Rhoda Blough, our representative from Everence, a faith-based financial services group, references Exodus 16, about manna, and the Matthew 14 passage that describes Jesus feeding a crowd of 5,000. Along with these passages, she shares from a money autobiography and the realization that her parents had left a legacy of abundance to her family. From a blue-collar Mennonite family with nine children and a stay-at-home mom, she was unaware that they were poor. She asks, "What is a mindset of abundance or a mindset of scarcity?" and elaborates on a God of abundance who has given us a universe composed of all we need to thrive. In this episode of The Good Grief podcast, host Pete Waggoner sits with Mike O'Connell and guest, Lori Christopherson to discuss how tattoos can be used as a form of memorializing and honoring a loved one. Mike shares how he discovered Everence, a company that creates personalized tattoo ink additives with a loved one's DNA. Lori talks about her own healing process after the loss of her son and how Mike's suggestion of a tattoo was instrumental in her finding peace and closure. The episode offers listeners vulnerable and honest insight into how tattoos can be therapeutic for those working through grief and how the process of memorializing a loved one can be different for everyone. Takeaways: Every person grieves differently and there is no right or wrong way to do it. Tattoos can be a helpful part of the grieving and healing process as they offer a physical, tangible, and lasting way to keep a loved one's memory alive. The act of memorializing a loved one can be healing for both the person getting the tattoo as well as for those who see it and are reminded of the individual being honored. In this episode [1:25] Host, Pete Waggoner delves into the history of tattoos and how they were used as a form of protection from bad spirits and diseases, especially for pregnant women, thousands of years ago. [3:31] Mike talks about how the loss of a loved one can make people feel powerless and how getting a tattoo can be a way of regaining a sense of control. [8:46] Lori shares her experience in finding the perfect way to memorialize her son and how Mike has helped her in the process. She talks about the different options she's tried and considered such as a necklace pendant but ultimately decided that a tattoo would be the most meaningful for her. [18:16] Lori further talks about her healing process after the loss of her son and how getting the tattoo has been an integral part of that. [23:06] Pete Waggoner wraps up the show by asking Lori how grateful she is for the opportunity and what getting the tattoo has meant for her. In this episode, Dr. Krehbiel reflects on the power of storytelling through the Into Account movement, as well as the challenge of how we treat the work of known abusers. We will also talk about carrying stories of persecution, and how that shapes church spaces as we address sexual violence. Just like part 1, we will be discussing the very real subject of sexual violence and sexual abuse in faith spaces. If you are a survivor of sexual violence who would find this conversation to be trauma inducing, please consider skipping this episode. Today’s show we have an amazing guest named Boyd Renner joining us today. He is a soon to be Alumni from Penn State’s MBA program, a Co-Founder of a startup, and 23-year member of the NSW’s prestigious Development Group. In today’s episode we go over what it takes to get through BUDS and what your mindset should be when going through while tackling what they do to help combat depression and suicide. According to Boyd it is a problem with every unit in the military, even the best still struggle through sometimes. Among the many different strategies used, talking about it is the main way to help someone you think might be off. It may suck, you may even loose a friend. In the end though, which is worse losing a friend for asking/confronting them about what they’re going through, or losing them once they choose to complete suicide. We learn that no matter who you are you go through some stuff. Sometimes just pulling people aside and shooting the s***, getting a coffee, or whatever goes such a long way. “Get out, have a plan before hand, and find that tribe” As many of us know, once you get out, it isn’t all a piece of cake. We learn more about finding a new tribe to replace the one that you left and how to make that one part of your life. We learn a lot about difficulties once you get out from his perspective and how doing something every day to make himself better has kept him grounded. Giving back is always a fantastic idea, as we learn about a walk coming up soon for Cystic Fibrosis. Everyone should check out his and his wife’s page, please donate if you can, share if you can’t. Every dollar helps go to an amazing cause. Have you ever wanted to stay connected to whatever motivates or inspires you?
