Most of us want to be in good shape and improve our health span, not just our life span. In this episode, Angela talks to dietician and science educator, Holly Baxter, about the most effective ways in which you can get lean, achieve optimal health levels, and remain vibrantly full of energy in a way that is the most beneficial for your body and mind, and why excessive cardio might actually be holding you back. KEY TAKEAWAYS If we engage in cardio too regularly, and carry a calorie deficit, it can negatively impact the energy available for muscle recovery when we need it most. The best way to increase lean body mass and reduce body fat is through incorporating a high protein diet and moderating caloric intake. The latest research into fat loss seems to suggest that there are few advantages in diets that are high in carbohydrates and low in fat vs diets that are high in fat and low in carbohydrates. Everyone is unique and has a bespoke set of requirements. The best coach or mentor will always prescribe an approach based on the individual's needs, and not a one-size-fits-all programme, as these rarely work. BEST MOMENTS 'I definitely had a strong focus on how to optimise my physique for performance' 'It's important to recognise that everybody has a unique preference for different foods' 'What is going to govern the rate of weight loss is the degree of calorie deficit' 'You've got to learn about your client and meet them where they are at' VALUABLE RESOURCES Take My Biohacking Quiz and Get A Free Personalised Report - www.yourtotalhealthcheck.comBecome an Insider of The Female Biohacker Collective and have Angela as Your Health Coach in Your Pocket - www.femalebiohacker.comFree Fasting Guide - www.angelafosterperformance.com/fastingPodcast Shownotes - www.angelafosterperformance.com/podcasts Thanks to our Sponsor: Bon Charge - Get 20% off at www.boncharge.com/Angela ABOUT THE GUEST Holly Baxter is a Dietitian and Science Educator that has been involved in the health and fitness industry for some 13 + years, where much of this time has been dedicated to providing her clients and followers around the world, with evidenced-based education, and to putting up the good fight against the many misconceptions surrounding food, nutrition, and exercise. In 2011, Holly graduated Deakin University as a Food Scientist and Nutritionist and went on to complete her Master of Dietetics in 2013, and now practices as a Clinical Dietitian and Online Science Educator. Holly's heavy involvement in sports in early life, coupled with her passion for health and nutrition, has led her to extend her skill set as a coach, on to becoming a well known author, speaker and one of the leading females in the Nutrition and Fitness industry. Holly has, and continues to participate in the sport of bodybuilding as a professional physique athlete, claiming x2 World Championship-level wins in the Natural Fitness Division. She is also the co-founder and director of a number of health and fitness related businesses, including the renowned nutrition coaching app Carbon Diet Coach, and subscription based services, The Workout Builder, her online exercise program platform and REPs, abbreviated as Research Explained in Practical Summaries, which takes complex research and simplifies it for the average person to understand and apply. From 2016 through 2022, Holly also helped scale her former nutrition coaching company Team Biolayne, and evidence-based supplement line Outwork Nutrition, along side former husband Dr. Layne Norton. She has more recently launched her own all female coaching business venture, Holly Baxter LLC, which focuses exclusively on the unique health related needs of women, and mission to become the global leaders in the dissemination of science based health education, specifically those of females. “Womens Health and fitness is where my true passion lies! As a Clinical Dietitian and Coach, with first hand experience in the field as a professional athlete, it is my goal to empower my clients to achieve ultimate success through their commitment and dedication to a life of knowledge and learning." Comparison has often been called “the thief of joy” and I agree with that statement. Comparing yourself to a professional athlete probably isn't going to get you very far, in fact, it might take you several steps back. The healthiest comparison to make is to where you were the day before. You can do that by tracking and recording your workouts and seeing the progress you have made. Personally, I use an app called “Beyond the Whiteboard” that helps me keep track of all my workouts and the Carbon Diet Coach for my food intake. Learn more about your ad choices. Perhaps you've lost some or all of this weight several times in the last 25 years. The times you've tried dieting have been awful. You were constantly hungry, you were cranky, and a few weeks into it your sleep started to deteriorate, only making matters worse. You started to despise the treadmill. But you stuck with it through sheer determination and willpower. And you lost the weight and finally got to return to some sense of normalcy. But a year later you are right back where you started. And perhaps you start the cycle all over again. You feel frustrated and defeated, perhaps you've internalized your failure to permanently lose this excess weight as your