As the sun set slowly on the British Empire in the years after the Second World War, the nation's stately homes were in crisis. Tottering under the weight of rising taxes and a growing sense that they had no place in twentieth-century Britain, hundreds of ancestral piles were dismantled and demolished. Yet - perhaps surprisingly - many of these great houses survived, as dukes and duchesses clung desperately to their ancestral seats and tenants' balls gave way to rock concerts, safari parks and day trippers. From the Rolling Stones rocking Longleat to Christine Keeler rocking Cliveden, Noble Ambitions: The Fall and Rise of the Post-War Country House (Basic Books, 2021) by Dr. Adrian Tinniswood takes us on a lively tour of these crumbling halls of power. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Robert Thompson MBE is one of the youngest chefs in the UK to receive a Michelin star and has helped put the Isle of Wight on the culinary map. At ten, he became interested in food, designing his own restaurant/club as part of a school project. He has worked at several top rated restaurants, from Winteringham Fields to Cliveden, before establishing Thompson's on the Isle of Wight. He was one of the first chefs to work with us at Great British Chefs and cooked a memorable lamb carpaccio at our press launch event and a smoked eel puff in Old Street (London) the day we launched the website. During lockdown, he re-invented his business with a chef-designed food box called You Be Chef, which he continues to run.  In his chat with Ollie Lloyd, he discusses the changing nature of food on the Isle and how people's expectations have changed due to various factors, such as Instagram, home cooking trends, supermarkets expanding ranges, and the cost of living crisis. Making things work in the hospitality sector is not easy, but Robert is committed to making it work. He is incentivising his team so that they are part owners of the business, is about to launch two new restaurants and remains dedicated to working with a growing list of local suppliers.  Edited by Jasper Schofield

Growing up around farms and wildlife, TV presenter Kate Humble has always had a fascination for nature. After leaving school, she travelled solo to Africa; working her way from Cape Town to Cairo. On her return to the UK she began working for TV production companies, as a runner, then researcher on ‘The Holiday Programme'. It was on her second day in the Holiday office when she was asked by the programme's editor if she had ever presented before. "No," she said "and nor do I want to." Kate has been presenting programmes for over 20 years ever since, as well as writing articles and books, many with a focus around travel. In fact, she has become a beloved mainstay of British television, having presented some of our most iconic shows, including Springwatch & Autumnwatch, Countryfile, Lambing Live, and many, many more. We spoke at The Chelsea Townhouse, a new opening by Iconic Luxury Hotels, the brand behind some of Britain's most legendary properties, like Chewton Glen and Cliveden. Tucked behind one of London's most fancy shopping districts, Sloane Street, we sat in one of its homely suites, overlooking it's lovely garden and towering treetops - an unusual find in the heart of London.Kate is what I would consider a true traveller. She is someone who sets off with pure wanderlust, with a map and hiking boots, and gets stuck in wherever she is heading. She tells us about an extraordinary five weeks spent with a tribe who live north of Timbuktu in the Sahara Desert trading salt; tracking clouded leopards in Borneo and hiking through Afghanistan. And closer to home about life in the Welsh Wye Valley, and her beloved escape in rural France. Destination Recap:Wye Valley, UKCorfuGuatemalaMexicoSouth AfricaCameroonTimbuktu, Mali Saharan Desert, MaliLimousin National Park, France BorneoTsingy de Bemaraha National Park, Madagascar Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan Siberia, RussiaWalking across JapanGlyndŵr's Way, WalesPolandRomaniaAlbania Kate has a new book out, called Where the Hearth Is: Stories of Home, which interestingly is all about home, questioning the notion of home, is it a tangible place or a state of mind? And considers the views of others living uniquely, extraordinarily and happily. It's a fascinating and comforting read, which I thoroughly recommend - a great Christmas present. Nestled amongst 370 acres of gardens and grounds is the grandeur of the historic Cliveden House. Originally built in 1666 by the Duke of Buckingham, the last owner was William Waldorf Astor who rebuilt the estate to what it is today. The National Trust is the owner of Cliveden House which is now a breathtaking luxury five star hotel. Recently, I booked an overnight stay at Cliveden House through American Express Travel's Fine Hotels and Resorts.  The benefits included a free breakfast and free upgrade. I was traveling with my friend, May Wong from graduate school and her dog, George. The hotel graciously welcomes pets. (Please refer to the pet policy guidelines). Cliveden House is a culinary delight. The Lady Astor Afternoon Tea was indeed a delicious highlight. Overlooking the expansive gardens, tea is served in true English fashion. The signature drink 66 served in the wood-paneled Library Bar is an homage 1666, the year in which the Duke of Buckingham built Cliveden House. There are several Michelin starred restaurants in the area, and the concierge is happy to help arrange reservations. Charity begins in the kitchen. In the Cliveden House gift shop, a copy of the Chefs at Home cookbook is available for purchase, and a portion of proceeds benefit the wonderful non-profit Hospitality Action. Autumn is the time for literary festivals, including the mighty 10-day Cheltenham Literature Festival, London's South Bank, the small but beautifully formed Cliveden and many more including Bridport, Petworth, Stratford, Henley, Harrogate, North Cornwall, Braemar and more. But this week we're going to war-torn Ukraine to feature the Lviv Book Forum, in collaboration with Hay Festival, which runs in a bomb shelter between 6th and 9th October. We talk to the courageous and undaunted Programme Director, Sofiya Chelyak, and to the human rights KC, Philippe Sands, celebrated author of East West Street, The Ratline and a new book The Last Colony. Philippe will be attending the extraordinary festival alongside Henry Marsh, Misha Glenny, Margaret Atwood, Yuval Noah Harari, Elif Shafak and Margaret MacMillan. It's actually the 29th edition of the Lviv Book Forum, Ukraine's biggest literary festival, but given the war it's had to be shrunk and with Hay's support, it's defiantly going ahead with just 40 writers. As its digital partner for the first time, Hay will broadcast the conversations free in English, Ukrainian, and Spanish. Sofiya describes the festival as running ‘in defiance of the evil that seeks to squash their freedom,' and so we applaud and admire its efforts to keep these vital conversations alive and deepen our understanding of this little-known, vast and complex country.

