POPULARITY
The life of Michael Parenti is truly extraordinary, as he witnessed two significant cultural movements that changed the word. Growing up in Malibu, he went to school with the likes of Sean Penn and Charlie Sheen, met a young Madonna before she was an international star, hung out in Bob Dylan's house, and saw live acts like Nirvana and Red Hot Chilli Peppers long before MTV made them famous. As an internet entrepreneur, he became involved with the Bitcoin Foundation and also saw the early days of Ethereum. He attended hundreds of events, spoke with some of the people who are completely unapproachable today, and found himself in the middle of something magical, naive, and revolutionary. In this episode, we talk about the backstage politics that Michael Parenti witnessed and what it was like to believe in the cyhpherpunk dream more than a decade ago. Fascism is being mentioned more and more in the context of U.S. and European elections. It is a term that is bandied about often rather loosely. Orwell wrote that it is understood to be "something not desirable." But it is a complex political and economic synergy that has racism, force and nationalism as its animating matrix. It involves heavy doses of propaganda and media manipulation. Mussolini, in one of his more honest moments said, "Fascism should be more properly called corporatism, since it is the merger of state and corporate power." For Americans it is universally associated with despotic regimes in other countries. It can't happen here. Huey Long, the self-styled populist governor of Louisiana, once warned, "If fascism ever comes to America, it will come wrapped in an American flag."
The set up to Mass Shooter is “I will destroy the world and then kill myself.” In simple terms, the War game version of Now I've Got You, You SOB! is the climax of Mass Shooter. Both games involve the Othering of a certain person, group, or ethnicity, which creates an obstruction between oneself and the Other. The same can be said for competing nation-states. This Othering justifies violent retaliation. Mass Shooter involves White (“it”) surveilling Black (weakness for the game) in order to find injustices to enact revenge. The relatively minor infraction is weaponized by White to unleash their fury. Black then retaliates against the fury. When Black's inevitable retaliation occurs, it authorizes a claim of “self-defense” even though White was in an offensive position. White was looking for provocations to license a game of Now I've Got You, You Son of a Bitch! (NIGYSOB!) For example, the U.S. militarily occupies the Middle East, which provokes the 9/11 attacks. Two decades later, under the guise of the illusory “war on terror,” (see Hide & Seek) the U.S. enacts revenge on one of the “masterminds” who allegedly planned the attack. Israel occupies the Palestinians to provoke attacks by Hamas in order to seek revenge and domination: NIGYSOB! The Mass Shooter combines NIGYSOB! with the supremacist version of Kick Me. Mass Shooter is driven by White's need to be perceived by Others (Black), i.e., social recognition. White's perception is that Black will regret how they treated White, e.g., for the bullying, criticism, lack of sexual interest. White makes themselves agitated (bound up sexual energy), which leads to violence. The exhibitionism of the murders, which is often livestreamed, is the destructive version of the Influencer game. Consider Columbine. One of the masterminds was Eric Harris who imagined the massacre would one day be made into a Hollywood movie: “For Eric, Columbine was a performance. Homicidal art. He actually referred to his audience in his journal: “the majority of the audience wont even understand my motives,” he complained. He scripted Columbine as made-for-TV murder, and his chief concern was that we would be too stupid to see the point. Fear was Eric's ultimate weapon. He wanted to maximize the terror. He didn't want kids to fear isolated events like a sporting event or a dance; he wanted them to fear their daily lives. It worked. Parents across the country were afraid to send their kids to school.” (p. 277) His existential life position was I'm OK, You're not-OK (arrogant and paranoid). Therefore, Harris felt a sense of superiority over Others and plotted revenge. In the book, “Columbine”, it is noted that “Eric equated “unique” with “superior.” For example, Harris obtains injustices and gets revenge: he would attack his peers' houses “to retaliate for perceived slights, but most often for the offense of inferiority.” (NIGYSOB!). The armaments give White situational power to inflict the most damage: I'll Show Them. White is more interested in the effects the shooting has on their enemies or friends (carnage) than they do in the rewards itself. Contrary to popular understanding, the Columbine massacre was not a nod to 4/20 or Hitler's birthday, but a replication of Timothy McVeigh's work four years (to the day) prior. McVeigh's devastating Oklahoma City bombing of 168 innocent people was revenge, i.e., NIGYSOB!, for the federal government's actions against the Branch Davidian compound in the 1993 Waco siege. According to Michael Parenti in his book The Terrorism Trap, McVeigh was associated with the “Christian Identity” group. So, in addition to attacking the federal government, he was also fascistically attacking “the Jews, liberals, and other secularists who have dislodged white Christian America from its spiritual moorings.” McVeigh is therefore one of the Original Mass-shooter Gangsters (see OMG, e.g., Unabomber). The initial commencement date for the Columbine attack was Apri...
