In 1911, as China was beset with challenges, a new generation of scholars considered a new problem: what to do with former imperial borders? How could China's frontiers be considered part of the new nation? In Frontier Fieldwork: Building a Nation in China's Borderlands 1919–45 (UBC Press, 2022), Andres Rodriguez looks at how students, travellers, social scientists, anthropologists, and missionaries contemplated these problems as they took to the Sino-Tibetan frontier to do fieldwork. Focusing on the intimately human stories of these ‘frontier workers,' Rodriguez examines how these scholars approached the frontier, created new knowledge, and redefined what both ‘frontier' and ‘fieldwork' meant. Frontier Fieldwork does a particularly beautiful job of exploring the complex identities of these fascinating fieldworkers, highlighting how some worked with the state, some pushed back, and some were only anthropologists by pure accident. It is sure to be of interest to historians, scholars of borderland studies, anthropologists, and those interested in a model for how you can write a history of empire-shaping events while keeping individuals at the center. Over the course of our conversation, Andres also mentioned: His article in Asian Ethnicity, “A ‘weak and small' race in China's southwest: Yi elites and the struggle for recognition in Republican China” The work of Gray Tuttle, in particular Tibetan Buddhists in the Making of Modern China (Columbia University Press, 2005) Dane Kennedy's book, The Last Blank Spaces: Exploring Africa and Australia (Harvard University Press, 2015) Learn more about your ad choices. Technovation with Peter High (CIO, CTO, CDO, CXO Interviews)
680: In this interview, Intel Fellow Andres Rodriguez discusses the work he and his team are doing to advance artificial intelligence and its applications. Andres speaks to the historical evolution of artificial intelligence, the work being done to democratize access to AI algorithms, and the benefits and risks that AI can pose to society. Andres also provides a unique look at the hardware side of artificial intelligence, the trade-offs in complexity with its software counterpart, and how companies of all sizes can train and distill large AI models into smaller more applicable models. Finally, Andres explains how open-source communities are advancing the progress being made in AI and how citizen developers and people without engineering backgrounds can be easily trained to become familiar with the tools behind AI.
ANDRES RODRIGUEZ visita SIMPATIA POR LA INDUSTRIA MUSICAL. Toda una vida donde la tinta lo ha protagonizado todo. Andres Rodriguez is the founder and CTO of Nasuni, a cloud file storage provider. He is also the former CTO for the New York Times. We last spoke a few years ago, and I was eager to invite him back onto Tech Talks Daily for a catchup. Andres talks about why ransomware has finally pushed back up to the breaking point. Backup, especially as the last line of defense against disasters like ransomware, is dead and ineffective. If it's taking an enterprise or organization 2 weeks to recover their files (because they are following “best practices”) and suddenly paying the ransom seems like a good idea for business continuity, then the model is broken. Prevention is no longer enough. It's the detection and, most importantly, recovery. Unfortunately, the IT silos and no one wanting to take responsibility for recovery exacerbates the problem, causing it to fall between the cracks. As ransomware attacks continue into the new year, the traditional backup will be more widely exposed as entirely inadequate for business continuity and minimizing disruption to the business. But we discuss how cloud-native, global file systems can make a recovery in minutes possible, not days or weeks.

