Podcast Overview: Moby & Will discuss his 30 years in the industry, where young creatives go nowadays, not focussing on selling out DJ tours & his journey with his mental health. Who is Moby: Richard Melville Hall, 11 September 1965, New York, USA. A New York DJ, recording artist, Christian, vegan and Philosophy graduate. Moby is so nicknamed because of the fact that he can trace his ancestry to the author of the famous whaling tale. This is by no means the only interesting aspect of his idiosyncratic artistic life. He refuses to travel anywhere by car because of the environmental considerations, and generally displays little of the public anonymity that is the creed of the underground DJ. In 1991, he took the Twin Peaks theme, under the guise of "Go", into the UK Top 10. Although that appealed to the more perverse natures of both mainstream and club audiences, the release of "I Feel It"/"Thousand" in 1993 was yet more bizarre. The latter track was classified by The Guinness Book Of Records as the fastest single ever, climaxing at 1,015 bpm. It was typical of Moby's playful, irreverent attitude to his work. In his youth he was a member of hardcore punk outfit the Vatican Commandos, and even substituted as singer for Flipper while their vocalist was in prison. He has brought these rock 'n' roll inclinations to bear on the world of dance music: at the 1992 DMC/Mixmag Awards ceremony he trashed his keyboards at the end of his set. His introduction to dance music began in the mid-80s: "I was drawn to it, I started reading about it, started hanging out in clubs. For me house music was the synthesis of the punk era." He collected cheap, second hand recording equipment, basing himself in an old factory/converted prison in New York's Little Italy district. The albums issued by New York dance label Instinct collect the artist's early work. Ambient comprised unissued cuts from 1988-91, composed of barely audible atmospheric interludes. Moby signed to leading independent Mute Records in 1993, and the following year released "Hymn", a transcendental religious techno odyssey, distinguished by a 35-minute ambient mix and a Laurent Garner remix. The track was included on his eclectic major label debut, Everything Is Wrong. His own remix catalogue includes Brian Eno, LFO ("Tan Ta Ra"), Pet Shop Boys, Erasure ("Chorus"), Orbital ("Speed Freak"), Depeche Mode and even Michael Jackson. He moved away from his dance base in 1996 with the thrash rock of Animal Rights, and in turn sounded more like Johnny Rotten. His "James Bond Theme' debuted at UK number 8 in November 1997. The attendant I Like To Score was an uneasy experiment in soundtrack work. Another change of style was apparent on 1999"s Play, a superb album on which several tracks were based around sampled field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in the earlier part of the century. Play became a remarkable sleeper hit, thanks in the main to the licensing of every track on the album for use in advertisements. Moby repeated the Play formula to lesser effect on 18. The world shut down soon after and our connection turned into a long distance mentorship dynamic (as they have been mentoring others and holding space in Johannesburg for BIPOC fems and queers @ustheythemstudio). Somehow I missed that we both were raised very rural and were influenced by punk, skateboarding, and hard drugs. (Big city kids in the making for sure). Joy's patterns resonated with me right away (they also choose to work by hand with the body and are very much trauma informed). I sincerely appreciate dear friends making time to engage in this project together (somehow this container deepens my sense of our connections). Thank you!

The Last Bohemians
S4 Ep7: Johanna Went: the cult performance art-punk on feminism, fake blood, embracing ageing and inspiring Lady Gaga

The Last Bohemians

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2022 34:43

Speak to anyone from the 1980s punk scene in Los Angeles and they'll tell you: Johanna Went is an underground legend. While the bands like Black Flag, Fear and X were thrashing out their three chords and the truth, Went would take to the stage at clubs like The Masque, Club Lingerie and Hong Kong Cafe and perform between the live shows. The crowd hadn't seen anything like it before. She wasn't a punk musician per se but the “hyena of performance art”, whose transgressive spectacles of New Wave theatre, experimental noise, elaborate and crude costumes, chaotic rituals, and gory props like pig heads and fake blood – lots of blood – built a cult following and predated Lady Gaga's meat dress and Peaches' raucous stage antics and costumes by decades. Johanna's shows were wild, depraved and often grotesque, boldly taking on themes like female pleasure and menstruation. Take her 1988 performance Passion Container, in which she pulled giant bloodied tampons out of a silk vagina and chucked them into the crowd – this was pre-riot grrrl and before L7's legendary tampon-flinging performance at Reading Festival in 1992.  Many aren't sure where Johanna Went went but The Last Bohemians: LA, supported by Audio-Technica, found her living a quieter life, in the beach town of Ventura, California. Across her garden table, she looks back at her transgressive work and talks about the magic of the 1980s punk scene, growing up an outsider, the beauty of performance art and why embracing ageing is the punkest move of all. Audio-Technica's commitment to the user experience and their devotion to high quality design, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution has placed them at the forefront of the industry for the last 60 years. ABOUT THE LAST BOHEMIANS Journalist and broadcaster Kate Hutchinson launched The Last Bohemians in 2019, pairing the audio with stunning portraits by photographer Laura Kelly. It featured 86-year-old Molly Parkin's stories of self-pleasuring, LSD countess Amanda Feilding's trepanning tales and Pamela Des Barres' reflections on supergroupiedom. The series won silver for Best New Podcast at the 2020 British Podcast Awards and was a finalist at the 2021 Audio Production Awards. Season two featured folk legend Judy Collins; British fashion icon Zandra Rhodes, dealing with the aftermath of losing her lover while celebrating 50 years in fashion; anarcho-punk innovator and illustrator Gee Vaucher; and the controversial witch at the heart of the 1970s occult boom, Maxine Sanders. In 2021, The Last Bohemians launched a lockdown special with performance artist Marina Abramović; it returned in 2022 with the UK's greatest living painter, Maggi Hambling, as well as Bowie's former best friend Dana Gillespie and theatre actor Cleo Sylvestre, and launched an LA series, supported by Audio-Tecnica, in summer. thelastbohemians.co.uk patreon.com/thelastbohemians instagram.com/thelastbohemianspod twitter.com/thelastbohospod