Gabriel Rockhill joins to talk about a controversial concept for Western socialists: “siege socialism”. A term coined by the great Michael Parenti. Unlike most episodes of this show we won't be focusing on a specific country but examining the variety of past and present socialist countries through the lens of historical materialism and dialectics, two concepts Gabriel explains for us. Gabriel Rockhill is the Founding Director of the Critical Theory Workshop, Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University, and the author or editor of over nine books, as well as numerous scholarly and general public articles. He is the editor of the upcoming translation of Domenico Losurdo's magisterial Western Marxism: How it was Born, How it Died, How it can be Reborn. It is is a paradigm-shifting book that provides a trenchant critique of the Western left intelligentsia. It reveals how its dominant ideological orientation—characterized by defeatism, utopianism, and anti-communism—is rooted in the political economy of imperialism. A constant throughout history from Ancient Rome to today is the rich and powerful seek ever more wealth and control. If a popular leader innovates reforms that help the poor they come under sustained attack or worse they are killed. Go back to Caesar in Rome. The standard view is he was a power-hungry tyrant who was slain by the “noble” Brutus and his cohorts to save the Roman Republic. These were some of the measures Caesar implemented which so infuriated his enemies. He distributed land to thousands of veterans and poor Roman families. He began a program of public works. He pushed through rent reductions, reduced debt burdens, and granted Jews the right to practice their religion. These reforms, Michael Parenti says, were unacceptable to the ruling class. Thus, Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March 44 B.C.

To celebrate hitting 2k followers on Twitter, I decided to unlock the first part of our investigation into Pelley, Gen. Smedley Butler, & the Wall St. Putsch conspirators—enjoy. Two ways to support PPM: follow @parapower_mapping on Insta & subscribe to the Patreon before Pt. III drops in a couple days: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping We're talking Bill Pelley—literal Nazi agent, Christian Theosophical crank, spiritualist, newspaperman, espionage agent, screenwriter, reborn clairvoyant, founder of a UFO cult, Soulcrafter, publisher of shitty antisemitic magazines, & founder of an American Nazi paramilitary known as the Silver Legion. But first, we parse the failed Wall St. Putsch (aka Bizness Plot), setting the stage for our investigation of Pelley, as various industrialist backers of the scheme, conspirators, & the legislative body that uncovered it (maybe involuntarily) figure into W.D.P's story. We're talking McCormack-Dickstein Committee, predecessor to HUAC; Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler, Alfred P. Sloan, I. DuPont, JP Morgan Jr., Prescott Bush, Felix & Max Warburg, Grayson Murphy, Gerald Macguire, & a # of references to Henry Ford in this one. We discuss: Marine Corps Gen. Butler & the Bonus Army; possibility the American Legion was funded w/ coups in mind; FDR cucked by Wall St.; the Putsch's origins in Executive Order 6102; Biz Plot taking inspiration from German putsches; John L. Spivak's exposé in "New Masses"—gotta give it to Spivak for his farsighted analysis of the capitalist underpinnings of rising fascism in Germany & US; coup organizer Gerry MacGuire's sus death at 36 yrs old a mere year or 2 after the plan unraveled; the Co. that had Murphy as board member; Robert Sterling Clark serving under Butler = potential complicity; Butler's undercover escapade in Standard Oil-backed int'l espionage; Butler, Clark, & Murphy's shared military campaigns (China, Boxer Rebellion, & Philippine-American War specifically); speculation about whether—contrary to the conscientious antiwar activist portrayals—Smedley was infiltrating antiwar & left mvmts in US; Butler's military career lasting exactly 33 years (

