It would be difficult to overstate Stan Efferding's impact on the world of health, fitness and performance.Having reached the pinnacle of both bodybuilding and powerlifting - he is both a world record holding powerlifter and an IFBB professional bodybuilder - he is now one of the most highly sought after consultants to many of the world's most popular and successful athletes across an incredibly wide range of sports. Clients include four-time World's Strongest Man Brian Shaw, Icelandic strongman and Game of Thrones “The Mountain” Hafþór Björnsson, and WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin. As hard as it is to imagine now, Efferding was once considered too small for soccer, with a physique “like a number 2 pencil”. He began training at his coach's request to bulk up while on a soccer scholarship to the University of Oregon. The rest is history. From weighing just 98lbs (44kg or 7st) in high school, to 135lbs in college, to a peak of over 300lbs (140kg or 22st), and a strength or physique accolade to match every pound gained, Efferding translates his unique blend of 30 years of research and application into practical actionable tips, hard-won insights, and unforgettable phrases. In a wide-ranging conversation with Unfiltered's contributing editor Dr Jonny Rees, PhD, Efferding reveals his take on optimal training and nutrition for both muscle gain and fat loss. He also details the tried-and-tested principles that form the foundation of The Vertical Diet, his performance-based nutritional framework, how he successfully competed in both powerlifting and bodybuilding, and much more.In a health and fitness industry struggling from a plague of Instagram "experts' with few credentials and limited experience, Efferding is the cure we need. For exclusive access to all Unfiltered's video interviews, features and documentaries visit https://unfilteredonline.com/Get in touch in the comments below or talk to us on:Email: editorial@unfilteredonline.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGSV7XVaBYUYq5YidLI12owInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unfiltered.extraTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/UnfilteredExtra

Welcome to a powerful and inspirational interview with Stephen Williams, a thriving strength coach who has combated the debilitating symptoms of Crohn's and IBS through the Carnivore diet. Born amidst tumultuous circumstances and a checkered past, Stephen has risen above the hurdles, transforming his life through resilience and strength.A troubled teenager, expelled from school at 15, he squandered his youth and resources on reckless behavior and substance abuse. From indulging in alcohol, cocaine, and a flamboyant party lifestyle, Stephen's journey took a significant turn in 2000 when he began experiencing severe gut troubles.Working as door security in Newcastle while battling health issues, Stephen was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's. He was told there was no cure. But he wasn't willing to accept that fate.In his quest for health, Stephen pursued various diets with minimal success and dug deep into books, expanding his knowledge on holistic and nutritional sciences. He educated himself on various diets, like the Metabolic diet, Weston Price's principles, and The Specific Carbohydrate Diet developed by Dr. Sidney Haas.Drawing inspiration from several thought leaders and experts in fitness and health, including Stan "The Rhino" Efferding, creator of the Vertical Diet, Aajonus Vonderplanitz, author of "We Want to Live," and strength coaches like Charles R. Poliquin and Louie Simmons, Stephen started to see light at the end of the tunnel.Having followed the Carnivore diet for three years now, Stephen's life is a testament to resilience, the power of knowledge, and the undeniable connection between diet and health.Connect with Stephen and learn more about his inspiring journey on www.instagram.com/radicalstrengthcoach. Let's be honest - leaning out and losing weight OR bulking up and gaining weight are real challenges...and often, the biggest hurdle is nutrition. This is why I wanted to bring on the man, the myth, the legend himself, Stan Efferding, so he can break down his vertical diet and share what it is, how it works, why he made it, and some of the common pitfalls. The two of us dive into the essentials for building a sufficient micronutrient base and what you may be sacrificing when you eliminate certain food groups. We then unpack food allergies and tolerances and the importance in making recommendations based on the individual, not the population. The conversation is steered to the many challenges for getting in enough protein in your diet (eating out at restaurants being a huge factor) and ways to overcome these obstacles. There are countless dangers behind dirty bulking and over-restricting diets, so listen in as Stan unpacks his simple, yet elegant, vertical diet that can be suitable for those wanting to lose weight, those wanting to gain weight, and everything in between. What You'll Learn in this Episode: [00:47] Intro to Stan Efferding [02:31] What kicked off Stan's interest