Nate Monroe writes a column about Florida for USA Today, exploring how power works in the gilded, strange heart of the modern Republican Party. His irony and rapier wit have made him a reader favorite but have also ruffled some significant feathers. Previously an investigative reporter for Jacksonville's Florida Times-Union, Nate focused on covering Jacksonville City Hall, the largest municipal government in Florida. His most notable deep-dive exposed a massive, nefarious scheme to sell Jacksonville's city-owned power company to Florida Power & Light ... and led to an indictment and jail time for the local CEO, an enormous win for justice and transparency. For this excellent work, he was surveilled and threatened. “It was obviously surreal," says Nate, "to open a batch of records that I had some sense was about the controversy and to actually discover that there was stuff about me in there” - his full Social Security number, driver's license and a list of friends dating back to childhood — information not readily available as a public record.  His lived experience as a target of attack on the media and honest reporting is emblematic of the challenges facing democracy today. Still, Nate loves his job, is built for it. An old school journalist who came up through the ranks, Nate remains undaunted about speaking truth to power. Prior to arriving in Jacksonville in 2013, he was a small town beat reporter for newspapers in the Deep South, where he wrote about hurricanes, small-town corruption, oil spills, Army Corps screw-ups, Mardi Gras, and bingo nights at the senior citizens center. Nate's work is absolutely critical to keeping our democracy healthy and alive. Have a Swan Dive to share? How I Got Here with Dave Fiore

Host Dave Fiore speaks with Katrina Rolle, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of North Florida. From her days as a varsity cheerleader and student government president at Miami Carol City High School to continuing her family legacy at Tuskegee University and working her way through the University of Florida Law School, even though it was against the rules, Katrina has always found a way to get things done. She dreamed of owning a business at age 14 while working at Burger King and gained valuable experience as a cost accountant with Honeywell and as a supervisor with Florida Power and Light. But it was her 11 years staying at home with her children and volunteering in the community that led to offers to be CEO of The United Way of the Big Bend and most recently the Community Foundation. Katrina, and her husband, Dr. Gary Rolle, were reluctant transfers to Tallahassee, but are now grateful to have invested their lives in the community where they raised their children and are proud to call home.

The week before Thanksgiving, amid what still looks like a boom for window and door makers, local manufacturer PGT Innovations laid off 225 workers in Tampa, and then another 150 in Venice. The layoffs came after PGT was taken over by Miter Brands, a Pennsylvania-based company. Johannes Werner talked to one Venice worker who says he and his wife lost their jobs the same day.The newly constituted Sarasota City Commission went through a test on Monday. That test came about when Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch made a motion to take back a vote the outgoing commission made a month earlier. At issue was a downtown street the city handed over to a developer, before even seeing the developer's site plan. Ahearn-Koch wanted more discussion on how the developer's yet-to-be-known project would benefit the public. On Tuesday, a state panel unanimously approved a $1.2 billion dollar storm recovery package for Florida Power & Light. This allows FP&L, come January, to hike the average monthly electricity bill by 12 dollars. This is pretty much routine, and it will keep the corporation in the black and its investors happy. But one public advocate spoke against approval at the Public Service Commission meeting in Tallahassee. Johannes Werner spoke to Jordan Luebkemann, an attorney representing Florida Rising and Earthjustice. As the national affairs correspondent for the Nation magazine, John Nichols views national politics through a progressive lens. He will put the election in perspective during a presentation and discussion at the Fogartyville Community Center this Saturday, 7 pm. The POWER Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2024 17:47

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports SAIDI and SAIFI values in its Electric Power Annual report, which is regularly released in October each year. In the most recent report, the U.S. distribution system's average SAIDI value including all events was 335.5 minutes per customer in 2022. If major event days were excluded, which is often a worthwhile exercise to get accurate long-term trends because hurricanes and severe winter storms, for example, can skew the numbers quite dramatically in a given year, the figure dropped to 125.7 minutes per customer. Notably, this the highest SAIDI value tallied in the past decade and it continued what has effectively been a steady year-over-year decline in performance from 2013 through 2022. (2017 saw a brief improvement over 2016, but every year before and since has been worse than the previous year during the timespan covered by the report.) For comparison, in 2013, the SAIDI value was 106.1 minutes per customer. SAIFI values do not vary as noticeably as SAIDI, but still have been worsening. In 2022, the U.S. distribution system's average SAIFI value including all events was 1.4 power interruptions per customer. With major events excluded, SAIFI was 1.1 