The United States is in an "epidemic of loneliness," according to the former U.S. surgeon general. The internet and social media have played a part in Americans suffering from isolation and mental health declines. But technology isn't all bad. We hear about apps that can help people make friends. Then, in her book "Do You Still Talk To Grandma?," Brit Barron explores what to do when the people we love have views and opinions that might be hurtful to us. She talks about empathy, the problems with social media and the hope for learning, open conversation and transformation. And, then nothing brings people together like food. Here & Now resident chef Kathy Gunst has been easing back into the kitchen after a tennis court fall sidelined her for over a month. Mike Goldsworthy - In a world with so much relational strife, we are spending time talking about how to be in relationship with those that we disagree with or, in some cases, how to know when it's time to bring that relationship to an end. This weekend, we explore an instance of this happening in the early church when two leaders chose two different approaches to this question, and we explore a framework for how we might think about the level of access and vulnerability we give to the different people in our lives. In this fun-filled interview with Emily, Heather tells the story of thinking she was straight for her whole life until one fateful comment on a YouTube video led her to question everything. She talks about exactly how she realized she was into women and not into men (despite a long list of ex-boyfriends), an electrifying first kiss, an exciting jump into the queer dating scene, and the joys and pains of coming out as a lesbian. In true Heather fashion, she busts out her journal to share a vulnerable entry, gets candid about signs of attraction to women she missed early in life, and shares the deep research that helped her come to terms with her sexuality after a life of thinking that "straight" was the only option. On Christ the King Sunday, Britt invites us to consider how the path of suffering that Jesus modeled is, in fact, the path of power.
Brit spent the first part of her life in the evangelical church and eventually became a pastor at a mega church at the ripe age of 26. After “peaking too soon”, she started to understand more about herself, her dreams and her sexuality. She met a woman named Sami that changed, saved and transformed her whole life. We talk with Brit about how meeting Sami, leaving the church, coming out and getting married have given Brit a deep seated passion for reminding people that choosing freedom is always worth it no matter the cost. We share how our perspectives have changed since originally starting the church that we led and how it's okay to change your mind, even as people of faith and leaders. We talk about “the fear spiral” and the kinds of fears that keep us from evolving beyond the narratives that have been handed to us by others. We can't avoid or outrun these fears, but if we face them and move through them, we'll find out that it was so worth it! Brit is a currently a pastor at New Abbey Church, and is a sought after speaker in the areas of personal development, race, gender and sexuality and lives with Sami in southern California with their dog Charles Barkley and their house full of plants that they treat like children. www.britbarron.com Instagram @britbarron Twitter @britbarronco

Brit and Sami Barron’s story begins with a choice, and a really tough one at that. The now-married couple met at church where they started out as best friends. At the time, neither of them had openly come out as lesbian, however, as they began to grow closer it was clear to them that this was more than just a friendship, this was love. While the two were excited about their newfound love, they were faced with quite the dilemma; they both worked at a church that was against same-sex relationships. Sami was the creative director at this church and Brit had just accepted a new job there as a college pastor. However, when the two began to recognize their true feelings for each other, they knew the church would not tolerate it so they were forced to keep it a secret. After keeping their relationship a secret for a little while, the couple decided that “love deserves more then the four walls we [are] living in” and decided to go public with their relationship, regardless of the consequences. They quit their jobs at the church and notified their family and friends of their decision to be together. The response to this news was mixed, however, Brit and Sami chose love over everything. The process of going public with their relationship led to many struggles, yet they remained strong. They received negative pushback from the church, lost multiple friends, and were turned down by family members who refused to even acknowledge their relationship. While this was