.StorytellingAt its core, "Groundhog Day" is a masterclass in storytelling. The script, co-written by Ramis and Danny Rubin, expertly balances the comedic and the existential. The film begins with a focus on Phil's narcissism and the comedic potential of his situation. His initial attempts to exploit the time loop for personal gain provide some of the film's most humorous moments, from binge-eating and reckless driving to seducing women. However, as the days continue to repeat, the narrative shifts to a deeper exploration of Phil's character. One of the most compelling aspects of "Groundhog Day" is its structure. The repetitive nature of the plot allows for a unique form of character development. Phil's journey from cynicism to enlightenment is not a straightforward path but a series of trials and errors, successes and failures. This cyclical progression mirrors real-life growth, where change occurs incrementally and through repeated effort. The film's pacing is meticulously crafted, ensuring the repetitive sequences remain engaging and progressively reveal more about Phil's inner transformation.Character DevelopmentBill Murray's performance as Phil Connors is nothing short of brilliant. He brings a nuanced blend of sarcasm, vulnerability, and, eventually, sincerity to the role. Initially, Phil is the epitome of a self-centred jerk, treating those around him with disdain and seeing Punxsutawney as a backwater trap. However, as the loop forces him to confront his own flaws and the impact of his actions on others, we witness a profound change. Murray's portrayal of this transformation is both believable and moving. His comedic timing is impeccable, but his ability to convey the subtler moments of despair and introspection truly anchors the film.Supporting Murray is Andie MacDowell as Rita, Phil's producer and the object of his initially superficial affections. MacDowell's performance adds a layer of warmth and earnestness to the film. Rita serves as a moral compass for Phil, embodying the virtues of kindness, patience, and genuine human connection that he initially lacks. As the bumbling cameraman Larry, Chris Elliott provides additional comic relief while also serving as a foil to Phil's arrogance.Historical and Cultural Significance"Groundhog Day" has achieved a rare status in popular culture, becoming a reference point for discussions about time loops and repetitive experiences. The film's impact extends beyond its comedic roots, influencing various genres and spawning countless homages and parodies. Its humour and existential inquiry blend has resonated with audiences and critics alike, cementing its place as a modern classic. The film also taps into universal themes of self-improvement and the search for meaning. Phil's journey is emblematic of the human condition—the struggle to overcome one's flaws, find purpose, and connect authentically with others. This timeless message ensures that "Groundhog Day" remains relevant across different generations and cultures.Relevance to Pop Culture"Groundhog Day" has left an indelible mark on pop culture, becoming a shorthand for any situation involving repetition or feeling stuck in a rut. Its influence can be seen in various films, TV shows, and even video games that explore similar themes of time loops and self-improvement. The concept of reliving the same day has been adapted in diverse genres, from the horror-thriller "Happy Death Day" to the action-packed "Edge of Tomorrow."The film's enduring popularity is also reflected in its continued relevance in discussions on personal growth and resilience. In a world where many people feel trapped by routines and unfulfilled aspirations, "Groundhog Day" offers hope and transformation. Phil's eventual realisation that he can change his circumstances by changing himself is a powerful reminder of the potential for personal redemption and the importance of empathy and kindness. In conclusion, "Groundhog Day" is a film that transcends its comedic premise to offer a profound exploration of human nature and the possibility of change. Its clever cinematography, masterful storytelling, and stellar performances combine to create an entertaining and thought-provoking narrative. As Phil Connors discovers the value of selflessness and genuine human connection, the audience is invited to reflect on their lives and how they can break free from their metaphorical time loops. For these reasons, "Groundhog Day" remains a beloved and culturally significant film that continues to inspire and entertain audiences worldwide.

