This week's episode is a really juicy one so buckle up! Can we have a fulfilling, safe and healthy sex life when we're unpartnered? Is sex an essential part of the human experience or are there other ways to find intimacy? Our guest this week is Cyndi Darnell, a certified clinical sexologist, psychotherapist and couple's counsellor based in New York. She works with singles, traditional couples and people in open, polyamorous, kinky and consensual non monogamous relationships. She walks us through what sex can look like if we're not partnered, how our sexual appetites change through different seasons of our life, and the less conventional, but no less fulfilling, relationship structures available to us. In an extremely candid episode, Jill shares experiences from own sex life, as Cyndi helps navigate a path through a topic that is often shrouded in shame and secrecy. And Cyndi speaks about her rich and full child-free, single life and how she's rejected social expectations and embraced ‘relationship anarchy'. You can follow Cyndi on Instagram: @cyndi_darnell or visit her website here. To stay in touch with Well Enough Alone, you can follow us on Instagram @wellenoughalonepod or @jillstark__ or support the show and get subscriber-only, early and ad-free episodes on Patreon. Well Enough Alone is a Spare Room production. [If you have a question of your own, or would like me to give a Second Opinion of someone else's advice, get in touch via the link tree here https://linktr.ee/culturesexrel ] “My question is about (changing) feelings of disgust in sexual contexts. My sense of disgust can change rapidly depending on context. For example, most of the time I really don't like kissing, even the idea is repelling to me.” It's okay. We shouldn't have to find any kind of sexuality to be normal, or okay, or expected. Doesn't matter what kind of relationship we're in. Some things we are told are ‘normal' part of sexuality are deeply weird when we think about it! Polymorphous perversity. (Here's that episode https://soundcloud.com/podcast-co-coopercherry/three-essays-on-the-theory-of-sexuality ) Navigating discrepancy is the normal (there are tips about this in our book A Practical Guide to Sex). https://megjohnandjustin.com/relationships/sex-discrepancies/ https://megjohnandjustin.com/sex/enjoy-penis-vagina-sex-want/ https://megjohnandjustin.com/sex/enjoy-non-genital-sex/ Perhaps think about the different ways of doing them. Maybe you need more mutual sex where you are both doing something with each other at the same time, or you might need to go one at a time. There's some really great stuff about this in Cyndi Darnell's book https://cyndidarnell.com/book/ (we did a podcast earlier this year, check it out) (Though I still think we are actively having sex with each other even if one person is receiving pleasure and the other ‘giving' it. If pleasure was only about this giving and receiving mode, the giver gives and the taker takes, then how come I enjoy touching other people's bodies?) Disgust and consciousness. How things become conscious and how we might pay attention to other affects. The exceptions. Kissing is great. Enhances sexual pleasure. What's the difference? What do you notice? Things change rapidly, this is really useful. Can things change in the other direction? I didn't talk about Epicurus, Lucretius and The Swerve, but I probably should have because that would have been fun. Here's a good podcast about it https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/who-was-lucretius-with-thomas-nail/id1512615438?i=1000575225008

Here we are with Season 5 of the Why Doesn't My Partner podcast! This episode is about mismatch, but don't let the title fool you - it's not just about sex. It's about the discomfort of experiencing mismatch in your partnership, and the shame of wanting something that maybe somewhere in your life, you've learned is not okay. Starting with this You-turn, we cover topics like discovering your psychological floor, and how to notice the subtle cues that tell you you're nearing it. How do we open up about our ingrained beliefs around what's okay when it comes to sex? What does it mean to move from a culture of shame to a culture of pleasure?Today's invitation is to start building a map of your relationship to sex, sexuality, and pleasure. What are all the things you've learned from your family, culture, society, and your past? Next, what do you know about your own desire? About what does or doesn't feel good to you? And how has that changed over time? Because it probably has! Once