Welcome once again everyone, the Riddikulus Crew is here and today we are jumping back into a streaming service series that we touched on for their first season last year and circling back now that their second season is finally out, so get excited for our coverage on The Witcher Season 2! Things will be a bit different this time around as we will be covering each episode, one at a time, as opposed to reviewing multiple episodes at once. The level of detail and significant moments called for an adjustment and we have also added a fun new aspect as well by describing the attributes and traits of the monsters shown each episode to take these reviews to the next level. So follow along with us and our Witcher as we get a resolution to the Battle of Sodden, learn the fate of Yennefer, meet a familiar face in a castle overlooking an unfortunate village, and some intense action! With Geralt now firmly in charge of Cirilla's protection and safety as they have found one another to fulfill their destiny, you don't want to miss out. (As mentioned in the introduction of this episode, we lost an important member of our show, the best dog ever in Nala to Hemangiosarcoma last week and if anyone feels called to help with the medical bills, the GoFundMe link is listed below, God bless you all.) https://gofund.me/47d23f1a
Bleeding can be a minor inconvenience or a medical emergency. Dr. Nancy Reese recommends methods to stop minor bleeding at home as well as how to bandage a more serious wound to control bleeding on your way to the veterinary hospital. Most bleeding in dogs is due to trauma, from cutting a paw on a rock to being hit by a car. The easiest way to stop bleeding is to prevent it from happening in the first place! Keep your dog on a leash when outside near roads or in the woods, and limit interactions with wildlife and unfamiliar dogs. If hiking with your dog, bring a first aid kit and consider protective booties when traveling over rough terrain. Some types of cancer and other health conditions can cause bleeding as well. Superficial tumors might get damaged when your dog is playing, and nasal tumors often cause nosebleeds. Hemangiosarcoma, cancer of the blood vessels, is famous for causing bleeding. External bleeding can often be controlled with first aid care, while internal bleeding will require veterinary care. Sharon calls in to our Listener Line with a question. Her corgi’s getting closer to the prognosis timeframe the surgeon predicted. Now he’s gagging a few times a day. Is this the cancer coming back, or invading his lungs? If he’s not eligible for more surgery, what can she do at home? Dr. Trina Hazzah, integrative oncologist, helps Sharon understand what could be going on with her boy. She makes a couple of very specific recommendations that Sharon can try right away to relieve symptoms. She also makes a referral to a veterinarian in Sharon’s area who might just be able to help. For many years, DNA sequencing has been a first line option for diagnosing and treating many human cancers, in a treatment that is often referred to as, targeted therapy. Targeted therapy works by directly inhibiting the growth and replication of the cancer cells in certain types of tumors, and because of its targeted action it has shown high rates of tumor responsiveness in people. So, what happens when you take this science and apply it to dogs? Well, essentially the same thing, which is exciting and is exactly what we are talking about this week with Ben Lewis, the co-founder of FidoCure. Ben Lewis, the co-founder of FidoCure gives our listeners a deep lesson about genomic sequencing, as it relates to cancer causing DNA mutations. He shares the science behind FidoCure, the types of dog tumors that they’ve had the most success with, as well as how all this biotechnology and science could really help improve the standard of care and the prognosis of many types of cancers in humans and their dogs. Have you ever heard hemangiosarcoma referred to as a death sentence? Well, turns out that might not be entirely true. Today’s guest, Dr. Erin Dickerson, is here to talk to us about her research into increasing the survival rate for dogs with hemangiosarcoma. And let me tell you, she makes the future look bright! Hemangiosarcoma is cancer that commonly occurs in the spleen of dogs and unfortunately is usually diagnosed pretty late in the game. Even with treatment, it has a pretty poor prognosis of maybe four to six months with surgery and chemotherapy. I would love to be able to diagnose this disease earlier and have better treatment options for these patients. Today, Dr. Dickerson is going to talk to us about the latest developments, current trials, what the next few years might look like, and give us some hope for the future. Join us to find out how new research is bringing hope to dogs and owners facing a hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. In today's VETgirl online veterinary continuing education podcast, we interview Dr. Dorothy Cimino Brown, Professor of Surgery at University of Pennsylvania on the use of the Coriolus versicolor mushroom, known commonly as the Yunzhi mushroom. This mushroom, which has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years, is thought to contain immune-boosting properties from polysaccharopeptide (PSP). The specific product being used is I'm-Yunity, made by Chinese Medicine Holdings LTD (NOTE: This product is manufactured in the USA in adherence to USP c-GMP guidelines). A preliminary University of Pennsylvania pilot study that was released in 2012 evaluated 15 dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma that were treated with 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day of I'm-Yunity. While there wasn't a statistically significant difference in survival between the three dosage groups, the median survival time was highest in the 100 mg/kg/day group, at 199 days. As as result, a second clinical trial is currently being conducted to evaluate dogs diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. This will evaluate dogs treated with I'm-Yunity alone, dogs treated with I'm-Yunity + chemotherapy, or dogs treated with I'm-Yunity + a placebo.