Charles Lindbergh was not the first to fly across the Atlantic, non-stop--two British officers, largely lost to history did it eight years before. Robert Harder tells the story of Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown, who made it from St.  Johns, Newfoundland to Cliveden, Ireland on June 14-15, 1919. At a time when aviation was beginning to capture the public's imagination, and technological advances allowed for records to be broken in quick succession, Alcock and Brown undertook the dangerous passage. Flying a wood and fabric Vickers Vimy, with minimal instruments and difficult to control, Harder chronicles the adventure, and gives Alcock and Brown their place in history back with "First Crossing." A freelance writer, Robert O. Harder served in the US Air Force Strategic Air Command during the Cold War years, a B-52D air crewman who flew 145 combat missions during the Vietnam War. Rated as a Navigator and Radar Bombardier, Harder flew nuclear training sorties and also stood Pad Alert. He later became a commercial pilot and flight instructor. His other books include "Flying from the Black Hole: The B-52 Navigator Bombardiers of Vietnam" and "The Three Musketeers of the Army Air Forces." He lives in Chicago.

It's sixty years since the house party at Cliveden where Christine Keeler encountered Minister of War, John Profumo and the Soviet Naval attaché, Yevgeny Ivanov. The events of that weekend, a heady mix of sex, politics and espionage have filled newspapers, books, films and TV dramas. But that weekend was just one in a long line of intrigue and scandal at Cliveden. In fiction and reality, a weekend in the country has often involved far more than a simple retreat - from the appeasement talks imagined in Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day to a formal invitation from the Prime Minister to Chequers. Anne McElvoy explores the social history of the grand country house gathering and its hold on the English imagination. Julie Gottlieb is Professor of Modern History at the University of Sheffield and the author of ‘Guilty Women', Foreign Policy, and Appeasement in Inter-War Britain and Feminine Fascism: Women in Britain's Fascist Movement, 1923-1945 Natalie Livingstone is a journalist and historian and the author of The Mistresses of Cliveden: Three Centuries of Scandal, Power and Intrigue. I love the challenges of operating hotels... well, even if I don’t necessarily love them, because it’s really hard, I do at least find them utterly fascinating.  We’ve not been to a hotel for a while, but I so enjoyed chatting to Gareth Banner from The Ned a fair few episodes ago, I thought it was time to return.  This time, instead of one super huge hotel in the city, we’re taking a look at a few stunning properties spread over a somewhat larger area.  And If you want examples of how hotels can evolve with the times, and bring in new types of guests, without alienating their traditional following, this is the episode for you.      Andrew Stembridge is Executive Director of Iconic Luxury Hotels. They are a small and impressive collection, including The Lygon Arms, a coaching inn that dates back to the 1600s; Cliveden House, a stately home and Chewton Glen, an 18th Century manor house which has enjoyed half a century of award-winning 5 star-hospitality.   As you’ll hear, Chewton Glen has led the way over the decades. It was one of the first hotels in the country to open a spa, in 1990. Under Andrew’s leadership, it has also become very family-friendly, with wonderful tree house lodges (more on those in a moment), the Beehive Kids’ Club, and classes at the hotel’s cookery school, The Kitchen.   And by hosting Chris Evans’ Children in Need events, it's broadened its fanbase even more, and helped to raise millions of pounds along the way.  So how do you introduce so much change, and still maintain the historical spirit  of a place?  Keep listening, and you’ll find out.

And why do so many in the media want to bury the truth? This installment deals primarily with what my research has led me to believe was the actual subversion of the United States in the 20th century, by a vast network of internationalist and collectivist revolutionaries, tracing its roots to late-19th century British academia. Today, this subversion is often referenced with the nebulous term, New World Order.
