Did you know being “Hispanic” is not a thing in Europe? Just ask Claudia Romo Edelman. While living in many countries -- as a Head of Public Relations for the World Economic Forum, to a Marketing Professor in Geneva -- she was simply Mexican, no different from how her friends from Venezuela or Guatemala were identified by their own nationalities. Then, Edelman moved to the U.S. and got a new label – "Hispanic" or "Latina." She's embraced the description with the same spirit she welcomes any respectful nod to her heritage. For her, it's all about just making sure she and the LatinX community are part of a broader, more inclusive narrative. In fact, all humans should be respected equally – in society and in marketing. So, she founded “We Are All Human” to advocate for diversity and inclusion. In an incredibly insightful conversation Edelman, we discussed her remarkable journey – from growing up with a professional basketball player-turned economist-turned actor mom (talk about a role model!) to her own impressive path from Special Advisor at the UN to “Founder/Factivist”.... An Empowering Hispanic Star Edelman's experience gives her a unique perspective on brand purpose, which she eloquently shared during our discussion. One of many fascinating parts of our conversation was about her involvement insuch influential pro-social campaigns such as Product Red and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She described the significance of these initiatives then what sparked her commitment to elevating the perception of the Hispanic community by founding  "We Are All Human" – and supporting the "Hispanic Star" initiative -- which aims to unify and empower the Hispanic community. Edelman addressing the Hispanic Marketing Summit held at the UN 12/23 "Purpose-led branding is not just a trend; it's a necessity for survival in today's market." "Understanding the Hispanic community goes beyond language; it's about respecting and investing in their culture and values." You'll learn about the importance of addressing systemic barriers such as education, health, and job opportunities. Her insights into the challenges and opportunities within the Hispanic community were eye-opening but should be of particular interest for brands. Especially given some of the stats she shared about the power of the Hispanic US population as a “factivist!” (Per her book, "Hispanic Stars Rising", "We are the engine of the U.S. economy. Responsible for 2.6 trillion dollars of GDP, which puts us among the top ten GDPs in the world. Our purchasing power is $1.9 trillion. We are entrepreneurial — 86% of all new businesses launched in the past 10 years were started by Hispanics.") Authentic Engagement with the Hispanic Community: Edelman emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting cultural nuances. A significant part of our dialogue centered around how brands can authentically engage with the Hispanic population. A genuine investment in community initiatives, rather than superficial marketing tactics, is key to connecting with this demographic. Listen for more of these insights along with some of her personal stories that added an intimate touch to our discussion. In episode 164, Kerel talks with Claudia Romo Edelman, Founder at We Are All Human, a non-profit organization that has a single purpose to remind people that we belong to the same human family. Claudia was born in Mexico City to two parents, both basketball players, she was surrounded by strong females, learned discipline and other successful traits, moved to Europe to work with the UN, and then eventually moved to America. For the first time in her life, she learned what Hispanic was, why people called her that and the ramifications of shame, embarrassment and other negative connotations that came from that. Since starting her career, Claudia has had a massive impact, not only on the Hispanic community, but also other minority communities in helping them uncover and use their authentic power. Claudia claims she is not an activist, but a factivist - a person who fights for societal change based on facts and data. She has discovered that groups historically known as the minority in the United States are transforming into the majority, why companies should pay attention to them and how much buying power they have, and how those in the Hispanic community can be a voice for their community as they move into senior positions at top corporations. Claudia has so many resources to help those in minority groups find their power and make a difference including her foundation, her A LA LATINA podcast, the Hispanic Leadership Summit, the Hispanic Star and more. If they don't let us sit at the table, then we bring our own chairs, our duffel bags, whatever it is. Just sit there and be part of the conversation and create allyships." Carolina: "To me, education is fundamental for the growth of anyone, of any human being. It's not only what you learn from the books, but the exposure that you get to what other people are thinking, to ideas, to connections. It's another way of networking, right? It's connecting to those future leaders." Carolina: "We still need to show who we are not only to those who don't know much about our culture and who we are, but also to ourselves, to our own Hispanic brothers and sisters. Because there's a lack of ownership of our voices. There's a lack of representation in the sense that we don't believe in ourselves, we don't believe that we're capable of great things, we have been raised to be quiet." You can learn more about Carolina in the links below.Website: https://carolinaveira.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolinaveira/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/caroveira/Facebook: https://web.facebook.com/CarolinaMVeiraTwitter: https://twitter.com/CaroVeiraPodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/ru/podcast/hablemos-inclusion-leadership-purpose/id1583668397?l=ukIf you're listening to the Dr. B Show Podcast, please subscribe, share, and we're listening for your feedback. Due to the persistence of Covid-19, Negocios Now announced a virtual celebration of Latinos 40 under 40. Last year's class will now be recognized on July 17, 2020, with Rémy Martin, as the main sponsor.   “We can't predicate to know when we will meet again to celebrate our Latinos 40 under 40 the way we have for the past four years, but we do know that the pandemic will not stop us on our mission to recognize the most valuable of our young Latinos”, said Clemente Nicado, Publisher of Negocios Now.   As part of the celebration, Rémy Martin will be hosting a short demonstration so that everyone can make the perfect cocktail.   The Latinos 40 Under 40 event was originally scheduled for March 26th, 2020, but was postponed by Nicado Publishing earlier that month due to the safety of all participants.  “We hope that all 40 awardees can join our virtual celebration on July 17th and allow us to express how proud we are of their leadership and of being part of our fifth edition of Latinos 40 under 40 in Chicago”, said Nicado.  The hour-long event will begin at 5:30 pm CST. It will be hosted by Ana Belaval, a reporter for the WGN Morning News and three-time Emmy Award winner.  Since the beginning of the 40 Under 40 event, Rémy Martin has been a dedicated sponsor for the special edition in digital format and the in-person celebration. This year it also has the support of Wintrust, ComEd, BMO, Monterrey Security, Hispanic Star, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Accenture, a Fortune Global 500 company, has also recently joined as a sponsor of the virtual celebration.  All 40 young people will be receiving an award from Negocios Now during the live event. The ceremony will also feature the awarding of three special prizes to the Rising Star, Youngest Latino, and the Leader of the Pack. Also, Rémy Martin will be awarding a special award to one female and one male candidate. These candidates display exemplary roles in their commitments to the community. A toast to all 40 under 40!