Maddie and Mary join Caitlin to discuss a new addition to the Plug It Up repertoire of the monstrous feminine: bridal horror. Although weddings are beautiful and fun, they can also be catastrophic, or even deadly. 2019's Ready or Not is a favorite in general, and it perfectly captures wedding chaos and bridal horror. Plus, Samara Weaving's scream is everything. We look at themes of family, wealth, and deals with the devil, and we go on plenty of wedding tangents. *Cues Love Me Tender and lights a cigarette.*

S Groundhog Day Recently watched spent 4 hours watching TV and gained some great spiritual lessons. I've been purposing to keep my screen time at a lower level to allow for other more important activities, but these were four hours well spent. The first two hours were spent watching the first two episodes of season 3 of The Chosen. I'm not going to talk about those episodes other than to say that I highly recommend watching every episode that's been made of this series, if you haven't do so already. Look up the Chosen app as the easiest way find and watch it. What I do want to talk about is one of my favorite movies, Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray, which I recently watched again. I'll give you a spoiler alert up front if you haven't seen this movie yet I'll be sharing some key plot points. You know how you can read a portion of scripture and get a new insight and understanding that you never did when reading it before? I think that is mainly because the word is living and powerful and sharper than a two-edge sword, as it says in Hebrews 4:12. Though it's not the same effect outside of scripture, I believe God can and does speak to us any way He chooses. I received spiritual lessons from this movie that I never would have in the past and I believe it's because of where I'm at in this season. Let's start by giving a brief overview of the movie. Bill Murray plays a weatherman in Pittsburgh who is proud, cynical, and self-centered. He's forced to make the annual trip to Punxsutawney, to cover the revealing of the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil to see if he sees his shadow to determine if spring will come early. Due to a winter storm Phil the weatherman is forced to stay an extra night in this small town. In the morning, he wakes up to Groundhog day again, and soon finds out that he is repeating this day over and over. The movie is very funny, but I also found it to be very deep with some spiritual lessons. Though there were several colorful characters, the film is primarily a personal journey for Phil as he determines how to spend his time each day and how his choices are shaped by the change in his character. Initially, Phil is in denial that this repeat is actually happening. Once reality sets in, he starts out appealing to his selfish nature. First, he uses the repeated days to get information he then uses to satisfy his fleshly desires, both with women and living lavishly. Then he shifts to a reckless lifestyle since there are seemingly no consequences to his actions, including breaking the law and committing suicide. All through the movie, Phil is traveling on this business trip with his producer Rita, played by Andie McDowell, and cameraman Larry, played by Chris Elliott. Rita is a woman with high integrity and a big heart, who is also very beautiful. Phil initially tries to woo her and sleep with her by using every day to learn enough about her to manipulate her into thinking he's someone he is not. Ultimately, he runs up against the reality that he cannot fake his way to Rita's heart, no matter how much of an unfair advantage he has. Though it doesn't seem like it along the way, during his time spent with Rita, her character begins to affect Phil and he starts to see just what a louse he really is. He then makes a shift and begins to use each repeated day to improve himself as a person and to help others. The movie climaxes when all the ways he has improved himself, helped others, and become a better person touches Rita's heart and she falls in love with him as he has fallen in love with her. As you might guess, this change results in the end of the repeat of Groundhog Day, and the couple lives happily ever after. So, I'm going to ignore the false eastern/Hindu spiritual concept of reincarnation as an application of this movie and share what jumped out to me. This movie made me think of my own life as well as God's mercy as illustrated by the parable of laborers in the Vineyard found in Matthew 20. In that parable, the owner of a vineyard hires laborers throughout the day and agrees to pay them the same pay, whether they ended up working all day or only worked one hour at the end of the day. This has been interpreted to mean that those who come to a saving belief in Jesus Christ toward the end of life receiving the same gift as those who did so in the beginning of their life. While the Bible also talks about rewards in the afterlife for our good deeds and Jesus told us if we love Him to keep His commandments, the Bible describes a God who is merciful and long suffering, you might say a God of second chances. The Bible also tells us that there are consequences for our choices, both in this life and what comes after we die. Phil the weatherman was destined to a life of misery if he continued with his selfish, cynical ways. You could say that Rita represented Yahweh whose high character and big heart helped Phil to see his sinful ways, cause him to repent, and change his heart to become more like Rita. How about you, are you more like Phil in the beginning of the movie or the end of the movie? Do you