you've done that, take a listen to the episode for an exercise you can do with your partner to get the conversation started.Resources mentioned today are Sex When You Don't Feel Like It by Cyndi Darnell, Come as You Are by Emily Nagoski, and Magnificent Sex by Peggy J. Kleinplatz and A. Dana MénardQuotes:“Especially in places where we're all the same, we stop taking risks. We stop trying to figure things out. We're not in a place of, 'I wonder if I did it differently, what would that feel like?'”"Your psychological floor is as unique as a fingerprint.""It's really hard to talk about what we don't know."Share your questions with us at whydoesmypartner.com/contactIf you want to dive in deeper, consider attending our upcoming workshops. Welcome back to the WDMP Podcast. Today's question leads us into exploring what we each understand sexual intimacy to mean, and what we can do if that understanding doesn't seem to line up with our partner's. We're encouraging you, dear listeners, to start to learn about and understand your own sexual templates: what are your likes and dislikes, what are some of the beliefs you have about what those preferences mean, and what in your history has led you there? When you and your partner each engage in that personal work, then there's an opportunity to talk to each other, confront the projections that might be going on, and come to a place of greater intimacy and understanding.Quotes:"There's a huge range of how we express ourselves and how we embody ourselves sexually.""Foreplay begins 48 hours before you're intimate with each other.""We're sold this lie, through Hollywood and everything else, that there's something about sex that's supposed to be natural, and we're all supposed to get it.""We're basically looking at two things when we talk about sex. We're looking at, where's the arousal, where's the gas? And where's the brakes?"A great resource for working through discovering your own sexual template is Sex When You Don't Feel Like It: The Truth about Mismatched Libido and Rediscovering Desire by Cyndi Darnell. There are a ton of sources for sex advice out there, which is great. But too many of them suffer from the same problem: they take a one-size-fits-all approach when, in reality, different things are going to work for different people. We each have a unique sexual self, which means that if you don't have a certain level of self-understanding, it can be difficult to know which advice to take--and which advice to leave. What our culture teaches us about sex isn't very useful. Many of us have absorbed the message that sex is a means to some kind of end–orgasm, connection, a baby.  We've learned that there's a right and a wrong way to do it.  We've even learned that sex is natural.  It's no wonder then that when our libido doesn't match our partner's or our desires don't match our politics, we assume there must be something wrong with us.  Here's the real truth:  There is nothing wrong with you.  Or your partner.  So many of us have just been trying to conform to someone else's narrow version of sexuality (often without even realizing it).  If we slow down and take the time, we can instead get to know the sexuality that is uniquely ours and the fulfillment we all deserve. This week's guest, Cyndi Darnell, says in her forthcoming book,  "The body has always belonged to either God or science. There has never been a time in Western history that the body truly belonged to the person who inhabits it."  She says we can begin to reclaim our bodies for ourselves by unlearning the things we've been taught about sex that aren't serving us.  By rediscovering our libidos and desires.  By learning how to show ourselves to ourselves.  By being in our bodies.  Cyndi, clinical sexologist & sex & relationship therapist who works with clients all over the globe, is here to tell us how. A lot of us don't realize that we even have bodies, we don't pay attention to feeling them and being aware of them. Practice being in your body by consciously making a mental connection to one random and particular part of your body, then moving to another part, and another. This same notion of awareness is also important to our sexual experiences.   Somatics is a different way of addressing the client's needs. We're not necessarily looking for what's “wrong”, as in some traditional forms of therapy, but just assessing what's “present”.   Perhaps, we need to rethink our culture around viewing bodies with a lens of shame and incorporate somatics into clinical practice alongside intellectual/ cognitive methods.

