Op 23 februari 1934 arriveren Pierre Nathan en Malou Gérin in Parijs met grootse plannen en een vrijwel lege portefeuille. John Dahl's The Last Seduction Continuing with an idea that we started a few episodes back focusing on Lena Olin in Romeo is Bleeding, this week Mr. Chavez & I take a look at an overlooked neo-noir, erotic thriller from 1994 featuring a stand-out performance from Linda Fiorentino. Our basic idea is the difficulty of casting "dangerous and strong" female characters with intimidating and daring actresses. So, why was Linda Fiorentino - an intelligentl and overpowering actor - not given the opportunities to break big? In John Dahl's cult classic, The Last Seduction, audiences were never given the chance to watch a performance that defied the narrative conventions of redemption, nurturing, or karmic comeuppance that is standard in Hollywood films. Fiorentino gives a performance that ranks with the great femme fatales of cinema including: Barbara Stanwyck (Double Indemnity), Johan Bennet (The Woman in the Window), Marie Windsor (The Killing) and Ann Savage (Detour). As Bridget Gregory/Wendy Kroy, Fiorentino is a sexual force without any apologies or sense of regret. John Travolta, Nancy Allen and director Brian De Palma teamed up to make the brilliant horror flick Carrie in 1976, but the team was nearly at their best 5 years later in this one about movie-makers. The show-offy De Palma, who mostly made thrillers, loved his characters to be all kinds of shades of gray. Mission possible here. Blow Out's set-ups & pay-offs are excellent...and the ending is operatic, symbolic and powerful. That perfect scream is heartbreaking. This violent tragedy is well-crafted, with inspirations from Antonioni's Blow-Up and the incident at Chappaquiddick. So go get some sound effects for the foley department as this 752nd episode of Have You Ever Seen examines the suspense/conspiracy thriller Blow Out. Well, Actually: at around the 44-minute mark, it should have been The Black Dahlia "was at the end of a pretty poor (box office) run" in 2006, not Femme Fatale. That was released in 2002. Ash guides Tyler and Randall through the full process—then breaks it down into a Quick & Dirty method that can get players to the table in minutes. Step 1: Choose an Archetype Archetypes replace traditional "classes" and are rooted in classic pulp fiction roles: Mystic (psychic powers, occult insight, vibes) Egghead (engineers, scientists, gadgeteers) Two-Fisted, Swashbuckler, Femme Fatale, Bon Vivant, and more Each archetype: Defines a core characteristic Grants bonus archetype skills Suggests traits, occupations, and story hooks This approach encourages concept-first design, letting the character idea drive the mechanics instead of the other way around. Step 3: Talents (High Pulp Edition) Because this game is running High Pulp, characters receive four talents instead of two. Talents are drawn from four categories: Physical Mental Combat Miscellaneous Highlights from the episode include: Psychic Powers Arcane Insight Weird Science Animal Companion (responsibly downgraded from "bear" to "bear-adjacent dog") Talents dramatically define how characters play and reinforce pulp action over fragile realism.
