In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. Hidden fees, high commissions, and driver exploitation have left restaurants struggling to stay afloat. Recognizing this broken system, Troy Smith, CEO of Chop Chop, created a solution designed to empower restaurants and drivers alike while saving money for small businesses.Chop Chop isn't your typical food delivery app. “We're not an ordering app,” Troy explained in today's episode. “We believe restaurants should take their own orders and payments. What we do is connect drivers with restaurants.” This unique approach eliminates the hefty commissions that traditional apps charge—often up to 30% of an order—enabling restaurants to retain more of their revenue.Troy's innovative model is simple yet impactful. Restaurants pay a flat $199 monthly fee to access the app, allowing them to connect with vetted drivers who deliver orders. Unlike other platforms, Chop Chop ensures drivers are paid fairly—directly from the restaurant through Stripe, with funds held in escrow until delivery is confirmed. Customers receive real-time updates via SMS without needing to download the app, while restaurants maintain full control of the customer relationship. This streamlined system offers a lifeline to small businesses, especially mom-and-pop restaurants, which have been disproportionately affected by high delivery fees. “Deliveries have become a huge revenue stream for restaurants, especially since COVID,” Troy shared. “But the current system just isn't working. Restaurants are paying more money to send food to their own customers than ever before.”Chop Chop's mission extends beyond financial benefits. Many drivers and restaurants in the network are first-generation immigrants who often face exploitation in the gig economy. “FundingHope really resonated with us because they're looking out for the small guy,” Troy said. Chop Chop's crowdfunding campaign on FundingHope invites customers, drivers, and supporters to invest in the platform and help scale this game-changing solution. For just $199 a month—less than the price of a cup of coffee per day—restaurants can reclaim control, drivers can earn fairly, and customers can support their favorite local businesses without guilt. Chop Chop is more than a delivery app; it's a movement to restore fairness and transparency in food delivery.Visit ChopChop.mobi or FundingHope to learn more about this revolutionary app and its crowdfunding campaign.tl;dr:Troy Smith explains how Chop Chop empowers restaurants by eliminating high delivery fees and exploitation. The platform charges restaurants a flat $199 monthly fee, connecting them with vetted drivers for deliveries.Chop Chop ensures drivers are paid fairly via Stripe, fostering transparency and trust in the process.Inspired by personal experiences and challenges during COVID, Troy created a practical, scalable solution. The company invites investors to join its FundingHope campaign, supporting a fairer food delivery ecosystem. How to Develop Making a Plan As a SuperpowerTroy Smith's superpower, as he describes it, is the ability to “make a plan.” Growing up in Zimbabwe, he adopted the Afrikaans phrase maak a plan, meaning to solve problems through creativity and resourcefulness. “When something presents itself, a challenge, something is going wrong, you make a plan,” Troy explained in this episode. One powerful story that exemplifies this superpower occurred during the early days of COVID. Troy visited a small Japanese restaurant, where the owner, short on staff, asked him to deliver food for $10. This simple act planted the seed for Chop Chop. “She made the plan for me,” Troy said, “and I realized we could turn this into an app, connecting drivers with restaurants while ensuring fair pay.”To develop this superpower, Troy suggests starting with observation. “Instead of jumping in and trying to fix things, take a moment to see what's going on,” he shared. Identifying the root cause of a problem is key to crafting an effective solution. He also emphasizes the importance of systems, a lesson he learned while running McDonald's franchises in South Africa.By following Troy's example and advice, you can make problem-solving a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileTroy Smith (he/him):CEO, Chop ChopAbout Chop Chop: Chop Chop is a logistics platform that empowers restaurants to run first-party delivery without the costs and headaches of hiring their own drivers. We are not an ordering platform. Restaurants continue to take orders and payments directly from their customers. We connect them with local verified drivers who are screened for license and insurance and who complete deliveries on demand. Unlike third-party apps, we do not take commissions or add hidden fees. Instead, we charge a flat subscription, allowing restaurants to keep more revenue, drivers to earn fairly, and customers to avoid surprise charges.Website: chopchop.mobiOther URL: invest.fundinghope.com/offering/chop-chop/detailsBiographical Information: Troy Smith is the co-founder and CEO of Chop Chop, a logistics platform that helps restaurants run first-party delivery without relying on costly third-party apps. Food delivery apps offer a convenient service to get delicious food brought directly to your door. But they can also pose financial hazards that can derail even the tightest budget. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union   Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast.   It's hard to resist the ease and comfort of using a food delivery service.  