Head Coach Dawn Staley's 2024 recruiting class is impressive, but will it rank as one of the best? Staley's first significant class in 2014 featured A'ja Wilson, Jatarie White, Jaydra Duckett, and Bianca Cuevas. In 2016, Tyasha Harris, Araion Bradshaw, and Mikiah Harrigan joined the team. The 2017 additions were Elisia Grissett, Bianca Jackson, and LaDazhia Williams. The 2018 class spotlighted Destanni Henderson and Victaria Saxton. The 2019 "freshie" class included Aliyah Boston, Zia Cooke, Laeticia Amihere, and Breanna Beal, while Eniya Russell came in 2020. Raven Johnson, Saniya Rivers, Sania Feagin, and Bree Hall joined in 2021. Ashlyn Watkins and Talaysia Cooper were the newcomers in 2022. And in 2023, Milaysia Fulwiley, Chloe Kitts, Tessa Johnson, and Sahnya Jah were welcomed. The season starts with a match against the Michigan Women's Basketball team in Las Vegas on November 4th. NBA – Bill Russell, NBA star and civil rights pioneer, dies at 88 The NBA great Bill Russell has died at age 88. His family said on social media that Russell died on Sunday. The statement did not give the cause of death, but Russell was not well enough to present the NBA Finals MVP trophy in June due to a long illness. Russell anchored a Boston Celtics dynasty that won 11 titles in 13 years. His last two were as the first Black head coach in any major U.S. sport. Russell was a Hall of Famer, five-time MVP and 12-time All-Star. He won with defense and rebounding and waged battles with Wilt Chamberlain. Russell also marched for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. and stood with boxer Muhammad Ali when he refused military induction. NFL – AP sources: Decision in Watson discipline case coming Monday A decision on discipline for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson following accusations of sexual misconduct is coming Monday. Two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that retired judge Sue L. Robinson has informed the NFL and the NFL Players’ Association she’s ready to issue a ruling on Watson’s disciplinary hearing that concluded a month ago. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. Watson was accused of sexual harassment and assault by 24 massage therapists in Texas and has settled 20 of the civil lawsuits filed against him. Four lawsuits remain pending and the attorney representing the women has said he hopes to take them to trial sometime next spring. Golf – PGA – Finau wins Rocket Mortgage for 2nd straight PGA Tour victory Tony Finau ran away with the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday at Detroit Golf Club to become the first PGA Tour player in three years to win consecutive regular-season events. Finau closed with a 5-under 67 for a five-shot victory and a tournament-record 26-under 262 total. Taylor Pendrith, Patrick Cantlay and rookie of the year front-runner Cameron Young tied for second. Finau coasted to his fourth career victory, a third title in 11-plus months. He was the 3M Open winner last week in Minnesota, where he rallied from five strokes back to win by three. Brendon Todd was the last to win two straight in the regular season, doing it in 2019. Golf – LIV – Stenson wins LIV Golf event and gets $4 million in debut Two weeks after Henrik Stenson was stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy for Europe, he’s a winner in his debut on the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series. The Swede got large and immediate returns. He shot 69 at Trump National. He won by two shots over Dustin Johnson and Matthew Wolf. And the payoff for Stenson was $4 million for the individual win, and $375,000 for his team finishing second. Dustin Johnson now has three top 10s in three event and already has made just over $5.2 million. The LIV Golf series doesn’t return until the first weekend in September. NASCAR – Reddick wins at Indy to close best month of NASCAR career Tyler Reddick closed the best month of his NASCAR career with a victory in overtime on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He broke through for his first career victory on July 3 with a win at Road America in Wisconsin and announced nine days later he was leaving Richard Childress Racing in 2024 to drive for Michael Jordan’s team. His second win in five races made Reddick the first Childress driver since Kevin Harvick in 2013 to win multiple races in a season. Austin Cindric finished second in a Ford for track owner Roger Penske and was followed by fellow rookies Harrison Burton and Todd Gilliland, who both had career-best finishes. NCAA – Pac-12’s Kliavkoff jabs Big 12, touts future after USC, UCLA Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff says his conference is far from finished, despite the defections of Southern California and UCLA. Kliavkoff confirmed the Pac-12 is actively exploring expansion during an eventful, occasionally feisty opening speech at his conference’s