Jose Miguel is a Filipino singer-songwriter based in the south side of Manila. Heavily influenced by jazz, folk, and big band music, it's no surprise that he believes he was born in the wrong era. The authenticity and the distinct slick sound and energy of that time are what his music is. An old soul living in the new, his work encapsulates themes, melodies, and words that 100% speak to him-and he hopes it speaks to you, too. With suave vocals, a charismatic presence, and innate musical talent, Jose Miguel could've easily pushed forward with sounds and genres most familiar to today's generation. Instead, he pushed the rewind button and stayed true to his roots of jazz standards and big band music. However, that's not to claim that jazz is a genre of the past. Its resurgence first broke into the scene again through artists like Laufey, Stephen Sanchez, and Bruno Major who have been gaining massive streaming numbers and popularity, especially on social media platforms like TikTok. If you still believe that jazz is just old-fashioned music, Jose Miguel is on a mission to reverse that notion. Today's audience is a critical bunch–they like music that speaks deeply to them and support artists that they can easily connect and resonate with. They see through the honesty and relatability of music. That's what matters to them and luckily, that's what Jose Miguel is all about. The album is comparable to a diary–expressing intrusive thoughts, sharing exciting moments, and displays of overthinking anything and everything. In other words, simply writing from the soul. Jose Miguel mentions that all the songs were inspired by real life experiences that left an impact on him, and translated into sophisticated and polished ways of storytelling. Paired with the stories are masterful melodies and refined instrumentals that represent the sounds of the golden age but still incorporating touches of sounds from today, so there's something for everyone. The best way to interpret the album is that it's an old soul living in the new. Jose Miguel hopes the album resonates with the listeners lyrically and sonically and enjoys it with a little singing and dancing. It's a dream come true to finally share the music with everybody and he hopes to also give confidence to those people who want to pursue their dreams and raise the flag of homegrown Filipino talent.
Cory's cast is off and he's here to tell you to “go get hip” to Bruno Major! The soulful, jazzy British singer-songwriter shares why he prefers to record in his bedroom than a studio to create his “relatively lo-fi” music. “It's far more important to be transmitting a privacy than an audio quality,” Major says. But he's quick to point out that you can get good audio quality recording at home and discloses his gear of choice—shoutout to the Shure SM7B. Together, they discuss the state of record labels and streaming in 2023—“if you're making good music,” Major says, “it'll find a home”—working with other artists—“I think what I bring to the table is probably harmonic knowledge and an ability with words…. I can't really do it on cue”—and mental health. On his journey from his early days as a shred-head—“I just wanted to play really fast all the time”—into classical and jazz playing, and eventually to becoming a singer and songwriter, Major elaborates:“If you look at something like Grant Green. Grant Green is basically playing glorified blues licks over a jazz aesthetic. He's doing very simple stuff but it's still incredible jazz guitar because he has his own thing. He has his own voice. And crucially, he has incredible time. I kind of found my voice as a guitar player through the medium of songwriting in a strange way. Because my guitar playing on my songs is what makes my guitar playing.”Listen to the full episode here: https://bit.ly/WongNotesGet 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Bruno Major: https://www.brunomajor.com/Hit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/wongnotespodIG:
Peter Wise is a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Brooklyn, New York. His sound marries introspective lyricism with bluesy guitar lines, laid back rhythms, anthemic hooks, and soulful vocals. It is both familiar and distinct, combining his love for the early seventies, southern California folk /rock storytelling, nineties Neo-soul and R&B grooves and modern pop / rock melodies to create a style uniquely his own. His latest single “Only Gotta Start” is the first to be released off of his upcoming 13-track album and sees the rebirth of Wise as an artist, as he enters a new chapter of being unapologetically himself. Written, performed, produced, mixed and mastered entirely by himself, this new track sees Wise taking complete control over the music he creates. “Only Gotta Start” is a song about letting go - letting go of dark thoughts, letting go of pride and ego, and letting go of hurt and frustration. Wise confides, “I was feeling pretty burned out with my life at the time I wrote this song. I felt that, despite being extremely busy and making a concerted effort to move forward professionally and personally, I wasn't making any forward progress. I really wanted to move on in my life, see progress in my career and progress in letting go of a past relationship.” “Only Gotta Start” is a message of renewal and a reminder to others that when ghosts of the past seem to haunt our present and/or future, all we have to do, and ultimately can do, is make the conscious decision to change our thinking, be grateful for what we do have, and let go of the weight of whatever it is that seems to stop us from moving forward. Sonically, the new song is inspired by the likes of Bruno Major, Billie Marten and The 1975. Through jangly guitars, warm vocals and an upbeat, feel-good rhythm, Wise never fails to put a smile on your face. The creation of the track also involved some experimental techniques, with the musician sharing, “I found my older sister's child-sized violin that she had when she first started playing and I tried to make music with that. I'm no violinist, but I found that trying to make music out of an instrument that I had no technical ability with forced me to be much more creative. I ended up finding a way to pick the violin and resample it to add the strings sounds that you hear in the intro and choruses.” The upcoming album touches on a multitude of real, raw and relatable themes, including struggling with getting older, not being who you thought you'd be, and not being able to get over past relationships. A true encapsulation of who Wise is, the release is some of his strongest work to date. He shares, “I've discovered the importance of calling myself an artist and working to be that. An artist is someone who takes in the world around them, processes it and creates their interpretation and understanding of themselves, others and the world they live in through their form of expression. That's what I love most about music and why I make music: to share with others how I see and process things.”

