Not all recovery houses are the same. Matt Bair and Ryan Hedrick break down the difference between standard recovery homes and Oxford Houses—one’s a structured group home with rules, and the other is self-run by the people living there. They dig into whether these places help or if they sound good on paper. Spoiler: When done right, they can change lives. Oxford Houses stand out because they’re run by the people in them, with no outside management calling the shots. On the other hand, regular recovery homes often have staff overseeing everything. Matt and Ryan get real about the good and bad and what works for people trying to stay clean. If you’ve ever wondered whether these places are a lifeline or a letdown, this episode has the answers. To find Oxford House locations nationwide, visit their house directory at https://oxfordhouse.org/house-directory. This resource allows you to search for houses by state and city and offers contact information and vacancy details. Oxford House maintains individual state websites for state-specific information, including local resources and contacts. You can access these through their state website page at https://www.oxfordhouse.org/state-websites. If you're in Indiana, the Oxford House Indiana website details local houses, application processes, and support resources. Visit https://www.oxfordhousein.org for more information. For real-time vacancy updates, OxfordVacancies.com offers information on available beds across various Oxford Houses. National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR): NARR sets national quality standards for recovery residences and offers a directory of certified homes through its state affiliates. Visit their website at https://narronline.org to find links to state-specific organizations that can assist in locating certified recovery homes in your area. Get $10 off at Nutrafol.com when you use promo code Insane! CW: This episode contains discussions of drug use, addiction, and miscarriage. Heroin is a drug derived from opium poppy plants that can quickly lead to addiction. Heroin use can cause an overdose, increase the risk of contracting infectious diseases, and lead to a range of health problems, including mental health problems. Prescription opioids, like OxyContin and Vicodin, can also be addictive. They can cause physical dependence and increased tolerance, leading to misuse and a higher risk of addiction. Some people turn to heroin when they can no longer get prescription opioids or need a stronger high. To reduce the risk of addiction, it's important to take prescription opioids as directed by a healthcare professional and to never share them with others. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction to heroin or prescription opioids, seek help from a healthcare professional or addiction treatment center. Today we have an opportunity to talk with a man of many talents. Paul Golf is deeply committed to the Kingdom of God and is a CHAMPION of HOPE in this broken world. In fact, Paul and his wife, Grace, founded a ministry called Champions of Hope. He is an Academic, Author, Researcher, Linguist and Spiritual Leader who is equipping believers to see the world through the lens of HOPE and discover spiritual solutions for every challenge.  He is the co-author of the book The Coming Chinese Church. In addition he is a program director of translation studies at Bristol University and a research associate with Oxford House Research.  Paul shares his incredible understanding and life experience around Finding Jesus in Places that HE is not Supposed to Be and learning to depend on real-time wisdom from the Holy Spirit for effective decision making.  Paul strives to inspire hope and remove fear … and the impact is powerful. In this interview Paul and I resonate around the concepts hope and how we discover heavenly solutions for ‘secular' issues in the world. Paul shares deep understanding on the Biblical roots of HOPE and how it functions as a generator for Faith and Love. Did you know that we are promised access to the Wisdom of God?  Ephesians 3:10 says, “His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.” By Design every ‘natural' problem has a ‘spiritually' informed solution! Paul walks us through how a naturally supernatural life style of accessing Wisdom and Guidance from the Holy Spirit makes the impossible possible and enables you to actually manage your Metron. She has been a woman in long-term recovery since December 2018 and has devoted herself full-time to expanding the network of Oxford Houses in the eastern part of the state, including some of North Carolina's most rural counties. I met Jennifer through Instagram and after I saw what she was promoting, I immediately knew I wanted her as a guest speaker on my podcast.  I get many requests to interview celebrities because people like to know about their lives. And I have interviewed celebrities. They are ordinary people just like you and me. Jennifer is just like you and me. Only to me, each human is extraordinary in their own way.   Jennifer is 47 years old and spent 13 years of her life abusing alcohol and drugs. That doesn't define her. What defines her is her heart and soul and beliefs and what she is doing with her life now. During her years of abuse she experienced more than any of us should in a life time. She was a victim of violent crime a multiple of times. She was car jacked twice. She was shot in a drug deal gone bad. She was kidnapped at gunpoint, beaten and whipped by a drug dealer and had to have her face reconstructed. (btw...that drug dealer committed homicide while he was on an ankle monitor for her kidnapping, was sentenced four years for her kidnapping and is currently waiting for his trial on the homicide.) She finally got sober on 07/13/21 after being arrested on her first ever drug charge. She moved to Charleston to live in an Oxford House(sober living) and has been sober for 214 days now. Not because she was court ordered. Not because someone she loved gave her a choice but because she chose to. Remember if it's not our own choice, more than likely it won't last. She went through recovery with the help of a 12 step program. Since she's been sober she has started two business's. Keto Queen City- an online Keto products store and she believes that Keto has helped her stay sober by curbing her cravings for drugs/alcohol.  