football media day in the nation’s second-largest media market. While painting a promising picture of the league’s future even after USC and UCLA leave for the Big Ten in 2024, Kliavkoff also threw several jabs at the Big 12. Stroman was placed on the injured list without a designation, likely meaning the right-hander was shelved by a COVID-19-related issue. Steele stepped in, making his first appearance since April 30. But he was checked on by manager David Ross and a trainer before the fifth inning, and then walked off the mound after a short conversation. MLB – White Sox eager for Moncada The scraped-up White Sox hope third baseman Yoán Moncada can make his season debut when Chicago opens a three-game home series against Cleveland. The 26-year-old Moncada has been out since the last week of spring training with a strained right oblique, one of several key players sidelined for the South Siders this season. The White Sox have won six straight to climb back over .500 for the first time since April 20 despite still missing sluggers Eloy Jiménez and Andrew Vaughn and starter Lance Lynn. NASCAR – Logano bumps Byron on next-to-last lap for Darlington win Joey Logano bumped leader William Byron from behind and into the wall on the next to last lap to win at Darlington Raceway on Sunday. Logano tracked Byron for about 25 laps until running up to his rear bumper, smacking it hard and sending Byron into the wall. Logano went on to his first win of the season and his first ever at the track “Too Tough To Tame.” The victory ended a 40-race winless drought for Logano, who last won on the dirt at Bristol in 2021. Byron fell to 13th and called Logano “an idiot.” Formula 1 – Verstappen wins inaugural F1 race in Miami Max Verstappen used an aggressive early pass on Formula One championship leader Charles Leclerc then controlled the inaugural Miami Grand Prix for his third victory of the season. The reigning world champion started third, but Red Bull quickly got the best of Ferrari for a second consecutive race. Ferrari settled for second and third for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. Golf – PGA – Homa rallies for fourth career PGA win Max Homa now has four career PGA wins, with half of those coming in the Wells Fargo Championship. Homa turned a two-stroke deficit into a two-shot win over Keegan Bradley near Washington, D.C. It comes three years after he won the Wells Fargo title at Quail Hollow. The tournament was moved to Maryland this year while Quail Hollow prepares to host the Presidents Cup in September. A two-shot swing on the 15th hole gave Homa a three-shot lead. He closed with a 2-under 68 for an 8-under total in his second win of the season. Golf – Champions – Flesch wins at Sugarloaf again Steve Flesch rallied from four shots behind with a 7-under 65 for a one-shot victory in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, his second title at the TPC Sugarloaf. Flesch also won this tournament in 2018, his only other win on the PGA Tour Champions. David Toms had a two-shot lead on the back nine when he missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 13th and then a 6-footer for par on the 14th. Horse Racing – Rich Strike’s team considering Preakness options after upset The celebration after Rich Strike’s stunning Kentucky Derby upset continued long into the night. The 80-1 longshot has the sports world buzzing. Next up is for Rich Strike’s trainer Eric Reed and the rest of his chestnut colt’s team to decide whether the storybook journey continues at the 147th Preakness on May 21 in Baltimore. Similar decisions also loom for the favorites whom Rich Strike surged past for the improbable win at Churchill Downs. MLB – MLB looking at electronic system for calling pitches Major League Baseball is stepping up its experimentation with an electronic communication channel for calling pitches. After trying out the PitchCom system at Low-A West in the second half of last season, big league clubs are tinkering with the technology during spring training. If the development is met with widespread acclaim, the system could be used in the majors this year. With the PitchCom system, the catcher wears a wristband with nine buttons for calling the pitch and location. There is a receiver in the pitcher’s cap, and another one in the catcher’s helmet. Multiple languages are available. NCAABSB – College baseball goes high-tech to send pitch calls to mound A growing number of college baseball teams are moving away from the tradition of catchers using their fingers and hands for pitch signs. The NCAA this year is allowing teams to have a coach in the dugout press into a keypad numbers corresponding to different pitch types and transmitting the information to a wristband worn by the pitcher. The technology called Game Day Signals was developed by a small Virginia software development company. Several college baseball powers are using the devices.