We've now heard Fustel de Coulanges' understanding of the disturbances in Ancient Rome as revolutions brought on by changes to their religious belief structure. We've considered Machiavelli's fawning historical interpretation of Rome, through Livy, as a people who were more virtuous than any other, and maintained that virtue by subjecting themselves to privation and hardship, and who fell into unrest when they strayed from virtue. And we've now heard Turchin's view, that the unrest of the Roman Republic was created by structural-demographic factors. Now, we hear the people's history of Ancient Rome, from Marxist-Leninist Michael Parenti, whose view I wanted to include because it was so different from any other in how he views Julius Caesar and his role in Roman history: as a reformer and liberator of the people, killed by an entrenched oligarchy who wished for nothing other than to hold on to their wealth. Parenti walks through the history of the Late Republic as a history of increasing excesses of the nobility, which was then challenged by people's tribunes and other attempts at reform. In all cases, the nobility put down the reformer, but Caesar was different because he was only assassinated after he'd managed to succeed, and to redistribute the land and the wealth. The legitimacy of the senate was forever shaken, for Caesar was forever the people's champion, and it was thus that it required a civil war afterwards, and only the man who most successfully presented himself as Caesar's heir was able to win and secure order once again - even if he was not revolutionary that Caesar was. Parenti attacks the view of the 'gentleman historians' of Great Britain, and throughout history, who have viewed Rome as a true republic, with democratic representation. Instead, Parenti makes the case that Rome was ruled by a closed-off patriciate who cared for nothing other than their own wealth, and were even willing to undermine the health and stability of their empire in order to extract more. Caesar was the incarnation of this popular uprising into one man, who was willing to break all of the limitations and decorum the nobility had put into place as a means of ensuring that nothing ever changed. Caesar, rather than a tyrannical villain who was justly killed by Brutus, the "noblest Roman of them all", Parenti portrays Caesar as a tragic hero, who was the only hope for saving the republic and achieving justice.
Every now and then I like to highlight the fact that all this China stuff was forcast way back in 2004 by Michael Parenti, who said that the unipolarist neoconservative ideology that had hijacked US foreign policy envisioned a massive strategic confrontation with Beijing. "The PNAC plan envisions a strategic confrontation with China, and a still greater permanent military presence in every corner of the world," Parenti wrote in his book Superpatriot. "The objective is not just power for its own sake but power to control the world's natural resources and markets, power to privatize and deregulate the economies of every nation in the world, and power to hoist upon the backs of peoples everywhere — including North America — the blessings of an untrammeled global 'free market.' The end goal is to ensure not merely the supremacy of global capitalism as such, but the supremacy of American global capitalism by preventing the emergence of any other potentially competing superpower." Michael Parenti has said that "Poor countries are not 'under-developed', they are over-exploited." The west tends to look down on the rest of the world for reasons that either directly or indirectly relate to the poverty in those nations, which is silly because that poverty comes largely from western theft and exploitation. It's like mugging someone and then scorning them for their empty wallet. If you boil it right down and get real about it, most of the pride in western civilization is ultimately pride in being better at killing and stealing than other people. We're still morally at the level of invading and plundering nations while claiming it's justified because we are stronger than them, it's just procedurally a few clicks removed from doing that directly. We revisit an interview with Michael Parenti from November 2005. Chuck is back next week.