Whether it's for lunch, dinner, or a few simple items you need from the local grocery store, these services bring the world to your doorstep.    Delivery app services like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Grubhub may be easy and convenient to use, but they can also be the reasons we find ourselves overspending on meals month over month.     Food delivery apps can often misguide us in various ways, and their impact on our budgets is significant. How do they influence our spending habits and finances?  Well, there's a chance you'll be paying more for the item than you would if you went to the store or restaurant yourself. Many restaurants list higher prices for items on delivery platforms to offset fees on their end. For example, a burger that costs $10 at the restaurant might be $12-$13 on the app. It's hard to say whether all restaurants increase pricing for items within the app, but I've noticed it a few times when I order some of my favorite treats from a local coffee shop in my neighborhood.   Another thing to keep in mind is that you can expect to pay additional fees, such as delivery and processing fees. For example, most platforms charge a delivery fee, which can range between $1.99 and $6.99, depending on the app, the distance for delivery, and demand. They can charge a service fee, typically a percentage of the order, such as 10-15%. Some apps will charge a small order fee if the order doesn't meet a minimum. And then there's, of course, the tip. Although tipping is optional, it's often expected and essential to give a little extra to the driver delivering your order. Considering all the fees, a $15 meal in person could become $25+ after the fees and the tip. Not exactly a budget breaker, but over time, those fees and tips can add up to a substantial amount of unexpected costs.     It's important to recognize that you are paying a premium for meals ordered through the apps. While delivery is undoubtedly convenient—especially when we aren't in the mood to prep, cook, and clean—the real money-saving option is cooking for yourself. On average, restaurant meals can cost up to five times more than making them at home. For instance, a deluxe cheeseburger might cost $4.63 to prepare at home, but it could cost $13.69 for takeout and $23.79 for delivery after the fees and tip are factored in. By consistently opting for food delivery, you'll end up spending considerably more on your meals. Sometimes the convenience of delivery is justifiable, but other times it's not worth the extra cost, so before opening the app to hunt for tonight's dinner, consider the significant cost savings of preparing the same meal at home.   So, we've covered the most significant way food delivery apps can cost you more. How can we help you enjoy the benefits of these apps without overspending? Here are a few ways to minimize the chances of overspending the next time you want to order out.    Opt for takeout and pick up the order yourself instead of paying more for delivery. You'll avoid all the added fees, and there's no need to tip a driver.    Avoid using the app and order directly from the restaurant. This can reduce the processing or service fees associated with ordering through an app.    Use a loyalty program to save. Most apps offer a loyalty program with zero delivery fees and other savings, albeit for a monthly fee. But if you find yourself using the apps frequently enough, do the math to determine if getting on a loyalty plan will save you money.   Set a monthly delivery budget to ensure you have money set aside for food delivery. This is an easy way to ensure you'll have the funds available to afford the joys of food delivery without the danger of overspending.   While food delivery services offer the ease and convenience of having delicious food and other household items delivered directly to our door, they can also lead to excessive overspending and the buildup of bad debt. It's crucial to remember that using these apps can be enjoyable, but they require discipline and financial awareness. With a bit of attention, planning, and discipline, we can all enjoy the benefit of using food delivery apps without damaging our finances.  If there are any other tips or topics you would like us to cover, let us know at tcupodcast@trianglecu.org. In a very special episode, Philippine Secretary of National Defense Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro sat down with co-host Ray Powell for an exclusive in-person interview at his Manila office, delivering insights into the Philippines' defense strategy to counter China's aggression in the West Philippine Sea.Secretary Teodoro emphasized that defending the Philippines matters globally because maritime violations anywhere threaten the international order. "If we are to preserve an international order, imperfect as it is, then we should care if anyone's country, no matter how small, is violated," Teodoro stated. He noted that China's approach appears focused on weakening alliances between the United States and its partners. The defense chief highlighted that multiple nations support the Philippines' stand, including Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and European G7 countries, all facing similar challenges from Chinese gray zone aggression.Secretary Teodoro outlined the Philippines' shift from its traditional post-invasion land defense to a proactive deterrent strategy called the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept. This multi-domain approach recognizes that modern conflicts begin with information warfare, cyber attacks, and