This will forever go down as a Podcast highlight for us. Being given the opportunity to talk with the one and only M L Rio about Dark Academia, her new book ‘Graveyard Shift', while also waxing lyrical about ‘If We Were Villains' was something me and Sophie could have only dreamed of when we started The Dark Academicals.M L Rio's novella is summarised thusly:“Every night, in the college's ancient cemetery, five people cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper, always in search of a story. One dark October evening in the defunct churchyard, they find a hole that wasn't there before. A fresh, open grave where no grave should be. But who dug it, and for whom? Before they go their separate ways, the gravedigger returns. As they trail him through the night, they realize he may be the key to a string of strange happenings around town that have made headlines for the last few weeks--and that they may be closer to the mystery than they thought.”In this episode we discuss:The rising trend of the Dark Academia genreM L Rio's writing patterns, preferences, influences and processesTHAT ENDING of ‘Graveyard Shift'The cultural and linguistic legacy of Shakespeare and his worksA sneaky little insight into the next novel, ‘Hot Wax'And a whole lot of tangents…

In this episode of The Book Fix, Yajaira and Cheli review Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio, author of the acclaimed If We Were Villains. The story follows five night shift workers—a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist (oops, idk why I thought she was a librarian), a church steward, and the editor of the college paper—who cross paths in an ancient cemetery each night. On one eerie October evening, they discover an open grave where none should be. As they begin to investigate, they encounter a mysterious gravedigger who seems to be connected to strange occurrences in town. Because its the holiday season, we're giving back by reading 1 star reviews of our favorite books. It's a different kind of pain and laughter you experience when you read these reviews that completely miss the plot of the stories you're in love with or are too obsessed with the plot to see the story the way you did. But thats literally the best thing about reading because one person's unhinged, 1-star review, is another's content, lol. We hope you've enjoyed this insane year with us and can't wait to see what this next chapter has in store. Tori and I wish you all a safe holiday season and hope you enjoy your well deserved time off! We'll see you all in 2024! Byyeeeee

Aujourd'hui, je vous fais découvrir un livre déjà érigé au rang de "classique" des temps modernes. If We Were Villains, de M.L. This murder mystery thriller straddles the line between new adult and adult fiction, utilizing flashbacks for a unique delivery along with endless references to the bard himself (i.e. Shakespeare). This book is an ideal choice for readers who appreciate impeccable craft and/or live theater, and is arguably an equally good for those looking to build on their own writing skills by reading artfully concocted books.Join Karissa as she analyzes If We Were Villains, offering a review of what does and doesn't work from a writer's perspective!Keep writing, everyone, and we'll see you on the next page...Find us on social media @thescripturientsocietyCheck out our sister podcast That Pretentious Book Club for bookish comedy content!Support the show at https://www.patreon.com/storysirensstudio or check out merch and more at storysirensstudio.comSupport the show

What the actual fucketh you guys. This book is a waste of your time please DO NOT READ. It put Tori in a shit mood and Maddie was there to kinda stave off the simmering anger. The best part of this episode was reading all the one star reviews validating the hate for this book. I think we simply are not dark academia babes. We can't handle no plot all vibes, we gotta have a good story. Hopefully Leigh Bardugo will save us from this book slump next week. please god Leigh, we need you.Next Episode: Ninth HouseFollow Us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@goodbooksbadbanter Follow Us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodbooksbadbanterIf you or a loved one has been personally victimized by the book If We Were Villains, join the damn club and commiserate with us - like, comment, and subscribe to our episodes every Wednesday because at least we don't have to suffer alone.

The book of the moment for today's episode is If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio. Just a forewarning for those of you listening, this is NOT a spoiler-free zone. We will be discussing this book in all of its glory, which of course includes revealing the ending. M. L. Rio was born in Miami and raised in North Carolina by parents from California, and has never known how to answer the question, “Where are you from?” Her writing career began in elementary school with Reading Rainbow's Young Writers and Illustrators Contest and a story about a girl with a pet dragon and the problem of how to hide it from her parents. She picked up a pen to write her first novel at the much more judicious age of twelve. Half a dozen ‘drawer novels' later, she is represented by Arielle Datz of Dunow, Carlson & Lerner Literary Agency, Inc. Her debut novel, If We Were Villains, was published by Flatiron Books in 2017, and has since become an international bestseller, published in ten countries and six languages. Her music writing is published in The Vinyl District. In addition to her work as a writer, she is a recovering actor turned academic. She holds an MA in Shakespeare studies from King's College London and Shakespeare's Globe, and is currently pursuing her PhD in early modern English literature at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research explores representations of madness and mood disorder on the early modern stage. She lives in Washington, D. C. with too many books, too many records, and a mutt called Marlowe. In fact, the author's way of weaving the bard's words into this drama set primarily in 1997 may make you consider giving his works another try.  Recorded remotely, this episode jumps right in to the story - and although all TPBC episodes are spoiler-y, just a warning that this is a book you might want to read first since it's a mystery - but we wouldn't dare tell you how to listen to podcasts.Pour yourself a cup of tea, raise a pinky, and join the club for this discussion of If We Were VillainsSkippers jump to 17:05Visit us at storysirensstudio.com or find us on social media @thatpretentiousbookclubCheck out our sister podcast The Scripturient Society for writers!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/storysirensstudio)

