The government's Levelling Up the United Kingdom white paper contained ambitious proposals to deliver a devolution deal to every area of England that wants one by 2030, but the proliferation of regional authorities and directly elected mayors across England alongside different arrangements in the devolved nations can make co-operation and co-ordination difficult. This event considered what structures and ways of working could help support cross-government action on levelling up. How well have mayoral combined authorities (MCAs) worked with central government? Do mayoral combined authorities need a single point of contact in Whitehall or is it better to work directly with different departments? Have MCAs successfully encouraged cross-council working on levelling up? How can the UK government work more effectively with the devolved nations? To explore these questions, the IfG brought together an expert panel including: Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council Professor Francesca Gains, Professor of Public Policy at The University of Manchester Dr Jack Newman, Research Associate at The Productivity Institute and the Department of Politics at The University of Manchester Joe Rossiter, Policy and External Affairs Manager at the Institute of Welsh Affairs The event was chaired by Thomas Pope, Deputy Chief Economist at the Institute for Government.

Have you ever heard of “global real estate”? No worries! Most people weren't even aware of it until working with international clients became more accessible. And you're in luck because, in today's episode of The Real Estate Diplomat, we have Jakeeva Lee, the External Affairs Manager for the Chicago Association of Realtors and Manager of Industry and Global Relations for Illinois Realtors to share her experience connecting realtors and consumers worldwide. She has also helped countless professionals work with clients in acquiring and managing properties globally. So, whether you are looking to buy for investment, retirement, or remote work, global real estate has plenty of opportunities that you may want to look into. And there's a lot to take away from this episode, so stay tuned and enjoy the show! Why People Should Invest in ChicagoAccording to Jakeeva Lee, now is the best time to invest in Chicago, especially downtown. It is one of the most culturally diverse among the larger cities in the United States, with its natural, cultural exchange hubs and colorful communities. Not only that but Chicago also attracts new construction from foreign countries worldwide with its impressive skyline and other infrastructures. Additionally, Illinois has just as much potential with its vast farmlands as industrial spaces, attracting more international companies. That being said, Chicago and Illinois' greatness and potential are often missed due to negative messaging about some of the violent acts occurring in the city. But thanks to international property specialists like Jakeeva, Chicago and Illinois get to work with global partners as they put out positive messaging through the realtors and consumers in the community to prove it. Furthermore, the increase in migration to the suburbs in the past year has confirmed that the real estate space is alive and well. And with real estate going in cycles, homebuyers and former renters would be able to take advantage of the migration rate by providing spaces to invest in, whether short-term rentals or long-term residentials. In the end, Chicago, and to an extent Illinois, provides plenty of opportunities for international investments. And so, there is no better time to invest in these spaces than now. Seeing the World as Global CitizensJakeeva Lee said, “living globally is something everyone should try.” When we go to different countries or try to explore a new culture, our eyes are opened to how different and similar we are to people across the globe. In turn, we also realize that the world has so much to offer, even within our community or city. And so, before you work with clients looking to invest in a foreign country, it is best to explore that country yourself. Even if you only went there a couple of times, those experiences reassure your clients that you know where they are investing in. After all, knowing that you love the place they are investing in goes a long way for both you and the client. However, when exploring a different country, always be respectful of the nuances of their culture. But, again, you are still a foreigner, a representative of your own culture who should only work to be a good example. And to do so, we need to see the world and empathize with it as global citizens. In the end, we as humans should understand each other's perspectives. And with how the world is today, it is imperative to feel for someone and understand their point of view. And so, when we travel internationally or interact with a foreigner, we have to put forward that part of us that is willing to give and is open to receive to expand our breadth of global knowledge. About Jakeeva Lee:Jakeeva Lee is the External Affairs Manager for the Chicago Association of Realtors and the Manager of Industry and Global Relations for Illinois Realtors. And as an association professional, Jakeeva has vast knowledge and a strong passion for DEI initiatives, member engagement, growth strategy, and philanthropic structure. Not only that but, she is also known for being