personal failure. But you've decided that this time is going to be different. New year, new you. Instead of following a diet you found online, or one that a friend suggested, you've hired a nutrition coach. And this nutrition coach isn't cheap, but they have a great reputation and track record of helping people achieve long-term sustainable weight loss. And three months into this program you've been dieting and keeping up with your exercise. Nothing crazy, you're a bit hungry some days, but it's manageable. Your workouts are three weight training sessions a week, as well as one cardio session a week, and on the other days you've gotten in the habit of going on long walks with your dog. You feel great, and you realize that you're halfway to your 30-pound weight loss goal. But then on your next check in call you coach tells you that they want you to stop dieting. In fact, they are going to increase the amount of food that you eat each day. Wait… what? Increase the amount you eat each day? But… won't that cause you to gain weight. Your coach informs you that yes, you'll likely see some weight gain, but just a little. And now you're thinking hold on… I'm paying my coach to help me lose weight – not gain it back. What's the deal here? I was doing so good. I'm halfway to my goal. Why in the world would I want to backtrack now? Your coach patiently explains that you're moving into a reverse dieting phase tat will las for the next 15 weeks. And you're thinking to yourself – reverse dieting – what is this BS? I'm here to lose weight – not gain it back!I've wanted to do an episode on reverse diets for a while now – what they are and why you might consider them. And one of the foremost experts on this subject is Holly Baxter. Holly is a 2x Natural World Champion Fitness Model and has a Master's degree in Dietetics, is an Accredited Dietician, is a fitness educator, and along with her husband Layne Norton were early pioneers in field of reverse dieting - and they even wrote the definitive book on the subject titled The Complete Reverse Dieting Guide.Join us this week as Holly shares her personal fitness story and her thoughts on the healthiest, most effective way to achieve long-term sustainable healthy weight loss. In this episode she breaks down the importance of a healthy metabolism for fat loss and explains what reverse dieting is, why you might want to consider it, and exactly how it's done.Connect with Holly:Website - https://hbnutrition.com.au/Instagram - @hollytbaxterYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw33382AK54Vd90P56EISigFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/hbnutrition.com.au/ Team BioLayne Website - https://www.biolayne.com/Team BioLayne Instagram - @biolayne Carbon Diet Coach - https://joincarbon.com/Carbon Diet Coach Instagram - @carbondietcoach Supplement Com

There are many myths that have been perpetuated about resistance training over the years including but not limited to: -Lifting makes you bulky -Lift light weights to be 'toned' -Lifting stunts your growth -Lifting makes you 'muscle bound' In this episode, Layne talks with Sal Di Stefano from Mind Pump. Sal began his fitness journey of lifting weights as a teenager and became a personal trainer at 18 years of age, then was promoted to general manager of a large gym by age 19, and started his own business at 22 by opening his own personal training studio. A veteran of 'in the trenches' hands-on personal training, Sal brings a practical element of resistance training knowledge with an ability to distill complex topics into engaging content. Layne and Sal rap about the many benefits of resistance training, the myths about it, and why almost everyone should be resistance training in some form. Dan Newmire is a professor at Texas A&M and has also competed as a successful bodybuilder, winning the superheavyweight class at 2012 NPC Junior USA Championships. Dan's research centers around the mechanisms behind hypertrophy and one of his specific areas of research is examining the utility of partial ranges of motion on hypertrophy compared to more conventional methods. He also is interested in the adaptations to resistance exercise and the effects of warm & cold immersion on recovery from resistance training. It is rare that a researcher such as Dan also has the same 'hardcore,' in-gym experience as many top bodybuilders. This gives him a unique perspective on what is useful for fat loss, muscle gain, and body composition. Don't miss this episode! Dr. Mark Haub is currently a professor at Kansas State University. He has a Bachelors in Psychology from Fort Hays State University, as well as a Masters in Exercise Science. He also holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Kansas. Dr. Haub has researched many interesting nutrition-related topics, such as sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate in sports performance, as well as high-fat diets vs high-carbohydrate diets in endurance athletes. The list goes on. For those of you that have been in the nutrition-evidence space for the past decade, you may recognize Dr. Haub from his 2010 claim to fame as the "Twinkie Diet Professor." This all came about during his teachings of energy balance at Kansas State University. Not only was Dr. Haub working a stressful job as a college professor, he was also a husband and