Traci Beller was thirteen when her father disappeared in the sleepy town of Rancha, not far from Los Angeles. The evidence says Tommy Beller abandoned his family, but Traci never believed it. The police couldn't find her dad and neither could the detectives hired by her mother, but now, ten years later, Traci is a super-popular influencer with millions of followers and the money to hire the best detective she can find: Elvis Cole.   A ten-years-cold missing person case is almost always a loser, but Elvis heads to Rancha where an ex-con named Sadie Givens and her daughter, Anya, might have a line on the missing man.  But when Elvis finds himself shadowed by a gang of brutal criminals, what began as a simple missing persons case becomes far more sinister, and Elvis calls in his ex-Marine, ex-cop friend, Joe Pike, to even the odds.   As Elvis and Joe follow Tommy Beller's trail into the depths of a monstrous, hidden evil, the case flips on its head.  Victims become predators, predators become prey, and when everyone is a victim, can Elvis Cole save them all?  The truth must come out no matter the cost, so Elvis must face the big empty to see justice done.   ABOUT THE AUTHOR Robert Crais is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of twenty-four novels, twenty of them featuring private investigator Elvis Cole and his enigmatic partner, Joe Pike. Carol Offen and Betsy Crais know all too well the exhilaration, separately, of being a living donor and a 2-time organ recipient.Carol's adult, college-age son was in need of a kidney. Carol became his donor. Betsy Crais's evaluation for gastric problems in her thirties revealed polycystic kidney disease. When she was in her fifties she became the grateful recipient of a kidney donation from a living donor. Many years later, she required a 2nd kidney and, to everyone's surprise, a liver. Again a living donor stepped up to donate a kidney but because she needed a liver at the same time, she needed a deceased donor. Not receiving them would have committed her to dialysis indefinitely while also risking death from liver failure. These two expressive women knew each other since their daughters childhoods. They came together again after their own kidney experiences when they decided to collaborate on authoring a book that would lay bare the plight of recipients and the path of becoming a living donor."There is a 6-8 yr. wait for a deceased kidney donor and 90,000 people on the waiting list."CONNECT WITH CAROL & BETSY:Carol: carol.kidneydonorhelp@gmail.com; her website: www.kidneydonorhelp.comBetsy: bcrais@med.unc.eduBook: The Insider's Guide to Living Kidney Donation: Everything You Need to Know If You Give (or Get) the Greatest Gift

The films of Robert Kramer blend fiction and documentary modes to engage with, and expand on, traditions of militant political cinema and subjective essay filmmaking. A founding member of the New Left activist film collective Newsreel in 1967, Kramer devoted himself to the group's radical ethos, but he also began to make his own hermetic and probing fiction films—like The Edge (1967) and Ice (1969)—which turned the camera back onto the mostly white middle-class milieu of his comrades, posing thorny questions about the nature of political commitment. This process reached its peak with the sprawling, 3-hour plus Milestones (1975, co-directed with John Douglas), a vast mosaic featuring a cast of over 50 fellow travelers, union organizers, dropouts, Free Vermont commune dwellers, and more, all navigating the demands of their personal and political lives in the wake of the Vietnam War. At the end of '70s, Kramer decamped to France, where his films had been championed by critics like Serge Daney, and proceeded to work in a wide variety of contexts across Europe and beyond, making films like Guns (1980), Our Nazi (1984), Doc's Kingdom (1988), Route One/USA (1989), and Walk the Walk (1996).  Over the past several years, the French DVD company Re:Voir has been beautifully restoring and re-releasing his films, and Kramer, who passed away suddenly in 1999, is currently the subject of a major retrospective at the Viennale, running through the end of November. The retrospective is accompanied by a new book, Starting Places, published by the Austrian Film Museum, which reproduces a 1997 interview with Kramer by the French critic Bernard Eisenchitz alongside several essays written by Kramer himself. To mark the occasion, Film Comment's Clinton Krute and Michael Blair invited Erika Balsom and Benjamin Crais, two noted critics who each proudly own original Milestones posters, to discuss Kramer's life and work. A few short audio clips of Kramer talking about his films, sourced from the original 1997 interview tapes, are interspersed throughout the conversation, providing their own points of departure into this undersung filmmaker's richly heterogenous, and endlessly fascinating, body of work.   Special thanks to Volker Pantenburg.