discouraging and difficult at first, as time went on they began to realize that no matter what anyone else said, they knew that their love was good and true. Fast forward a couple years, the two are happily married and building a life together. Brit recently came out with her first book, “Worth It”, and they are planning to release their new podcast in February titled, “The Everyday Lesbians”. While they still deal with the struggle of losing friends over their love, they have learned to keep moving forward and love each other above all else. In Brit and Sami’s episode of The Love Intently Podcast, we chat more about how the couple met and fell in love, their decision to quit their jobs to be together, losing family and friends due to their love, and so much more. Tune in for a beautiful story of choosing love no matter the consequences and see below for a full list of lessons/topics covered in this episode with Brit and Sami. To be together wasn’t something that wasn't showcased or even open in our community, so we had to jump over a lot of hurdles to get there” - Falling in love with the same sex while working at a church “Feeling something so natural and so good, and having it collide with the world you existed in was really, really traumatic.” - Their decision to come out as a couple, despite the consequences “Love deserves more than the four walls we were living in.” - Quitting their jobs to be together “If I have to decide between love and anything else, I’m going to choose [love].” - Dealing with pushback and judgement of their decision to be together “No matter how this person responds, I know who I am, I know who I love, I know that it’s good and it's true, and I’m going to be okay.” - Why they got “19” tattooed on their wrists “We were ready to fight” - The pain of losing friends for coming out “We have to keep moving forward.” - How the enneagram has helped them better understand one another - Truths about life and love: “Be honest, be gentle, be kind, and stay amazed.” - How to deal with conflict in a relationship “You have to get comfortable with conflict. Do I want to be right or solve this conflict?” -What does love intently mean to Brit and Sami: “It does not mean dismissing yourself; it means caring for yourself so that you can care for the other person too.” Resources Worth It - Brit Barron Connect with Brit and Sami Brit’s Instagram: Sami’s Instagram Brit’s Website Connect with Sophie: (Sophie’s Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sophkwok/ Love Intently Instagram https://www.instagram.com/love.intently/ Love Intently Website https://loveintently.com ) “Feeling something so natural and so good, and having it collide with the world you existed in was really, really traumatic.” -Brit Barron
Brit Barron talks about her journey from being raised in an Evangelical mega-church to coming out after falling in love. Brit shares “behind-the-scenes” information about the church's positions on LGBTQ inclusion and the misleading language they use to come across as "accepting". Listen for some great advice on how we can use the strength it takes to hide, to become fully realized, and to choose freedom over fear. https://britbarron.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Worth-Overcome-Your-Fears-Embrace/dp/1506463274 Don't forget to sink your teeth into... www.theforbiddenapplepodcast.com

What's the difference between happiness and joy? And how about joy and fear? It seems like an obvious answer, right? But what if joy and fear were much more similar to each other than joy and happiness? Today's guest is full of amazing insight -- insight that she's sharing with us today, but also as one of our keynote speakers at the SheCares Wellness Summit! You may know her as Rachel Hollis' BFF or author of the book Worth It, but today you get a deeper look into who Brit Barron really is and how her journey has shaped her into who she is today. Brit spent the first part of her life in the evangelical church and eventually became a pastor at a megachurch at the ripe age of 26. After peaking too soon, she started to understand more about herself, her dreams, and her sexuality. She met a woman named Sami that changed, saved, and transformed her whole life. Meeting Sami, leaving the church, coming out, and getting married has given Brit a deep-seated passion for reminding people that choosing freedom is always worth it no matter the cost. And an equal passion for finding joy every single day, making time to have as much fun as possible on this journey called life. During her SheCares workshop, she'll talk about how to make decisions for YOU. How do we overcome the idea that being selfish is bad and embrace the reality that when we are able to make decisions for ourselves, be true to who we are - we create an environment for those around us to do the same? Get your ticket to find out! ----- Looking for more She in your life?
