Queen of the Conquered synopsis: An ambitious young woman with the power to control minds seeks vengeance against the royals who murdered her family, in a Caribbean-inspired fantasy world embattled by colonial oppression. Sigourney Rose is the only surviving daughter of a noble lineage on the islands of Hans Lollik. When she was a child, her family was murdered by the islands' colonizers, who have massacred and enslaved generations of her people—and now, Sigourney is ready to exact her revenge. When the childless king of the islands declares that he will choose his successor from amongst eligible noble families, Sigourney uses her ability to read and control minds to manipulate her way onto the royal island and into the ranks of the ruling colonizers. But when she arrives, prepared to fight for control of all the islands, Sigourney finds herself the target of a dangerous, unknown magic. Someone is killing off the ruling families to clear a path to the throne. As the bodies pile up and all eyes regard her with suspicion, Sigourney must find allies among her prey and the murderer among her peers... lest she become the next victim.

Shout out to listener Andrew for recommending what turned out to be our most divisive text to date! Brenna quite likes both the book and the film, while Brennan and Joe...do not.Brenna argues for the book as reflective of a specific period in British history and also of a kind of British Dude Lit ©, while Brennan and Joe find it too cold and episodic. All three of us agree that the film amounts to fan-fiction for Manzoor's own life. As a work of "mainstream" pop culture, Chadha's film leans pretty heavily into coming of age tropes that Joe feels sands off the edges, while Brenna thinks is cute and delightful (white saviour narratives aside).Brennan's homework:Jay's Gay Agenda by Jason JuneThe Passing Playbook by Isaac FitzsimonsThe Darkness Outside Us by Eliot SchreferI'll Be The One by Lila LeeThe Love Curse of Melody McIntyre by Robin TalleyHani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba JaigirdarBrenna's homework:Felix Ever After by Kacen CallenderWanna connect with the show? This week Roger and Lovell are so honored to meet the incredible creative team of Lexie Bean (author of the groundbreaking and award-winning novel The Ship We Built and editor of the anthology Written on the Body, a Lambda Literary Award finalist) and Logan Rozos (rising star of the Peabody Award-winning series David Makes Man and the brilliant voice behind the audiobook of new TGNC classic Felix Ever After). Logan and Lexie are about to begin filming their powerful documentary project What Will I Become?, which chronicles the stories of three young trans men who lost their lives to suicide: Blake Brockington, Andrew Martinez, and Kyler Prescott. We could not be more grateful that Lexie and Logan took the time out of their busy pre-production schedule to discuss the film with us, and we encourage all our listeners to go support this special endeavor via their fundraising page on Fractured Atlas: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/what-will-i-become (https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/what-will-i-become). Logan also speaks about his work with the Parity organization to bridge the gaps between various faiths and the LGBT community, and Lexie discusses their role as a member of the National Leadership Council of RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network). These two extraordinary young people are definitely going to be names you'll be hearing for decades to come, so now's the time to start learning all about them! Plus we'll discover more than we ever wanted to know about the elusive Joanne's gremlin antics - and you'll hear Roger perform the Gayborhood's first exorcism... Go on Instagram to follow Lexie at @itssk8nite, Logan at @loganrozos, and their documentary at @whatwillibecome_doc, plus learn everything you can about the folx highlighted in this week's Gayborhood Watch: Blake Brockington, Andrew Martinez, Kyler Prescott, Travis Coles, Drew Dickler, and the podcast Maintenance Phase. And don't forget to follow @rogerq.mason and @lovell.holder on Instagram for all your Gayborhood updates!

In this episode we're discussing Queen of the Conquered Kacen Callender (they/them), the first book in the Islands of Blood and Storm series. The book takes place in a Caribbean-inspired fantasy world and follows our main character, Sigourney, as she makes a bid for power as the only Black person in contention to rule the islands that have been colonized by the white Fjern. When all those in line to the throne are gathered for the storm season and start to be killed off one by one, chaos ensues. As it does. Content warning for discussions of rape and white supremacist violence.  Callender also wrote Felix Ever After. It's on our TBR! Have you read it yet? Here's a helpful video outlining the history of colonialism in the Caribbean region. It's about 40 minutes long, and well worth the watch. Check it out! Want to test your Caribbean geography? Here's a map quiz. I (K) just took it and got 62% *cringing emoji* Go ahead, learn yourself something. Fjerda, Fjern…notice the similarities? In Norwegian, “fjern” means “far away” or “distant.” K highly recommends Sami Schalk's work, especially her book Bodyminds Reimagined: Race, (Dis)Ability and Gender in Black Women's Speculative Fiction. And follow Professor Schalk on twitter! (@DrSamiSchalk) Resmaa Menakem's website. K is slowly working their way through his book My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies.  Transcript to come Spring 2021 As always, we'd love to be in discussion with you, magical folx. We had the ABSOLUTE pleasure of talking to our friend Sara from @agradstudentreadsforfun. Not only does she have the best pre-gay journal entries, but she's super brilliant and in a PhD program and going to change student's lives (We know it. We manifest this truth). Maybe she ruined a library book with coffee, told a funny story about her girlfriend looking up Miley pics, and travels with her pothos Luna belted into her car (safety first), but we can't really say for sure. Listen to the episode and find out. Sara recommends Felix Ever After by Karen Callendar, Magic For Liars by Sarah Gailey, Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus, The Prettiest Star by Carter Sickels, Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo, and The Grief Keeper by Alexandra Villasante.
