Pour donner le top départ de cette nouvelle année, il nous fallait un max de bonnes ondes et une personne capable de nous transmettre l'impulsion de rigueur en ce mois des traditionnelles « bonnes résolutions » ! Et pour cela, la plus italienne des françaises, s'est très vite imposée en pole position.Alice Cheron est bien connue des amoureux de l'Italie, car elle a su faire sienne cette « dolce vita » que l'on envie tant à nos voisins transalpins. Un art de vivre à l'italienne qu'elle partage, propage, diffuse et enseigne même... sous toutes ses formes.Elle a tout d'abord créé il y a 10 ans un blog intitulé « Ali di Firenze », devenu sa signature ! Maybe it's not the right time, but never say never.Natalie Smart loved working with textiles as a youngster, from hand knitting to making her own clothes. Unfortunately, Textiles as an A-Level subject was discontinued at her school just as she was about to join the sixth form. Natalie was quite academic, so she had other choices.Faced with the decision of whether or not to take out a loan to go to university, Natalie decided against it, and instead found a job in pensions. Knitting and making clothes were now hobbies enjoyed whenever she could find time to fit them in.When she was 23, Natalie's brother tragically passed away in a car crash. It was, understandably, a difficult time for Natalie, and she threw herself into her job. However, she also started to think that perhaps she should be doing more of what she loved – hand knitting. She studied on a City and Guilds course in hand knitting and knitwear design, which she was able to fit in around her office job. The course gave her the confidence to consider working in the industry and creating her own patterns.Knitwear designing for magazines became profitable for Natalie, but she was scared of being in the public eye. This fear held her back from utilizing the opportunities she had created for herself, and she returned to office work.Now Natalie has re-found the confidence to start making patterns again, but not for knitwear.What is Natalie's new creative love? Donatello in Florence, the Biennale of Sydney and Eduardo Navarro's seed installationThis week, as the Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence present a survey of Donatello, one of the greatest of all Italian Renaissance masters, we talk to Arturo Galansino, the Strozzi's Director General, and Paola D'Agostino, Director of the Bargello museum, about the show. The Biennale of Sydney in Australia has just opened, with the theme of rīvus, meaning stream in Latin. José Roca, the Biennale's artistic director, and Alessandro Pelizzon, co-founder of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature, discuss the Biennale's concept, bringing rivers and other “aqueous beings”, as Roca and his curatorial colleagues call them, into dialogue with artists, architects, designers, scientists, and communities. What does it mean if you grant rivers and other natural forms rights? And this episode's Work of the Week also explores nature, ecology and the relationship between humans and natural phenomena. Continuano le nostre visite alla scoperta di Firenze e questa volta vi raccontiamo dell'Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte. Vi consigliamo di andarci in un periodo migliore rispetto all'estate italiana, perché per arrivarci si deve faticare un po': c'è una salita molto ripida da affrontare! In ogni caso, vale la pena di vedere questo monumento, continuate a leggere per scoprirne di più! Una gita fuori porta a Firenze Per arrivare all'Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte, si può fare una bella passeggiata dal centro di Firenze, passare per i vicoli e arrivare "fuori porta", cioè al di là delle porte di una città, all'estrema periferia della città, dove solitamente comincia la campagna. Prima di arrivare all'Abbazia si possono trovare tanti posti dove mangiare, ma un posto in particolare ha colto la nostra attenzione perché alcuni panini avevano nomi che si riferivano a modi di dire toscani, per esempio: Giueee!: è un'esclamazione che significa "Accidenti!". Maremma maiala!: esclamazione che esprime disappunto, sorpresa, fastidio, stupore, paura o approvazione. Brindellone: indica una persona sciatta e trasandata nel vestire e scomposta nel camminare; un po' oziosa e svogliata. Ganzo: indica una persona eccezionalmente astuta e scaltra, che per questo suscita scalpore e ammirazione. Ma continuiamo con la nostra passeggiata per arrivare all'Abbazia...La strada per arrivare lì è molto ripida (ha una forte pendenza) ed è faticosa da salire, anche perché bisogna passare 273 gradini! La prima tappa prima