Meanwhile the crew is mentally cleansed by the aforementioned Nebari and have to snap out of it if they’re going to get away. It’s like totally bitchin’, man. Far out. Eric Scott and Jason Johnson.

MACRAISYLORING. This is a big, thick episode. In the first segment, Kayley talks to her very entertaining good friends—co-author Connor Crais and co-narrator Mackenzie Cartwright. They talk about all kinds of things. Connor and Mackenzie answer fan questions, they all laugh a lot and can't seem to stop talking about licking pencils. Two out of three of them sound sexy and do good accents. The other one does a lot of bad accents. In the second segment, Kayley and Connor answer fan questions about their writing process. One of them does more bad accents and the other one makes fun of her. We kick off season two of Farscape with somewhat of a mixed review. First up, episode one, “Mind the Baby”, where we pick up after the exciting events of the season one finale. Can the crew be reunited in time before Scorpius finds both Moya and her offspring Talyn? Can they finally escape this asteroid field? John and D’Argo get some more bonding time. And Talyn is being a pain in the neck, literally, for Crais. And then we “discuss” episode two, “Vitas Mortis”. There are some good “Farscape nuggets” to mine from the episode despite what we thought of the main plot. Oh well, they all can’t be winners. Eric Scott and Jason Johnson.

It's 1999, and the (fictional) IASA organization is testing a new spacecraft designed by scientist John Crichton that will help propel humanity into the stars. Crichton overshoots just a LITTLE bit, and ends up running into an alien spacecraft on the other side of the galaxy, accidentally causing the death of the very conspicuously human-like pilot. Pursued by the Peackeeper armada, John is taken in by a group of prisoners escaping aboard a living ship. Now John Crichton is trying to find his way back home, but has to survive this strange new world long enough to do so. Vinnk and Sean share their college-era memories of one of the greatest science fiction (or should we say "SYFY"?) series of all time, and how well it holds up over 20 years later - especially the practical effects and muppet aliens provided by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. As one of the last series of the 20th century, there are over 20 episode per season to get through, compared to most of our other reviews, but you don't have to bust out your VHS tapes or fullscreen, non-anamorphic DVDs to watch along. Starring: * Ben Browder - John Crichton * Claudia Black - Aeryn Sun * Anthony Simcoe - Ka D'Argo * Jonathan Hardy - Dominar Rygel XVI * Lani Tupu - Pilot / Captain Bialar Crais * Gigi Edgley - Chiana Available on Amazon Prime Video and Blu-ray.

"Crais-y for books" This one is a literary ramble about novels, comic books, and in particular one series: The Elvis Cole and Joe Pike books by Robert Crais (although Bond and Batman obviously get a mention too). We also touch on the novels Armada and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and therefore end up in movie territory territory again. If you want to hear Andy threaten his marriage with comedy anecdotes - this one is for you. And why not talk about shelving solutions whilst we're at it. Yes we're getting to that age as other discussion points will prove in this one (Mountain Warehouse receipt - we're looking at you). Due to a busy holiday travel schedule, Matt and I were unable to record a new podcast for early December. Instead, we are offering bonus content! In October I presented at the Great Lakes History Conference in Allendale, MI on five African topics for world history instructors. These topics were designed to link with the Michigan social studies curriculum which divides world history into several main time periods. Elementary social studies instructors deal with the pre-1500 period, and I suggest the Indian Ocean coast as an ideal topic. At the high school level, I use the trans-Atlantic slave trade to explore the First Global Age, the life of Sara Baartman to examine the dark side of Global Revolutions (1700-1914), and the Cold War in the Congo as well as soccer in Africa to explore 20th Century and Contemporary Global Issues. This presentation is also available in its entirety on Youtube courtesy of the Michigan Council for History Education, where you can watch the other presenters on my panel (Dr. Michael Huner and Dr. David Zwart, both from Grand Valley State University) as well as the questions from the audience. While there is no specific recommendation section to this episode, each of the following books explores one of my topics in depth – Mugane, The Story of Swahili;  Walvin, The Zong; Crais and Scully, Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus; Nzongola-Ntalaja, Patrice Lumumba; Alegi, African Soccerscapes
