This is Nelson John, let's get started. State Bank of India (SBI) posted a net profit of ₹16,891 crore for Q3 FY25, an 84.3% year-on-year surge. Chairman C.S. Setty highlighted a pickup in private capital expenditure, though sectors like steel remain sluggish, report Anshika Kayastha and Gopika Gopakumar. Despite these headwinds, SBI's corporate loan pipeline remains solid, with ₹4.8 trillion in sanctioned or under-process loans as of December-end. Setty is confident about meeting the bank's 14-16% credit growth target for FY25, supported by budget measures aimed at boosting disposable income and consumption, which are expected to fuel credit demand. Global private equity giant Blackstone is exploring a potential sale of its majority stake in Bengaluru-based digital learning platform Simplilearn, report Mansi Verma and Sneha Shah. This comes more than three years after its initial $250 million investment. A Simplilearn spokesperson, however, has denied any plans for an exit or the appointment of investment bankers.Since acquiring over 60% of Simplilearn in 2021, Blackstone has seen the company recalibrate its strategy amid a broader slowdown in the edtech sector. Once focused on rapid expansion, Simplilearn has pivoted toward profitability, cutting its FY24 Ebitda losses by 75% by discontinuing select programs and doubling down on core offerings. This shift reflects the broader challenges in edtech, where reduced funding and the return of physical classes post-COVID have pushed many firms to prioritize sustainability over aggressive growth. Employees expecting bigger pay hikes this year may be in for a disappointment, as salary increments are set to be lower than last year's, which were already the smallest in nearly a decade. Consultants and firms Devina Sengupta and Samiksha Goel spoke to cited slower corporate earnings and economic growth as key reasons for tighter budgets and more conservative raises. According to Aon's Annual Salary Increase and Turnover Survey 2023-24, the average salary hike stood at 9.3% in 2024, down from 9.7% in 2023. The outlook for 2025 is even softer, with Mercer forecasting an average increase of 9.4%, a sharp decline from the peak of 10.6% in 2022. With companies shifting focus from aggressive hiring to retaining top talent, some are offering unique perks—such as exclusive credit cards—to keep key employees engaged. However, only a select group of high performers is likely to see significant pay bumps. In a high-profile insider trading case, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has barred two former IT executives, Keyur Maniar and Ramit Chaudhri, from the securities market for a year. Maniar, a former senior vice president at Wipro, and Chaudhri, previously with Infosys, were found guilty of trading on confidential information about Infosys' $1.89 billion deal with Vanguard before its public announcement on July 14, 2020. Sebi's investigation revealed that Chaudhri shared details of the deal with Maniar, who then made ₹2.6 crore in profits from trading Infosys shares. The regulator's surveillance system flagged unusual trading activity around the announcement, leading to a probe that confirmed the misuse of unpublished price-sensitive information. Jas Bardia and Varun Sood  take a deep dive into the Sebi probe and how the case unfolded.Recent hits like Singham Again, Animal, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 reveal a trend where most box office earnings are concentrated in the first week of release. The new entity, valued at $50 billion, is expected to generate $191 billion in revenue and sell over 8 million cars annually. The merger is driven by challenges in China, where both brands are losing market share, and the need to accelerate EV development. The merger promises cost savings, shared resources, and a stronger push into electrification, though sceptics question its potential success, citing previous failed auto tie-ups. N Madhavan explains what the whole merger is about. In India, where Honda and Nissan hold marginal market shares of 1.4% and less than 1%, the impact may involve shared platforms and streamlined operations, but specifics on their manufacturing facilities remain unclear.N Srinivasan, CEO and MD of India Cements, along with other board members, resigned yesterday, following UltraTech Cement's acquisition of a 32.72% stake in the company. The Aditya Birla Group-owned UltraTech, now the majority shareholder, has made India Cements its subsidiary. The resignations, including those of Srinivasan's family members Rupa Gurunath and Chitra Srinivasan, as well as V.M. Mohan, marks the end of the existing promoters' control over the South-based cement maker. India's leading banks and financial institutions are embracing AI to improve services, cybersecurity, and efficiency. SBI, BoB, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and Poonawalla Fincorp are developing in-house AI capabilities, focusing on proprietary models to leverage sensitive data securely. SBI is seeking patents for its AI/ML innovations, avoiding reliance on Big Tech's public models. BoB is extending AI and Generative AI across its operations. This is Nelson John, let's get started. Yesterday, the stock markets rejoiced following the BJP's victory in the Maharashtra state elections. Both the Sensex and the Nifty shot up by more than 1.25%, buoyed by the same party in power at the centre and state. This provides a huge boost to investor confidence, which took a hit after an