Ben is a TV writer from Lexington, MA. Writing wasn't always the plan. First it was 'professional basketball player' (too short), then 'doctor' (too hard), then 'diplomat' (took a bad class in college and moved on, perhaps too quickly), and finally 'perpetual graduate student' (too expensive). Writing and comedy were always passions though; he just didn't realize they could be combined into an actual job until mid-college. Since moving to LA in 2012, he's worked on a range of shows -- spanning network, cable, and streaming. Most recently he served as a Co-EP on Hulu's "Only Murders In The Building." He's also written and directed a short film, "Meet Cute." Outside of writing, Ben enjoys rock climbing, sports, role-playing games, and relaxing with his girlfriend and their two cats (Fox and Scully). Happy Chinese New Year! In the past few days, I've received a lot of greetings from the East and the West to celebrate Chinese New Year, an important tradition that has become more well known outside of China. Michael Leckie's new book “The Heart of Transformation” released on July 3rd (UK and ROW), July 27th, 2021 (US) The Heart of Transformation breaks this cycle by suggesting that the pace and complexity of change is too great and too complex to be addressed by a single change effort or transformation. The answer lies in the organization's greatest asset: its people. In the face of complexity, it is the organization's people and their ability to adapt and learn that are the true engine of organizational change. This episode answer questions such as: >> How transformation actually happens (or doesn't happen) in a corporate environment >> How to transition from corporate to entrepreneurship (Michael was a corporate executive before going out on his own in 2019) >> What it's like to publish a book with a publisher >> How to win a signed copy of this book and meet Michael (a really cool boss up close and personal) Learn more about Feisworld and what we do: https://www.feisworld.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

Jeremy Ten is a Canadian figure skater, a three-time Canadian national medallist (silver in 2015, bronze in 2009 and 2012). He competed in the free skate at seven ISU Championships. Jeremy strikes me as someone who’s highly skilled and yet incredibly humble. After being interviewed by at least 5-6 reporters just before our conversation, he pleasantly accepted my invite to join Feisworld as part of a Facebook Live series, where I interview performers as I travel with my partner Adam Leffert. AXEL is a different kind of Cirque show. After CRYSTAL (the very first ice show from Cirque), AXEL became the second success story of attempting something so out of the ordinary for Cirque. Artistic director Shana Carroll has been interviewed on Feisworld once before when CRYSTAL was in production. Jeremy and I talked about AXEL, what it’s like to be a traveling artist at the age of 30, transitioning from a professional, competing skater to a circus performer, plus Jeremy’s skincare routine that keeps him looking young and refreshed. Fei Wu is a bilingual podcaster, English, and Mandarin Chinese. She's also the creator and host of Feisworld podcast and Feisworld docuseries. Fei left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own called Feisworld LLC. With a mission to help small businesses and people tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. She leads an international mastermind group, which I am a proud member of, and creates courses for podcasters. Her story has been featured by Dorie Clark, in her best selling book called “Entrepreneurial You”, as well as the Harvard Business Review. Fei grew up on an army base in Beijing, China. At the age of 16, she moved to the US to go to high school in Maine and never looked back. She knew she wanted to be on a creative career path and that the Chinese system of education would not support her in pursuing the kinds of areas she envisioned herself engaged in for making a living. You could say she was a teenaged visionary as she knew what she wanted from a young age onward. Fei worked in the professional consulting, marketing, and advertising fields for 10 years until she started her own firm where she provides digital marketing and branding services to small businesses and entrepreneurs. In this episode we discuss: How Fei was born on an army base in Beijing, China and lived there until she came to the United States by herself at 16. One of the happiest memories of her life, when her parents worked together to create a mural on her school’s playground wall. What the transition from China to the United States was like and how Fei created a professional path to stay in the US after college. Fei’s different jobs including Business Analyst, Associate Project Manager, Project Manager, and then Entrepreneur. The value she places on making friends at work and taking the time to develop meaningful, and helpful relationships. How Fei started her docuseries and where she is going next. Sabine van Rensburg (@circusbean) and Brin Schoellkopf (@brin_schoellkopf) are two circus artists currently working in the show Passagers from 7 Fingers. We met these two talented young artists through the artistic director of Passagers from 7 Fingers, Shana Caroll, who appeared in an