This paper surveys research works in the quickly advancing field of instruction tuning (IT), a crucial technique to enhance the capabilities and controllability of large language models (LLMs). Instruction tuning refers to the process of further training LLMs on a dataset consisting of textsc{(instruction, output)} pairs in a supervised fashion, which bridges the gap between the next-word prediction objective of LLMs and the users' objective of having LLMs adhere to human instructions. In this work, we make a systematic review of the literature, including the general methodology of IT, the construction of IT datasets, the training of IT models, and applications to different modalities, domains and applications, along with an analysis on aspects that influence the outcome of IT (e.g., generation of instruction outputs, size of the instruction dataset, etc). We also review the potential pitfalls of IT along with criticism against it, along with efforts pointing out current deficiencies of existing strategies and suggest some avenues for fruitful research. Today's guest is on a mission to help small businesses and creative entrepreneurs tell better stories, find more customers, and create new revenue streams. She helps small business owners craft video content to showcase their products and services and to grow their customer base with YouTube strategies designed to meet their business needs. She left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own. She is a bilingual podcaster (English and Mandarin Chinese), the creator of Feisworld Media (a monetized YouTube channel with 17K subscribers and over 50K views per month), Feisworld Podcast (with over 200K downloads worldwide), and Feisworld Documentary Series on Amazon Prime. She also teaches how to run better Zoom Meetings and Webinars and own and monetize content on YouTube via Feisworld Academy. Dorie Clark has featured her in her best-selling book, “Entrepreneurial You” and Harvard Business Review. Please join me in welcoming Fei Wu. In this episode, we discuss: her thoughts on leadership: “Leadership means kindness. It means empathy and the willingness to learn and to fail - to fail hard and get back up again.” how she was the “creative director” for her friends growing up - including making Transformer costumes for her friends out of newspaper. her dream to create her own private school with fantastic uniforms. This came out of her disappointment with how the schools did not teach everyone to be successful but instead focused on one bad grade setting the tone for the student's future. how she came to the United States right before her senior year of high school and the shift at such an important year, academically, for her. the wonderful impact her mom has had on her being a successful artist in a world that did not support that dream. the jobs she had to take in order to be sponsored and stay in the United States and how this helped her really start focusing on the teams supporting these very large brands like Tom Ford and Burberry. the difference between active income streams vs. passive ones. how she designed websites for clients and started her business while consulting for her firm. the decision to launch her business as an LLC as a way to protect herself and her business. her biggest challenge in running her business. the myth of independence. the importance of community. how she nurtures and sustains the outer levels of her network, including the software she uses. Fei Wu is a bilingual podcaster, English, and Mandarin Chinese. She's also the creator and host of Feisworld podcast and Feisworld docuseries. Fei left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own called Feisworld LLC. With a mission to help small businesses and people tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. She leads an international mastermind group, which I am a proud member of, and creates courses for podcasters. Her story has been featured by Dorie Clark, in her best selling book called “Entrepreneurial You”, as well as the Harvard Business Review. Fei grew up on an army base in Beijing, China. At the age of 16, she moved to the US to go to high school in Maine and never looked back. She knew she wanted to be on a creative career path and that the Chinese system of education would not support her in pursuing the kinds of areas she envisioned herself engaged in for making a living. You could say she was a teenaged visionary as she knew what she wanted from a young age onward. Fei worked in the professional consulting, marketing, and advertising fields for 10 years until she started her own firm where she provides digital marketing and branding services to small businesses and entrepreneurs. In this episode we discuss: How Fei was born on an army base in Beijing, China and lived there until she came to the United States by herself at 16. One of the happiest memories of her life, when her parents worked together to create a mural on her school’s playground wall. What the transition from China to the United States was like and how Fei created a professional path to stay in the US after college. Fei’s different jobs including Business Analyst, Associate Project Manager, Project Manager, and then Entrepreneur. The value she places on making friends at work and taking the time to develop meaningful, and helpful relationships. How Fei