in this weight loss, muscle gain and cardio metabolic health world [05:04] The insanity behind dirty bulking and over-restricting diets [05:44] The simple and elegant plan behind the vertical diet [08:27] Essentials for building a sufficient micronutrient base [13:10] What you are sacrificing when you eliminate essential food groups [16:50] Stan's biggest lessons learned utilizing the vertical diet [17:52] The recommended amount of protein you should be getting in your diet [21:16] Why it's harder to build and retain muscle in a calorie deficit [21:48] An explanation for why the low-FODMAP diet is one of the most studied and prescribed diets [32:03] Why vegetable oils were introduced in diets [34:11] Making recommendations based on the individual and not across the population [36:53] Strategies for maintaining your blood sugar levels [43:25] The struggle with getting in enough protein, especially when eating out [50:45] Where to find Stan Efferding Links: Explore our free training samples here: https://www.rebel-performance.com/training-templates/ (https://www.rebel-performance.com/training-templates/) Follow James Cerbie on IG here: https://www.instagram.com/jamescerbie/ (https://www.instagram.com/jamescerbie/) Follow Stan Efferding on IG here: https://www.instagram.com/stanefferding/ (https://www.instagram.com/stanefferding/) Check out Stan's website and vertical diet here: https://stanefferding.com/ (https://stanefferding.com/) Take a look at Stan's YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/stanefferding?app=desktop (https://www.youtube.com/user/stanefferding?app=desktop) Want to learn more about the Rebel Performance Training Team? Our guest this week is Mark Bell. Our partner this week is STRONG Coffee - save 15% on every purchase with the code ESSENTIAL! A portion of every purchase helps support this show.REMEMBER - if you are enjoying this podcast, be sure you're subscribed, and that you're sharing these episodes with your friends and family who would appreciate what we're talking about on a week to week basis!HIGHLIGHTS - Mark is back for his second appearance on The Essential Strength Podcast, and today we are talking all about DIETS. For anyone who follow's mark on social media, you know that he is ALWAYS pursuing some sort of dietary goal and experimenting with different diet principles and approaches to goal-oriented nutrition. In today's conversation, Mark pulls back the curtain on all the things he's learned from the last 18 months of dieting in one form or another, and provides some incredible take-home messages for anyone committed to living a stronger, healthier life.Connect with Mark: @marksmellybellListen to Mark's Podcast: Mark Bell's Power ProjectConnect with David: @dr.davidskolnik.dptConnect with The Show: @essential.strength.podcastACTION PLAN - Your action plan this week, and perhaps for the next few months, is to pick a dietary framework, commit to it and learn from the experience. That could mean you try intermittent fasting, eating Paleo, investing in the Vertical Diet… as you learned today it's not a matter of figuring out the ONE DIET TO RULE THEM ALL, it's about picking something and sticking too it, and then moving on to something else and sticking to that, rinse, repeat and figure out what works best for you - the current version of you with your current goals and lifestyle. And if that feels a bit too nebulous well - maybe you can start by subscribing to Mark's PROTEIN MANDATE and prioritizing 0.8-1 grams of protein per pound of body weight every single day, as many days as you can for as many weeks and months as you can. You'll end up with a daily food intake that looks pretty similar to some of these “named” diets just by subscribing to a high protein intake. That's it for this week, be sure to tune in next time for my conversation with Dr. Kristin Phillips about all things pelvic floor, pelvic health and why “more keggles” is not the answer to your problems.Until then - we wish you STRENGTH and GOOD HEALTH.

In this episode Amanda and Jupe discuss the vertical diet. This diet was created by Stan efferding a bodybuilder turned power lifter who wanted to create a diet for high level performance. Also on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rqy8YBtKuc In this video we discuss note and wrap up our weight loss journey. We discuss how (and why) we changed our family diet to help Seth lose weight. We settled on a mix of a Keto/Paleo diet that is low carb and definitely low sugar. Seth lost approximately 58 pounds (and 4 inches of waist) as he trimmed down from 213 lbs to 155 lbs. Seth has started transitioning to the vertical diet so he can incorporate certain carbs to help support his daily work out regimen. A few of our favorite resources that we enjoyed studying to help us select and make sense of the different diets out there. Tom Bilyeu and his “Impact Theory” Podcast. Peter Attia and his “The Drive” Podcast. Dom D'agostino who is a leading researcher on the effects of a ketogenic (keto) diet. Stan Efferding and the Vertical Diet that he uses to train world class athletes (and also regular people like us!)
