Episode 317: As the new year dawned, the first emerging artist that started buzzing on our radar was a California native living in Nashville with an emotional country-noir debut album called Silver Rounds. She was Olivia Wolf, and now months later, her album has proven its staying power, with critical acclaim and a long run on the Americana chart. She's no youngster, so our conversation dives into her background and her long, patient journey to fully committing herself as a songwriter/artist. That story includes coming of age at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival and a tragic event in her life that inspired many of her best songs.
"What I Deserve" Over the course of almost fifteen albums, Kelly Willis has made a pretty good case that she's one of the greats. The Oklahoma-born singer/songwriter is not only a beautiful and affecting singer, her phrasing is filled with purring vowels, consonants fearlessly taking sharp corners and delicious diction which powers each number with authority, vulnerability and grace. Willis' career has a pretty good stockpile of highlights and here's a few for you: She's collaborated with Allison Kraus, Vince Gill, Jay Faraar of Son Volt and Chuck Prophet, a few of her songs were in Thelma and Louise, she was in the movie Bob Roberts, she's played all over the world, including Hardly Strictly Bluegrass here in San Francisco, put out a holiday album with her ex-husband Bruce Robison and is now celebrating the 25th anniversary of her 1999 album What I Deserve. And what to say about that album? Well, it's an absolute classic and the new edition is a must-have. Kelly is really sweet and very honest and this was a delight. www.kellywillis.com (http://www.kellywillis.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com Instagram: @emberspodcast Bluesky: @emberspodcast Editor: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
Matt and Rob sit down with ISMAY to talk about their new album Desert Pavement. We go into other topics like the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (in which their grandfather founded and their family still runs), the documentary Finding Lucinda (about the great singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams), Ismay's time working on a ranch with they're mother, the Stranger in the Barn video (and the puppet!) and much more! We had such a great time talking to ISMAY. They are such a down to earth beautiful soul you won't want to miss this interview! ... and who doesn't like talking about puppets ? ******** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ISMAY AND THEIR NEWEST RELEASE: For Avery Hellman, the Bay Area native behind ISMAY's unique sound, the album builds a bridge between past and present. "I create music that's informed by older traditions and makes you feel the way old folk music does," they say, "but it doesn't sound like something you've heard before." Like Songs of Sonoma Mountain, ISMAY's critically acclaimed debut, Desert Pavement was heavily influenced by the California ranch where Hellman spent most of their 20s working the land. "My mom bought the ranch when I was 19 years old," Hellman remembers. "Environmental restoration was very important to her, and I was with her every step of the way, working to develop the ranch, raise cattle, replant creeks, and tend to the sheep. The perspective of my songwriting is very rooted in ranch life." ************ You can find ISMAY at www.ismaymusic.com , Facebook and Instagram (@ismaymusic) Be sure to listen to their great new album DESERT PAVEMENT today! ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. On today's episode, I talk to musician Avery Hellman AKA ISMAY. Originally from the Bay Area, Avery grew up surrounded by music - their grandfather founded the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival - but didn't think they would pursue making music professionally until a crisis propelled them in that direction. Their first album Songs of Sonoma Mountain was released in 2020, and their latest album Desert Pavement was just released last week, and it's great! “If Steve Earle weren't a living, breathing person, he'd be a character in a blues song,” observed a reviewer. Earle is foremost a musician, one who started out in Nashville as a songwriter. Along the way, this self-proclaimed “hardcore troubadour,” has been married seven times, conquered drug addiction, did a stint in jail, and lost nearly everything as he fed that addiction. But in the end, the power of music won through. Today, Earle is known for his accomplished musicianship, his way with lyrics, and his outspoken politics. He's won buckets of awards, including three Grammys, recorded 22 albums, and his song, “Copperhead Road,” has become the official state song of Tennessee. Earle is in town for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival which he will be headlining. We'll talk to Earle about his songwriting, his music, and hear him sing some tunes. Guests: Steve Earle, singer, songwriter. Earle has received three Grammy awards for his folk albums. He will be appearing that Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco. Mick Hellman, drummer for the Go to Hell Man Band, the Wreckless Strangers and Marco & the Polos; founder and managing partner, HMI Capital. Hellman's father, Warren Hellman, founded the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival.