Imperialism is a term not applied by the mainstream media and traditional academics to anything the U.S. does. However, it is liberally applied to contemporary enemies or hoary empires of the past. Michael Parenti defines imperialism “as the process whereby the rulers of one country use economic and military power to expropriate the land, labor, markets and natural resources of another country in order to attain ever greater capital accumulation on behalf of wealthy interests at home and abroad.” Washington is always looking for euphemisms to cloak its real intentions thus “rules-based international order” is gaining currency. U.S. interventions are presented as promoting noble causes such as human rights, opposing tyranny and bringing democracy to others, and on and on.
I was so excited for this show and was not disappointed. Brad ( @urcommunistdad ) helped me understand so much about marxism/leninsm. I elaborate in the intro, but its hilarious that we were brought together thru a mutual hate of the CIA. Anyway, listen w/ an open mind. The point of this show is we all can agree our system has failed. It is not working and a change must occur or our country and our world will disappear. Our listeners know that Steve is a perpetual student -- his YouTube show is called The Rogue Scholar. He makes no apologies for past incomplete or erroneous thinking; he just soldiers on, deepening his understanding of the issues and course-correcting his analysis. He is a voracious reader and we can identify at least three books that led to this week's episode: https://bookshop.org/a/82803/9780393651362 (The Divide), by Jason Hickel, https://bookshop.org/a/82803/9780872863293 (Blackshirts and Reds), by Michael Parenti, and https://bookshop.org/a/82803/9781913026028 (Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism), by Vladimir Lenin.* They have all fed into his obsession with neocolonialism and the unholy trinity of the IMF, World Bank, and WTO. The problem predates the modern neoliberal era: “Lenin talks extensively about taking out these loans. Now, mind you, the IMF wasn't around ... But this whole concept of global finance capital was already being talked about at the turn of the century. And what he showed was that these countries that took on these big loans, they would be fine for a year. And then by the next year, they were already losing money, deeply in debt, and by the third year, they had to take out another loan.” Steve summoned our old friend Fadhel Kaboub to take us through the history of the unholy trinity, connect it to monetary sovereignty, and untangle the cat's cradle of international power and oppression. Who better than Fadhel, whose superpower is his ability to explain complicated systems in words anyone can understand? Fadhel begins with the currency wars in the period between the first and second World Wars. After WWII the allies gathered to establish a means of preventing currency wars in the future. You've heard of Bretton Woods? Well, did you know two competing plans were presented? Keynesian and... not Keynesian. Keynes's plan was designed to promote full employment globally. The universe ended up with the non-Keynesian International Monetary Fund, or IMF, and the World Bank. “The World Bank was initially designed to be the bank for the reconstruction of Europe, essentially. And eventually after Europe was rebuilt, it was reinvented as an economic development bank for the global south, because in 1945, when the World Bank was designed, there were no developing countries, there were just colonies. So by the mid 1960s, all of those colonies are now developing countries, and the world needed a World Bank for economic development ... it's designed for long-term infrastructure, major projects, as opposed to the IMF, which was designed as the emergency room for financial crises.” The third leg of the unholy trinity is the World Trade Organization. Fadhel guides us through its origins and evolution. It turns out the entity committed to free trade limits itself to “free trade in everything but arms and farms.” Once the former colonies became independent, the former colonizers looked around and said, “Uh-oh, where are we getting our food?" With food now an issue of national security, powerful nations are subsidizing agricultural staples; farmers in the developing world cannot compete. Throughout the episode, Fadhel illustrates how these three institutions are able to ham-string the global south. He talks about the three main structural traps – food, energy, and low-tech manufacturing. The further the developing world is pushed into desperation, the greater the benefits to the global elite. Can the post-colonial nations cast off the chains of economic oppression and poverty? Fadhel provides answers, showing how the MMT analysis not only brings the problems into focus, but provides solutions. The final twenty minutes of this episode are perhaps the most important. *When you purchase these books through RP Bookshelf on our website, we make a small percentage on the sale.
