For author Taylor Jenkins Reid, fame is a brilliant lens through which to examine societal expectations of women. The female celebrities in her glamourous novels all navigate the restrictions put on their behaviour in very different ways, in turn mirroring how all women – famous or not – might feel compelled to act. In this chat, Fearne and Taylor share how much of their own self-worth is wrapped up in their perception of what they've achieved, across both a day and an entire lifetime. Plus, Taylor explains why we don't necessarily know who we are until we give a lot of activities and jobs a try, and why pure, unadulterated joy is just as good a reason as any to do something. Sure, we're all out here working hard and trying to live our very best lives, but what if you think the best way to achieve your dreams is under the glare of television lights? On this edition of The Weekly Reader, we review two new novels that go behind the scenes (and all that glamour!) and show us how “real” things truly are: "Small Game" by Blair Braverman, and "Carrie Soto is Back" by Taylor Jenkins Reid. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Kayla and Taylor discuss the themes and major beats of the first part of Louisa May Alcott's 1868 novel, Little Women. Topics include the importance of depicting everyday occurrences in literature, how Louisa may have been Team Lesbian, and how birth order may or may not show up in our personalities. Also, Kayla accidentally reveals a MASSIVE spoiler, much to Taylor's chagrin. This podcast is sustained by sales of our debut book, Meow: A Novel (For Cats). "David Foster Wallace noticed early on that tennis is a good sport for literary types and purposes. It draws the obsessive and brooding. It is perhaps the most isolating of games. Even boxers have a corner, but in professional tennis it is a rules violation for your coach to communicate with you beyond polite encouragement, and spectators are asked to keep silent while you play. Your opponent is far away, or, if near, is indifferently hostile. It may be as close as we come to physical chess, or a kind of chess in which the mind and body are at one in attacking essentially mathematical problems. So, a good game not just for writers but for philosophers, too." - John Jeremiah Sullivan, String Theory: David Foster Wallace on Tennis *** In a world where the majority of one-on-one relations are becoming increasingly adversarial and gamified, the tennis court provides an ideal clay for metaphor. In this week's episode, we read a passage from Taylor Jenkins Reid's bestselling tennis epic Carrie Soto is Back (translated, as always, into cat language). A cat with a tennis ball in its mouth then explores its surprising parallels with David Foster Wallace's voluminous and genre-transcending writings on the sport, meowing its thoughts with unexpected clarity. “The lattice of the Fates twines the destinies of these disparate minds, their varied and unexpected parallels reinforcing the epistemic grid to create a resilient hermeneutic surface, imparting force and direction to the anomized and deliterated individual as the thrust of the racket gives flight to its impetuous target.” – Cuddle Princess, Unaltered Domestic Shorthair *** MEOW is the first and only literary podcast for your cat, conceived and presented in its native language. This podcast is sustained by sales of our debut book, Meow: A Novel (For Cats). Praise for Meow: A Novel "Breathtaking... a revelation." - Stubbs, Unaltered Domestic Shorthair "Meow meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow. Meow? Meow." - Joan Didion Follow us on Instagram: @meowliterature Facebook: facebook.com/themeowlibrary Twitter: twitter.com/meowlibrary and YouTube

