On the Schmooze Podcast: Leadership | Strategic Networking | Relationship Building

Today's guest is on a mission to help small businesses and creative entrepreneurs tell better stories, find more customers, and create new revenue streams. She helps small business owners craft video content to showcase their products and services and to grow their customer base with YouTube strategies designed to meet their business needs. She left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own. She is a bilingual podcaster (English and Mandarin Chinese), the creator of Feisworld Media (a monetized YouTube channel with 17K subscribers and over 50K views per month), Feisworld Podcast (with over 200K downloads worldwide), and Feisworld Documentary Series on Amazon Prime. She also teaches how to run better Zoom Meetings and Webinars and own and monetize content on YouTube via Feisworld Academy. Dorie Clark has featured her in her best-selling book, “Entrepreneurial You” and Harvard Business Review. Please join me in welcoming Fei Wu. In this episode, we discuss: her thoughts on leadership: “Leadership means kindness. It means empathy and the willingness to learn and to fail - to fail hard and get back up again.” how she was the “creative director” for her friends growing up - including making Transformer costumes for her friends out of newspaper. her dream to create her own private school with fantastic uniforms. This came out of her disappointment with how the schools did not teach everyone to be successful but instead focused on one bad grade setting the tone for the student's future. how she came to the United States right before her senior year of high school and the shift at such an important year, academically, for her. the wonderful impact her mom has had on her being a successful artist in a world that did not support that dream. the jobs she had to take in order to be sponsored and stay in the United States and how this helped her really start focusing on the teams supporting these very large brands like Tom Ford and Burberry. the difference between active income streams vs. passive ones. how she designed websites for clients and started her business while consulting for her firm. the decision to launch her business as an LLC as a way to protect herself and her business. her biggest challenge in running her business. the myth of independence. the importance of community. how she nurtures and sustains the outer levels of her network, including the software she uses. Bryan Falchuk is an author, speaker, and life coach. He was introduced to me through Michael O’Brien who appeared on an earlier episode of our show. As soon as Bryan and I met in person, we discovered many more common friends we shared right here in Boston, Massachusetts. If you are listening to this and you are an up and coming influencer, an author who is seeking to be interviewed by on podcasts, there’s one important tip and trick I learned from Bryan. He created an interview prep document (PDF) that became very handy for hosts who don’t know much about him, yet. Hence, you should create something similar to this document, where you include your photos, suggested questions, bio, etc. Podcasters love to see that you’ve done your homework! Episode Cheatsheet & Why You Should Listen In this episode, Bryan Falchuk and I talked about: Facing major adversities and learned some hard lessons in his early years Overcoming obesity with successful weight loss/weight management Running marathons and staying active for life Career struggles before becoming finding his path as CXO (Chief Experience Offer) Managing life-threating illness and nearly lost his wife while his son was an infant Developing a unique approach to inspire others to live a fulfilling and happy life To learn more about Bryan and follow the steps he has talked about on the show, check out this special landing page he prepared just for Feisworld Podcast listeners: https://bryanfalchuk.com/fei Bryan has as new book coming out in 2019 Bryan’s second book, The 50 75 100 Solution, is being written right now, and is focused on helping you solve dysfunction in all relationships you face in life, whether with your significant other, coworkers, friends, family or others. What would you do if you just made 15 million dollars? Our guest Erik Bergman did just that. Two years ago, his first company went public. He made 15 million dollars, in one day, on his 28th birthday. Erik Bergman is now 31, lives and works in Malta. Born and raised in Sweden, he comes from an ordinary family. His parents managed to send him to a fancy private school. Unfortunately, he always felt like “the poor kid” in a place where he didn’t belong. That experience that had a big impact on his self-esteem and gave him the drive to make money, a lot of it. In this episode, Erik talks to us about: How he was able to make 15 million dollars and how it impacted his behaviors towards personal and professional life Why he started Great.com (and how much he paid for this crazy rare domain) His origin stories growing up in Sweden His philanthropic endeavors and where he has contributed his money and time How you