No Border Blues Episode 2: Features Sony Music recording artist Aki Kumar. Aki left his native home in Mumbai, India for San Jose CA with the intention of working as a software engineer. Then he discovered the sounds of the blues, and his life changed dramatically. Aki worked his way from selling merch at Mark Hummel's Harmonica Blowouts (a successful revue that featured some of the very best blues harp players alive -- James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza, Charlie Musselwhite, Billy Boy Arnold, etc) to being a featured artist on the show. He developed a following in the Bay Area and began touring in Russia, Scandinavia, the UK and South America and was well received as a traditional Chicago/West Coast traditional blues artist. But by 2016, he started feeling a need to expand his musical vision. "Aki Goes to Bollywood" on Little Village Foundation, is the first "Bollywood Blues" recording -- blending elements of Indian music into his musical and visual presentation, making for a multi-cultural mash-up that sounds like no one else, yet never loses touch with its blues foundation. Aki has made multiple appearances at The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival and has been featured on PRI “The World”. noborderblues.com - chicagobluesnetwork.com - johnnyburgin.com Learn more about your ad choices. Banjo player, singer, songwriter, percussive-dancer, choreographer and square-dance caller, Evie has always been surrounded by music – credit to her upbringing as daughter of an international folk dance teacher, and an old-time folk music devotee, she grew up thinking that playing music, dancing, singing with others was what people do. Though entrenched in the traditional cultural arts of Appalachia, her home was in New York City, Baltimore, now Oakland – in cities, not mountains. But tradition bearers came through and played in her living room, with weekends spent at music festivals and house parties. Evie's performances, recordings and teaching reconnect Appalachian music/dance with other African-Diaspora traditions, and have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Lincoln Center, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to Celtic Connections. Evie tours internationally with Keith Terry and her Evie Ladin Band; and has produced numerous albums and instructional DVDs. Writing clever, engaging songs, for her neo-trad kinetic roots band with Keith Terry & Erik Pearson, in 2019 they released two CDs: the band's fourth album of adventurous originals, Caught On A Wire, and Riding the Rooster, totally traditional, raging fiddle/banjo duets, quickly followed by a 2020 EP of favorite cover songs Playing Our Hand. In the percussive dance world, Evie directs the moving choir MoToR/dance for live performance and award winning dance films, is Executive Director, artist and choreographer with the International Body Music Festival, and an ace freestyle flatfooter. She is a 2020 Jubilation Fellow, awarded to artists with an exceptional talent for bringing joy to people through music and movement. In the traditional music world, Evie calls rowdy community square dances, and teaches clawhammer banjo, old time harmony singing and more. An electric and entertaining live performer, Evie really enjoys balancing performance with facilitating arts learning in diverse communities. Evie Ladin is a natural entertainer with a gift for infusing folk practices with contemporary verve. —SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE For more on Evie, please visit: https://evieladin.com/ Tracks listed in this episode: You Gotta Be Hunting The Buffalo Have It All News Cyclone

NEFESH MOUNTAIN is the place where the Jewish spirit and soul meet with Bluegrass and Old-Time musical traditions. Husband and Wife team Eric Lindberg & Doni Zasloff are pioneering this blend of Jewish Americana throughout the country, bringing their unique knowledge and passion for both Jewish and Bluegrass traditions to the fore, singing English and Hebrew songs alike. As a duo, Doni & Eric alternate lead and harmony vocals while switching between instruments, using the drive of the Banjo, intrigue of the Guitar, nuance of the Mandolin, and visceral sound of the Dobro. EVIE LADIN & KEITH TERRY are innovative musicians/dancers with a quirky neo-trad soul. This Oakland, California-based duo throw down original folk songs and deep interpretations of old songs, with the kinetic thrill of percussive dance. A prolific singer-songwriter, percussive dancer and square dance caller, the polyrhythmic heat of Evies clawhammer banjo has been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass while Terry is a master percussionist and a collaborator with a host of inventive performers from Bobby McFerrin, Turtle Island Quartet, Tex Williams and Robin Williams. The just released their third record, JUMP THE FIRE. WoodSongs Kid: Kentucky Just Us is a family bluegrass band from Greensburg, Kentucky.

Rob Hochschild | September 10, 2013 As talented a songwriter as student Molly Tuttle is, music fans who have seen her perform live are immediately impressed as well with her virtuosic skill as a flatpicking guitarist and her ability as a clawhammer and fingerstyle banjo player. But for Tuttle fans, it always comes back to the song and the voice. She's been performing on stage since she was 11, and recorded her first album at age 13. She’s appeared at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Strawberry Music Festival, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, and numerous other festivals and venues across the country. And Tuttle has won awards as songwriter, vocalist, or guitarist from a number of organizations. You can watch a video version of the song featured in this podcast, recorded in the studios at Berklee's internet radio station, the BIRN. The track features Tuttle, guitar and vocals; John Mailander, fiddle and voice; and Matt Witler, mandolin. Tuttle and Mailander perform at Club Passim on September 12, 2013, as part of Berklee's Summer in the City series.