Her second business is on : https://www.InspiringSobriety.com this is an online recovery and sobriety apparel and gift store. Her story is real and raw and heartbreaking and yet inspirational. Our chat is long but interesting and helpful. I hope you will take the time to listen and share, wherever you can and to all your friends, asking them to do too. helpful resources include. "Jesus is the great kintsugi master." "Something that's broken is already more valuable than when it's whole." "The imagination creates, through the fractures, a river of gold, a mountain of gold." Makoto Fujimura joins Miroslav Volf to discuss Art & Faith: A Theology of Making. Fujimura is a painter who practices the Japanese art of nihonga, or slow art. His abstract expressionist pieces are composed of fine minerals he grinds himself and paints onto several dozens of layers, which take time and close attention both to make and to appreciate.Mako and Miroslav discuss the theology and spirituality that inspires Mako's work, the creative act of God mirrored in the practice of art, the unique ways of seeing and being that artists offer the world, which is, in Mako's words "dangerously close to life and death." They reflect on the meaning of Christ's humanity and his wounds, the gratuity of God in both creation from nothing and the artistic response in the celebration of everything.Show NotesMakoto Fujimura's Art & Faith: A Theology of MakingIlluminated Bible by Makoto FujimuraMary, Martha, & LazarusGenesis Creation NarrativeArt follows in the footsteps of the creatorThe reasons for God's creationWhy would an all-sufficient God create anything?God as "a grand artist with no ego and no need to create."Communicating about art and theology outside the boundaries of the institutional churchReconciliation between art and faithGod's gratuitous creation doesn't need a utilitarian purposeCreating vs makingIn artistic creation, something new does seem to emerge"God is the only artist"The scandal of God's incarnation: In becoming incarnate, God's utter independence is flipped to utter dependence.Psalmist's cry to GodHow art breaks the ordinaryThe artist's way of seeing and beingSeeing as survivalSeeing with the eyes of your heart"Artists stay dangerously close to death and life"Getting beyond the rational way of seeingLetting the senses become part of our prayerWilliam James on conversion: everything becomes new for the convertedSeeing with a new frame of beautyFaith and the authenticity of seeing with the eyes of an artistEmily Dickenson on the "tender pioneer" of JesusHartmut Rosa on resonance—in modernity, the world becomes dead for us, and fails to speak with us, but we need a sense of resonanceKandinsky and Rothko—artists' intuitive sense of resonance that has escaped the church in the wake of mid-century destructionMary's wedding nard oil and the gratuitous cost of artThe non-utilitarian nature of artUsing precious materials in artTear jarsMiroslav's mother regularly weeping and crying: "I wonder why God gave us tears? Robert Kushner, in the mid 90's, written on Fujimura's art in Art in America this way: “The idea of forging a new kind of art, about hope, healing, redemption, refuge, while maintaining visual sophistication and intellectual integrity is a growing movement, one which finds Makoto Fujimura's work at the vanguard.”Fujimura's art has been featured widely in galleries and museums around the world, and is collected by notable collections including The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Huntington Library as well as Tikotin Museum in Israel. His art is represented by Artrue International in Asia and has been exhibited at various venues including Dillon Gallery, Waterfall Mansion, Morpeth Contemporary,  Sato Museum in Tokyo, Tokyo University of Fine Arts Museum, Bentley Gallery in Phoenix, Gallery Exit and Oxford House at Taikoo Place in Hong Kong, Vienna's Belvedere Museum, Shusaku Endo Museum in Nagasaki and Jundt Museum at Gonzaga University. He is one of the first artists to paint live on stage at New York City's legendary Carnegie Hall as part of an ongoing collaboration with composer and percussionist, Susie Ibarra.  Their collaborative album "Walking on Water" is released by Innova Records. As well as being a leading contemporary painter, Fujimura is also an arts advocate, writer, and speaker who is recognized worldwide as a cultural influencer. A Presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003-2009, Fujimura served as an international advocate for the arts, speaking with decision makers and advising governmental policies on the arts. This award is presented annually to professional artists who have made significant contributions to the relationship of art and religion, both for the academy and a broader public. Previous recipients of the award include Meredith Monk, Holland Cotter, Gary Snyder, Betye & Alison Saar and Bill Viola. Fujimura's highly anticipated book "Art+Faith: A Theology of Making" (Yale Press, with foreword by N.T. For the parents and guardians listening and wondering how you can help