can make the most of your money and effort working for nonprofit And an unrelated note - sex and relationship After Erik made his fortune, he helped build a school in Ghana (in western Africa). After that trip, he started to plan his future and figure out the best way to contribute. So he started engaging in various projects and he started reading up on things. Erik knows deep down and there’s something he does best which is making money. His new plan and possibly a project of a lifetime is to make money, and give everything away. This is the story of Great.com, a controversial charity about making money, and giving it away. Beside money, making the world a better place, Erik also has researched and read quite a bit about sex and relationship. He shared his own stories and a list of incredible resources. People don’t talk about sex, not even in private relationships. Erik felt that he had a lot to learn. It comes down to one simple thing: How can we learn to truly love and respect ourselves? Please join Erik Bergman and me on the Feisworld Podcast today. And hope you’ll share this conversation with one more person. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

About Our Guest In his own words: “For more than thirty years, I’ve been trying to turn on lights, inspire people and teach them how to level up.” His blog has been appearing daily for more than a decade. I’ve spent most of his professional life as a writer and published 19 bestselling books. More than 60,000 people have taken his online courses (including me). Over the past 15 years, I had many ups and downs in my life and the one guru I kept turning to without ever meeting in person was Seth Godin. As soon as I’m blocked, having serious doubts, I will pick up a book by Seth Godin, and it almost didn’t matter which one I chose.  Years after I discovered Seth and his work, I found myself joining his altMBA (session #8) in early 2017, which was quite early on and friended people I still speak with every single week. In many ways, Seth is a teacher who’ll always be incomparable and irreplaceable. Turns out, it’s the case with most people who follow his work. In 2018, I decided to make Feisworld’s first docuseries called “Live Your Art”, the intention behind doing all of that work is to show other people - especially first-generation immigrants, workers, stdents - that they can do it too! Make their own film, tell their stories, look awkward on screen, and learn new things and feel like an idiot and proud of themselves at the same time. That's really what I'm going for. Among 12 guests who appeared in our docuseries, Seth Godin was one of them. Seth was very kind to accept our invitation. My production team and I drove from NYC to Hastings on Hudson to interview Seth. Since we chose to use a small segment of each of the recordings, my podcast producer German and I thought, how wonderful it’ll be to share the entire conversation with Seth on Feisworld Podcast, in episode 200. Seth’s favorite one-liner: Go, make a ruckus! My favorite of his: Embrace emotional labor, dance with fear. Chinwe graduated from the City College of New York with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and received her JD from Harvard Law School. Today, she works for Citi as the Managing Director - Chief Anti-Bribery & Corruption Officer. With a husband, three children and a demanding executive job, Chinwe talks to me about the challenge and excitement of being a woman - or more specifically - an immigrant woman in the modern world. Together we are trying to redefine our roles as women in society. What are the roles we have today? How can we kinder to ourselves? How do we better support each other? Chinwe created her website to inspire immigrant women on their leadership journeys. These women leaders have come to the United States from all around the world. Chinwe calls them “American Dream Queens,” who not here in the United States to blend in, but to shine through. The glass ceiling for immigrant women trying to breakthrough leadership roles in America is real, but hearing these stories firsthand instill hope among us that there’s still a place for women to thrive and succeed. I hope to see more immigrant women in such positions and willing to share their journey. If you know someone on this trajectory, with a big heart, please help refer them to the Feisworld Podcast! When I started Feisworld Podcast in 2014, I knew very little about audio production, but I did know a thing or two about growing an audience (thanks to 12 years of working as a digital producer).  In recent conversations with other podcasters, I casually unveiled a tactic I’ve been using since the inception of Feisworld to increase my podcast awareness and engagement.  Most people have not heard of me, and I love interviewing unsung heroes, "getting the word out" isn't trivial.  I hate gimmicks, and growing downloads alone didn't appeal to me. This approach below is for those who of you who want to grow your podcast in the long run. There's no quick fix.  The one pre-requisite is that you need to have guests on the show to maximize impacts.  Alternatively, if you are a one-man show but you discuss other people and topics, I can see some methods work in the same manner. Give them a shot and please let me know your feedback below in the comments area.  What’s the one hidden gem? Simple: You need to proactively reach out to organizations, schools, groups, people and TELL them about the episode when it comes out.  Listen and read the blog: https://www.feisworld.com/blog/one-hidden-gem-to-increase-podcast-engagement-with-zero-budget --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