earlier episode of Feisworld. Passagers (or Passengers in English) is opening in Boston on September 25th, 2019 and leaving the city on October 13th, 2019. Make sure to check out the show with your friends and family! Sabine, originally from South Africa, is an aerial silk artist. Her parents founded a circus school where she learned to perform as a circus artist, the rest is history. Sabine embraced the opportunity before enrolling in the Montreal Circus School. Soon after graduation, she found herself busy working for 7 Fingers. Brin was born and raised in Vermont, a jack of all trades type of Circus artist, he’s got a few impressive skills under his belt. He also works as a visual artist and videographer to promote other artists like himself. The National Circus School in Montreal has prepared generations of artists for a very high level of achievement. Sabine and Brin share their schooling experience studying as college students inside this unique institution that is unlike any other college experience you’ve heard. In this episode, we give you the insider’s view into the life of young circus artists, the relationships they built, how they navigate work, life, travel and beyond. Fei Wu is the host of the Feisworld podcast, a documentary filmmaker, & a digital marketer. She left China to finish high school in the US, where she’s lived for almost 20 years now, but lately she’s been revisiting her China roots and supporting her artist mother, whose famous paintings illustrating Chinese literature classic The Dream of the Red Chamber made her famous and which are now getting a permanent gallery home in Qingdao. We also touch on Fei’s passion promoting palliative care for the sick & dying, which she developed after her father’s long illness and passing when she was a little girl. This topic just became highly relevant to me, too, as my own father died just this past Monday (after the interview was recorded). The first 10 minutes of the show is me talking about that, but the interview with Fei is fun, enlightening, fresh, and optimistic about the power of art to transform. About Our Guests Andrew, Kevin and Gasya Atherton are a family of circus artists working at Cirque du Soleil. After witnessing Varekai in the summer of 2015, I immediately reached out to identical twin brothers, Andrew and Kevin to join me on Feisworld. Since then, we’ve completed two projects together including the buildout of their website AthertonTwins.com (launched in 2015), and their brand new workout series called 10 for 10 (launched in 2018), the first gymnastics and circus-inspired workout series for busy professionals on the go. All you need is your own body weight, no partner, no equipment. Andrew and Kevin Atherton were professional gymnasts in Britain before joining Cirque du Soleil at the age of 24. 18 years later, they have performed in major Cirque shows (Varekai, Zarkana, IRIS, Paramour) around the world, often as headliners with their one of a kind aerial strap performance. Gasya Atherton is a Cirque hand-balancer, who has become an overnight internet sensation when she shared her workout videos with her children, Kamali and Kaysen, in early 2017. Since then Gasya has built a tribe of 200,000+ engaging fans, including many inspired parents, on her Instagram page. Please enjoy this very special episode of the show, and visit https://www.crazyinagoodway.com/knew-resources for links and more.

Tammy Gooler Loeb is a Career and Executive Coach. We’ve had a few seasoned coaches on the show so far, but they are all quite different in terms of their backgrounds, the profiles of their customers, and generally how they go about running their business. Tammy isn’t just a coach, she’s also part of a thriving podcaster community with me called altPodcasters, started by Feisworld since October 2014. I’m thrilled to see her launching her show as of December 2018 called Work from the Inside Out. This episode is for you if you are: Dissatisfied with your role or level Frustrated with your job search Challenged to think objectively or create a career plan Restricted by a manager or company that impede your growth Interested in changing career or industry As a Career Coach, Tammy is able to speak to these pain points many people are experiencing today across different industries. About Our Guest In his own words: “For more than thirty years, I’ve been trying to turn on lights, inspire people and teach them how to level up.” His blog has been appearing daily for more than a decade. I’ve spent most of his professional life as a writer and published 19 bestselling books. More than 60,000 people have taken his online courses (including me). Over the past 15 years, I had many ups and downs in my life and the one guru I kept turning to without ever meeting in person was Seth Godin. As soon as I’m blocked, having serious doubts, I will pick up a book by Seth Godin, and it almost didn’t matter which one I chose. Years after I discovered Seth and his work, I found myself joining his altMBA (session #8) in early 2017, which was quite early on and friended people I still speak with every single week. In many ways, Seth is a teacher who’ll always be incomparable and irreplaceable. Turns out, it’s the case with most people who follow his work. In 2018, I decided to make Feisworld’s