Kinsey   Questions 1. Hello ~ I am fan of the podcast and wanted to ask for a recommendation if possible: I am traveling solo in Italy for two weeks in the end of March. I always like to bring 2 books along and was hoping you might have some recommendations for books that might be real page-turning addictive type. My directives are as such: - 2 publications (at least one of which I like fiction but historical non-fiction is also great). Since I hope to bring 2, neither of them should be super heavy/long for travel-weight-ease - I am a real fan of first person narrative - I love the semi-classics like anything by Hermann Hesse, Emile Zola and some Hemingway but also open to newer things (Murakami and Tom Robbins are people I go back to often) - I love a story that is somewhat of an adventure and the plot can range from realism to fantasy. - Really what I am looking for is something I can't put down. Thank you so much and I hope to hear from you soon ~ if not in the show an email would do the job and I'd be ever so grateful. -TJ   2. hello! god, this podcast is heaven-sent, thank you so much for what you do! maybe you can help me find something in this very narrow niche! one of my favorite movies is romeo + juliet (1996) and i've been craving for something that plays to that star-crossed lovers thrown in neon splendor. something that has that city grit feel to it but also that greasy-dreamy quality and moments of awe and heartbreak. and neon. i would love something to rip my heart out both with the characters, their love story and the descriptions! something lush, a little silly, and utterly beautiful and sprawling. this is asking for a lot, i know, but if anyone can find it — i believe you can! i would LOVE it to be lgbt. no y/a or graphic novels please. fantasy and magic are encouraged but not required. -Cal   3. I would love to expand my reading repertoire to include more books in translation. I would appreciate some fiction recommendations that will immerse me in the lives and cultures of diverse people and places, particularly areas that we may not hear about often here in the U.S. I enjoy most genres as long as the writing is engaging and the stories are interesting. I am sensitive to any books that involve harm to animals and prefer to avoid stories like that. Other than that, I have no trigger warnings. I will include a link to my Goodreads profile and hope that will be helpful. -Bobbi   4. Hello! I would love to find a great book to read next and I'm completely overwhelmed by my TBR. My most recent favorites are the Unseen World and If We Were Villains. I also love authors Hannah Kent and Celeste Ng. I'm currently reading Washington Black and I'm loving it so far. Thank you for the help! -Lauren   5. My sister-in-law and I are going to celebrate our birthdays next summer by taking a literary-themed trip to England. We plan to visit the homes and inspirational settings of our favorite female authors, especially Jane Austen, all the Brontes, and Daphne du Maurier. Besides rereading their novels, we would like to read travelogues or fictional books that highlight these regions in England. We anticipate traveling throughout Cornwall, Hampshire, Bath, and Yorkshire (and possibly Hay-on-Wye in Wales because who can resist a town famous for its bookshops!). I love the podcast and have been listening for years. Thanks. -Donna   6. Just finished The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor Lavelle and I've got stars on my eyes I love the way he started with such a racist story and, instead of glossing over it, put it center focus and used that as a way to exam the racism of the day and in Lovecraft's work. Do you know of any other sci-fi, fantasy or horror retellings that make great social commentary? -Kathleen   7. I just saw The Favourite and I loved it! I would like either a nonfiction book about the real Queen Anne or (if that's not possible) a queer historical fiction novel, preferably one that flies under the radar. I've read KJ Charles, Cat Sebastian, Alan Hollingsworth, and Sarah Waters. -Amy   Books Discussed On Trails by Robert Moor America is in the Heart by Carlos Bulosan A Room with a View by EM Forster Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar As Meat Loves Salt (rec’d by Kathleen) by Maria McCann (TW: violence of all kinds) Anna-Marie McLemore War for the Oaks by Emma Bull Tentacle by Rita Indiana, transl by Achy Obejas (tw: rape) Disoriental by Négar Djavadi, translated by Tina Kover The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid The Psychology of Time Travel by Kate Mascarenhas (tw: self-harm, suicidal ideation, eating disorders) Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper The Merry Spinster by Daniel Mallory Ortberg Not So Stories, edited by David Thomas Moore Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough by Ophelia Field

