Many dog lovers have experienced the insidious cancer hemangiosarcoma, which develops in the blood vessels. But caller Lou has a question about cutaneous hemangiosarcoma, a less-common form that develops on the skin instead of in organs like the spleen or heart. Bleeding can be a minor inconvenience or a medical emergency. Dr. Nancy Reese recommends methods to stop minor bleeding at home as well as how to bandage a more serious wound to control bleeding on your way to the veterinary hospital. Most bleeding in dogs is due to trauma, from cutting a paw on a rock to being hit by a car. The easiest way to stop bleeding is to prevent it from happening in the first place! Keep your dog on a leash when outside near roads or in the woods, and limit interactions with wildlife and unfamiliar dogs. If hiking with your dog, bring a first aid kit and consider protective booties when traveling over rough terrain. Some types of cancer and other health conditions can cause bleeding as well. Superficial tumors might get damaged when your dog is playing, and nasal tumors often cause nosebleeds. Hemangiosarcoma, cancer of the blood vessels, is famous for causing bleeding. External bleeding can often be controlled with first aid care, while internal bleeding will require veterinary care. For many years, DNA sequencing has been a first line option for diagnosing and treating many human cancers, in a treatment that is often referred to as, targeted therapy. Targeted therapy works by directly inhibiting the growth and replication of the cancer cells in certain types of tumors, and because of its targeted action it has shown high rates of tumor responsiveness in people. Have you ever heard hemangiosarcoma referred to as a death sentence? Well, turns out that might not be entirely true.    Today’s guest, Dr. Erin Dickerson, is here to talk to us about her research into increasing the survival rate for dogs with hemangiosarcoma. And let me tell you, she makes the future look bright!    Hemangiosarcoma is cancer that commonly occurs in the spleen of dogs and unfortunately is usually diagnosed pretty late in the game. Even with treatment, it has a pretty poor prognosis of maybe four to six months with surgery and chemotherapy. In today's VETgirl online veterinary continuing education podcast, we interview Dr. Dorothy Cimino Brown, Professor of Surgery at University of Pennsylvania on the use of the Coriolus versicolor mushroom, known commonly as the Yunzhi mushroom. This mushroom, which has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years, is thought to contain immune-boosting properties from polysaccharopeptide (PSP). The specific product being used is I'm-Yunity, made by Chinese Medicine Holdings LTD (NOTE: This product is manufactured in the USA in adherence to USP c-GMP guidelines). A preliminary University of Pennsylvania pilot study that was released in 2012 evaluated 15 dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma that were treated with 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day of I'm-Yunity. In today's VETgirl online veterinary continuing education podcast, we interview Dr. Dorothy Cimino Brown, Professor of Surgery at University of Pennsylvania on the use of the Coriolus versicolor mushroom, known commonly as the Yunzhi mushroom. This mushroom, which has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years, is thought to contain immune-boosting properties from polysaccharopeptide (PSP). The specific product being used is I'm-Yunity, made by Chinese Medicine Holdings LTD (NOTE: This product is manufactured in the USA in adherence to USP c-GMP guidelines). A preliminary University of Pennsylvania pilot study that was released in 2012 evaluated 15 dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma that were treated with 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day of I'm-Yunity.