We had the pleasure of interviewing Bruno Major over Zoom video! The antihero of music stardom, Bruno has been completely uncompromising in his craft, creating unrivaled lyrical landscapes that don't conform to the musical status quo of today, but still deeply resonate with fans, as evidenced by his billion-stream career, propelled by viral hits the RIAA Gold-certified “Nothing” and the RIAA Platinum-certified “Easily.”Dubbed as “one to watch” (Billboard) Bruno returns with “We Were Never Really Friends” – his first release since his last album To Let a Good Thing Die in 2020. The track opens as a gentle piano ballad, nothing more than his plaintive vocals and the instrument—and then the drums come in and the song explodes open as he sings of the heartfelt blurring of friendship and romance and its inevitable messy aftermath. It's a classic rock song, in the vein of McCartney and Lennon (complete with guitar solo), and it's studded with eye-catching details and frank emotions, like a crashed Mercedes and an unreturned plea to come home. Bruno splices classic singer-songwriter confessionals with sleek modern electronic production, girding the entire enterprise with hints of soul. His dedication to sincerity and immediacy in his craft solidified via his 2017 debut record A Song For Every Moon. Recorded and released independently, the record gained powerful word-of-mouth momentum internationally and its 2020 follow-up, To Let a Good Thing Die was similarly far reaching, a beautifully crafted tapestry of stories of human relationships, love and heartbreak, and existential musings. “The Most Beautiful Thing,” emerged from a special co-writing session with producer and pop luminary FINNEAS. Across the two albums, Bruno has amassed over 1.5 billion collective streams to date. Also, marking a triumphant return to the stage after his 2020 tour was canceled due to COVID, Bruno Major will also soon embark on an expansive Asian, North American, and European headlining tour. MJ Cole on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 7/12/22 About MJ Cole - One of U.K. garage's first true stars, MJ Cole's work has spanned Mercury Prize-nominated albums and a lengthy career as a remixer and producer. His widely praised 2000 debut Sincere was a landmark release for the genre, taking the pirate radio-bred sound aboveground by emphasizing its soul and R&B influences. Following 2003's Cut to the Chase, a guest-heavy set that touched on U.K. hip-hop and ragga, Cole remained busy remixing artists like Mariah Carey and Amy Winehouse, collaborating with artists ranging from Dizzee Rascal to Bruno Mars, and continually exploring rhythms with his solo EPs and singles. He returned to his classical roots with 2020's MJ Cole Presents Madrugada. While growing up in London, Cole studied the oboe and piano, ultimately earning a degree in music from City University. He also immersed himself in electronic music culture, working as a tape operator and engineer for the drum'n'bass label SOUR. Cole issued a breakbeat single as Morf in 1995. While working on Ramsey & Fen's 2-step remixes for Kym Mazelle in 1996, he caught the garage bug and worked on numerous productions as well as remixes for Soul II Soul, Goldie, Gwen McRae, Another Level, and State of Mind. He started releasing garage singles under his own name in 1997, and a few as Box Clever, including one of the first releases on Prolific Recordings, which he founded in 1998. Cole's song "Sincere," recorded using a sampler and Atari, was released via AM:PM the same year, and was one of the first Top 40-charting garage singles. Soon after, Cole signed to Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label, which released the "Crazy Love" single