I'm stoked to bring back Derek Zanetti of the Homeless Gospel Choir for our SECOND conversation of this podcast - nearly 2.5 years since our first chat. If you’d like to like to listen to our first conversation from Dec of 2017, click here!Zanetti writes protest songs that are meant to make people think and find some form of comfort during these troublesome times. The Pittsburgh, PA-based musician has been creating tunes and touring the world for over a decade and his new album is his first since creating a full-band for touring. “This Land is Your Landfill” further exemplifies Zanetti’s witty yet unabashedly earnest songwriting, which is a constant source of community building within his circles. This conversation focuses a lot on the album, as well as meanders into very political spaces, which makes sense given the moment we’re currently living in. Hope you dig it! I had fun and I think you will too.MUSIC NOTE:- This week you got to hear tunes from the new Homeless Gospel Choir album, “This Land is Your Landfill,” which comes out next Friday, April 24 through A-F Records.- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Don’t Compare,” “Art Punk,” “Punk as Fuck.” You can check out the entire “This Land is Your Landfill” album through all of the streaming platforms NEXT WEEK! You can even download the album on bandcamp!- Also, if you’re into physical music, make sure you snag a vinyl copy of the album as well!

In short, today's episode has me a bit frustrated. I kept getting stuck reading headlines about the military's operations on the border aka my BACKYARD. It's surreal to say the least, and hard to think of as real, despite there being evidence to the fact. I featured excerpts from two different news stations on the show, one from a national outlet, Democracy now, and one from a local outlet, KRGV Channel 5, which I've been watching since I was a kid. The perspectives are very different. Where Democracy Now is a left-leaning operation, they also make sure to feature some of the more damning and volatile part of the news cycle, while our local station (one of 3) gathers a variety of opinions (from people who actually cross the border regularly, aka older latines who have a very complicated perspective on life in the rio grande valley. Nothing has ever been simple here since it was overtaken by white entrepreneurs in the 10s and 20s looking to establish a new tourist attraction on the border. Our culture is mixed, our experiences of prejudice are varied, with even poorer, less affluent whites experiencing prejudice and a seeming lack of privilege within the confines of mostly latine social circles. It's honestly not something I can break down into a blog post, it's so complicated...and infuriating. Growing up here, you don't think about how the Rio Grande Valley fits into the world picture. You don't realize how living on the border of a violently imperialist country means you never truly have control of your surroundings. The military can barge in on the whim of a raving racist rapist who--while your country may not have elected him president--is still able to rally massive support from his followers by simply echoing their violent rhetoric with his own little shit stain of flair. Case in point: there are currently 200 militia members mobilized and ready to invade the border with their guns, hunting gear, bait & tackle, whatever, all because of Donald Trump's fearmongering about the border. These assholes have the resources to gather weaponry and organize themselves in such a way that they can act as armed vigilantes to further whatever warped understanding of the world they have. That's terrifying. I understand the historical value of militias but in those days the militias were not aligned with the goverment, they were created to defend the people's (white ones mostly) right to autonomy should the government try and take that away. These days militias have been reduced to the playthings of entitled white men with money who fear people of color, believe women are beneath them, and think the president is their best fucking friend. Great. I'm rambling a bit now. More news about the patreon and upcoming music market as it arrives. Thanks for listening this week and every week. Here we have the first official Blistering Listens & Strange Sounds Thank You episode dedicated and painstakingly curated for a Halloween audience, since Halloween lands on this coming Wednesday. Technically if you're reading this, that's tomorrow, so let that be noted. I'm really not looking forward to having my neighborhood filled with cars--making it impossible for me to park and get into my apartment, but you know what's worse than that? The US' delivery of military forces to the border, further militarizing an already militarized zone, in response to the incoming wave of Central-American refugees seeking shelter in the United States from the dangers of their homelands (which were orchestrated in large part by the United States). I honestly don't know what to say to a situation like this. The RGV will become a very tense place once again, no doubt we will also be filled to the brim with journalists from every publication imaginable spinning this story for their respective outlets' audiences. I don't know what will happen to the shelters who have been tending to incoming immigrants since 2014 when this new wave arrives. They'll need all of the volunteers they can get, and all of the supplies they can get. I'll be looking into ways to make myself useful in this time. I encourage you, reader/listener, to do the same. The buzz for New York art-punk band Bodega began brewing months before their debut album was even announced.   Signed to acclaimed independent punk label What's Yr Rupture?, much of the hype surrounding the band can be attributed to their phenomenal live show.   We sat down with Benji Hozie and Nikki Belfiglio of Bodega to discuss how the debut album explores their love/hate relationship with technology, the hypocrisy of cinephilia, and how Nikki's public masturbation as a child inspired the song "Gyrate".