Ever dreamt of starting a podcast? Curious if you could make a living doing it? Fei Wu is the creator and host of Feisworld Podcast, which celebrates the stories of unsung heroes and self-made artists. Her podcast attracts 50,000 downloads and listeners from 40 countries. In 2014, Fei launched FeisWorld Podcast, not knowing where the future would lead her. Starting out in her simple studio set up, she interviewed people who interested her, such as performing artists from Cirque du Soleil and Broadway, social service people, and the LGBTQ Community. Her audience quickly grew beyond friends and family and attracted people who wanted to work with Fei as a freelance marketer. In 2016, Fei left her lucrative job in advertising and built a company of her own, Feisworld LLC, to help others tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. As Fei points out, everyone has a story you just need to ask the right questions. In our conversation today, Fei shares her journey and discoveries along the way. Clear that success in podcasting is more than downloads or sponsorship dollars to her, Fei dispels common myths that get in the way of great people launching podcasts. Yes you can make a living podcasting, and, as Fei explains, you don't need to have millions of downloads to do it. A casual, open conversation between two podcast hosts, we hope this episode inspires and educates you to follow your dream and embrace the process. Key Takeaways Everyone has a story you just need to ask the right questions. Choose guests that you are curious to learn more about.   Define what success looks like for you, realizing that 40,000 downloads translates to approximately $250 in sponsorship dollars, and most sponsors are looking for a minimum of 100,000 downloads per month. So if you are gauging your podcast success on downloads or money, you will likely be disappointed. People won't listen just because you post an episode. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and share it with others. Think and plan strategically but the most important thing is to SHIP (launch). To find your confidence, refer back to your favorite show and listen/watch their first episode – compare where they started to where they are now. When you find yourself struggling with doubt or fatigue, remind yourself what it's all for. She looks forward to using her platform to bring people together to make the world a better place.   Who is Fei Wu? Fei Wu is from Beijing, China and came to the US in her teens to study in Fryeburg, Maine. Fei left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own called Feisworld, LLC, with a mission to help small businesses and people tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. Fei is the creator and host of Feisworld Podcast which has listeners from over 40 countries.   Show Highlights Fei tells the story about how she came from China to study in the US and how she looked for a school that had ice hockey and ended up in Fryeburg, Maine. Terri shares her story about how first experienced ice hockey at a Give Hockey a Try Day last year. Terri talks about exchanging houses with families in France and how valuable the experience was in terms of being forced to adapt to a different culture and language in developing empathy. Fei teaches art at a local high school and encourages the kids to travel and get exposed to other languages and cultures. Fei talks about how she was excited to come to school in the US and didn’t think she was brave or courageous at the time. Fei launched her podcast in October 2014 because she wanted to create something on her own without requiring approval from anyone else. She was influenced by Krista Tippett and her podcast On Being. Fei loves being able to learn about other people through her interviews with people on her podcast. Terri likes that she can be ‘nosy’ when she interviews people for her podcast. Fei learned how to actively listen as a podcaster which was somewhat in contrast to the way she was raised in China. Being an active listener is so important when interviewing for podcasts because it brings the listeners along with the process. Fei talks about how she learned to use her podcast as a platform to gain new consulting clients. Dorie Clark encouraged her to write an eBook about this (which is available on Fei’s website). She is seen as someone who delivers and is trustworthy. For Fei, 2018 will define who she is and who she will be in terms of her consulting work. She now chooses who she works with and doesn’t feel the need to say yes to everyone. If Fei could wave a magic wand, she would love to use her platform to bring people together.   