interruptions per customer in the U.S. While this was not substantially worse than values reported in other years over the past decade (every year from 2013 onward has been 1.0, except for 2016 when the value was also 1.1), it seems to confirm that the system hasn't been improving. Yet, Mike Edmonds, Chief Operating Officer for S&C Electric Company, said several things can be done to improve the reliability and resiliency of the power distribution system. “The grid looks different depending on what state you're in,” Edmonds said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “We've got great experience with Florida Power & Light [FPL],” he said. “We've helped them create a resilient grid. So, that's not only a grid that is reliable, but a grid that can actually weather the storms and all the challenges thrown at the grid.” Notably, FPL reported in March that it had provided “the most reliable electric service in company history in 2023.” Over the past two decades, FPL said its customers have realized a remarkable 45% improvement in reliability. In NextEra Energy's (the parent company of FPL) Sustainability Report 2023, the company reported FPL's SAIDI was 47.1 and SAIFI was 0.85, confirming markedly better results than the U.S. averages noted earlier. Furthermore, FPL said this is the ninth time in the past 10 years that it achieved “its best-ever reliability rating.” To better understand some of the innovative new equipment S&C Electric Company offers, Edmonds provided an example. “We have some technology that does something called ‘pulse finding,' and what Florida Power & Light does, it just lets our equipment do what it does best. If there's a problem, it'll pulse to see if the problem is there or not on the grid, if it's not, it reenergizes,” he said. “This technology is available to really change how the grid operates.” Edmonds said S&C Electric Company invented the fuse 115 years ago, and he noted fuses have served the industry well since that time. However, today there is better technology available that doesn't require a lineworker to respond to an outage to replace a fuse. “Let's take fuses off the grid and have a fuseless grid, and have much more intelligent devices that can actually re-energize,” Edmonds decreed.

At a recent stock price of $54, it has a market capitalization of $110 billion. That puts it squarely in the “boring, mega-cap utility” sector of an investor's portfolio allocation bucket. Yet there's an interesting catalyst that's powering future growth. NextEra has committed to expanding its renewable presence, aggressively building wind farms, solar plants, and battery storage facilities. On the morning of November 2, 1990, a Florida Power & Light crew was working on an electrical box located in a wealthy Miami Beach neighborhood. The neighborhood was known for its beachfront mansions, however, on this day, it would be known for something that would horrify the community. Tucked along the base of one of the mansion's exterior walls was what the electrical worker first thought was a discarded lollipop wrapper. However, upon closer inspection, the worker was aghast to find the body of a very small child, wearing a t-shirt with three lollipops on the front. Soon, this child would be known as “Baby Lollipops” throughout southern Florida. Martinez dishes on what made the change at FPL so dramatic, how bringing in non-energy professionals helped change the culture and maintaining a singular focus brought huge results. But it might be his post FPL career that Buck is most proud of as the Founder of Student ACES, a high school program in South Florida that has grown from a classroom of students nearly a decade ago to now schools from all over the state and country are interested in what Buck and his team are doing to educate kids through empowerment, education, athletics and group training. It's Thursday, September 29th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Brother Andrew, God's Bible smuggler, goes to Heaven Andrew van der Bijl, better known as Brother Andrew, died on Tuesday at the age of 94 in the Netherlands. Brother Andrew visited over 125 countries over the course of 60 years in his service to the global church. He is best known for smuggling millions of Bibles into Soviet-bloc countries, an incredible story, told in his book God's Smuggler. Brother Andrew also founded the Christian persecution watchdog group Open Doors. Today, Open Doors helps Christians in over 60 countries, distributing hundreds of thousands of Bibles and over a million Christian books daily. In a video from Open Doors, Brother Andrew urged Christians in the West to live with courage. ANDREW: “I think we in the West, now this is a personal confession, I think we are cowards. We ought to become people of guts and courage and strong convictions and don't count our lives dear unto ourselves.” The Apostle Paul said in Acts 20:24, “Nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” Consider giving a donation today of even $5 to Open Doors in honor of Brother Andrew through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Dispute over vote for parts of Ukraine to join Russia Russian-installed officials announced the results of referendums in Eastern Ukrainian regions this week. Huge majorities allegedly supported joining Russia. However, Ukraine and Western countries denounced the vote as a sham. Meanwhile, nearly 200,000 Russian nationals have fled to neighboring countries. The mass exodus of men follows President Vladimir Putin's mobilization of Russian reservists in the war against Ukraine. Faculty's attempt to censor Christian from practicing psychology The Autonomous University of Baja California in Mexico recently dismissed proceedings against a Christian student by a group of professors. At the top of his psychology class, Christian Cortez Pérez gave the commencement address for his graduation ceremony in June. Pérez shared his views on the importance of the family and the value of unborn human life.  