In this episode of Trailercast I get to sit down and talk to my good friend Brit Barron. Brit is an author, speaker, pastor, anti-racist educator and her first book Worth It is out now! Brit grew up in an Evangelical megachurch in the '90s, trying to fit neatly inside the boundaries her church and its narrow view of God had placed around her. She was boxed in by her fears, unable to realize her full potential. All that changed when she met a girl named Sami, fell in love, and chose to leave behind those narrow boundaries in favor of a fuller and more vibrant life. In Worth It, Brit tells her story to inspire all of us to overcome our own fears--the kinds of fears that keep us from evolving beyond the narratives that have been handed to us by others. We can't avoid or outrun these fears, but if we face them, we'll find out that it was so worth it. In this episode of Trailercast, you get to hear a sneak peak into Chapter 7, and listen in to us discuss the way that our lives intersected in such a way that brought us all more fullness and deeper freedom. When Brit Barron fell in love with her wife, she was a pastor at an evangelical megachurch. As you might guess, it wasn't the kind of place that would've allowed, much less nurtured their relationship. She sat down to talk about that experience, and, even more, what it's like to make impossibly hard choices that lead to freedom. To hear even more of her story, check out her new book Worth It. You can find out what she's up to at https://britbarron.com/.

This week, Alex Gervasi brings BACK a friend of the show: pastor, author, and all-around badass, Brit Barron! Brit is back to talk about the recent release of her book 'Worth It' as well as how she overcomes fear, embraces change, and finds freedom in her life. Brit also shares the most LOL story about LL Cool J that you *need* to hear.
In today’s episode, I chat with my good friend, Brit Barron, who just released her very first book. And let me tell ya, it’s so freakin’ good! It’s called WORTH IT: Overcome Your Fears And Embrace The Life You Were Made For. This book shares stories from Brit’s life -- such as going from being a megachurch pastor to coming out and leaving the church, her experience of being a Black woman in America, and other experiences that illustrate how she was living fearfully inside of a framework that someone else had created. She so bravely shows her story of growth and also challenges her readers to break out of their own box and step into who they are meant to be. This week I thought it would be great if I could bring you not one lesson, but five! Think of it like a choose-your-own-adventure, only instead of a whodunit, it's a podcast that meets you where you're at. Are you four months into quarantine and feeling like your home is more of a prison than a respite? I've got a lesson for you on organization at home. Is social media burnout leading you to second-guess your goals? I've got a lesson on that as well. The reason I was able to bring so many ideas in this one episode is because the lessons I'm sharing with you come from my Quibi series, the Rachel Hollis Show. If you're wondering, "wait a minute Rach, how come I haven't seen this Rachel Hollis Show?" - well, it's because the show is exclusive to Quibi, and you're the first-ever audience outside of that platform to hear these lessons! If you like what you hear, and you want to see tons more content including some really fun stuff like DIY projects, cooking shows, and special guests, keep reading to learn how to access Quibi for free:If you haven't checked out Quibi yet, you're in luck! With all that’s going on in the news, what does it mean for companies to be silent on issues of race? Questions like this can be overwhelming to think about but today’s guest, Brit Barron, is an expert who can help us address some of these difficult topics. Brit Barron has over 10 years of experience as a speaker and educator teaching corporations how they can initiate meaningful changes towards anti-racism. She shares how meeting her wife led her from being a church pastor to her work now and how we as a society can mobilize discomfort to move beyond just acting in the cultural moment. Brit also gives us a sneak peek into her new memoir, Worth It, and shares what inspired her to write it. You can find the awesome Brit Barron on Instagram at @britbarron and order her book Worth It here . Get to know our hosts on Instagram @CaitlinCrosby and @AllieBridge. We are honored to have Brit Barron with us on the podcast this week! Brit Barron is an author, anti-racism activist, pastor and public speaker who is dedicated to having honest conversations. As a person of color, Brit grew up in predominately white spaces, and as a part of the American Evangelical church. On today’s podcast we got the opportunity to reflect with Brit on the events of the past few weeks including George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Brit gives a poignant view of racism in America, the