Terri’s Key Takeaway Empathy is the key to reducing the divisiveness in the world.   References in the Podcast Fei’s website: https://www.feisworld.com/ Fei’s World podcast: https://www.feisworld.com/podcast/ Make More Marbles: http://makemoremarbles.com/ Fei’s eBook series: https://www.feisworld.com/ebooks/ On Being podcast: https://onbeing.org/ Dorie Clark: http://www.dorieclark.com/ Brene Brown: https://brenebrown.com/videos/ Unraveling Pink: https://unravelingpink.com/ Unraveling Pink podcasts on women ally moments: https://unravelingpink.com/2018/03/01/happy-womens-history-month/#more-713   Contact Fei can be reached through her website https://www.feisworld.com/ or on Twitter @feisworld or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/feisworld/ or on Instagram @feisworld. The audience was naturally and completely captivated by his words, his humor, and his incredible talent of improvising with children ages 5-9 on stage. To my surprise, David isn't a trained ringmaster, but a professional magician. He has been featured on ABC's Champions of Magic, where he appeared with Princess Stephanie as he performed his miracles at different locations in and around Monaco. Working as a magician is a career very few people can pull off. How did David become a magician and sustain a career for decades? Anne is an academic pioneer who founded the original digital fine arts programs at Brown University and The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in the 1990s. In her studio practice, Anne uses custom software to transform source footage—captured by her during multi-sensory experiences such as walking through an open-air flower market in Bangkok, dangling from a helicopter over downtown Dubai—into kaleidoscopic, algorithmically manipulated Modern Landscapes. Her work, Miami Marbles will mark the entrance to the annual contemporary exhibition at PULSE Miami Beach  (December 1-4, 2016). Anne's work is housed in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, NY; the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence. Anne's work and her ambition as an artist and an an educator extends much beyond herself.  She has dedicated so much of her career to help young and experienced artists excel in their art careers. She has given talks and presentations at art institutions in the US and around the world. She spent six years working on a book called The Computer in the Visual Arts.   Gordon Lau recently graduated from NYU with a degree in philosophy. At age five, I took Gordon skating for the first time. He furiously got up after after each fall and didn't want to leave for hours. At age ten, he won a Ping Pong Tournament in Hong Kong, played Rugby for the Hong Kong National Junior Team against some of the most competitive leagues in the world. He's a skateboarder who self started several skate camps to help others learn. Gordon and his family moved to Toronto when he was three. He didn't speak any English and was enrolled in a Montessori School.  Just before middle school, his family moved back to Hong Kong, when Gordon experienced reverse cultural shock. He then enrolled in the brutally competitive Hong Kong International School (HKIS) through high school. What will you get out of this interview? Beyond my own reflections for Gordon's upbringing and recent development, his story isn't unusual for millennials today. Many children grow up in multiple continents as a result of their parents jobs, choice of immigration. I find it interesting and often educational to connect with people like them. They have all faced and overcome fears and struggles at an early age. When you have to move around constantly as a kid, the lost of friendship and familiarity of the life you once had can be difficult to manage. People who experience these transitions early in life are often more calm and resourceful as they get older. Feisworld Podcast has tapped into an interesting theme about change, because all of us go through changes frequently. Very few of them are unnoticeable. Many are  uncomfortable and intimidating, or even scary at times. We are not alone in this most human experience. Hearing other people's stories on Feisworld has painted a vivid picture for me to understand just that. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

SHOW NOTES:  5:30 How does Chris create a playful and relaxing atmosphere for teaching negotiation? 7:15 Why is it a bad idea to wait for “yes” or “you are right” during a conversation? 9:00 “Do you have a few minutes to chat?” turns out to be a terrible pitch when you are trying to get people’s attention and respect their time. 13:00 Common negotiation mistakes people make but are not aware of. 14:45 Difference in negotiation between men and women (and why some answers to this questions could be misleading) 19:15: How does Chris encourage people to learn negotiation? (Comfort is the biggest barrier, not complexity) 22:00 How can people practice negotiation on a daily basis? 