This episode is sponsored by TBR and The Lost Man by Jane Harper. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher.   Questions 1. Hi guys! I’m looking for some novels in verse to read. I’ve always been a big fan of poetry, but never read to many novels in verse. Recently however I read Anne Carson’s amazing Autobiography of Red, and discovered a new favorite book. Now I’m looking for more novels in verse, but don’t know what’s good, or really where to start. I know of Brown Girl Dreaming from this show and have ordered it- so I’ll be reading that soon. Obviously I’ve read the classic epic poetry, like Homer, Virgil, and Ovid, etc. I’m open to any genre or themes, and I enjoy a wide variety of different poets. I read a lot of classic and modern poetry, so I’m not afraid of jumping into anything a bit dense. -Lisbeth   2. I am going to Lyon in March and would love some reading material to get me even more excited than I already am. Historical Fiction is definitely my favorite, but I like all genres, including romance, young adult, and non-fiction. Some of my most beloved authors include Ruth Reichl, Rose Lerner, Barbara Pym, Becky Chambers, Jess Kidd, Naomi Novik, and Patricia Lockwood. Please only women authors. Thank you! -Hillary   3. Hello ladies! I’ve been a fan of the podcast for a year now and because of it, my TBR seems endless. Yet here I am! My all time favorite show is NBC’s Hannibal (I do like the movies and books, but the show is light years better in my opinion) and after watching it for the fifth time I decided I need something else that is similar because my friends and family will murder me if I ever mention it again. I’m looking for something that’s equally dark and twisted but aesthetically beautiful. My favorite thing about the show was the complex, love-hate relationship between protagonist and antagonist, the way they blurred into one at times, their exploration of good and evil, but also how intentionally pretentiousness the whole show is. Some books that have kind of helped fill the hole so far were Song of Achilles (mostly because of the wonderful, flowery writing) Vicious, If We Were Villains, The Secret History and Born, Darkly. I’d love anything you could find that is remotely like this, bonus points for good queer rep. Thank you and hope y’all are doing good. -Celina   4. Hi ladies! Thanks so much for all the bookish fun! I’m looking for a book of poetry as a gift for my spouse. They like Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus, Paul Celan, and other lyrical poems about the human condition. Themes of love and inspiration are ideal but not required. I would prefer to support a living poet, and appreciate any recommendations! Thanks! -Lindsey   5. The greatest tragedy of my life is that Hanya Yanagihara has only released two books. I loved them both, particularly A Little Life. For two years I’ve been looking for books that give me the same feelings, especially books with queer characters and I need some help. Thank you! -Ellie   6. Hello! I typically read hard fantasy, but once in a while I crave something a little lighter. When I’m in that reading mood I have really enjoyed magical realism stories with a romantic plot or sub plot. I love the lush and lyrical writing. I enjoyed The Weight of Feathers and The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. The Night Circus is definitely on my list, but I was hoping you could give me some more diverse options please. I enjoy Toni Morrison and Octavia Butler because of their strong voices and unique subject matter. What I am really looking for is beautiful writing, a ending that makes you feel happy and fulfilled, and a story that makes you turn the page because it is just so darn lovely. Thank you for the recommendations! -Kyla   7. Hi ladies! I recently finished reading Red Clocks by Leni Zumas, and I really, really loved and related to Ro (the biographer) and Gin’s (the mender) independence. They didn’t have current romantic/life partners, and they weren’t agonizing over being alone or over trying to find someone. I am getting sick of novels where women spend a lot of time worrying about being “on the shelf.” I would like to read more books with women who are single and proud, and romance isn’t anywhere near the top of their priority list. I am willing to read any genre, length, or format. Can’t wait to hear what you have to recommend! Thanks so much! Guilt grows like a weed in the hearts of sinners. It’s hard to imagine anybody who’s never wronged another person. At some point, all of us are going to make a decision we’ll have trouble living with for the rest of our lives. And even if it’s a small thing, a trifle, it’ll sit with you in the dark hours of the night, stroking the skin at the back of your neck to keep you awake.Tonight’s story is about just such a feeling. A young boy in a bad neighborhood does something awful, and as he tries to move on from the deed, he finds it haunting him at every step. Never letting up for a second.Support us on PatreonFollow us on social media: Twitter | Facebook | Instagram Join the Westside Fairytales Horror and Lit ClubSend us an emailArtwork by Yui BreedloveThis month’s recommendations:Podcast recommendation: Canadian True Crime Literature recommendation: ”If We Were Villains” by M.L.
