Paul Jay interviews Tom Ferguson about the debt ceiling crisis in the United States. Ferguson explains that the debate over the debt ceiling is largely theater, with both Democrats and Republicans working together to cut spending while maintaining the appearance of opposition. He criticizes the Democrats for not raising the debt ceiling earlier when they had the opportunity and suggests that their reluctance is due to their desire to secure more campaign funding for future elections. Ferguson argues that the spending cuts rolled back are not significant enough to impact inflation and proposes alternative measures, such as taxing the wealthy and reducing defense spending, to address the issue. He also discusses the influence of money in politics and the Democratic Party's efforts to weaken the progressive wing.

Looking for a way to improve your prayer life? Then join the countless numbers of people who have found inspiration, guidance, and a deep connection with God through the Book of Common Prayer. Next to the King James Bible, there is no other English book that has been as influential on Western culture as the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Countless lives have been transformed by this beautiful compilation of liturgies, psalms, creeds, and prayers. First written more than 500 years ago, the BCP has been adapted to the local custom of the churches that make up the Anglican Communion, producing a rich array of spiritual readings. While touching on the origins and development of the first English prayer books, this course focuses on the American Book of Common Prayer, 1979. It is the first in an 8-part series called, 'Introducing the Book of Common Prayer.' It is called 'An American Prayer Book, A Global Prayer Book.' And in this episode, Tom Ferguson, dean of Bexley Seabury Federation, breaks down the subject with four lectures called, The, Book, Common, and Prayer

As Britain considers how to develop an industrial strategy ‘fit for the future’, however, the decline in long-term productivity in the UK continues to puzzle managers, academics and policy-makers. Recent research has highlighted the need to examine sectoral dynamics and include questions of industrial policy in a relevant historical context. Such work has helped to focus on the specific British industries and firms where issues of competitiveness, productivity and innovation need to be studied in detail. Conceptually, however, it remains necessary to enhance our understanding of the interplay between the development of innovative capabilities and the specific governance conditions that are required to generate sustained productivity growth at firm and industrial-ecosystem level. Developing such capabilities in innovative enterprises requires the commitment of financial resources to collective and cumulative learning processes within both the firm and its ecosystem. This commitment relies on the abilities and the incentives of those executives who exercise strategic control over the corporate allocation of financial resources and returns. We thus need to consider whether strategic decision-making within UK firms over the past two decades has been influenced by destructive financialization practices. The GoFinPro project has added to existing research into issues of productivity and innovation in UK industry by conducting historical firm-level research in order to build comparative studies of firms and sectors to examine the potential influence of financialisation practices on the development of UK firms within their sectoral and national specificities. The key manufacturing sectors of pharmaceuticals and aerospace were chosen to investigate indicators that link changes in corporate governance and financial behaviour to innovative capabilities and productivity performance. The GoFinPro Conference to be held at SOAS will bring together academics, policy makers and industry experts to discuss the findings of the study. The comparison of financialisation metrics of top UK firms with those of US and other European countries will consider how such practices have influenced productivity and competitiveness and what policy measures have facilitated or encouraged their adoption. The sectoral studies highlight the specific dynamics that explain why some UK firms have become more prone to value extraction that is not justified by value creation. The implications of the findings for future UK policy on corporate governance will be subject to debate. The GoFinPro project has been funded by the Gatsby Foundation and has been carried out at SOAS University of London in collaboration with Institut Mines Telecom Business School in France. Nashelley is a member of the California Bar and graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2013. There, she focused on Resource Management and Water Law and was an active member of the Environmental Law Clinic. Before and during law school she worked in various roles, including for the San Diego Mayor’s Office under Jerry Sanders, in environmental compliance, and in litigation support. Tom holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and an MA in Politics from Edinburgh University. Top Takeaways: “The power of a learning organization comes down to compounding expertise. The more informed and the more diversity of the information that is hitting your employees, the better and more imaginative they are going to be at solving the problems in front of them.” “The older generation is getting accustomed to using technology, the current and rising generation likes technology and innovation, and the next generation will expect it.”— Clifford Chan, East Bay Municipal Utility District The culture of your organization is what people in your organization do when no one is watching. It defines the environment in which people work. It’s difficult to build. It requires a relentless drumbeat. The mission statement should be the prism through which all things are run. Treat your employees like customers. You are selling them a product all the way through. They are buying something from you. They are spending their most valuable commodity with you—their time. Show Notes: [8:02] We talk some of the (troubling) statistics related to workforce and succession in the water industry. The more informed and the more diversity of the information that is hitting your employees, the better and more imaginative they are going to be at solving the problems in front of them.” [19:44] How does Imagine H2O ensure diversity in their programming? [23:16] Sometimes you don’t know what’s going to come out of bringing a diverse group of people together, but that’s ok. The key is to create the conditions to have conversations that are differentiated and honest and emergent in the moment because that’s where the excitement happens. “Let’s see where the rabbit hole goes because that’s how you get to the new stuff.” [24:10] What are some ways we can ensure we’re sending the right people and they’re bringing back value to the organization? [29:48] Tom and Nashelley share some examples of organizations that do a good job at cultivating talent from within. Just collecting a pay check is no...