We are back with our favorite episode, Read the Room! Carrie Soto is Back is about a tennis player coming out of retirement to reclaim her record and title as being the best tennis player in the world. Taylor Jenkins Reid does an amazing job shining light on the dedication pro athletes have to have in order to be the best at their craft. We talk about gender roles, the mention of Princess Diana and what women have to do to stay relevant in any field. Let us know what you think by leaving a 5 star review. Tell your friends and enemies about us
Welcome back to another episode! This week, we discuss Taylor Jenkins Reid's most recent release, Carrie Soto is Back. And, indeed, the b**** is back and better than ever. Carrie's story is captivating and all three of us note how pleasantly surprised we were when we became invested in the world of tennis (despite our bad experiences involving it). We also somehow sidetrack to our Animal Jam past and reminisce about our favorite mini-games, feelings of superiority, and bad financial decisions. Unsurprisingly, we also plug the book playlists that we created recently that you can view here: Book Expectations.
Sabem aqueles livros que só de pensar já dão preguiça de ler? Pois bem, o episódio desta semana é sobre isso mesmo: livros e autores que queremos bem longe da nossa TBR. Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid. She is HUGE on TikTok and a new book will be a big deal. It's about the greatest tennis player there's ever been, Carrie Soto, who retires but then is outraged when another player equals her record and decides to go back for one last Grand Slam to make sure she stays on top. It's obviously set in the tennis world but I don't think you have to be mad on tennis to enjoy it – it's about grit and determination and ambition and what you sacrifice to realise it; and of course being Taylor Jenkins Reid there's also a romantic interest. Killer in the Kremlin by John Sweeney. The title is a clue to John Sweeney's thoughts on Putin. He's a war reporter who's been to most of the world's trouble hotspots but turns his attention to Putin, who he says had an awful childhood, was a poor performer at the KGB but set his sights on the top job and when he got it, engaged in Black Ops against his own people – for which he blamed Chechnya, which then empowered him to go to war against them which improved his popularity at home – and details the very many people who have fallen foul of Putin and the methods he used to dispose of them (poisoned, shot, car and plane “accidents”, and the old falling out of a window trick (which someone did just the other day). It's riveting. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 12, 2022 is: invective in-VEK-tiv noun Invective means "insulting or abusive language." It can also refer to an abusive expression or speech. // Her opening campaign speech was, to the shock of everyone present, filled with invective that contrasted sharply with the expectations of those in attendance. See the entry > Examples: There's a racial aspect [to Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel Carrie Soto is Back] too: the powerfully built, Latina Carrie is judged very differently to the supermodel blondes on tour. Reid includes mocked-up newspaper articles and transcripts of TV shows to illustrate the misogynistic invective that plagues her—and which, unfortunately, is far from historic.” — Marianka Swain, The Telegraph (London), 20 Aug. 2022 Did you know? Invective originated in the 15th century as an adjective meaning "of, relating to, or characterized by insult or abuse," but by the early 16th century, it was functioning as a noun referring to a harsh verbal attack, and within a few decades, to abusive language as a whole. Invective is similar to verbal abuse, but in addition to being a more formal term than abuse, invective tends to suggest not only anger and vehemence but also rhetorical skill. It sometimes also implies public denunciation, as in "blistering political invective."

On today's episode we discuss a “banger” of a book: Carrie Soto Is Back, by New York Times bestselling author Taylor Jenkins Reid. The novel tells the story of a legendary athlete attempting a comeback when the world considers her past her prime. In the end we declare that, thanks to this book and our discussion, Carinn is back, Kate is back and Carinn & Kate are back!! Oh, and Carrie is too! Complicated Woman: Carrie Soto. We have a lot to say about Carrie, a character who unapologetically wears the “unlikeable” label. Scenes. We discuss all our favorite scenes that show Carrie's arc - how she learned to love, to lose and to find her heart both on and off the court. We've picked all the best scenes with her father, Bowe, Nicki Chan and more! (09:30) What's Your Damage, Carrie? We put Carrie on the couch and discuss the lessons she needs to learn about being ambitious, but not letting it lead her by the nose. Our diagnosis comes from Carrie's mom: don't let them call you a warrior when you are a queen. (43:25) What She Said: Taylor Jenkins Reid. Kate loves an interview where Taylor asks the question - “when is enough enough?” We debate whether and when women should lay down their “swords” and try to find balance. Carinn shares the much-needed lesson she learned from Taylor's publishing journey: Don't stop in the middle of the story. (49:53) Crystal Ball. We speculate about what's next for Carrie because to us she's basically a real person! (60:09) Who Won? Spanglish brings up unexpected grief for Carinn and Kate declares that losing is what won. Whaaaat? Yep, listen to hear the two get personal. (62:37) Takeaways. Kate realizes that she may just need to learn the same lessons and grow in the same areas as Carrie. Carinn is inspired by the origins of the tennis term 'love'. (76:42)

Template=../livros/layout_produto.asp&CategoriaID=927382&ID=514645 Carol (filme): https://mubi.com/pt/films/carol-2015 Hacks: https://www.hbomax.com/br/pt/series/urn:hbo:series:GYIBToQrPdotpNQEAAAEa Secreto e proibido: https://www.netflix.com/br/title/80209024 Hollywood: https://www.netflix.com/br/title/81088617 The first lady: https://www.paramountplus.com/br/signin/?redirectUrl=%2Fshows%2Fthe-first-lady%2F Equal: https://www.hbomax.com/br/pt/series/urn:hbo:series:GX3HsnA0FlSjDDgEAAAAC
