Welcome to the LI Law Podcast.  We feature legal issues and developments which affect Long Island residents and business owners.  I am your host, Zehava Schechter. Our guest on this 62nd episode is Rachel Silverstein, a 2020 Touro Law Center graduate and GLAAD-nominated comic book writer. During law school, Rachel received the Exemplary Contributions to the Quality of Student Life Award at graduation. She was the president of the LGBT+ law society, served as teaching assistant for legal writing classes, and managed public relations for the intellectual property law society. Prior to law school, Rachel received her bachelor's degree in geology at College of Charleston and her master's degree in geoscience with a concentration in extinct elephant paleontology at East Tennessee State University. Her first co-written graphic novel, Renegade Rule, was published by Dark Horse Comics in 2021.  Rachel's love of comic books began in middle school.  She merged her affinity for comic books with that of the law in law school by publishing her first law review article about obscenity laws as they relate to comic books.  It is called The Law of Obscenity in Comic Books and can be downloaded through the Touro Law Review digital commons here: "Obscenity in Comic Books" by Rachel Silverstein (tourolaw.edu). Her second review article discussed publicity laws as they relate to persons of interest or celebrities in comic books.  It is called Comic Books, the First Amendment, and the “Best Test” for Right of Publicity Issues and can be downloaded through the Touro Law Review digital commons here: https://digitalcommons.tourolaw.edu/lawreview/vol36/iss4/19/. So, we definitely see a trend here in relation to comic books. Our topic of discussion is: All about comic books…and the law.  If you want to contact Rachel Silverstein directly, her e-mail address is:  RachelCSilverstein@gmail.com. She can also be reached via her website: www.theflirtymango.com. Her graphic novel, Renegade Rule, may be found at your local comic book shop or at Amazon here: Renegade Rule: Kahn, Ben, Silverstein, Rachel, Beck, Sam: 9781506718019: Amazon.com: Books or anywhere else books are sold. Welcome to the LI Law Podcast.  We feature legal issues and developments which affect Long Island residents and business owners.  The podcast focuses on Long Island law topics and includes greater New York court and legislative happenings.  If you are one of the approximate 8 million residents of Long Island (Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings counties), or want to enjoy all law-related matters on Long Island, this podcast is for you! During the Covid-19 health crisis, episodes will be published as soon as they are recorded to keep listeners updated on the most up-to-date legal developments on Long Island.  Today we are focusing on the United States Census, which determines for the next 10 years how many members of the House of Representatives will represent Long Island and how federal funds will be distributed throughout the United States.  The greater our response, the more federal funds (and members of the House of Representatives) Long Island will receive. Our guest on this 48th episode is Roseanne Dorfman, Administrative Assistant to both the Outreach Services Department and the Digital Resources Department of the Nassau Library System (NLS).  The Nassau Library System is a cooperative library system chartered under New York State Educational Law 255.  It is a consortium comprised of 54 member libraries and a Service Center for the libraries. Each member library is independent, autonomous, supported by local taxes, and governed by its own board of trustees. All public libraries in Nassau County are members of the NLS.  Prior to the current health crisis, the NLS was scheduling the Outreach Census Van to visit member libraries and other organizational census events. Unfortunately, 95% of those events were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which makes getting the word out about being counted even more important!  Census website: www.My2020Census.gov. Census telephone number (interpreters available): 844.330.2020. Roseanne is also the Program Coordinator for the West Hempstead Public Library.  The West Hempstead Public Library offers many virtual classes (e.g. exercise, Spanish language, book discussion, etc.) to residents and non-residents alike.  Here is the website: https://www.whplibrary.org.  If you have specific questions about WHPL programming, please e-mail Roseanne directly. Dear Listeners, I do not have to tell you that the amount of information (some accurate, some not) which is prevalent and available from all sources now is overwhelming...which is why I hope to continue to provide some relief for listeners who need to escape the fear and anxiety by thinking about something else at least for a few minutes.  Therefore, I will continue to broadcast episodes which have nothing to do with our current health crisis here on Long Island as well as throughout the world.  As I look through my favorite podcasts, they are all focusing on events which are largely beyond our control unless we are self-quarantining.  So, I will do what I can to help all of us stay calm. Yet, we live on this planet and cannot deny that major changes have occurred to the way we live our lives.  We are getting through this together and will continue to do so by helping each other.  To that point: 1. If you are young and healthy - and available to deliver groceries to older Long Island residents who are staying home (or if you need groceries and cannot leave your home) - you can call Jayne Guarino at 516.320.0715 or e-mail her at Jayne.Guarino128@gmail.com to volunteer. 2. If you have received your letter from the U.S. Census Bureau - or not - now is the time to be counted!  Under-reporting will cost Long Island $ and lead to less federal money to our area for schools, roads, and other public services, as well as a possible loss of 1 or more seats in the House of Representatives.  Please respond by April 1st at www.My2020Census.gov. If you have positive and encouraging reports of how Long Islanders are helping one another, please e-mail me at LILawPodcast@gmail.com so I may share your stories with other listeners. Thank you. Stay safe, well, and healthy!    Zehava

Our guest on this 15th episode is Demar Tyson, Publisher of the Urban Life News Magazine, clothing designer, and licensed barber in Baldwin, New York. Demar Tyson has been incarcerated four times at the Nassau County Correctional Facility, serving a combined 16 years in upstate and federal facilities starting at the age of 16. Tyson's most recent term of incarceration was in a federal facility for a period of 52 months. These experiences have afforded him a deeper knowledge and insight into the criminal justice system and its impact on inmates and their families.  It was during this last term of incarceration that Demar began to realize that he had a greater purpose. Rather than self-loathe or succumb to the negativity around him, Demar became focused on improving his circumstances by way of motivational speaking and self-empowerment. Tyson firmly believed that “As a man Thinketh in his Heart, so is he,” which comes from his favorite book by James Allen. The book laid the seeds for a paradigm shift and has become a part of Demar's lifestyle and daily mantra.  From these experiences came the birth of URBAN LIFE NEWS MAGAZINE in 2014, a platform of expression and education, insight and motivation. This one articulate and dope publication combines Hip Hop - Street Culture and refined living. The Past, Present and The Future of Hip Hop Culture show-CASED tells the greatest truth. Dropping jewels and giving education through flash back pictures of neighborhood stars and legendary hustles, keeping listeners informed of the latest laws with legal essays and briefs which provide insight into Hip Hop Street culture and ultimately, reform. Demar hopes to inspire currently and formerly incarcerated persons and has worked with the Nassau County District Attorney's office on matters involving re-entry into society of gang members as well as advising juveniles detained by the system.  He is married with 2 children.