hybrid operations before physical invasion. The strategy aims to secure the Philippines' 80% water, 20% land territory under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, protecting fishing grounds from Chinese coast guard, maritime militia and fishing vessels that have violated Philippine maritime rights and severely degraded its traditional fishing areas. The defense secretary discussed modernization efforts under the Re-Horizon 3 program, moving beyond the country's outdated 15-year planning cycles. Key investments he is pursuing include:- Strategic infrastructure and bases to fortify outer territorial boundaries- Secure connectivity and domain awareness across 2 million square kilometers of maritime area- Medium-range missile capabilities and multi-role fighters- Hybrid warfare tools, including drones and unmanned systems- Cognitive warfare capabilities to combat PRC disinformation- Force structure expansion beyond the current 162,000 personnel for a country of over 120 million.Teodoro addressed China's information warfare efforts, including attempts to censor “Food Delivery”, a West Philippine Sea documentary that recently won awards in New Zealand. He also discussed confrontational tabloid tactics by China Daily reporters at Singapore's Shangri-La Dialogue. The interview revealed the significant evolution of Philippine-Japan defense cooperation, with both nations facing similar Chinese territorial challenges. Japan's proposed "one-theater concept" creates an operational convergence between the US Indo-Pacific Command, Japan, the Philippines, and Australia, as does the country's recently approved Reciprocal Access Agreement with Japan.Teodoro addressed the impact on Filipino fishermen excluded from traditional fishing grounds at Scarborough Shoal. China has no right to exclude anyone from these waters, the secretary emphasized, according to international law and the landmark 2016 Arbitral Tribunal ruling. The defense chief noted how China's West Philippine Sea actions have become the primary catalyst for international convergence in opposition to Beijing, with countries recognizing that "if China can do it here, then other countries can do it in their own areas".Teodoro observed that 90% of Filipinos distrust China due to current leadership's actions, suggesting Chinese leadership will face accountability for damaging its international standing and uniting its adversaries in opposition.Sponsored by BowerGroupAsia

When you order food through Gojek or Grab in Indonesia, you're not just getting dinner delivered, but you're also participating in what has become a sophisticated digital platform economy. These food apps have fundamentally transformed how millions of Indonesians eat, shop, and navigate daily life, while generating billions in revenue for tech unicorns that now rival traditional media conglomerates in their cultural influence. But how exactly are these online food platforms reshaping Indonesian society? And what happens when we compare their impact across different cultural and economic contexts? A fascinating new study by Nadia Egalita, a PhD researcher at RMIT, offers insights into these questions through comparative ethnographic research conducted in Surabaya and Melbourne. Egalita's research reveals striking disparities in how online food delivery operates across class lines in Indonesia. While upper-middle-class families with domestic workers and dual kitchen systems allow children to order multiple meals daily, lower-middle-class households use these platforms primarily as treats for kids. Meanwhile, in Melbourne, rising costs have made food delivery a luxury that forces people back into their kitchens, challenging assumptions about technology inevitably replacing traditional cooking practices. Using innovative “digital walkthrough” methods that examine participants' actual ordering histories alongside their stated preferences, Egalita uncovers the gap between what people say they eat and what they actually consume. Her findings challenge common narratives about digital platforms isolating users, instead revealing how families bond over scrolling through menus and negotiating meal choices together. The research also offers fresh perspectives on platform capitalism, digital labor conditions, and the changing nature of domestic life in Indonesia and Australia. We'll explore how these seemingly simple convenience apps are actually reshaping everything from kitchen design to intergenerational relationships, while examining the regulatory challenges posed by Indonesia's growing platform oligarchy. In 2025, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales, Dr Jemma Purdey from the Australia-Indonesia Centre, Tito Ambyo from RMIT, and Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University.

This week begins with the anonymous claim of a man who believes he encountered something evil… something not human… while out delivering pizzas late on a Friday night. Did something order a meal to be delivered to them, and was that meal supposed to have been the person bringing the pizza instead of the pizza? Then, Dan covers the infamous Moberly-Jourdain  Incident.  Back in 1901, did two noted academics, Charlotte Ann Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain, slip over a hundred years out of their own time for several minutes while on a trip to France ?  It's a very thought-provoking and creepy tale. Lynze begins with a straightforward haunted house- just classic! She finishes up the show with a unique tale about that feeling known as the "call of the void".