di arrivare è Piazzale Michelangelo: Fu realizzato nel 1869 da Giuseppe Poggi, quando Firenze era Capitale d'Italia, ed è il punto d'osservazione panoramico più famoso di Firenze. In quel periodo era in corso il Risanamento (miglioramento) della città, così sulla costa sinistra dell'Arno vennero costruiti il Viale dei Colli che arriva alla collina di San Miniato, dove spicca questa terrazza panoramica e l'Abbazia. Dal Piazzale si possono individuare tutti i monumenti più importanti di Firenze come: il Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, il Museo Nazionale del Bargello, ma anche le colline a nord della città dove si trova Fiesole. Fortunatamente quando hanno risanato questa parte di Firenze, hanno reso il viale alberato, quindi ci sono numerosi alberi e piante, che ci permettono di prendere fiato e goderci un po' di ombra. Da qui, si prosegue un po' più su e si arriva all'Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte. Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte A chi è dedicata l'Abbazia? San Miniato è il santo a cui è stata dedicata ed è stato il primo martire della città di Firenze. Pare che intorno al 250, una volta giunto a Firenze, iniziò la vita di eremita, tuttavia, durante le dure persecuzioni cristiane venne decapitato. Secondo la leggenda, il santo non morì dopo la decapitazione, ma presa la sua testa sotto il braccio, la portò sul colle fiorentino dove aveva vissuto come eremita. Su questo luogo è stato costruito un santuario e poi una cappella, la costruzione dell'attuale chiesa iniziò nel 1013. Descrizione La facciata di San Miniato è un capolavoro dell'architettura fiorentina che si ispira agli edifici monumentali romani. È divisa in due fasce: la parte inferiore è caratterizzata da archi con colonne in marmo bianco, mentre quella superiore mette in evidenza la struttura della chiesa. Sulla facciata sono presenti particolari in marmo nero e anche un mosaico del 1260 che rappresenta Cristo e tra le Vergini e San Miniato. Sulla sinistra si trova il campanile, che nel 1500 era usato per come deposito per l'artiglieria della città. L'interno dell'abbazia è completamente decorato: il soffitto è a capriata (in legno), il pavimento è intarsiato (abbellito) e si può trovare un pannello riguardante lo zodiaco, sono presenti dei mosaici e nella Cappella del Crocefisso si trovava il Crocefisso Miracoloso, che ora si trova in Santa Trinità. Preparatevi un caffè e mettetevi comodi perché leggendo questo articolo assisterete a una delle sfide più accese e agguerrite della storia! Sto parlando della sfida tra due opere d'arte, due sculture che sono certamente tra le più famose in Italia… e nel mondo! DAVID versus… DAVID. Nessun errore! Mi riferisco al David di Michelangelo e il David di Donatello, che si trovano entrambe a Firenze. Leggendo questo articolo imparerete l'origine delle statue, cosa le accomuna e le loro differenze.    Chi è David? Come dice il nome stesso, le due sculture rappresentano lo stesso soggetto, David, protagonista dello scontro biblico contro Golia. Secondo la storia raccontata dalla Bibbia, le vicende del giovane Davide risalgono all'epoca ebraica. Il giovane viene descritto con un carattere ambivalente: crudele e allo stesso tempo generoso. È spavaldo e impavido, ma riesce a riconoscere i propri limiti ed errori. Le vicende narrano che Golia, un gigante al servizio dei filistei, impauriva e sfidava gli ebrei. Davide affronta Golia senza armatura, armato solo di una fionda e qualche pietra. Il gigante, infatti, deride il ragazzo, che però lo riesce a sconfiggere e a uccidere. Questo eroe incarna la vittoria della ragione sulla forza bruta e l'irrazionalità. A parte quest'unica somiglianza, le due sculture hanno delle nette differenze! Le analizzeremo insieme e poi vi dirò la nostra preferita...non dimenticate di scrivere nei commenti quale vi piace di più!   David di Donatello - carta d'identità   Caratteristiche: Il David di Donatello è stato realizzato intorno al 1440, quindi è il più vecchio. È stato commissionato per il cortile del palazzo Medici da Cosimo de' Medici. La scultura è in bronzo ed è alta 158 cm.   Composizione: Donatello rappresenta David come un adolescente semplice, modesto, umile, perciò reale. Il suo corpo è gracile, ma armonioso e leggero e si intuisce la fierezza provata dal ragazzo. È rappresentato nudo, senza armatura, con i capelli lunghi e sciolti. Indossa solo un cappello a punta decorato con una corona di alloro (che si chiamava Petaso e veniva indossato dai pastori) e dei calzari che gli arrivano fino al ginocchio. Nella mano sinistra tiene il sasso con cui ha appena colpito il gigante Golia; nella mano destra, invece, ha una spada. Sotto i suoi piedi c'è la testa decapitata di Golia.   