in May 2000 and the full-length Sincere that July. The album's quick, crisp production style earned him a Brit Award nomination as well as a Mercury Prize nomination. Cole released another album, 2003's Cut to the Chase with Talkin' Loud, before leaving the label in 2004. That year, he began releasing a steady stream of singles and EPs on Prolific, issuing collaborations with Tubby T, Wiley, and Elisabeth Troy (who had previously sung on "Crazy Love"). During this time, he remixed artists such as Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, and Mariah Carey, took his DJ set on the road, and composed music for television ad campaigns. His own Riddim EP appeared in 2010. Over the next several years, he co-wrote songs with Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith, remixed tracks by Jess Glynne and Adam F, and produced tracks for Dizzee Rascal and Katy B while also finding time to release his own music on the Panoramic EP. Lobster Boy Records issued the single "Alcatraz" in 2016. The following year, he returned with "Shelter" featuring Bruno Major, the DJ Zinc collaboration "Interbass," and the solo single "Pictures in My Head." The material kept on coming in 2018 with the Kojey Radical collaboration "Soak It Up," the Foundations EP, and "Waking Up" featuring Freya Ridings. 2020 saw Cole release his first album in 17 years, one he had always wanted to make. Inspired by his early classical background, Presents Madrugada, released on Decca, was an instrumental album of piano and strings with a soaring, transcendent, filmic quality. In 2021, Cole collaborated with Rudimental and Josh Barry on the single "Remember Their Names." ~ Heather Phares & Paul Simpson About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. When jazz trumpeter Chet Baker began to sing on his records, his voice received a polarizing response, to put it lightly. At first, critics despised his light and dreamy voice paired with minimal accompaniment. However, audiences loved it, and Chet became a household name. This album, Embraceable You, was recorded in the middle of his success, but wasn't released until 1995, about 40 years after the recording. The label thought it was "too depressing" to put out and is often forgotten about in Chet's enormous discography.Singer/songwriter Bruno Major joins us from London to talk about this long lost album, Chet's signature voice and delivery, and bringing Baker's tunes to a new audience.More on Bruno MajorOld Soul music videoCheck out Bruno's new album To Let A Good Thing DieBruno's version of Like Someone In Love live in JakartaMore on Chet BakerLet's Get Lost, the documentary on Chet BakerBorn To Be Blue: Chet Baker In 5 Songs (NPR)Time After Time: The Lasting Legacy Of Chet Baker (uDiscover Music)Show Tracklisting (all songs from Embraceable You unless otherwise indicated):On Green Dolphin StreetSarah Vaughan: Embraceable YouNat King Cole: Embraceable YouBillie Holiday: Embraceable YouEmbraceable YouOn Green Dolphin StreetBruno Major: Old SoulChet Baker: My Funny ValentineChet Baker: Come All Ye FaithfulThe Night We Called It A DayChet Baker: You Make Me Feel So YoungLittle Girl BlueCome Rain Or Come ShineLittle Girl BlueBruno Major: Old FashionedChet Baker: I'm Old FashionedThere's A Lull In My LifeHow Long Has This Been Going OnSarah Vaughan: How Long Has This Been Going OnForgetfulThe Night We Called It A DayThere's A Lull In My LifeBruno Major: Like Someone In LoveEmbraceable YouThe Night We Called It A DayEmbraceable YouChet Baker: My IdealJoão Gilberto: UndiúAntônio Carlos Jobim: OvertureHere is the Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find on thereIf you’re not already subscribed to Heat Rocks in Apple Podcasts, do it here!