father to a young toddler. At the time, he was the heaviest he had ever weighed in his life, so in an effort to lose weight, Dr. Haub undertook a 10-week weight loss diet to demonstrate to his students the concept of energy balance. To spice things up a little, in order to debunk the 2010 USA Nutrition Guidelines—which stated that all solid fats and refined carbohydrates were obesogenic—he included a range of processed foods high in refined sugars and saturated fats. Dr. Haub shares these findings with us today, along with a host of other interesting topics! Don't forget to leave us a review if you are enjoying these podcast episodes! In this episode, we speak with Dr. Ethan Weiss. Dr. Weiss is a cardiologist at UCSF and recently made headlines for a large intermittent fasting study that he was involved in called the 'TREAT Study.' The study was unique in terms of the number of participants, duration, and number of biomarkers examined in a TRF (time-restricted feeding) vs. non-TRF study. Dr. Weiss' hypothesis was that the TRF group would see better results than the non-TRF group over the 12-week study. He talks about how he believed this due to his background in using TRF for himself to lose weight and when the results came out that TRF was NOT superior in the TREAT study, he was surprised. In fact, the study suggested there may have been some negatives with the TRF group that has made Dr. Weiss re-think his position with regard to TRF. We talk about the results of the study, the limitations, and his interpretation of the data. We also discuss how the media has taken some of the results completely out of context. If you've been curious about TRF, this is an episode that will be sure to pique your curiosity. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Alan Levinovitz. Dr. Levinovitz is an associate professor of religious studies at James Madison University. His work looks into the relationship between religion, science, and literature. His best-selling book "Natural: How Faith in Nature's Goodness Leads to Harmful Fads, Unjust Laws, and Flawed Science" takes a deep dive into our obsession with what is 'natural' and questions the very fundamental understanding of what IS, in fact, natural. We discuss naturalism as it relates to nutritional fads, nutrition tribes, and the parallels between religion and nutrition tribalism. This isn't our typical episode, but we think you will have a much better understanding of WHY people can descend into cognitive dissonance and the dangers of groupthink after listening. In this episode, Layne and Holly discuss how they came to the concept of flexible dieting—the idea that you can eat 'whatever you want' so long as it fits within your protein, carbohydrate, and fat targets for the day. They talk about why they chose to eat this way, what they think is a good amount of 'flexibility,' and why they have found it to be the most sustainable way of eating for them. In this episode Layne and Holly sit down with gut microbiome expert, Professor Suzanne Devkota. Suzanne Devkota, PhD, is an assistant professor at UCLA as well as in the Cedars-Sinai Division of Gastroenterology investigating the role of diet in shaping the community of bacteria that live in our intestines (the "gut microbiome"). Her research into the effects of dietary fat on host-microbe interactions in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) led to some of the first mechanistic insights into why "modern" diseases such as IBD, diabetes and food allergies have rapidly increased over the past 50-100 years. Her ongoing research focuses on the role of sulfur-reducing bacteria on host immune responses and on counteractive nutritional therapies. Devkota teams with Cedars-Sinai physicians to combine clinical and basic research utilizing patient samples, in vivo conventional and gnotobiotic animal models, and sequencing- and culture-based microbial methodologies to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying clinical phenomena. Her goal is to add a powerful new dimension to diagnosis and treatment through a better understanding of gut microbial contributions to disease. Some of the topics we hit on in this episode include: -Her education and how she got into gut microbiome research sort of by accident -The effects of different dietary modifications on the gut microbiome -Why the microbiome is so important -Probiotics vs prebiotics -Artificial sweeteners & their effects on the gut microbiome -The limitations in the different types of studies -The importance of fiber & dietary fiber diversity -Intermittent fasting -Her opinion on "gut health" products -Her recommendations for nutrition overall for a healthy gut You can find Suzanne on Twitter @suzanne_devkota and at devkotalab.com Get our new nutrition coaching app, Carbon Diet Coach, for iOS and android to get custom nutrition coaching for less than $10/month: https://joincarbon.com Get our books on how to lose fat: https://www.biolaynestore.com Take my online course "The Science of Nutrition": https://cleanhealth.edu.au/product/science-of-nutrition Get custom workouts by us for $12.99/month: https://www.biolayne.com/members/workout-builder Find Layne and Holly on Instagram @biolayne and @hollytbaxter ---- Post-production by Jim McDonald (@thejimmcd) and David Margittai (inpostmedia.com) © 2020, Biolayne LLC.