Stile:  Donatello si ispira alle composizioni di Prassitele, uno scultore greco antico. L'artista rappresenta tutta la potenza di Davide ma in maniera molto naturalistica, l'espressione di orgoglio e superiorità infatti, gli conferisce un aspetto molto veritiero. Non c'è una posizione privilegiata per ammirare la statua, la si può guardare interamente girandoci attorno. Un altro elemento che denota veridicità è l'espressività della testa di Golia e l'accuratezza nel rappresentare la sua barba.   Curiosità: Ai tempi, questa statua non piaceva molto: in particolare, alla gente non piacevano i tratti e i lineamenti del David, considerati troppo effemminati. Alcuni studiosi hanno pensato che la statua, in realtà, rappresentasse il dio Mercurio, dato il copricapo particolare. Questa scultura dà il nome al più importante premio cinematografico italiano (è l'Oscar italiano, per intenderci). Infatti, il giovane eroe di Donatello che sconfigge il gigante è il simbolo della genialità, della creatività e della perfezione stilistica italiana. Il premio che viene consegnato ai vincitori è proprio una versione del David in scala ridotta, realizzato in oro da Costantino Bulgari. Attualmente, il David di Donatello non è più nel cortile del Palazzo Medici, ma si trova nel Museo del Bargello.   David di Michelangelo - carta d'identità   Caratteristiche: Il David di Michelangelo è stato commissionato all'artista (che aveva solo 26 anni) nel 1501 dall'Opera del Duomo di Firenze, per essere utilizzato per l'esterno della cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Ognuno possiede una “città del cuore”.Quella città dove ci si sente a casa. À partir de Florence, une variété de styles s'épanouit alors de Venise jusqu'à Rome. La représentation de la figure humaine dans la diversité de ses mouvements prend alors des formes extrêmement novatrices. L'exposition propose également d'aller à la découverte d'artistes moins réputés, d'admirer des œuvres difficilement accessibles de par leur lieu de conservation (églises, petites communes, situation d'exposition dans les musées), afin de les remettre en lumière, mais aussi en contexte.« Le Corps et l'Âme » fait suite à l'exposition « Le Printemps de la Renaissance » présentée en 2013 au Louvre et au Palazzo Strozzi et consacrée aux prémices de l'art de la Renaissance à Florence dans la première moitié du Quattrocento.Trois parties majeures structurent l'exposition :Dans La fureur et la grâce, les compositions complexes s'attachent à traduire la force et l'exaspération des mouvements du corps, inspirées des modèles antiques, qu'on reconnait dans les œuvres d'Antonio del Pollaiolo, Francesco di Giorgio Martini ou Bertoldo, mettant en jeu autant la force et les torsions du corps masculin que l'effet expressif des plus intenses passions de l'âme. A contrario, des drapés élégants, entourant des corps majoritairement féminins, permettent aux artistes de révéler le charme de la figure humaine, qui débouche sur la représentation ultime de la grâce à travers le nu.Emouvoir et convaincre souligne une volonté affirmée de toucher violemment, dans les représentations sacrées, l'âme du spectateur. À la suite du travail de Donatello autour de 1450, l'émotion et les mouvements de l'âme prennent une place déterminante au cœur des pratiques artistiques. Parallèlement au domaine de la peinture (avec le « style doux » du Pérugin ou du jeune Raphaël), la sculpture développe la recherche d'une nouvelle harmonie qui transcende le naturalisme des gestes et des sentiments extrêmes. Particulièrement vivante dans un classicisme affirmé en Vénétie et en Lombardie, cette quête d'une beauté expressive qui aspire à l'universel s'incarne également fortement en Toscane et à Rome où la Papauté de Jules II et de Léon X joue un rôle d'irrigation et d'unification stylistique.Le stile dolce aboutira au commencement du XVIe siècle avec l'apparition du « sublime », mettant en place un nouveau classicisme sous l'impulsion de Raphaël et Michel-Ange.Dès la fin du Quattrocento, Michel-Ange opère cette synthèse formelle qui intègre à la fois la connaissance scientifique des corps, un idéal absolu de beauté et la volonté de dépasser la nature par l'art. This episode examines Donatello's sculptural representation of the St. George subject for the Sword and Armor Guild at the church of Orsanmichele, although both sculpture and niche are in the Bargello Museum today. Not only was this first sculpture of the Renaissance to depict a subject in a narrative context, it also largely inspired Michelangelo's David nearly a century later. 