have a Rita-like God who has shown you a better way to live and be? When it comes to your romantic relationships, whether you're married or single, are you thinking primarily about what you are or can get out of the relationship, or what you can give? Similarly, when it comes to your work and career, do you approach your job each day thinking about what you can get out of your job in terms of satisfaction, pay, or retirement, or are you thinking who you can minister to and how God can use you in your job to further his purposes? No matter what you've done or how selfish and wicked you may have been, like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, Yah is waiting to run out and meet you when you humble yourself, repent, and bend your knee to your Creator and His ways. Make your relationship with Yah your highest priority. Devote time to spend with Him each day including reading His word, praying and journaling as you hear from Him. Let Him be Lord of every part of your life, and your days won't seem like a repeat of Groundhog Day and will go from meaningless and sad to purposeful and joyful. E My example of faith at work is Phil the weatherman. L Logos James 4:13-16 13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow [h]we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. A H What did the lemon when he answered the phone? "Yellow"

Today, the Safari takes another break from zoo visits as I sit down and talk with world-famous author Mary Alice Monroe, author of "The Beach House" (also a movie starring Andie McDowell), and a series of books for young readers called The Islanders, including her brand new book, "Search For Treasure." While we do spend time discussing the book, the focus on this interview is actually the fact that Mary Alice uses her fiction to share a conservation message! "Search For Treasure" will teach readers about alligators, just as The Beach House and "The Islanders" will teach readers about sea turtles! Along with her writing, Mary Alice is also a volunteer on the Island Turtle Team, and a board member of both The Leatherback Trust and the South Carolina Aquarium! What is ageism? Whether it's advertising, films, TV series or even literature, it seems like all female characters are young, with smooth radiant skin and not a wrinkle in sight! You'd think women over 40 simply don't exist! Or at least, it's rare to see them in leading roles. In recent months, several actresses have gone on record saying they feel judged for having grown older. For example, Andie McDowell believes it can be difficult for older women to feel good about themselves in a society that constantly glorifies youth. Why doesn't society like the elderly? Does ageism really affect men and women differently? But aren't the elderly some of the most creditworthy consumers? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! We've got another departure from our usual format for you this week, where this time we chat culture recommendations, from the book everyone's talking about to Netflix's latest hits. Strap in for our thoughts on Emily Ratajowski's collection of essays, My Body, and the furore around it, as well as Maid (starring Margaret Qualley and her mother Andie McDowell), Squid Game and Sally Rooney's latest novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You?. Over some spicy margaritas from Tom Savano, we cover how Emily's book captures our own feelings about our younger-selves, looking back at the gendered power dynamics that shape teenagedom, how status and beauty intersect, the utterly brilliant gossip from one of the world's biggest models, plus the male gaze, motherhood (hello, Maid), The Harry Potter reunion and why John Legend really needs to confiscate Chrissy Teigen's phone. Thank you to our amazing sponsor for this episode, Tom Savano, from which you can get the tastiest bottled cocktails just in time for Christmas, from a spicy Mezcal Margarita to a Mai Tai and Mojito. Unapologetically strong, the cocktails are made with spirits sourced solely from craft distilleries - with sustainable, local links to the regions they are from - and are all inspired by Tom Savano's travels across the world. Each beautifully presented Christmas delivery box includes a drinks menu, glassware, snacks and coasters, while each bottle holds a generous five serves. Perfect for a special seasonal gift to loved ones, or to enjoy a cosy night in at home!

Imagine reliving the same day, day after day, for 34 years! That is the premise of the movie Groundhog Day, the 1993 movie starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell. Rabbi Dunner analyzes this fascinating movie plot, and folds it into the annual Jewish celebration of our Exodus from Egypt, known as Seder Night, as well as the curious custom of memorializing departed relatives on festival days, in a ritual known as Yizkor. As it turns out, the lessons learned from this movie have very far-reaching ramifications.

It’s Groundhog Day! So obviously we watched Harold Ramis’ 1993 masterpiece “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray, Andie McDowell, and Chris Elliott FOUR TIMES! We watched it over and over and over just like Bill Murray lives the same day over and over and over. Get it? Get it‽ Sorry, we’re a little delirious. Happy Groundhog Day!! In honor of Punxsutawney Phil and his prognostication today, we decided to watch Bill Murray in Groundhog Day from 1993. Have you ever had the sense of deja vu? Phil Conners definitely feels it as he lives the same day over and over in the small town of Punxsutawney, PA. Directed by Harold Ramis, Bill Murray is at his best!
KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “Groundhog Day: The Musical” directed by Susi Damilano, at San Francisco Playhouse through January 17, 2020 SF Playhouse website Text of review (differs from the edited audio version).. The entertainment world has always used branding to sell its products. Adapting best-sellers and hit plays to the screen, and adapting films to television has been going on for decades, using the same name as the book or the film to draw audiences into the new iteration. For Broadway, it hasn't quite worked that way. Musicals tended to take on new names. So Pygmalion became My Fair Lady, Anna and the King the King and I, Seven and a half cents the Pajama Game. But after Giuliani, Bloomberg and the Walt Disney Company turned Broadway into a corporate cash cow, branding now rules the street. Whether jukebox shows or film adaptations, the bigger the name the greater the hedging of bets by producers. But still, three quarters of all shows flop. Which brings us to the musicals Pretty Woman, Tootsie, King Kong, and Groundhog Day – and this last one is getting its Bay Area premiere not in a touring company but in a production at San Francisco Playhouse directed by the company's own Susi Damilano. Here's the thing, though – putting aside the Disney adaptations of animated musicals — the successful ones, like Kinky Boots or The Band's Visit or Light in the Piazza, came about not because the brand was so great, but because the story itself could sing. Groundhog Day and those other shows came about because the names were brands. What Groundhog Day, and its three compatriats all have in common is that the musical iteration, despite good reviews for all except Kong, failed to find audiences, and flopped. Familiarity apparently breeds not contempt, but indifference. Producers hedged their bets, and played not to lose. And as a character noted in the film Crazy Rich Asians, hopefully never a musical, if you play not to lose, you lose. So Groundhog Day saw its shadow, went into hiding, and never went on tour, which allowed regional theaters like SF Playhouse to pick up the mantle. Luckily for the Bay Area, this production is very good indeed. Ryan Drummond takes the Bill Murray role in a new direction; he owns the part of Phil Connors in a way one might have thought impossible given Bill Murray in the film. Elizabeth Apostal as Rita, Phil's foil and eventual lover, easily outshines Andie McDowell. In fact, the entire cast, the set, the revolving stage, all bring this show as close to a Broadway touring version as its going to get. Which helps a lot, because the songs by Tim Minchin aren't memorable, and the script by Danny Rubin is constantly fighting itself to both be original and still maintain the iconic scenes that made the film a classic. It works, kind of, but also doesn't work. Ultimately, the story of Groundhog Day could also be a metaphor for Groundhog Day the musical. It's hero Phil Conners, who sees the same day, over and over and over again, eventually achieves an epiphany. The audience of Groundhog Day, sadly, isn't as lucky. Groundhog Day, the musical, directed by Susi Damilano, plays at San Francisco Playhouse through January 18th. For more information you can go to SFplayhouse.org. His fans across the pond already knew how funny he was from the hilarious sitcom The IT Crowd. By now it’s no secret that he is equally at home in comedy and drama, like the new indie release Love After Love with Andie McDowell. On this week’s Technicolor Jesus, Matt and Adam talk with Brian Blount, President of Union Presbyterian Seminary about the 1996 Nora Ephron movie, Michael. From the heart of the mid-90’s post-Pulp-Fiction renaissance of John Travolta, this I-guess-we-call-it-a-romantic-comedy is about three tabloid reporters who track down Michael the archangel in an out of the way town in Iowa. William Hurt plays Frank Quinlan, a somewhat broken soul, who is looking for a quick buck when he meets Michael, a very bawdy and very worldly angel played by Travolta. Frank convinces Michael to road-trip back to Chicago with him so that they can get some good pictures and cash in on his story. Along the way Michael works on Frank’s heart, and opens it to one of their traveling companions, played by Andie McDowell. In the first segment, Brian leads a conversation about the value of the unexpected in Advent and how the terrestrial nature of the incarnation subverts our visions of God’s action and person. In our second segment, the group examines the Advent 2 texts for year B and how Isaiah and Mark’s vision for the coming of Christ disrupts our understandings of time and space. Finally, in our final segment Adam and Matt talk discuss Christmas music and cooking battles. So, friends, stay awake! The glory is breaking forth soon, in the meantime, while you are waiting, pass the time with another episode of Technicolor Jesus.

Hello again, fearless listeners, and sorry for the slight delay on this week's podcasting! For our latest episode, Eric ventures into territory he's not super into while Emily gushes endlessly about Hugh Grant. Have you guessed it yet? It's Four Weddings and a Funeral! This is also known as the best Hugh Grant movie of the very Hugh Grant-heavy 90s (disagree? I'll fight you.) And yes, sure, Andie McDowell is also in it, so huzzah for her if that's your thing. In any case, you have no excuse not to watch this film, because it's a. delightful and b. now on Netflix. If you'd prefer, you can also find it on Amazon. So that's helpful.Enjoy, and see you in a couple days for the full episode! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