started her docuseries and where she is going next. Fei Wu is the host of the Feisworld podcast, a documentary filmmaker, & a digital marketer. She left China to finish high school in the US, where she’s lived for almost 20 years now, but lately she’s been revisiting her China roots and supporting her artist mother, whose famous paintings illustrating Chinese literature classic The Dream of the Red Chamber made her famous and which are now getting a permanent gallery home in Qingdao. We also touch on Fei’s passion promoting palliative care for the sick & dying, which she developed after her father’s long illness and passing when she was a little girl. This topic just became highly relevant to me, too, as my own father died just this past Monday (after the interview was recorded). It’s not about agreement or being on the same page all the time, just about making sure other people know they are heard.” how her first leadership skills began when she was nine years old and started a student council at her school. how her family taught her to see leaders as people, instead of as above her, and how her empowerment paved the way for her to be a great leader. her views on work satisfaction and how she helps people discover and become who they are meant to be in the world. how she feels about networking and what she does to continually engage with other people. the value she places on always being open to grow and learn new things, why she believes vulnerability is important, and how she shows up in her mastermind groups. Fei Wu is our very first guest who has now done two full episodes. I wanted to have her back on to discuss everything she’s been up to lately related to China. In this episode we talk a lot about the dominant Chinese audio platform called XimalayaFM and Fei’s upcoming efforts to help bridge the gap for international podcasters and consumers to use and enjoy it. Since Fei is a Chinese person who speaks the language but has lived more than half her life in the US and has run a successful English-language show for 3.5 years now, I think she’s pretty much an ideal person to help open that platform up to a more international audience. Ever dreamt of starting a podcast? Curious if you could make a living doing it? Fei Wu is the creator and host of Feisworld Podcast, which celebrates the stories of unsung heroes and self-made artists. Her podcast attracts 50,000 downloads and listeners from 40 countries. In 2014, Fei launched FeisWorld Podcast, not knowing where the future would lead her. Starting out in her simple studio set up, she interviewed people who interested her, such as performing artists from Cirque du Soleil and Broadway, social service people, and the LGBTQ Community. Her audience quickly grew beyond friends and family and attracted people who wanted to work with Fei as a freelance marketer. In 2016, Fei left her lucrative job in advertising and built a company of her own, Feisworld LLC, to help others tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. As Fei points out, everyone has a story you just need to ask the right questions. In our conversation today, Fei shares her journey and discoveries along the way. Clear that success in podcasting is more than downloads or sponsorship dollars to her, Fei dispels common myths that get in the way of great people launching podcasts. Yes you can make a living podcasting, and, as Fei explains, you don't need to have millions of downloads to do it. A casual, open conversation between two podcast hosts, we hope this episode inspires and educates you to follow your dream and embrace the process. Key Takeaways Everyone has a story you just need to ask the right questions. Choose guests that you are curious to learn more about. Define what success looks like for you, realizing that 40,000 downloads translates to approximately $250 in sponsorship dollars, and most sponsors are looking for a minimum of 100,000 downloads per month. So if you are gauging your podcast success on downloads or money, you will likely be disappointed. People won't listen just because you post an episode. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and share it with others. Think and plan strategically but the most important thing is to SHIP (launch). To find your confidence, refer back to your favorite show and listen/watch their first episode – compare where they started to where they are now. When you find yourself struggling with doubt or fatigue, remind yourself what it's all for. Terri talks to Fei Wu about how she researched coming to the US from China to study when she was a teenager and picked a school in Fryeburg, Maine so she could play ice hockey. Fei talks about launching her podcast in 2014 in order to have something of her own that didn’t require multiple rounds of client approval. She looks forward to using her platform to bring people together to make the world a better place. Who is Fei Wu? Fei Wu is from Beijing, China and came to the US in her teens to study in Fryeburg, Maine. Fei left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own called Feisworld, LLC, with a mission to help small businesses and people tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. Fei is the creator and host of Feisworld Podcast which has listeners from over 40 countries. Show Highlights Fei tells the story about how she came from China to study