first docuseries called “Live Your Art”, the intention behind doing all of that work is to show other people - especially first-generation immigrants, workers, stdents - that they can do it too! Make their own film, tell their stories, look awkward on screen, and learn new things and feel like an idiot and proud of themselves at the same time. That's really what I'm going for. Among 12 guests who appeared in our docuseries, Seth Godin was one of them. Seth was very kind to accept our invitation. My production team and I drove from NYC to Hastings on Hudson to interview Seth. Since we chose to use a small segment of each of the recordings, my podcast producer German and I thought, how wonderful it’ll be to share the entire conversation with Seth on Feisworld Podcast, in episode 200. Seth’s favorite one-liner: Go, make a ruckus! My favorite of his: Embrace emotional labor, dance with fear. You know how much we love sharing amazing people on the Unbreakable Success Podcast, and Few Wu is certainly of the most amazing gems in our history. Fei is the amazing host of Feisworld Podcast, a documentary filmmaker whose 2019 docuseries features some of the most innovative and creative heroes in America, including Seth Godin, Dorie Clark, Sarah Cooper, Bisila Bokoko, Mick Ebeling, Barry Alexander, Cosmo Buono, Chris Voss, Gasya Akhmetova-Atherton, Andrew Atherton, and Kevin Atherton. She's also an extraordinary business coach who can teach you how to make money as a podcaster, but today, we're sharing a joint episode between Feisworld and Unbreakable Success. Fei and I have turned this into what I think you'll agree is one of the best episodes of Unbreakable Success so far. Discover our journey of entrepreneurship and our perspective on the path to confidence. Thanks to Fei, you'll also discover how I manage to leverage some of the critical skills I learned as a police / SWAT officer, and make them applicable the world of motivational leadership speaking, coaching, business, and entrepreneurship. PLEASE reach out to Fei at feisworld.com to send her some sincere love and gratitude for being an amazing guest and interviewer for the Unbreakable Success family in this episode. Two years ago, my beloved mentor Dorie Clark and I had coffee near the financial district in New York City. I told her how my podcast was the trigger for my business, Feisworld. I left my full-time job in advertising and began freelancing as a digital producer for companies and people. Many of them met me through the podcast as guests, friends of guests, and even listeners. She urged me to write a blog post, and I came up with a name I was quite proud of called “How to Make a Living Without Counting the Downloads”. Within months, Dorie interviewed me and captured the essence of my story and published it in Entrepreneurial You, her best-selling book on Amazon, and an article where many people found me and learned about my work on Harvard Business Review. Shortly after my encounter with Dorie, I realized that I couldn't possibly be the only lucky, independent, under the radar podcaster who’s benefited from having her own show. I decided to write this blog post, record it as a podcast episode and share with the world. It’s awesome to hear people’s stories and realize it could be anyone, so why not you? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support
Every year, I reinvent a little bit more of myself and my business. So will Feisworld be different in 2019 than 2018, 2017? I say, hell yeah. Today, I find myself spending nearly all my spare time with people who are insatiably curious about other cultures and creating new things on their own. Their skin colors, the language they speak, the gods they pray to, don’t matter. There is a significant portion of the people whom I’m close to and seek inspirations from are first-generation immigrants (The term "first-immigrant" refers to the very first immigrants or to the children of such an immigrant.). Many of my immigrant friends are also minorities in America (Asian, Hispanic, African American, and the LGBTQ community) Although I’m just one person who is an immigrant and a minority, I often feel empowered and enlighten by the stories I learn from this very community. What are the immigrant stories you’d like to hear? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

When I started Feisworld Podcast in 2014, I knew very little about audio production, but I did know a thing or two about growing an audience (thanks to 12 years of working as a digital producer). In recent conversations with other podcasters, I casually unveiled a tactic I’ve been using since the inception of Feisworld to increase my podcast awareness and engagement. Most people have not heard of me, and I love interviewing unsung heroes, "getting the word out" isn't trivial. I hate gimmicks, and growing downloads alone didn't appeal to me. This approach below is for those who of you who want to grow your podcast in the long run. There's no quick fix. The one pre-requisite is that you need to have guests on the show to maximize impacts. Alternatively, if you are a one-man show but you discuss other people and topics, I can see some methods work in the same manner. Give them a shot and please let me know your feedback below in the comments area. What’s