This episode examines Donatello's seminal heroic interpretation of the "David" subject in sculpture. Removed from its original context at the Duomo and inserted into a civic setting at the Palazzo Vecchio, the statue became the symbol of divine protection for the Florentine Republic.

This episode examines the event that sparked the Renaissance - the famous competition between Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi in 1401 for the contract for a set of bronze doors of Florence Baptistry. These two Renaissance giants produced bronze relief panels depicting the Old Testament subject of the sacrifice of Isaac in radically different ways, and the result of the competition determined the professional path that each artist would follow.

Henry Lawson (1867–1922) wrote poetry and short stories about Australian life which had a popular appeal; he became a legendary figure in his lifetime. He established a natural colloquial voice and wrote in a lucid, understated prose style, with immense sympathy for the hard lives of those who lived in the bush. His stories include ‘The drover’s wife’, and two of his collections, While the billy boils (1896) and Joe Wilson and his mates (1901), remain classics of Australian literature. Like the majority of Australians, Lawson lived in a city and had limited experience of country life. During his last twenty years he only wrote spasmodically, as he suffered from alcoholism and mental illness. He was the first Australian writer to be granted a state funeral, attended by the Prime Minister, Billy Hughes, and the Premier of New South Wales, Jack Lang. Lawson’s image appeared on Australia’s first ten-dollar note, issued in 1966 (ADB). In this sculpture Lambert created a lifelike, roughly dressed individual, accompanied by a swagman, a dog and a fence post, an image that was eminently natural and Australian. The Sydney Morning Herald critic suggested on 26 March 1930 that ‘the central figure shows a remarkable likeness to the poet’, and certainly Lambert portrayed him with his identifiable bushy eyebrows and moustache. He faithfully captured the posture and dress of a particular man at a specific time, but he was concerned principally with evoking a state of mind: he showed Lawson making the gesture he usually did when he was searching for a thought or reciting verse. By showing Lawson in the company of a swagman (‘Sundowner’ was the term in 1930) and dog, Lambert suggested the poet’s allegiance to the poor and humble, and created a visual metaphor of Australian mateship. Lambert’s carefully constructed but understated work embodies the poet’s prose style, which was consciously crafted to have a natural effect. Such a laconic naturalness has become an identifiably Australian characteristic, and to this extent Lambert’s approach in this work also conveys an Australian attitude. The sculpture also has a more general aspect: the swagman and his dog could be characters from one of Lawson’s bush stories. The old man hints at the older Lawson himself, a man who became a dishevelled figure as a result of alcoholism and mental illness. In this way Lambert created a specific image of the two ages of Lawson, and a universal one of the two ages of man. Lawson’s son Jim posed for the figure of Lawson, and the model for the swagman was Conrad von Hagen (Wilson 2004, p.145). Lambert, however, went beyond mere likeness: Lawson’s pose, with his outstretched right arm and stooped back, resembles that of St John in Rodin’s St John the Baptist preaching 1878–80, which Lambert may have known from the cast presented to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1902. The seated swagman in this sculpture, his right hand held up to his face and left arm relaxed over his knee, may derive from Rodin’s best known work, The thinker 1880, which Lambert may have known from a cast which was acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1921. The pose of the standing figure is also like that of the classical marble sculpture Hermes Logios , the god of oratory. And as noted above (see cats 102, 103), the pose of Lambert’s loose-kneed gesturing figure of Lawson also resembles that of Michelangelo’s marble sculpture Bacchus 1497 (Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence), and that of the swagman is similar to Michelangelo’s depiction of the prophet Jeremiah in the Sistine Chapel, Rome. The sculpture was formally commissioned by the organising committee of the Henry Lawson Memorial Fund on 18 November 1927, though Lambert had been notified of his selection in December 1926. The committee had raised funds from the public, including thousands of school children (ML MSS 97/7, item 27). The brief had specified a work of art which showed Lawson as an Australian of the bush, as well as an accurate bronze likeness of him. The sculpture had to be dressed as a bush worker without coat or vest, with his shirt open to the neck, close fitting trousers (not riding breeches), boots of the type worn by Australian soldiers during the war and a soft felt hat which had lost its stiffness (ML MSS 97/5). Apart from the soft felt hat, Lambert’s sculpture met the committee’s specification. In 1926 Lambert had made several pencil studies for this group, and a sketch for the proposed group in its Sydney parkland setting. The final work was unveiled in the Domain, Sydney, on 28 July 1931 by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Philip Game.
