For many, Disney animation remains the pinnacle of the art form, especially during it's peak years in the 1990s. One of the key animators during that time was Andreas Deja, a man who helped create iconic characters such as THE LION KING's Scar, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST's Gaston, Hercules and many, many more. Now, Deja has returned with his directorial debut, MUSHKA. As a love letter to the classic Disney 2D animation, MUSHKA tells the charming a young girl who becomes best friends with an infant tiger, only for complications to develop as it grows older. In this 1on1, we speak to Deja about the magic of Disney, working with Richard Sherman and whether or not we lost anything with the move to CGI animation.
Today we are joined with the legendary Disney lead animator Andreas Deja! This man has created some of the most iconic villains and characters of our generation. From Jafar, Scar, Gaston, Lilo, Hercules, Roger Rabbit and much more! HIS RESUME IS STACKED. Andreas has just completed a new short film of his own in the classic 2D hand drawn style of animation that he is know for titled Mushka. This project took him 10 YEARS and it is a fantastic piece that projects a nostalgic feel into a brand new story. Around hearing about the film we dive into fascinating details about his career, deep layers of passion that goes into his work, why he had a run of being the lead of creating the "bad guys", the art of making the audience forget they are watching a cartoon, what he thinks about the modern day shift into 3D animation, along with incredible advice for anyone wanting to pursue a career in animation and a reminder that there is still magic in drawings.
Moderation: Jens Wolters

Andreas was 10 or 11 when he saw Walt Disney's The Jungle Book and it changed his life. As a boy in Germany he dreamed of working for the studio that captured his imagination so completely… and he made that dream come true. A master animator, he brought King Triton to life in The Little Mermaid, Scar in The Lion King, and Jafar in Aladdin, to name just a few. He never surrendered his pencil, choosing to burnish his skills rather than adapt to computer technology. For most of the last decade he's been working on an animated film of his own called Moushka. Andreas is that rare artist who has carved his own path and been rewarded for his dedication (and talent). Leonard and Jessie are longtime friends and fans.

This week on the All About the Mouse Disney Podcast we are talking all about the movies and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Even with all of the constructions going on right now to make room for Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land, there are still plenty of must-do attractions and experiences that should not be missed at this park. The news this week is also centered mostly around the movies with stories about the passing of actor/film historian and current narrator of The Great Movie Ride, an announcement of a brand new Indiana Jones motion picture installment starring Harrison Ford, a new exhibit at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco dedicated to the work of Disney artist and animator Andreas Deja, and much more!

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED))) Call or text with your comments!!! New number -> (805) 270-5785 In this episode of the Mouse Lounge, celebrate 70 years with the one that started it all, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. From the Walt Disney Family Museum: In a darkened theater filled to overflowing at the D23 Expo, I had the honor of sitting in the presence of true Disney legends and experts. Producer, Don Hahn moderates a panel discussion about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In attendance were animator, Andreas Deja, who invoked life into Scar in the Lion King, and Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Eric Goldberg, responsible for animating the Genie in Aladdin, and directing the jaw dropping Rhapsody in Blue and hilarious Flamingo with a Yo Yo sequences in Fantasia 2000, Disney historian and author, J.B. Kaufman, animation historian and prolific writer, Charles Solomon, and special guest, looking dazzling at 90 years young, Marge Gower Champion, the live action model for Snow White. Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. This week we serve up a triple feature. At the beginning of 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was taking America by storm. By using the radio medium, Walt was able to stoke the fire of his marketing machine promoting Snow White; while at the same time, entertaining a national audience. On January 2nd 1938, a radio episode of The Mickey Mouse Theater hit the airwaves, coupling elements from the picture with other famous Disney characters. Pay particular attention as Walt himself effortlessly goes from his natural speaking voice into character as Mickey. Next, scoop up slices of film from the cutting room floor and wonder, what if? Have a listen right here to the marvelous but deleted soup sequence from Snow White. Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week, enjoy a one of a kind compare and contrast as you hear back to back versions of Snow Whites Scary Adventures, first in on the west coast in Disneyland then in Walt Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom. There are striking differences between the two. Which do you like better? We close the show with unique takes from the soundtrack. First from the newly remastered original soundtrack, the infectious Silly Song; then Satchmo Armstrong teaches you how to Whistle While You Work, and finishing with Ashley Tisdales turn at Some Day My Prince Will Come. Enjoy!