the one hidden gem? Simple: You need to proactively reach out to organizations, schools, groups, people and TELL them about the episode when it comes out. About Our Guest Helena Escalante and I met through Seth Godin's altMBA in early 2017. We spent just about a month together working on various projects and "ship it" constantly. As one of the ideas that came out of altMBA, Helena started her blog, Entre Gurus, attracts thousands of readers daily from around the world. Helena is a fireball, full of energy. You can't help feeling upbeat, life is good when you are around her. After altMBA, we kept in touch with Gustavo Serafini's (also a guest on Feisworld) weekly Mastermind Group, when Helena more fully unveiled her potential and helpful nature as a colleague and a friend. How can you express the same emotion in one language and the other? Fei Wu is our very first guest who has now done two full episodes. I wanted to have her back on to discuss everything she’s been up to lately related to China. In this episode we talk a lot about the dominant Chinese audio platform called XimalayaFM and Fei’s upcoming efforts to help bridge the gap for international podcasters and consumers to use and enjoy it. Since Fei is a Chinese person who speaks the language but has lived more than half her life in the US and has run a successful English-language show for 3.5 years now, I think she’s pretty much an ideal person to help open that platform up to a more international audience. Ever dreamt of starting a podcast? Curious if you could make a living doing it? Fei Wu is the creator and host of Feisworld Podcast, which celebrates the stories of unsung heroes and self-made artists. Her podcast attracts 50,000 downloads and listeners from 40 countries. In 2014, Fei launched FeisWorld Podcast, not knowing where the future would lead her. Starting out in her simple studio set up, she interviewed people who interested her, such as performing artists from Cirque du Soleil and Broadway, social service people, and the LGBTQ Community. Her audience quickly grew beyond friends and family and attracted people who wanted to work with Fei as a freelance marketer. In 2016, Fei left her lucrative job in advertising and built a company of her own, Feisworld LLC, to help others tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. As Fei points out, everyone has a story you just need to ask the right questions. In our conversation today, Fei shares her journey and discoveries along the way. Clear that success in podcasting is more than downloads or sponsorship dollars to her, Fei dispels common myths that get in the way of great people launching podcasts. Yes you can make a living podcasting, and, as Fei explains, you don't need to have millions of downloads to do it. A casual, open conversation between two podcast hosts, we hope this episode inspires and educates you to follow your dream and embrace the process. Key Takeaways Everyone has a story you just need to ask the right questions. Choose guests that you are curious to learn more about. Define what success looks like for you, realizing that 40,000 downloads translates to approximately $250 in sponsorship dollars, and most sponsors are looking for a minimum of 100,000 downloads per month. So if you are gauging your podcast success on downloads or money, you will likely be disappointed. People won't listen just because you post an episode. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and share it with others. Think and plan strategically but the most important thing is to SHIP (launch). To find your confidence, refer back to your favorite show and listen/watch their first episode – compare where they started to where they are now. When you find yourself struggling with doubt or fatigue, remind yourself what it's all for. Terri talks to Fei Wu about how she researched coming to the US from China to study when she was a teenager and picked a school in Fryeburg, Maine so she could play ice hockey. Fei talks about launching her podcast in 2014 in order to have something of her own that didn’t require multiple rounds of client approval. She looks forward to using her platform to bring people together to make the world a better place. Who is Fei Wu? Fei Wu is from Beijing, China and came to the US in her teens to study in Fryeburg, Maine. Fei left her job in marketing and advertising to build a company of her own called Feisworld, LLC, with a mission to help small businesses and people tell better stories, find more customers and create new revenue streams. Fei is the creator and host of Feisworld Podcast which has listeners from over 40 countries. Show Highlights Fei tells the story about how she came from China to study in the US and how she looked for a school that had ice hockey and ended up in Fryeburg, Maine. Terri shares her story about how first experienced ice hockey at a Give Hockey a Try Day last year. Terri talks about exchanging houses with families in France and how valuable the experience was in terms of being forced to adapt to a different culture and language in developing empathy. Fei teaches art at a local high school and encourages the kids to travel and get exposed to other languages and cultures. Fei talks about how she was excited to come to school in the US and didn’t think she was