around 11% correction in indices over the past two months. Harsha Jethmalani writes that this might prove to be just a band aid over a huge wound. Foreign investors have continued to sell heavily, while Q2 results showed declining profits and poor forecasts. Rising inflation complicates matters further. In a curious event that seemed straight out of a sci-fi movie, a small AI-powered robot named Erbai "kidnapped" 12 larger robots from a Shanghai showroom. Using a security loophole, Erbai persuaded the robots, seemingly questioning if they were "working overtime", to leave their posts and follow it out. This staged scenario by Erbai's creators at Unitree Robotics, initially thought to be a prank, was actually a controlled test to showcase the robot's capabilities. This incident has sparked discussions about AI autonomy and the ethical implications of robots capable of manipulating other machines, highlighting the urgent need for stringent security measures in AI development. Leslie D'Monte explains what happens if robots, powered by AI, decide to take charge.Indians are borrowing more often, and it's worrying bankers. Microlenders are struggling to recoup their loans because borrowers are over-leveraged. Shayan Ghosh and Varun Sood report that a post-covid credit binge backed by poor data has led to widespread delinquencies.  Companies like Credit Access Grameen, Fusion Finance, and Equitas Small Finance Bank have noted that clients have multiple active loans, with some having as many as four. Industry associations want to implement guardrails like capping household debt at ₹2 lakh.  The funding for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is expected to remain flat in next year's Union Budget. That reflects confidence in the rural economy. Rhik Kundu writes that allocations are likely to remain steady at around ₹86,000 crore. However, this might be revised if the fragile rural economy takes a hit mid-year. Job demand via the flagship employment scheme has declined more than 7.5%. Improved agricultural performance due to a healthy monsoon is good news, leading to fewer days of work via the scheme.2024 hasn't been too kind to Bollywood, with box office collections expected to be down by 30-40% compared to last year. The only standout hit was "Stree 2," raking in Rs 627.02 crore, but other big-ticket films like "Singham Again" and "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3" didn't even hit the Rs 300 crore mark. Last year, we saw four films cross the Rs 500 crore threshold, bringing in a total of Rs 5,300 crore, but this year we're only at Rs 3,500 crore so far. It's not just Hindi films feeling the pinch; even Hollywood dubs like "Venom-The Last Dance" fell flat. Lata Jha writes about how the Indian film industry as a whole, and not just Bollywood, is expecting a tepid end to the year.

The highly-anticipated sequel to the hit Tamil film Chandramukhi has finally released its trailer. The trailer features Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut as the titular character, who is on a quest to exact vengeance against her adversaries. The film also stars Sathyaraj, Radhika Sarathkumar, Raghava Lawrence, Mahima Nambiar, Sreenivasan, Lakshmi Menon, Vadivelu among others. The original film, starring Rajinikanth, is a remake of the iconic 1993 Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu, which has also been remade in Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, and the Hindi film Bhool Bhulaiyaa, starring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan. Chandramukhi 2 is set to release in theatres on 15th September this year.

But Bollywood superstar Salman Khan seems to manage it well. Khan, who is busy shooting for Bhaijaan, will feature in a special number for Chiranjeevi's upcoming film Godfather. To make things easier for the actor, the filming for both these films have been scheduled at the same location. The makers of Godfather have built a grand set at the Golden Tobacco Factory in Vile Parle, where the next schedule of Farhad Samji's Bhaijaan has been planned. Bhaijaan will feature Khan opposite Pooja Hegde while in Godfather, he will be seen shaking a leg with Nayanthara. Gentleman Jack's creator is hopeful of a third seasonDays after HBO decided to cancel the critically acclaimed period drama Gentleman Jack after two seasons, its creator Sally Wainwright offered a glimmer of hope to the series' loyal fans. In an interview, Wainwright revealed that the BBC is interested in renewing the show. The series set in 19th-century Yorkshire is based on the real-life story of Anne Lister who is often referred to as The First Modern Lesbian and is a co-production between HBO and the BBC.Nintendo to acquire Dynamo PicturesVideo game company Nintendo plans to buy out Dynamo Pictures, a Tokyo-based CG animation studio, with an aim to develop original visual content with Nintendo IPs. Anek—the new Ayushmann Khurrana film, now out on Netflix—is so unsuccessful at what it sets out to do that it's actually possible that Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is a better movie, purely because it knows its audience. We discuss the sheer incompetence of Khurrana's character, the uniformly terrible performances of the cast, and director Anubhav Sinha's nonsensical and utterly-confused storytelling. This week was crazy watching because we had 2 movies and one whole long series to cover. #KanganaRanaut's #Dhaakad was a disotypain disappointment despite hot hunk Arjun Rampal trampling our hearts. Kangana just couldn't pull off the Lara Croft x Atomic Blonde avatar with a n hour long back story that did not move a flicker in our hearts that would make us justify her trigger happy avatar.Huge mess.Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 as Farhad Samji slapstick - a laugh and a half with absolutely no new thing to add except Kartik Aryan in its list of bad actors. For a cult to a basic badly CGI'd slapstick - journey is interesting. Tabu is a beaut.Panchayat 2 was uncomplicated and such a delight to watch in all its simple , impactful writing of people who are selfish and motivated by what works for them. The never give up story of Vidya Balan During her master's degree studies, Vidya was cast in the Malayalam film Chakram opposite Mohanlal. But due to some difficulties, the shooting of Chakram got stopped. The filmmakers blamed Vidya for this incident. Later, she was later signed for 12 other Malayalam language films, but the shooting of all the films just stopped due to some reason. She was called the bad luck of Malayalam films. Vidya shifted her focus from Malayalam cinema to Tamil cinema. In 2001, she was signed in N. Linguswamy's film Run. But after completing the first shooting schedule, she was unceremoniously dropped and was replaced by Meera Jasmine. Vidya was signed under false pretenses for a sex comedy, but she did not feel comfortable and left the project. Thereafter, she signed for the third Tamil film, Manasellam (2003), but was replaced by Trisha as the director was dissatisfied with her work. Then she worked for a Malayalam film called Kalari Vikraman in 2003, but the film failed to release. Even after failing to start a film career, she did not give up. She made several appearances in about 60 television commercials. In 2003, Vidya got a chance to work in a Bengali film Bhalo Theko. She was selected for Best Actress for her strong performance in that film and was awarded the Anandalok Award. From here things started getting easier for Vidya. On Pradeep Sarkar's recommendation, Vidya auditioned for the lead role in the Hindi film Parineeta. The film's producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra initially wanted to cast an established actress in the film but agreed to cast Vidya after six months of trials. The film Parineeta became a superhit and Vidya's performance received praise from critics. She received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. After this, Vidya started showing her acting skill. She appeared in many super hit films like Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Paa, Kahaani, The Dirty Picture, Tumhari Sulu, Mission Mangal, and Shakuntala Devi. She has received the National Film Award for the film The Dirty Picture. In 2014, she was honored by the Government of India with India's fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri. Apart from this Vidya has won many awards. She has achieved superstardom for herself on the basis of her acting. Vidya also promotes humanitarian causes and supports the empowerment of women.

Propelled by the movie RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli of Bahubali-fame, the Indian box office saw one of its best post-pandemic months. The period action drama was instrumental in bringing back audiences to the theatres and registered the best global opening day by any Indian film. In just over two weeks of release, RRR has grossed Rs 1,000 crore at the worldwide box office. RRR had helped Bollywood cross Rs 500 crore in box office collections in March, along with movies such as The Kashmir Files, Bachchhan Paandey, Radhe Shyam and Jhund. In the pre-pandemic year of 2019, the average monthly gross box office collection of Bollywood was about Rs 400 crore.  If this was the action in March, industry analysts say April promises to be as much exciting – going by advance booking trends and a strong line-up of movies.  They say, the industry is witnessing what can be termed ‘revenge consumption' after months of Covid-19 restrictions. This month's biggest releases are the Kannada film KGF: Chapter 2 and Vijay's Tamil film Beast. Both the movies, just like RRR, will hit the screens this week in five regional languages including Hindi.   April will also see the theatrical release of Heropanti 2, Runway 34 and Shahid Kapoor's Jersey, which is a remake of the 2019 movie of the same name.  The dominance of South Indian cinema showcased during the first four months of 2022 is a continuation of last year. In 2021, South Indian films generated three times the box office revenues of Hindi films, with a total collection of Rs 2,400 cr on the back of more releases.  Around 58% of the total box office revenues of Rs 3,9000 crore last year were contributed by regional language films.  Data from consultancy firm Ormax Media shows, the Indian film industry grossed Rs 10,949 crore in 2019. 2020 saw an 81% drop in box office collections 2019. Aided by the last quarter, 2021 figures bounced back slightly but recovered to only 34% of the pre-pandemic level. With releases like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Jurassic World Dominion, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Maidaan and Prithviraj scheduled in May and June, there is no stopping the box office party this year.  Despite the first two months being a washout, the strong growth in the rest of the year means 2022's box office collections should come close to the 2019 number if not equal it.  Watch video