in the US and how she looked for a school that had ice hockey and ended up in Fryeburg, Maine. Terri shares her story about how first experienced ice hockey at a Give Hockey a Try Day last year. Terri talks about exchanging houses with families in France and how valuable the experience was in terms of being forced to adapt to a different culture and language in developing empathy. Fei teaches art at a local high school and encourages the kids to travel and get exposed to other languages and cultures. Fei talks about how she was excited to come to school in the US and didn’t think she was brave or courageous at the time. Fei launched her podcast in October 2014 because she wanted to create something on her own without requiring approval from anyone else. She was influenced by Krista Tippett and her podcast On Being. Fei loves being able to learn about other people through her interviews with people on her podcast. Terri likes that she can be ‘nosy’ when she interviews people for her podcast. Fei learned how to actively listen as a podcaster which was somewhat in contrast to the way she was raised in China. Being an active listener is so important when interviewing for podcasts because it brings the listeners along with the process. Fei talks about how she learned to use her podcast as a platform to gain new consulting clients. Dorie Clark encouraged her to write an eBook about this (which is available on Fei’s website). She is seen as someone who delivers and is trustworthy. For Fei, 2018 will define who she is and who she will be in terms of her consulting work. She now chooses who she works with and doesn’t feel the need to say yes to everyone. If Fei could wave a magic wand, she would love to use her platform to bring people together. Terri’s Key Takeaway Empathy is the key to reducing the divisiveness in the world. Hey guys! This installment marks my 21st episode of VideoFuzzy, my twice-monthly progress report on archiving more than 2,700 VHS transfers and digital recordings. First, thank you to podcaster Fei Wu for sharing my comments along with those of a couple dozen other podcasters on her Fei's World Podcast mini-episode 140, "How to Embrace the Plateau as a Podcaster" (link) For this one I'm joined by writer Kymn Files to discuss "quarterlife," both her stage version and NBC's. I break into a new binder of DVDs in my current collection and find a Prairie Musicians feature on singer-songwriter Brenda Weiler. And in what I've been watching, "The Magicians," "Working Buddies," I pick up the first season finale of "Claws," and some realizations about "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace." Happy viewing!

What's more important - financial or spiritual independence? https://www.feisworld.com/blog/financial-vs-spiritual-independence To answer this question, I want to share a few personal stories from my childhood (in Beijing, China) to my transition as a high school student in the US. What is it like to grow up as a woman in the 21st Century? How do career, womanhood, motherhood intersect? How and when do we learn our own set of personal values? Before we dive in, I want to clarify that "spiritual" here does not refer to religion, rather we are discussing the human spirit. Thank you for joining me on Feisworld Mini - a series of 5-10 mins episodes that share thoughts and observations from podcast host Fei Wu. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support
Fei Wu created Feisworld Podcast to delve into the meanings of our lives among extraordinary people you can relate to such as artists, musicians, authors, doctors and more. In 2016, Fei founded her company Feisworld Inc. to help businesses grow and showcase people's stories and skills via digital platforms. It's hard to believe Fei was too scared to do anything at one point because of what others might think. Podcasting helped gain the confidence she had inside of her to break out and live the life she has today. Tune in to the episode to hear Fei's story. Check out thetaoofselfconfidence.com for show notes of Fei's episode, Fei's website, resources, gifts and so much more.

After announcing the first 1,000 downloads of the feisworld podcast in January 2015, a number of friends, guests and listeners reached out to me via Facebook, Twitter, emails and phone calls. They congratulated me on this significant milestone and urged me to continue my journey as a podcaster. Caleb Brown, the first guest on the feisworld podcast, had requested to have me interviewed on my own show. To my surprise, he was not the only one and I had tabled this request for weeks before releasing this episode. Jade Longstaff, a colleague, mentioned my show in her message on Facebook of being aspired to embraced her inner artist-self. Julia Holloway, a guest from Ep. 13, had decided to create her own podcast this year. Ralph Peterson Jr. from Ep 14 and 15 has been using our podcast as part of his teaching materials at the Berklee School of Music. I never felt more honored and blessed in my life. How did I get there and why did start a podcast with no prior background in audio engineering, nor do I have a trained voice? This interview about me, my life, became an opportunity to ask myself these questions. Three months after the release of the feisworld podcast, I have welcomed nearly 2,000 downloads and listeners from 40 countries.
