This episode, titled "Taking a Bite Out of Life," begins on a humorous note with Baylor Barbee sharing an anecdote about his puppy biting his passport, leading to a broader discussion about making our mark on the world. Barbee masterfully uses this incident as a metaphor to encourage listeners to "take a bite out of life" by collecting meaningful experiences and ensuring that wherever we go, we leave a memorable impression. Barbee emphasizes the importance of having 'stamps' in the passport of our lives—symbolizing enriching experiences and personal growth. He urges us to maximize our days and to venture out beyond our comfort zones. By presenting the concept of 'motive' in everything we do, he makes a compelling case for understanding the reason behind our actions to make our time count. Key Takeaways: Cherish Experiences: Strive to fill your life with varied experiences, just as a passport collects stamps from different countries. Maximize Each Day: Even within your local environment, aim to engage in activities that nurture growth and learning. Understand Your Motives: Knowing the 'why' behind your actions makes your experiences more meaningful and goal-oriented. Be Intentional: Focus on what you want to be known for and actively work towards leaving a lasting impact in that area. Make Your Time Count: Act in a way that ensures you're remembered for positive contributions and interactions. Notable Quotes: "We gotta start taking a bite out of the pages." "Do you have stamps in your life? Meaning, do you have meaningful experiences that you've done?" "If you have a motive, if you have a focus and people know your focus, think of how much more meaningful and impactful that time spent there." "What are you sinking your teeth into?" "Sink your teeth into something that you have. Make sure that you have a life that counts."
Today, Hunter is joined by Molly Gilbert and Jason Schwarz to discuss the plan to implement Public Defender workload standards across the state of Washington. Despite not being a centralized Public Defender system, the Public Defenders of Washington, spurred by the State Supreme Court, figured out how to work with the state bar to get workload standards. As they sit on the verge of getting enforceable standards approved by the State Supreme Court, Hunter, Molly, and Jason explore how these workload standards came to be and what other states can learn from this process. When we think of “food insecurity”, many of us think of extreme poverty in the global south, not of Australia and other first-world countries. Nevertheless, food insecurity is a serious issue here – and one that will only continue to grow. Climate change brings with it warmer temperatures and rising sea levels that threaten staple crops, and an increase in natural disasters that pressure supply chains already challenged by global events such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. This combination is creating a perfect storm, reducing access to reliable food sources even for the most privileged among us. Who's facing food insecurity? How will we feed more people than ever on an ever-warming planet? And what can we do to help? I've heard stories of vicious mosquitoes forcing people to shelter in their homes during the summer or needing to slather themselves with lotions, potions and insecticides if they dared to venture outside. It wasn't until I visited Minnesota one July that I was misfortunate enough to experience a dreaded bloodletting mosquito attack. It gave me a much better appreciation for the discomfort our dogs experience when being bitten by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. Today's guest is Dr. Ed Koronowski, a Technical Veterinary Service Manager for Ceva Animal Health. We are going to chat about ‘Taking the Bite Out of What is Bugging Your Pet'. Every year more than 25,000 deaths worldwide are attributed to this virus. Tragically, a very effective vaccine is available to prevent these fatalities but are not being disseminated to those in need. You may think this international scourge is ebola. Ebola was estimated to cause a demise of about 11,000 persons in 2015. The disease I'm referring to is rabies, a preventable disease. One that affects people and animals. With your assistance this disease can be eradicated. My guest is Dr. Richard Ford, an emeritus professor of medicine at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, an expert on rabies and its worldwide impact. Questions or comments?