brave or courageous at the time. Fei launched her podcast in October 2014 because she wanted to create something on her own without requiring approval from anyone else. She was influenced by Krista Tippett and her podcast On Being. Fei loves being able to learn about other people through her interviews with people on her podcast. Terri likes that she can be ‘nosy’ when she interviews people for her podcast. Fei learned how to actively listen as a podcaster which was somewhat in contrast to the way she was raised in China. Being an active listener is so important when interviewing for podcasts because it brings the listeners along with the process. Fei talks about how she learned to use her podcast as a platform to gain new consulting clients. Dorie Clark encouraged her to write an eBook about this (which is available on Fei’s website). She is seen as someone who delivers and is trustworthy. For Fei, 2018 will define who she is and who she will be in terms of her consulting work. She now chooses who she works with and doesn’t feel the need to say yes to everyone. If Fei could wave a magic wand, she would love to use her platform to bring people together. Terri’s Key Takeaway Empathy is the key to reducing the divisiveness in the world. About Our Guest Meet today's superhero, Eli Schwamm, who has appeared on an earlier episode of Feisworld in Episode 27 (nearly 3 years ago), where he introduced himself with a rap song he had written. That episode remains to be one of the most popular, most downloaded of all time. While in high school, Eli learned to produce music, had a near 4.0 GPA, and volunteered at Samaritans in Boston for a few years. He even went back there to continue his work during the summer when he’s in college. So where has he been? Where is he now? Eli and I talked about giving and receiving feedback, a more authentic understanding of empathy, his relentless curiosity towards the healthcare system. He interned at Mass General Hospital, Boston Medical Center, and received his EMT certification. Eli believes that there is a special connection between people that is "only uniquely possible in a healthcare setting". Now as a Junior at Vassar college, Eli spends his "off hours" working at a transitional community helping previously incarcerated young adults. This week on Feisworld, we are joined by a lovely young lady named Anny Laplante. Anny is a "flyer" currently performing with Circus 1903 in a breathtaking act called Russian Cradle Duo. Russian Cradle Duo is a famously known circus act, where the aerialist being propelled is referred to as a "flyer" (that's Anny), while the one doing the tossing and catching is referred to as a "carrier" (or "catcher"). The flyer usually starts and ends by standing on the frame above the catcher. The flyer then swings holding on to the catcher’s hands, performs releases at the top of the swing, and is re-caught in mid-air. There are many technical aspects in terms of the strength and speed required for the tossing and throwing to be possible. Needless to say that this act is very challenging and dangerous. I was covered with tears when I first watched Anny perform in one of my favorite Cirque du Soleil show called KURIOS. I cried again the second and third time. Show notes, tools and resources: www.feisworld.com/blog/polly-chatfield Polly Chatfield is a teacher, poet, and winner of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for her topic "Patterns of Simile in The Divine Comedy". I met her during the 2016 Merrill Speakers Series at the Commonwealth School. For over twenty years, Polly taught various subjects at Commonwealth. Associate Producer of Feisworld, Adam Leffert, fondly recalls Polly as one of his favorite teachers of all time. He is not alone. Decades after graduation, many of Polly's students still walk up to her at the school, on the street and express how she changed their lives, for the better. I met a few of her students including a Senior Producer from the New York Times and a Judge at the US Circuit Court. If you didn't know anything about the Commonwealth School (Boston, MA), they are an independent, coed day school for grades 9 through 12, enrolling about 150 students in four grades. They are "academically rigorous, catering to bright, curious students who enjoy intellectual adventures in classes often taught at a college-level". With nearly 75% of graduating seniors recognized as National Merit Finalists, Semifinalists, or Commended Students, and some 35% recognized by the AP Scholars program, Commonwealth School is one of the most recognized and successful private schools in the country. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support