prevent your children from drinking alcohol or experimenting with marijuana or other drugs at an early age – we encourage you to talk to your kids. Have a conversation – ask them what they know, see about alcohol and other drugs at school, in the community, and on social media. What questions do they have? How do they feel about it all?. There have been many studies on the links between creative people and drug and alcohol abuse. And while many of these studies are somewhat outdated or inconclusive, the fact is that in the state of North Carolina, about 233,000 individuals aged 12 or older abuse illicit drugs each year. So, to help me unpack what abuse and recovery look like, particularly in the performing arts community, I reached out to Beau Clark. Beau, who attended the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music or CCM, was a member of this theater community and was last seen in NEXT TO NORMAL at North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre last year. Hear what he has to say on this episode of the RDU on Stage podcast about abuse, addiction, and his journey to the other side. About the Guest Beau Clark’s life prior to Delancey Street was a whirlwind of drugs, alcohol and reckless behavior. As a professional theater actor turned singer in a rock band – Beau found immediate and pervasive access to party culture and he took advantage of that access to an excessive degree. His selfish, manipulative and morally bankrupt lifestyle led him to homelessness, heroin addiction and complete reliance on others for even rudimentary survival. He sat on the bench at The Delancey Street Foundation’s New York facility a broken husk of a man, with no sense of personal responsibility, accountability or boundaries. After his graduation from Delancey Street in 2014, Beau remained intimately connected with both the organization and the people who taught him to live a life with character, honesty, and integrity. As a result, he has found success in both business and philanthropic tropes. Professionally, Beau became Service Coordinator for the prestigious “Faust Harrison Pianos” in New York City and was able to grow a small, mostly outsourced team into a profitable and renowned staff of piano technicians. Outside of work, he carried the Delancey Street philosophy of “A helps B, and A gets better” long after his graduation. He led the charge for A Doorway to Hope’s Angel Tree Project, coordinating Christmases for over 100 underprivileged children each year. Additionally, he volunteered regularly with the Food Bank, The Croton Falls Fire Department, Sonorous Road Theater, North Raleigh Arts Creative Theater, The Walkabout Chorus, Activate Good and Unchain Durham. Beau was happy with his life and assumed he would retire in the piano industry and continue volunteering his free time– until he learned of the magic happening in Salt Lake City. His love of the process he learned at Delancey Street led to a curious visit to The Other Side Academy. Over the course of that weekend, it became abundantly clear to Beau that this is where he belonged. Mako Fujimura is an artist and a philosopher. He’s been blowing my mind for 15 years, first with his painting and then with his writing. "Culture is not a territory to be won; it is instead a resource we are called to steward,” he has said. That statement is a rebuke to the last forty years of American life. Mako is a Christian, and so he is in particular rebuking American Christianity. He gives us a radically different paradigm through which to view the world. He is a renowned painter. His works have been shown all over the world, at "the Dillon Gallery in New York, Sato Museum in Tokyo, The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts Museum, Bentley Gallery in Arizona, Gallery Exit and Oxford House at Taikoo Place in Hong Kong, Vienna’s Belvedere Museum, Shusaku Endo Museum in Nagasaki.”"He is one of the first artists to paint live on stage at New York City’s legendary Carnegie Hall as part of an ongoing collaboration with composer and percussionist, Susie Ibarra.”Mako paints using an ancient Japanese technique called Nihonga, which relies on the use of pulverized minerals and is makes use of papers made from Japanese mulberry and hemp fibers. He has likened his use of these pulverized minerals to the way that suffering can be redeemed in our own lives. "These materials themselves have to be pulverized and pounded to become beautiful,” he said.We talk about his experience on 9/11/01, when he lived three blocks from the World Trade Center and didn’t know for some time that morning whether his children, who were in school two blocks from the towers, had survived. This is from an August 2019 commencement address: "After 9/11, I had to train my imagination by painting over and over images of fire. I needed to transform haunting memories and images of destructive fire into the fire of sanctification. When I saw the spire fall at Notre Dame last month, yes, I was right back where I started — but I was able, also, to turn my mind and my heart back to my studio near Ground Zero, and again go into my daily practice toward sanctification. These fires do not have to end in destruction. Fire can purify our memory and desire. (“Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.” T.S Eliot, The Wasteland) A renewed neuron network can form, if we imagine through the darkness." Mako has written three books: “Culture Care,” “Silence and Beauty,” and “Refractions.” His work on “Silence and Beauty” brought him into collaboration with renowned director Martin Scorsese, who directed the film “Silence,” a story based on the Japanese novel by the same name written by Shusaki Endo, which plays a big part in Mako’s book.
