Each May, the U.S. recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month, established 75 years ago to highlight the importance of this essential issue in Americans' lives. It's also a time to recognize the resilience of people who live with mental health conditions and honor all those who stand by them – a group that includes both family and friends, and the dedicated mental health care professionals providing services to improve their well-being. Psychologist Jason Schiffman is deeply committed to assisting others. The professor of psychological science heads a research team that has published over 200 scientific articles and acquired over $15 million in funding for their work on psychosis. He also trains and consults for clinics across the county on best practices for supporting people on the psychosis continuum. As the director of UCI's Clinical Psychology Program, he helps guide cohorts of graduate students who are similarly compelled to provide mental health care for others. What is psychosis and what do we know about it? Why do mental health challenges like psychosis still have a pervasive stigma and how can our community come together to change that? How is UC Irvine playing its part in providing mental health services with its new Psychological Services Center, and how can community members access care? What are some simple steps we can all take to protect and improve our own well-being? Schiffman answers these questions and more in this episode of the UCI Podcast. The music for this episode, titled “A Quiet Thought,” was provided by Wayne Jones via the audio library in YouTube Studio.

In this episode, Host Annette Hines honors the legacies of Boston Marathon competitor Rick Hoyt and her daughter, Elizabeth, through a tribute to author and previous Parenting Impossible guest, Jess Ronne, and her use of the word "grit" to mean a will to persevere amidst the challenges of living as a special needs family. Rick Hoyt and his father, Dick Hoyt, showed continual grit as Team Hoyt as they entered as dual Boston Marathon participants for the first time in 2012 with Dick pushing Rick in his wheelchair during the course. The marathon administration had to develop a new classification for their participation because no one before them had ever entered to run as a team.  Rick Hoyt's cerebral palsy left him as a quadriplegic, and he recently passed away on May 22 due to complications in his respiratory system.  Team Hoyt persevered with grit to complete the Boston Marathon course 32 times as well as over 1,000 other races, and their courage, determination, and indomitable spirit stand as a model to others that Yes You Can set goals, challenge yourself, and accomplish the difficult. Hines also recounts the grit of her daughter, Elizabeth, who passed away 10 years ago in November of 2013.  That same year in April, the Boston Marathon Bombing occurred right at the same time as Elizabeth's entrance into hospice and gradual ultimate decline. Each May, which is Elizabeth's birth month, Hines retells the legacy of her daughter and how Elizabeth fueled Hines' passion and desire to provide the resources families with disabilities need to protect themselves and their loved ones. Hines reminds listeners that despite the hardships and difficult moments that families and individuals with disabilities encounter, it's essential to cherish life and live in the present with grit.  Let us know what you think of this episode! National Police Week is an outgrowth of President John F. Kennedy's 1962 proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officer's Memorial Day. Each May tens of thousands law enforcement officers gather in Washington D.C. to recognize the sacrifices and valor of those who wear the badge. In this episode we examine National Police Week through two lenses. Nohemy Hite is a police widow and founder of the Erik Hite Foundation. Dave Bray is a former Navy Corpsman who is now a national recording artist and staunch advocate for the men & women of law enforcement. When a fan sent Dave a recording of the “last call” for Brad Fox, a Pennsylvania officer killed in an ambush,   he could hear the clear emotion in the dispatcher's voice.  Dave himself was so shaken by the recording that he picked up his guitar and wrote the song “Last Call.” He also wrote the song “Survivor” for the families of fallen officers. Nohemy's husband Erik had a life of service. He served in the Air Force security forces for 21 years before joining the Tucson Police Department. Erik had been an officer for four and half years when he was ambushed and killed on June 2, 2008. She formed the Erik Hite Foundation the following year as a way to cope with the pain and provide support for other law enforcement families. Both Nohemy and Dave both describe their experiences participating in National Police Week activities. Nohemy says that even though participation is painful for her, it does help survivor families find hope. Dave participates regularly because he feels more Americans need to know about the sacrifices that law enforcement families make on our behalf. Dave shares that the average citizen experiences 2-3 truly traumatic events in their life but the average law enforcement officer experiences over 700 traumatic events over a 20 year career. He encourages any first responder that is struggling to connect with the Resilient Minds on the Front Lines organization. TAKEAWAY: “It's Painful. Time doesn't really heal. Time just helps you learn how to deal with your new normal.”

This can result in inflammation, pain, and damage to any organ system in the body. Common symptoms include extreme fatigue, debilitating joint pain, skin rashes, and swelling. While lupus can affect anyone, people with lupus overwhelmingly consist of women and disproportionately impacts certain racial and ethnic backgrounds, including Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian-American and Pacific Islander.Due to the mysterious and elusive nature of this disease, many of the symptoms of lupus aren't always visible, and can often result in years of misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. And, because many of its symptoms and impact aren't always seen, it can lead to those living with lupus to feel misunderstood and isolated.

Each May, as the flowers bloom and the evening light lingers, the world's largest auction houses hold their marquee spring sales in New York, enabling perennial market leader Christie's, its arch-rival Sotheby's, and insurgent Phillips to collectively bring in well over $1 billion in one so-called "gigaweek." But this spring, the COVID-19 shutdown left the Big Three's salesrooms unnaturally quiet in the Empire City and around the world. Starved of vital cyclical revenue, Sotheby's cut hundreds of jobs, while Christie's both restructured and downsized—with all of these moves indicating that blockbuster replacements for the major sales be staged as soon as possible, in whatever form they must take. Cue the screens. In late June and early July, the major auction houses made an unprecedented pivot from IRL to URL with uncharacteristic speed. Auction paddles were replaced with mouse clicks, and some international offices stayed open as late as 4 a.m. to help stage transcontinental, hours-long hybrid sales. As usual, the duopoly of Sotheby's and Christie's provided the overwhelming majority of the action. At Sotheby's, a three-part sale saw auctioneer Oliver Barker seamlessly manage a futuristic bank of monitors ping-ponging in bids from cities around the globe, and the star lot—a triptych by Francis Bacon—brought in a staggering $84 million en route to $300 million in total sales. But Christie's—not usually known for its technological prowess—got the final word with the "ONE" sale, a four-city, four-hour "relay" auction that set a slew of artist records while racking up $421 million overall. How did the houses manage to pull off these unexpected wins in perhaps the most challenging market in our lifetime? On this week's episode, Andrew Goldstein is joined by Eileen Kinsella and Nate Freeman, Artnet News's esteemed auction-reporting veterans, to discuss the lead-up to the history-making summer season, the blow-by-blow at Christie's "ONE" sale, and what it all means for the future of auctions.

"So, what are your plans for next year?" Each May, this question, or some version of it, has been spoken to uncounted young people all across the country. Graduation season always brings out a celebration of the present as well as a renewed focus on the future. This is a time for making plans and decisions that can have a huge impact on graduates, their families, and our community. In the midst of these difficult questions about the future, God's Word provides a beacon of clarity. Solomon writes, "The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord." (Proverbs 16:3 ESV)/ He goes on to say, "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." (Proverbs 16:9 ESV). In other words, God Himself makes the best plans, no matter which way the plans lead. In the absence of certainty about the future, God reminds us that we can accomplish God's Plan for us regardless of where our plans take us, The Apostle Paul knew this very well. He knew how the power of God could radically change his plans, and he knew how God could lovingly guide his plans. Paul never stopped making plans, but he always knew that God established his steps. In our text for this week, Romans 15:14-33, we'll hear how Paul describes his own relationship with his plans, and we'll be encouraged to Live By Faith as we make our plans today.