Helen Chong is the founder and principal broker of Haylen Group Inc, a real estate investment services company, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. She raised three young children while building and running her own business. Helen grew up in Hong Kong. At a very young age, she experienced how difficult life can be. She had gone through numerous financial hardships as a child, recalling days being left home alone while her parents worked in another country. Helen had to quit school from time to time to help her parents’ restaurant business. When Helen was 18, she made a difficult decision to move to the US on her own despite her parents’ objection. As a result, she had to save every penny and graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Seen as a successful business woman today, Helen shares with us how she balances career, relationship, motherhood. Helen Chong was introduced to Feisworld by Chris Yen, a previous podcast guest on the show. We hope Helen's voice gives mothers out there, an opportunity to connect and reflect. During our conversation, Helen volunteered to answer some of the most difficult questions including her own struggles with postpartum depression. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support
Gordon Lau recently graduated from NYU with a degree in philosophy. At age five, I took Gordon skating for the first time. He furiously got up after after each fall and didn't want to leave for hours. At age ten, he won a Ping Pong Tournament in Hong Kong, played Rugby for the Hong Kong National Junior Team against some of the most competitive leagues in the world. He's a skateboarder who self started several skate camps to help others learn. Gordon and his family moved to Toronto when he was three. He didn't speak any English and was enrolled in a Montessori School. Just before middle school, his family moved back to Hong Kong, when Gordon experienced reverse cultural shock. He then enrolled in the brutally competitive Hong Kong International School (HKIS) through high school. What will you get out of this interview? Beyond my own reflections for Gordon's upbringing and recent development, his story isn't unusual for millennials today. Many children grow up in multiple continents as a result of their parents jobs, choice of immigration. I find it interesting and often educational to connect with people like them. They have all faced and overcome fears and struggles at an early age. When you have to move around constantly as a kid, the lost of friendship and familiarity of the life you once had can be difficult to manage. People who experience these transitions early in life are often more calm and resourceful as they get older. Feisworld Podcast has tapped into an interesting theme about change, because all of us go through changes frequently. Very few of them are unnoticeable. Many are uncomfortable and intimidating, or even scary at times. We are not alone in this most human experience. Hearing other people's stories on Feisworld has painted a vivid picture for me to understand just that. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

Welcome to a special episode of Feisworld, where I interview 5 guests! They are Sue Brooks, an art teacher from the Design and Visual Communications Program at Newton North High School (NNHS), and her four graduating seniors : Marisa Ng, Bradley Trepanier, Sophie Tavolieri and Max Hernadez. The episode features the latest news and development from Sue's program. Marisa, Bradley, Sophie and Max took turns and talked about their fascinating projects in the past two years (2014-2016). From teaching inner city kids (who don't speak much English) on how to design complex systems, to getting Justin Bieber's attention at TD Garden in Boston (a sold-out, 17,000-seat stadium) when the lights went off. Lessons learned in Design and Visual Communications? "It's OK to fail." "You don't notice that you are learning, but you are!" "Hold your ideas loosely. Keep it loose and expand your brain." "Always challenge myself." If you are a student, a parent, a relative or a friend who believes in design but not sure how it can be a long term career, this is the episode for you. If you are lucky enough to live in Boston, Newton, I hope you get in touch with Newton North High School to learn more. This episode is not sponsored by NNHS. Rather it is my personal opinion and observation during the past five years. As a professional in the marketing, design, advertising world, I can say with confidence that design is critical in many areas - visual design, product design, user experience design, illustration, storyboarding and more. If you have questions for either Sue Brooks or myself, please feel free to reach out by leaving a message on this blog, or get in touch with me @feisworld on Facebook. Matthew Cronin is a 21-year old student majoring Foreign Policy at Boston University. He is expected to graduate in May 2016. Matthew and I met at Inna’s Kitchen in Newton, MA, where he works part-time. Through a casual conversation over a year ago, I found out that Matthew would be studying abroad in the Middle East as part of his study-abroad program. I couldn't wait for his return and learn more about his experience. Although study-abroad was not a requirement for his major, Matthew chose a path to learn more about the Middle East through the people and culture. To prepare for his trip, Matthew took extensive courses in learning Arabic, a language he finds artistic and beautiful. In this short 30-min conversation with Matthew Cronin, we discussed: His earlier life, as a high school dropout, before Boston University Learning Arabic: a beautiful language (by its sound and construction in a root system) First impressions in Jordan and Morocco Getting to the people in the Middle East "A high-contact society" in "a system with no system" Study-abroad in the Middle East and a social life