an influential thought-leader with over ten years of relationship-building management skills to cultivate vibrant, strategic, external, and global partnerships. This event, jointly organised by the Media Reform Coalition and the Institute of Welsh Affairs, is part of ‘The BBC and Beyond', an MRC campaign which aims to reimagine public media for the digital age. The event focusses on what a reformed public service media landscape within Wales could look like. The BBC has set out its strategic goal to recreate itself as a ‘truly UK wide organisation (…) decentralising power and decision-making across the four nations'. But a healthy media landscape cannot depend on any single organisation, so this event explores how to embed public service media principles across more of the media ecosystem in Wales and the UK. All political parties in the Senedd supported the IWA's call for the Welsh Government to create a new, contestable fund to support independent news. This event considers the innovative journalistic models and practices this fund could nurture and how to ensure it embeds public service media principles – of independence, accountability, democracy and universality – at its heart. We also talk about digital – what role can technology play in enabling more participatory processes, and does Welsh Government's digital strategy contain the right policies to maximise this potential? Where does community media sit in this ecology, and how can the rest of the UK learn from the best innovations coming out of Wales? Panellists: Debs Grayson (Chair) – Campaign Coordinator, Media Reform Coalition Emma Meese – Director, Independent Community News Network Shirish Kulkarni – News Storytelling Researcher, Clwstwr Creadigol Andy Regan – Policy & External Affairs Manager, Institute of Welsh Affairs Lucas Batt – Membership Coordinator, The Bristol Cable This is an hour long panel discussion on Zoom, with an introduction by IWA Director, Auriol Miller.

"What better way to start, than to discuss Vision 2035, which offers a blueprint for maximising value from the UK's oil and gas resources and potentially doubling the UK supply chain's share of global exports.” he added. The Vision 2035 series consists of four short audio episodes which delve into the leaders' thoughts on how achievable the ambition is, the leadership required, and what it means to each of them. Only then does education have the opportunity to be transformative. Greg Wukasch, our mentor at the San Antonio Water System, recapped for us the Transformative Issues conference on Affordability hosted by AWWA and WEF and how the closing panel of both water professionals and non-water community advocates drove home how empathy means inviting everyone to the table that needs to be. Alan Heymann shares a story that demonstrates how empathy begins within, internally, with your own employees. Brand buy-in begins with them. Mike McGill, founder of WaterPIO reminds us that empathy requires putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, even—and maybe especially—your biggest opponents. We chat with Mike about both he and our experiences with Erin Brockovich and what it taught us about the power of walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Beginning in 1998, as an Education Coordinator and now as the External Affairs Manager. Greg really considers himself more of a “story teller” putting together water stories for citizens across the city he loves. When not talking H2O, this self-professed water nerd also enjoys talking strategic planning and corporate culture. Greg and his team have developed impactful programs that have continued to create community between SAWS and the community it serves. These programs include the high school education program Impact. Top Takeaways: So many times we look to each other and compare, especially in the communication and education sphere of the water industry, to get ideas and standards. But affordability is different. Every city is different in terms of demographics, struggles, infrastructure issues, and services therefore affordable water issues will be unique. Go where your people are already gathering. Go beyond the social media and take a more personalized approach with our customers, with your neighbors. Greg’s two big leadership takeaways: have the courage to lead and it’s ok to make mistakes, just handle them well. You can’t be afraid to try something out and if it doesn’t work in the moment don’t be afraid to change it at the last second to meet the needs of your people. Three Key Points: The whirlwind is never going to go away. The key is to find the tools to manage it to stay laser focused and on mission. The we'll be meeting these guests. First will meet with Terri Wonder Manatee County at large Commissioner Candidate. Terri has said - "The argument that voters must choose between the economy and the environment is a false choice. In reality, our environment and economy are both important and interdependent. Imagine the negative impact on our economy if our natural resources are diminished by short-sighted decisions focused on the profit for a few over the public safety interests of everyone else. The economic impact of our environment includes tourism, fishing, boating, real estate values, and public health. The mindset that the legacies of a few developers are more important than everyone else is out of balance and wrong-headed."