In response, a group of leftist professors called for the school to ban Pérez from practicing psychology.  After the university denied the request, Pérez said, “Academic institutions must respect the free speech rights of all students. This is a great win for fundamental freedoms.” Ian the Horrible Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida yesterday with devastating 150 mph winds. The Category 4 hurricane is expected to cause flooding across a large area of the state as the storm heads across the Florida peninsula. Last night, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis made this remark. DeSANTIS: “It's now a strong, category three hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. Tornado watches are in effect in central and in South Florida until 5:00am. We have two radar-indicated tornadoes in Kings Point and Palm Beach, as well as possible tornadoes in Hollywood in Broward County.” As of yesterday, over two million homes and businesses had lost power, reports Fox News. Florida Power and Light President Eric Silagy said the company expects it will have to completely rebuild sections of its electrical system given Ian's massive size and powerful winds, reports the Miami Herald. One Floridian, Brennan Prill, captured some storm surge in a time-lapse video which has been seen by 1.9 million people on Twitter. In some places, the storm surge reached 18-feet high. Republicans lay out powerful “Commitment to America” U.S. House Republicans are laying out their agenda, called “Commitment to America,” if they retake the chamber in the midterm elections in November. Republicans say they plan to fight inflation, curb wasteful government spending, make America energy independent, move supply chains away from China, secure the border, expand parental choice in education, protect the lives of unborn babies, and uphold religious freedom. Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California shared one of the first steps of their Commitment to America agenda last week. MCCARTHY: “On our very first bill we're going to repeal 87,000 IRS agents! (applause)  Our job is to work for you, not go after you. Our job is to make America stronger.” 5 states have abortion on the ballot  After the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade on June 24th, five states will be considering abortion-related ballot measures. Kentucky's Amendment 2 is similar to the amendment that failed in Kansas and would clarify that Kentucky's constitution does not contain a right to abortion. Montana will be considering an act that would ensure that infants, born alive after a botched abortion, are treated as legal persons. Meanwhile, the states of Michigan, California, and Vermont will be considering ballot measures to add abortion as a so-called “right” to their state constitutions.    Americans want political leaders who are honest and courageous And finally, Arizona Christian University released a study revealing that Americans want political leaders who are honest, courageous, and hard-working. A majority of adults also said they want the government to protect religious liberty for all Americans, strengthen the economy by lowering taxes, prevent big tech companies from censoring free speech, and deport violent criminals who are not U.S. citizens. 2 Samuel 23:3 says, “The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, September 29th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Maggie Shober is a utility analyst and clean-energy advocate with the Southeast Alliance for Clean Energy. She spends a great deal of her time working the IRP processes state-by-state for the various large utilities in the region, such as Duke, Florida Power & Light,  Southern Co. and the Tennessee Valley Authority, to ensure that utility planning embraces clean-energy resources and other measures to limit carbon emissions and costs for consumers. But she clearly would prefer to see a FERC-regulated competitive wholesale power market in the region, which she believes would better allow integration of renewable energy resources by utilities in the Southeast. However, Shober notes, "There are very large, very powerful utilities in the region that are absolutely against it. And so it's going to be either somehow getting them on board, or dragging them kicking and screaming into a market." But she does see a glimmer of hope in the Carolinas, where policy makers are increasingly considering RTO development in the wake of billion-dollar boondoggles involving aborted nuclear power plant development efforts and coal ash disposal problems that have contributed to escalating electricity costs for consumers. "Where we've seen some of the biggest utility boondoggles in the region is where we've had movement on this," Shober observes. Developments at TVA are another arena in the Southeast where progress could be made toward lessening utilities' monopoly control over captive ratepayers. The city of Memphis, which operates one of the largest municipally owned utility systems in the country, is expected to make a decision by year's end whether to exit the TVA system in order to obtain cleaner and less-expensive electricity in the competitive market. Still, she is a realist, noting how TVA has been "politically protected" by "pretty powerful senators" in Congress. Support the show
