This week, the Pugsters are excited to welcome poet, priest, and theologian Malcolm Guite to the show. Chris leads off the conversation with Mariner, Guite’s biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge which uniquely among studies of Coleridge brings out the importance of his return to Trinitarian Christianity to his life. The conversation uses Coleridge’s life and work as a jumping off point to move on to other topics, including Lewis’s concept of joy and the nature and importance of imagination. It’s a fascinating discussion with a fascinating individual, and we think you’ll find it as stimulating as we did. Word Beneath the Words with Malcolm GuiteWe're joined on our podcast by poet, priest and songwriter, Malcolm Guite. With grace and insight, Malcolm has written of the mystery, beauty and imaginative force of language and the ways in which our imaginations apprehend truth that our reason cannot fully comprehend:“Jesus says, love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your strength, and all your mind. And somewhere in all those ‘alls' is all your imagination.  And in fact, when we look at the teaching of Jesus, it's mostly an appeal to the imagination as a way of perceiving truth in a fresh way. He tells stories and parables.”We trust that you'll be inspired by the beauty of Guite's poetry, and by the ways in which the poetic imagination brings healing to the false divide between the subjective and the objective.04:44 The Connection Between the Priestly and Poetic Vocations12:02 The Role of Imagination in Apprehending Truth17:48 The Responsibility of Language and the Power of Words23:24 The Idea of Being Spoken into Being32:25 The Destructive Power of Words36:23 The Importance of Intellectual HospitalityThis podcast is an edited version of an online conversation recorded in 2024.

What does hope look like for the American church as political polarization sparks division and many evangelicals are leaving the pews? It might be found in the words of the British “Poet for ‘Bruised Evangelicals,'” Malcolm Guite. The poet, priest, singer-songwriter, and professor joined Russell to talk about truth, imagination, and illumination. Guite and Moore discuss how they know the Christian story is true, depictions of the gospel in art, and what it means to learn to love. They talk about the power of stories and imagination. Moore asks Guite to share his thoughts on the transfiguration passage in the New Testament, which Guite explores in his book Lifting the Veil. And they talk about how to begin reading poetry for those who don't know where to start. Welcome to the second episode of Faith Made Welcome, a progressive podcast on faith brought to you by Commonwealth Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. This episode is the second installment in our “What The World Needs Now” series.  This four-week “study” of sorts features discussions and reflection sparked from a special activist sermon series CBC and several other congregations are taking part in this month. Each week in August, an activist preacher is giving us their take on the theme. Today’s episode is based upon a sermon of this series, which you can watch on our Youtube Channel, preached by Sandhya Jha, who is ordained in the Disciples of Christ Church, and who describes herself on her website as “comfortable in the pulpit, on the picket line or hanging out with friends and friends-to-be over a good cup of tea and a good story.”In this episode of the podcast, CBC Pastors Robin and Marty Anderson are joined by CBC’s Coordinator of Religious Education, Courtney Hodge, and CBC deacon and general podcast enthusiast Cheri Spiegel grabbed their own cups of tea and settled in for a conversation about covenants, contracts, and the Christian community. About Sandhya JhaSandhya Jha is the founder/director of the Oakland Peace Center, a collective of 40 organizations that creates access, equity and dignity for all in the Oakland/Bay area. She has also authored several books including Pre-Post Racial America: Spiritual Stories from the Front Lines, Transforming Communities: How People Like You are Healing Their Neighborhoods, and Liberating Love: 365 Love Notes from God. Scripture Mentioned this EpisodeIn case you’re prepping for your own Bible drills (Marty got the blue ribbon this week), here are the scriptures mentioned this episode.Psalm 103: 15-18Acts 10Matthew 22:37 Additional Materials Mentioned this EpisodeOctavia Butler We mention Octavia Butler’s novel Dawn, which presents the idea that humanity suffers from an inherently incompatible pairing of characteristics: we are both hierarchical and intelligent.CBC’s Church Covenant: We talk through some of the details of our church’s own covenant statement.Depeche Mode:  We accidentally (but