We need to learn to stop and take the time to really focus on the fundamentals. Focus! It’s so simple but so often overlooked. Everyone has an “elephant” to eat. You have to master focus in order to tackle it one bite at a time. Knowledge compounds. Imagine the potential for your organization if you made learning a priority and encouraged ongoing learning. In 1976, when The People's Pharmacy® was originally published, it was one of the first books providing drug and health information to consumers. It went on to become a number one bestseller. Since then, Joe and Terry Graedon have gone on to write 18 additional books, one of which was a medical thriller co-authored with Tom Ferguson, MD (No Deadly Drug, Pocket Books, 1992). His master's degree in pharmacology from the University of Michigan and his teaching experience with medical students prepared him for this undertaking. Terry graduated magna cum laude with an AB from Bryn Mawr College in 1969, majoring in anthropology. She completed her doctoral degree from the University of Michigan and the Graedons moved to Durham, NC. Joe served as a consultant to the Federal Trade Commission on over-the-counter drug issues from 1978 to 1983 and was on the Advisory Board for the Drug Studies Unit at UCSF from 1983 to 1989. He received the Medical Self-Care award for The People's Pharmacy in 1976. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and was elected to the rank of AAAS Fellow for "exceptional contribution to the communication of the rational use of pharmaceutical products and an understanding of health issues to the public" in 2005. Joe was conferred the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa from Long Island University in 2006 as one of the country's leading drug experts for the consumer. Joe served as an editorial advisor to Men's Health Newsletter and to Prevention Magazine. Joe is an advisory board member of the American Botanical Council (Herbalgram) and he has served as a member of the Board of Visitors, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, since 1989. The Graedons served on the Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Committee of the Duke University Health System for several years, and were founding members of the Patient Advisory Council for Duke Medicine. Money in politics -- it's not AN issue, it's THE issue, according to our guest today. In this episode of Radio Free Dylan, we talk to Tom Ferguson, Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Boston, he’s a Senior Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute, and member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for New Economic Thinking. Says Tom, "Look, everything is for sale, that’s the logic of the new Congress there.Since the ‘90s, everything’s auctioned, and that’s what the bulk of the population doesn’t understand this. The insiders know it but everybody else is still in the dark. There was some columnist in [The New York Times] who an ex-Congressman about what was going wrong in Congress. And finally the guy mentions towards the end, 'Oh, yes, there’s this terrible money problem. 'You know, look, that’s the problem. You’re selling everything." Tom concludes with a statement that we couldn't agree with more -- "You probably can’t fix much in the United States if you’re going to allow the policy to just continue to be sold in every dimension."
