What a CreepHarry Powers: The Inspiration for “The Night of the Hunter”Season 27, Episode 3Harry Powers, often called the "Lonely Hearts Killer," was a notorious American serial killer active in the early 1930s. Born Herman Drenth in the Netherlands in 1892, he emigrated to the United States and eventually settled in West Virginia. Powers used personal ads in newspapers to target his victims, posing as a lonely, wealthy bachelor seeking companionship. He lured women, often widows or divorcées, with promises of marriage and financial security. In 1931, Powers was arrested and charged with the murders of Asta Eicher, a widow from Illinois, her three children, and another woman named Dorothy Lemke from Massachusetts. His murders were shockingly brutal; he confined his victims in a hidden room in his garage before killing them. After murdering his victims, Powers took their money and belongings. Powers' trial received extensive media coverage due to the horrific details and his manipulative use of "lonely hearts" ads. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to death, being hanged on March 18, 1932, in Moundsville, West Virginia. His crimes have inspired books and films, solidifying his infamy as a symbol of betrayal in love and trust. Harry Powers was also a significant inspiration for the novel and subsequent film The Night of the Hunter. The novel was written by Davis Grubb in 1953 and adapted into a film in 1955. This plump trickster bilked love-hungry widows out of thousands before going bananas and killing people in his creepy West Virginia garage. The demand to view his trial was so spectacular that it was held in an opera house, a venue that went from showcasing tenors to showcasing terrors. Rozmowy o pięciu seryjnych zabójcach. To pierwsza część antologii, która zawiera odcinki o takich sprawcach, jak: Harry Powers, Adolf Seefeld, Ion Rimaru, Edward Paisnel, Peter Kurten.
Harry Powers was a West Virginia serial killer who used local advertisements and false personas to catch unsuspecting people, which we in modern society are no strangers to ourselves. Izzy and Harper touch upon the similarities to our era and why this case teaches us so much. The world that Harry Powers committed his murders in might have been a different world than the one we live in today, but his monstrous tactics are just as effective.
Harry Powers to seryjny morderca, który został powieszony w 1932 roku. Należał do klanu "sinobrodych", czyli zabójców swoich partnerek. Posłuchajcie mojej pierwszej rozmowy z Michałem Bajerem o mało znanych seryjnych mordercach.
March 18th: Harry F. Powers Executed (1932) The pursuit of love can sometimes place people in the direct path of someone dangerous. On March 18th 1932 a man was sent to the gallows for a prolific career as a Bluebeard. Sarah recently got an audiobook by Fifty Cent and that is the most light hearted part of this episode. In this Prayer Chain Investigates, Suzie tells a sinister story about a letter writing Romeo that turns out to be an actual monster in West Virginia. "That was a DM back 'en." Listen to this twisted tale of the despicable, vile, and disgusting; Harry Powers. Trigger warning: although we do not go into detail this story does involve murder, death, hangings.
In the 1930s Harry Powers used several aliases to correspond with lonely women he promised to marry. In 1931 five bodies were discovered on his Quiet Dell, West Virginia farm that was dubbed The Murder Farm. Want more Southern Mysteries? During the early years of the Great Depression, the crimes of Harry Powers appalled and fascinated thousands of people, but he is barely remembered today – much like the methods that he used to find his victims. He sought out women through matrimonial mail-order ads, seeking wives to live on his peaceful West Virginia farm. We're going back in time to 1955 once again with Charles Laughton's supreme tale of spine-tingling suspense: The Night of The Hunter starring the incomparable Robert Mitchum as Reverend Harry Powell and co-starring Shelly Winters, The First Lady of American Cinema Lillian Gish, a young, pre-Mission Impossible Peter Graves and child actors Billy Chapin and Sally Jane Bruce . I'm joined by my dedicated devotees in extraordinary exhibitions of film snobbery Roseanne Caputi and Gordon Alex Robertson. Welcome to you both! And now the synopsis:Loosely based on the life of a Dutch born American serial killer named Harry Powers, The Night of The Hunter depicts the events in the life of one “ Reverend” Harry Powell, a twisted woman-hating con man-- either posing as a man of God, or worse yet, believes himself to be one, who, while in prison for auto theft, learns of a $10,000 dollar jackpot hidden somewhere in the house of his cellmate Ben Harper who is hanged for murder. Released from prison, Powell seeks out Harper's widow Willa and her children John and Pearl. Ingratiating himself into the good graces of the town's citizens with his smooth talk and Religious bluster, Powell marries Willa then tries to find the secret of the money from John and Pearl who swore to their father that they would never reveal the location of the money, which is hidden in Pearl's favorite rag doll. After murdering Willa and learning the secret of the money, the reverend almost succeeds in killing the children but is outwitted by clever and resourceful John and a haunting chase down the Ohio River begins. Who wins? Does Evil Triumph? What does it all mean?Find out!
Its weird that when you talk to the older generation the “back in my day' quote seems to always pop up. I even catch myself doing it to my kids sometimes when it comes to how I was raced and the hard time my siblings and I faced in comparison to their upbringing. But the more and more I do research on some cases and I have come to realize that the “back in my day” doesn't hold a lot of weight when we actually think about it, especially when it comes to murder and the seven deadly sins, that for a fact has remained the same men walked on this rotating rock.Follow me on instagram @pic_dynamicduo, Facebook and Twitter @Partners N Crime Podcast.
The Night of the Hunter (1955) This one and only film masterpiece directed by Charles Laughton and starring Shelly Winters, Lillian Gish and Robert Mitchum is considered the second best American film. The film tells the story of a corrupt minister turned serial killer who attempts to charm an unsuspected widow and steal $10,000 dollars hidden by her executed husband. Based on the true story of Harry Powers who was hanged in 1932 for the murder of two widows and three children in West Virginia. The film has a lyrical and expressionistic style that is influenced by films of the silent era. The love/hate tattoos across Mitchum's fingers would become an iconic image in itself. Looper (2014) Written and directed by Rian Johnson and starring Emily Blunt, Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt would gross 170million against its 30million budget. The story revolves around Loopers, hired by criminal syndicates from the future to terminate victims that they send through time. Some of the film takes place in Shanghai to appeal to a Chinese audience. The film would make several top ten lists for that year. In August of 1931, police searching a farm in Quiet Dell, West Virginia made a gruesome discovery: five bodies, three of them children, buried in a shallow drainage ditch. The women had been lured to the farm with the promise of marriage by Harry Powers, a serial killer who would later become known as the Bluebeard of Quiet Dell. In popular culture, Harry Powers became Harry Powell, the itinerant preacher and terrifying antagonist of the 1953 novel, The Night of the Hunter, by Davis Grubb, and its 1955 film adaptation.