away from home Life skills for immigrants, travelers and students from Place A to B A growing appreciation for social networks and human connections Are you a student who's looking to transition from school to work? Show notes, tools and resources: feisworld.com/blog/karen-fan-felege-gebru I have served on the Advisory Committee for Newton Public Schools Career & Vocational Technical Education Committee since 2011. I met Karen Fan and Felege Gebru through InvenTeam, initiated by an incredible art teacher named Sue Brooks at Newton North High School. InvenTeam functions very much like a small design and technology firm, where every student on the team has a specific role such as a designer, engineer, product manager. InvenTeam chose to participate in the Lemelson-MIT competition. After a year of hard work, their project was chosen to be presented at the White House Science Affair in 2014. President Barack Obama greeted the students and even asked questions about the project. When I received an email from Mrs. Brooks about this update, I almost fell out of my chair at work. As you can imagine, I had to invite them to Feisworld. Today, Karen is a Sophomore at MIT and Felege is a Junior at Brown. In Part 1, we dive right into their visit to the White House: What was it like for them to meet with President Obama, presenting to him and then having an intellectual exchange? How was InvenTeam formed? Who was the key person to make it happen? What was the project they worked on? Who did they collaborate with? How has this experience changed both of their lives? What does design have to do with technology? Why does Mrs. Brooks go out of her way to help students who are interested in arts? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support
Andrew and Kevin Atherton are living my childhood dreams. I had to put them on this podcast. Did you dream about flying as a child? I did, nearly every single day. I loved reading comic books and imagined myself as a superhero. I often dressed like one as soon as I came home from school. Recently, my mom and I went to see our first Cirque du Soleil show ever in Boston. The show was called Varekai. While every single act was extraordinary, there was one particular segment that left both of us perpetually in awe. Two very similar looking men flew across the entire stadium over the heads of thousands of audience, then balancing on their heads and hands 50+ ft in the air. They formations looked like paintings, statues and art we had not seen before. They are superheroes to me. As soon as I returned from show, I looked up "Varekai aerialists straps" and found Andrew and Kevin Atherton, the identical twins, the original performers and creators behind Varekai duo-straps. I emailed them right away without expecting a response. To my surprise, they replied within 24 hours with such enthusiasm to join me on Feisworld. To prep for my interview, I sourced questions from Facebook and Twitter to add to my list. During our conversation, I discovered that Andrew and Kevin are amazing storytellers who not only answered all the questions, but also dove deep into how they engage each other on stage as well as their intimate connections with the audience. "We bring them on stage with us!" Andrew and Kevin were born and raised in the UK. They were professional gymnasts for 17 years before transitioning to aerialists at Cirque du Soleil for 16 years so far with no sign of slowing down. In fact, they both recently decided to create a new show and move to New York City in 2016. (They will be announcing details and sharing behind-the-scenes updates with you via the News section of their brand new website - a collaboration between Athertons and Feisworld!) To learn more about Andrew and Kevin, please visit their new website, Facebook, Instagram (@andiatherton and @kevin.atherton). Do you enjoy this podcast? Ira Cummings is my guest on the feisworld podcast. He is a Sr. Designer at Arnold Worldwide, with a background and training in illustration. I called him out as the first introvert ever invited to the podcast (perhaps, others may just be better at hiding it). But let’s face it, #IntrovertsRule. They are focused, thoughtful, and often bring the most surprising ideas and solutions to the table. Ira is one of them, whom I had the pleasure to work with in the past year on a variety of projects. Ira has a Open Studio coming up Friday April 10th - 12th 2015. If you happen to listen to this podcast before the show, look up Miller Street Open Studio in Somerville and that’s where you will meet Ira and his artworks. In this one hour conversation with Ira, we talked about design, branding, experiencing the brand as a customer and vice versa - engaging with customers as a brand. Ira and I area also in the process of rebranding the feisworld podcast. He says:”When my friends embark on something that's so close to their hearts, I like to help them out!” Ira has been a huge supporter from the very beginning of my podcast. Feisworld isn’t the only one, Ira has helped out on AIGA, Jason Stevens’ Annual Design Conference, Design Exchange Boston (DXB), Design Museum Boston. "My interest and love for both fuel the pursuit whether it's for work, myself, all of none of the above." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support