Beth McCord from Your Enneagram Coach joins us to discuss the Enneagram and how it can enhance our walk with the Lord. She explains how our core motivations are fulfilled only with Jesus Christ and clarifies misconceptions about the Enneagram. It was so great to talk with Beth and glean from her knowledge of the different personality types and how they interact. A little bit about the guest: Enneagram author, speaker, and coach Beth McCord is the founder and lead content creator of Your Enneagram Coach, a community designed to be a safe place for individuals to explore the Enneagram. With years of experience and a passion for coming alongside individuals, couples, and groups, Beth is leading the way in simplifying the deep truths of the Enneagram from a Biblical perspective. Her mission is to make personal awareness and growth accessible for everyone, anywhere, so they can experience health and transformation in every area of their lives. Resources: Your Enneagram Coach Becoming Us by Beth & Jeff McCord Discovering You The Enneagram Collection by Beth McCord Exploring You Beth is reading The Soul of Shame by Kurt Thompson. She’s listening to Bruno Major and watching Secrets of the Zoo. What’s Refreshing: She’s enjoyed a season of rest balance after a big year of releasing various books and courses. Noteworthy quotes: “What we want to recognize is to give ourselves a lot of grace and compassion.” - 29:36 “First and foremost our identity is in Christ and what he says about us.” - 36:29 “Put your hope in Christ. The work is finished; it’s all OK.” - 39:35 Questions for consideration: Whether you know your enneagram type or not, which of the core motivations (fear, desire, weakness, longing) tend to motivate you? What steps can you take to reorient your motivations toward Christ? How can you be aware when you’re ‘travelling off course’ (i.e. becoming an unhealthy version of you) and what reminders can you put in place to realign yourself with the gospel’s truth? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/emma-koch/support
Kicking off Season 5, at 22-years-old, this multi-talented guest has already become a buzzing and sought-after producer, songwriter and artist. Working behind the scenes on numerous hit singles, he has stepped out into the spotlight with his own innovative and ambitious solo project. Born and raised in East Los Angeles, he was homeschooled alongside his younger sister, Billie Eilish. Music was always an important part of their childhood and education and by the age of eleven, his parents had taught him the guitar and piano. He took to writing his own songs and by the time he was a teenager, he was already teaching himself to produce. In 2015 he wrote a song titled “Ocean Eyes” in his bedroom studio. That song became the breakout hit for Billie Eilish, quickly grabbing her a record deal with Interscope and gaining major media buzz. The siblings continued to write and record together for Billie’s solo project, creating her debut EP ‘don’t smile at me’ and No. 1 debut album, ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’. He has also had the opportunity to collaborate with artists including Khalid, Kehlani, Jessie Reyez, Ashe, Olivia O'Brien, Sabrina Claudio, Marian Hill, Bruno Major. Already regarded as a major producer and songwriter to watch, as an artist his anticipated debut EP, ‘Blood Harmony,’ is set to be released this October featuring the first single, “Shelter.” Unafraid to be vulnerable and unfiltered, his songs are rich with pure unadulterated emotion. Emily Elbert, American Singer-Songwriter and GuitaristHear more shows like this at https://entertalkradio.com/makingit http://www.emilyelbert.com/We Who Believe in Freedom, the fifth album from Emily Elbert, provides both a thoughtful meditation on the status quo and heartening call-to-action for our inner activist. In a merging of groove-laden soul and introspective folk styles, Elbert shares her reflections on today’s political climate, and also brings a new light to the work of revolutionary artists like Marvin Gaye and Pete Seeger. In intimate, stripped recordings, Elbert’s voice and guitar work serve as clear channels for messages of peace and justice, as relevant now as ever before. In 2018, L.A. Weekly named Emily among the “Best of L.A. Music”, noting that “Elbert would be considered remarkable just for her guitar playing, which segues from hard-edged funk and blues to subtle jazz intricacy. But she’s an equally adept vocalist, weaving her soulful phrasing nimbly within the rhythms of her guitar chords.” In addition to her solo work, Emily has contributed her voice and guitar to projects by Esperanza Spalding, Dweezil Zappa, and Phish’s Mike Gordon, and co-wrote Bruno Major's viral hit “Easily.” On tour, she has opened for artists like G. Love & Special Sauce, Emily King, Leon Russell, and Richie Havens, and played 1200+ independent shows in 30 countries around the world. In the opening song on her new album, Elbert beckons to listeners, “hold on for the healing, family / all voices needed / to speak up and to listen, to act on intention / we’ve got work to do.” This album is an expression of her own work, a true prayer for peace and justice - in turn, providing a soundtrack for progress to come. We Who Believe in Freedom was released on all platforms in October 2018.