racial blindspot of the Evangelical church, practical steps for those who want to know more about historical context of racism in America and the truth that unless it’s personal to each of us, real change will not happen. In addition to her thoughtful and wise comments., Brit released an “Understanding Racism 101 Guide” to help us all become anti-racist. You can learn more and purchase it here: https://britbarron.com/racism101 For more information about Brit, you can find her on Instagram: @BritBarron or her website at https://britbarron.com If you’d like to see what her church is all about visit: https://www.newabbey.org/ or @newabbeychurch Learn more about the VOX Podcast: www.voxpodcast.com Subscribe on iTunes - apple.co/1Lla1Nj Support the VOX Podcast on Patreon: www.patreon.com/voxpodcast Follow us on Instagram: @voxpodcast Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/voxpodcast Follow Mike on Twitter: www.twitter.com/mikeerre Music in this episode by Timothy John Stafford www.timothyjohnstafford.com Instagram & Twitter: @GoneTimothy

Series - Character Matters Topic - Interdependence Speaker - Brit Barron www.eastlakecc.com
Alex Gervasi brings in her friends Brit Barron (pastor, speaker and author) and Dr. Jessica Barron (sociologist, demographer and author) to have a really honest conversation about race and racism - specifically in America. While they couldn't touch on everything, Alex, Brit and Dr. Barron tried their best to provide insight and break down the heavier topic. We hope what these two accomplished sisters (yes, sisters!!) share sheds light and helps educate those who might not have had a conversation surrounding race like this before.
This week, technology got the best of us and a WONDERFUL episode ended up being completely unusable. Yay! So here's a bonus episode with guest Brit Barron who tells hilarious stories of misidentifying celebrities... and Alex Gervasi shares her story of the WORST nail appointment of all time.
It’s Pride Month, so this episode is dedicated to spreading the gay agenda! Whitney Gaston joins us again to spread some queer joy and insight. We also dive into the history of Pride, its significance in the liberation of LGBTQ+ people, tips for celebrating (or not celebrating), and lots of shameless plugs centered around our favorite queer creators, artists, activists, and leaders. Series - HUMANIFESTO Speaker - Brit Barron www.eastlakecc.com
Brit Barron, pastor at New Abbey in Los Angeles and Spiritual Director of The Christian Closet, spent the weekend in Portland with her wife Sami. Sharing time with them was an incredible gift to our community and Brit’s message encourages us about our role in the healing and repair of our world - right here and now.Keep up with Brit on britbarron.com and Instagram
Wow, wow, wow. This guest. Her mission… Brit Barron is the co-founder of Other Dreamers Culture Consultants and a speaker, writer and diversity and inclusion trainer. Brit spends a lot of time thinking about and talking about how race, gender and sexuality and spirituality interact with our everyday lives and our work. Brit is obsessed with finding new ways to connect people and things that have been told they should not go together. She has a bachelors and masters degrees in psychology and is probably already analyzing me as I type this! Brit has spoken all over the country, she has a TED talk about Beyonce and race in America and she is ready to share her expertise with you! I was introduced to you by the women dynamo Emily Sexton (remember her LIFE CHANGING episode?!). Emily consulted Brit to ensure that her business was casting a wide net and ensuring that every woman felt heard, seen, and valued. And wow, is Brit the perfect person for the job! In this episode you will learn how to easily cultivate a network of connection and support, pioneer change and inclusion in your workplace (...and your life!), find genuine community, tackle the “hard” topics, and how to truly live a life that exemplifies “community over competition.” You in? "At the end of the day, we are BETTER TOGETHER than separate. Governments with more women involved have higher rates of peace. Companies with higher amounts of people with color in leadership, do better economically because they reach more markets... so yes, we are better together. But first, we have to deal with why those people weren't at the table to begin with." Simply put, Brit knows her stuff. She is an expert on inclusion: from her unique personal perspective to statistics all the way to tangible action steps, Brit is reminding us every day that "people matter." Always, and in all ways. This. Woman. Boundary-breaking, unifying, inspiring... every possible positive adjective I could write. She is something so rare and the way that she talks about things that matter is so inspiring to me. Goal Diggers, the magic in this episode could change your life- and I know I always say this, but you cannot miss it. Like really, click "play" now. Okay?