maybe on purpose) make reference to “Personal Jesus”Ava DuVernay: We mention her documentary, 13th (2016), which Jha also cites. This important film looks at the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in our country.Grey’s Anatomy:  We reference this show as an example about how a certain kind of contract (the prenup) can play out. If you’re worried about a spoiler, the episode in question is like four years old, catch up!Malcolm Guite: We mention Guite’s concept of Covenanted Discomfort from the Work of the People video by the same name.Lisa Sharon Harper and Jen Hatmaker:  We indirectly reference their Facebook Live conversation about  “White Women’s Toxic Tears” Father Richard Rohr: We reference one of his posts on the Center for Action and Contemplation website, called “Jesus’ Social Program.” About This PodcastThis podcast was envisioned as means to foster spiritual growth and conversations about faith, both within and beyond the faith community at Commonwealth Baptist Church. At the open of this episode, we discuss what spiritual formation means to our CBC pastors and the role community plays in our concept of faith. Got a question or want to reach out to the Faith Made Welcome team?  You can reach us at faithmadewelcome@gmail.com. Faith Made Welcome is produced by Cheri Spiegel, Paul Fitzgerald and This Most Unbelievable Life. A Note on the Links in these ShownotesWhere possible the links to books mentioned in this episode direct to Old Town Books.   "It is an ancient Mariner, And he stoppeth one of three. 'By thy long grey beard and glittering eye, Now wherefore stopp'st thou me?'" This is the opening stanza to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 1798 poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, an epic saga of sin, remorse, regret and redemption set in the tale of an aged sailor, telling of his woes to someone about to enter into a wedding celebration.   Why poetry in the midst of a pandemic, though? What does Coleridge have to say to us in 2020?  Much in every way. In April of this year, several celebrities took turns reading The Rime of the Ancient Mariner online (https://bit.ly/Ancient_Mariner). It was a surprising success. As The Atlantic noted in May (https://bit.ly/TheAtlanticMag), it is a poem written in 1798 for people in 2020. Though over two centuries removed from our own, there appears within Coleridge's verse a timeless resonance with our own turbulent times.   Indeed, poetry, parable, metaphor, and the imagination are absolutely essential for our ongoing defense of the Christian faith in the cultural darkness in which we find ourselves. On part two of my discussion with Malcolm Guite, we talk more about Coleridge's influence on Guite's thought and the important role imagination plays in our conversations about everything from moonlight to the glory of God.  Malcolm Guite is an Anglican Priest and is the Chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge where he also teaches for the Divinity Faculty. He lectures widely in England and North America on theology and literature. Mr. Guite has published poetry, theology, and literary criticism, and worked as a librettist. His books include Word in the Wilderness, Faith, Hope and Poetry: Theology and the Poetic Imagination, and Mariner: A Voyage with Samuel Taylor Coleridge.  BONUS LINKS: Here are some additional resources: Malcolm Guite Blog: https://bit.ly/GuiteBlog A Spell in the Library, Malcolm Guite's YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/MalcolmGuite Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Poetry Foundation: https://bit.ly/SamuelColeridge FREE: We are also offering a free subscription to our bimonthly Profiles here: www.watchman.org/Free. What role does the faculty of the imagination play in our defense of the Christian faith? Is the imagination inferior to logic and reason or is it a needful aspect in our engagement with contemporary culture?  Consider the incredible popularity of the movies and TV drama series. We are storytellers, image bearers of our Creator, who delight in creating, whether it be stories, buildings, automobiles, or works of art or literature, we are constantly using our imagination, often without thinking about it. On this episode of Apologetics Profile, Watchman staff apologist Daniel Ray speaks with poet, priest, and author Malcolm Guite about the necessity of the imagination in cultivating a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world that God has created and for the way God communicates with us. In part one, we talk about how Malcolm became interested in poetry as a child and how the poetry and philosophy of the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge played an integral role in Malcolm coming to faith in Christ.