What are the benefits of feeling awkward? How do we get better at talking about pleasure? What happens if we go to feeling bad to feel good in controlled yet kinky consensual contexts? Alex shares and insight they received in a client session on how to navigate shame that really impressed them. Then Dr Alex & Cyndi address an erotic quandary from a listener about sexual highs, sobriety, fantasy sex, feeling how we want to feel during sex and creating hotter sex through life changes, preparation & communication. Cyndi Darnell is an internationally renowned sex and relationship therapist. Her approach spans the clinical to the esoteric. She’s spearheading progressive sex & relationships seminars and workshops for adults and clinicians that deeply change people’s lives. Cyndi’s on a mission to eliminate stigma from discussions around sex, erotisim and pleasure and changing our fears and transform it into freedom.   In this episode: How the sexual revolution missed the boat to discuss pleasure (especially womxn’s pleasure) that center on what each individual’s motivation is.  Permission to own your motivation. Understanding the story that you’re holding onto that’s holding you back and causing you pain.  Cyndi shares her distinct definitions of love and sex (much like chocolate and red wine). Sex changes over time and so we continue to learn about ourselves.  The more we experience ourselves the more we understand our motivations.  Internal motivation is vital, know why you want things to change. Sex can be an opportunity to live a more visceral and colorful life. Erotic pleasure relates back to early childhood before we had stigmas, values and judgements placed upon us and receive the smiling gaze of another.  Societal misconceptions: the body is inherently dangerous and the intellect is superior.  How we participate in keeping myths alive by cutting ourselves off from our own bodies. How to reconnect the body through a daily practice of tuning into the body. Mastrubation as a way of intergrating erotic pleasure into your life,  “Erotic Self Care” Consent Culture and Sex Ed that goes beyond Abstinence, Reproduction and even Consent and includes Pleasure. Tea and Consent video made an assumption that everyone likes tea: oversimplification of consent being yes vs no The real question is ‘what kind of sex do you like?’ Cyndi says this is where the wheels come off for most people. Making a practice of talking about sex and erotism. Cyndi’s erotic awakening story. Coming back to the body, that’s where the wisdom is.    RESOURCES: Find Cyndi Darnell online at www.cyndidarnell.com Purchase Cyndi’s video series: The Atlas of Erotic Anatomy and Arousal If you long to know more about erotic desire, passion, what your turn-ons are and how to communicate them with your partner/s – then join Cyndi for The Desire Series. Practice of Being Seen

Sex is a richly complex part of being human and there’s no one way to experience it.  It can be a catalyst for spiritual connection or a source of deep trauma.  It thrives on play.  It emphasizes pleasure for pleasure’s sake.  It enacts politics and power plays.  It insists on respect and permission.  And, in our culture, it is tightly bound to shame.      This week’s guest is Cyndi Darnell, one of Australia’s leading sex and relationship therapists, and she asks us to consider what would change if we acknowledged that we do in fact have bodies, without which we cannot experience the world.  She wants us to know that it is safe to talk about our bodies, our experiences, our desires.  In fact, she invites us to consider how radically different our world could be if we were more comfortable talking about sex.  How would this change your relationship with yourself or your partner?  How would it change how we raise our children?  How would it change the status quo?   The beginnings of sex therapy as a field, sensate focus and mindfulness with a “small m”. Sexuality as a complex intersection of the many facets of the human experience, but with emphasis on radical acceptance of our bodies. Creativity and limitations as opportunity for sexual and pleasure expansion. The reductive and detrimental effects of typical sexual education, how it affects us even many years later, and how we can do differently in educating our kids. The benefits and limitations to applying mindfulness principles to somatic exploration, and ways that tantra can pick up where mindfulness leaves off. Prioritizing touch as both the giver and receiver, and the transformational power in realizing we have agency in both contexts. Three simple ways to activate the parasympathetic nervous system to clear the pathway to pleasure. The differences between surrender and submission, and the role of permission in both. The sexual politics and power dynamics that exist in every relationship, whether we choose to see it or not--and how power plays out when we refuse to see it. What therapists can do and shouldn’t do if they are uncomfortable with dealing with sex issues in the clinical space.   Referenced in this episode: Cyndi’s sex education video series for adults, The Atlas of Erotic Anatomy and Arousal The Omega Institute in New York, where Cyndi occasionally leads workshops.   You can connect with Cyndi Darnell at CyndiDarnell.com, and follow her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.   Are you loving listening to the Practice of Being Seen podcast?  You can tell us what you want more of on our Feedback page, leave us a review on your favorite podcast app, or just buy us a cup of coffee so we can continue shining more light on topics that matter.   Oh, and note your calendars, Rebecca will be co-leading a fabulous 5 day retreat at Menla for couples this Valentine’s week, details available here.

The human body is an incredible pleasure machine, the sensations and experiences we can potentially experience are incredible. Until recently though, it wasn’t really an aspect of science that was studied particularly thoroughly. Even today there is a lot that is unknown or unconfirmed. There’s a lot that is though, and it’s a lot more than you would have learned in school sex ed classes (if you were even lucky enough to get sex ed.) That was more about reproduction than sex, more about how to have babies and not have babies, than about pleasure, intimacy and sexual delight. We’ll be joined in this episode with another of Australia’s great Sex Geeks, Cyndi Darnell, who is creating a fabulous project on sexual anatomy. Join us to find out more about your fabulous body and it’s awesome sexual potential! Guest Info Cyndi Darnell is one of Australia's leading sex therapists with over 20 years experience studying human sexuality from the clinical (M.HSc / Grad Dip C/HS) to the esoteric (Sexological Bodywork and Tantra).