27:30 Is it possible to identify and avoid harmful people who are using negotiation strategies for the evil, not the good? 30:30 Origin stories: What was Chris like as a 10-year old boy? 34:30 Significant changes Chris has noticed when transitioning from a FBI agent, to a professor, to the CEO of his own business. 41:30 How did Chris calm himself down during stressful and (often) dangerous situations? 47:15 How does Chris “get out of his own way”? (We are often our own worst enemies and obstacles) 49:30 People & teachers Chris chooses to follow and learn from DO YOU ENJOY THIS EPISODE? Meet Jordan Harbinger (@TheArtofCharm), show host for an iTunes Top 50 podcast called The Art of Charm (AoC). AoC also offers in-person training to help people become more charismatic in any situation, master their careers by becoming “super-connectors" and revamp their love lives and intimate relationships with confidence. The AoC podcast receives over 2 million downloads per months, with over 440+ episodes featuring guests such as Tim Ferriss, Seth Godin, Ramit Sethi and Noah Kagan. The AoC's in-person training is so popular that attendees need to register months in advance. The residential program is currently only open to men.  Jordan helps answer as to why this decision is necessary to help people achieve their goals. As you can imagine, Jordan is a public figure.  He is known as more of "a sung hero" on Feisworld Podcast. Why did we choose Jordan? We wanted to know what it's like to run a popular brand, a podcast and a training program in the eyes of the public. Key Discussion Points with Jordan: Being famous isn't always easy. How does Jordan deal with negative feedback and (even) "hate mails"? As a podcaster, I struggle with some of my interviews, especially under the circumstance that I'm speaking with a guest for the first time. What's Jordan's advice on managing one's anxiety? What Jordan means by "rescuing yourself" and why it's a crucial skill to have (for anyone) What was the early days like at the AoC, before millions of downloads, interviewing world-class leaders, businessmen about their hopes and dreams? How did Jordan start his passion project? How/When did it transition into a legacy business? What are some of the lessons Jordan could pass onto us  podcasters and entrepreneurs My favorite segment: what was Jordan like when he was 10 years old? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

Joining me on the Feisworld Podcast today is Jordan Clayton, an SVP of UX (User Experience) at Arnold Worldwide. UX has become increasingly popular over the years across all the industries (technology, marketing, medicine and beyond), but most schools still haven’t figured out a systematic and effective way to help students learn more and be properly trained on UX. As a result, many young, ambitious, creative souls find it challenging to find a UX position they qualify for. This podcast isn’t a your crash course to UX, but a lesson with deep insights to how a UX designer thinks, what he looks for in hiring, what prototyping is. Jordan offers his point of view, lessons learned and interplays through his unique career path. Jordan also argues that UX isn't just about making things useful and usable, but more fun, compelling, inspiring and more emotionally engaging as well. Beyond UX, Jordan is known as a well-dressed charismatic leader in the office. How does he achieve this kind of credibility? The answers live in his cross-disciplinary vision to design, fashion and music. And Jordan appreciates small things life, every day. I hope you enjoy this conversation and thank you so much for choosing to spend your time with us. I feel very privileged to be able to do this. To learn more about Jordan, connect with him on LinkedIn. He admits that he's most actively on Twitter (@jordan001). Today on the Feisworld Podcast, you will meet Mariann Bucina Roca, an Executive Director from the Friends of Boston's Homeless (FOBH).    Did you know that Boston was a pioneer in addressing homeless needs? As part of this movement, FOBH played a significant part in helping homeless individuals transition from the streets and shelters to lead stable independent lives. One main focus for FOBH is to remove the final barriers during transitions that city and state programs often don’t have the means to cover.    I invited Mariann, who has devoted 20 years of her life to speak about a variety of programs offered by FOBH in the City of Boston including: Housing First, vocational training, workforce development, adult education, employment services,  transitional and permanent affordable housing, as well as the emergency shelters.    In the past 5 years, I’ve attended every single one of FOBH's annual event. Thanks to Matt Lindley, a Board Member at FOBH, and a lifelong friend and mentor.   In addition to FOBH, I hope you will learn something about Mariann, whose journey in helping not-for-profit organizations started long before FOBH. Her earliest memory goes back to when she was just a little girl.   Mariann didn't choose an easy or a conventional path. During our conversation, she speaks to her joy and challenges, and reasons behind why she continues to fuel her passion with creativity and devotion.    --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support