More community leaders speak up about the tortillas thrown at the Coronado-Orange Glen CIF basketball game. Two school districts met to discuss what should be done. Should the team pay the price? And could Texas Tech have started all of this?
If you are a Venture Capitalist, you are most likely looking for entrepreneurs who can identify problems ahead of the market, but of course not too-too early. And, you're looking for founders who are uniquely qualified to solve those problems, plus build a world class company at scale. It's a tall ask, but entrepreneurs like Andres are made for this. He's a serial entrepreneur who loves hard tech. He likes the technical challenges that most people don't have the expertise or desire to solve. He has built many successful companies and the common thread is his ability to see how the market will evolve and in his case how it will evolve around the world of data storage, especially in the cloud. His latest company, Nasuni, is the world's first cloud-native global file system. As previously noted, being early to market can be a competitive advantage and this is certainly the case for Nasuni, as the company has been growing at a very rapid pace. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * A fun discussion about a failed startup that Andres was building with his brother, Antonio, which was aiming at solving the problem of home media storage for consumers which was a very different landscape back in 2000. * How his graduate work in Physics at Boston University helped shape the foundation of his expertise. * The details on Abuzz, a first generation social media company, that was acquired by The New York Times. * Building Archivas, the first enterprise-class cloud storage system which was acquired by Hitachi. * All the details on Nasuni - from its creation to it's aggressive growth plans ahead. * Advice on hiring and building out a company's initial engineering team. * And so much more. Meet Andres from Flagstaff, Arizona. Andres cofounded an organization called the Green Collective which focuses on sustainability through veganism. In America, 30-40% of food is wasted, something Andres learned first hand while dumpster diving. Due to "ad-gag" laws, factory farming is one of our country's best kept secrets. It is also one of the biggest atrocities. We explore what is currently considered the "humane" way to treat animals and what we think it should be. The early post-war years (1945-1948) in Asia witnessed the dismantling of empire leading to a massive territorial reorganisation of the region under the framework of ‘reconstruction'. Contested borders dating from the age of empire were soon to be settled, as new national borders were drawn along ethnic or religious lines in the region. Yet the settlement of borders posed important challenges for those communities who had long resided in the interstices of state power. In this respect, the borderland areas between Yunnan, Western Sichuan and Burma during this period were a good example of the above. After years of relative autonomy in relation to different centers of power, its communities now became categorised as ‘ethnic minorities' to be incorporated into the emerging independent nation-states of either China or Burma. In this podcast, Dr Andres Rodriguez talks to Dr Natali Pearson about the ways in which both China and Burma sought to ‘decolonise' this ethnically diverse border area, and how its inhabitants presented their own interpretation of emancipation, equality and modernity for the region. About Dr Andres Rodriguez: Dr Andres Rodriguez is a lecturer in modern Chinese history at the University of Sydney. His research has focused on the construction of ethnic identities and state building in China's southwest borderlands through the lens of fieldwork during China's Republican period. He is finishing a manuscript tentatively titled 'Meeting the Nation in the Field: Frontier Work and the Making of Modern China's Southwest'. Andres is currently examining early post-war political movements of ethnic minorities across China, Burma, and India as part of a larger framework of ‘frontier reconstruction' and decolonisation across the region.

When the New York Times launched its first web presence, new CTO Andres Rodriguez faced a major challenge – how to scale web services from 10,000 internal users to millions of subscribers. Andres’ IT team could have purchased racks of web servers and load balancers. But building out The Times’ data center wouldn’t withstand the massive number of hits to its site when a major story broke. Instead, Andres turned to Akamai, whose use of the internet to replicate and cache content globally provided scale a single enterprise couldn’t match. His early use of what is now considered a cloud service was a huge success. As The Times began digitizing more of its content and production workflows, Andres soon encountered his next big challenge – how to store, protect, and manage the files that were doubling in size and number every year. He could have purchased racks of NetApp NAS devices, backup solutions, and disaster recovery infrastructure. But this hardware-based model could no longer support the magnitude of file growth. A new file services approach uniting the performance and access of NetApp with the scalability, stability, and global reach of Akamai was needed. Andres’ idea for “NAS Unified” – Nasuni – was born. Andres Rodriguez, founder, and CTO of Nasuni and former CTO of the New York Times joins me on my daily tech podcast to discuss what enterprises can do to ensure their data and cloud storage is AI-ready Unstructured data is a growing source of value, but traditional ways of storing, sharing and protecting the data--especially across multiple locations--are not keeping up with the demand for lower cost, more efficient and smarter infrastructure. Andres outlines steps organizations can take to harness unstructured data for new capabilities, including how to modernize your applications for high-performance while placing files and metadata correctly, so scaling will still be cost-effective. Andres can also shares a few anecdotes on how global firms in engineering, architecture, construction, and other industries were able to take these steps to accelerate digital transformation.

Dr. Andres Rodriguez, a Senior Principal Engineer in the Data Center Group at Intel, stops by to talk about why it is so critical to optimize framework and software tools artificial intelligence applications. Intel has worked hard over the last two years to optimize popular frameworks like Caffe, TensorFlow, MXNet, and Pytorch for Intel® Xeon® processors. We’ve also developed the Intel® Math Kernel Library for Deep Neural Networks (Intel® MKL-DNN) to accelerate deep learning workloads on Intel® architecture. Customers are now seeing the benefits of using their existing Intel Xeon processors for artificial intelligence workloads with increasingly optimized performance. This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
This week on the podcast we’re featuring a series of conversations from the NIPs conference in Long Beach, California. I attended a bunch of talks and learned a ton, organized an impromptu roundtable on Building AI Products, and met a bunch of great people, including some former TWiML Talk guests. In this episode i'm joined by Sara Jennings, Timothy Seabrook and Andres Rodriguez to discuss NASA’s Frontier Development Lab or FDL. The FDL is an intense 8-week applied AI research accelerator, focused on tackling knowledge gaps useful to the space program. In our discussion, Sara, producer at the FDL, provides some insight into its goals and structure. Timothy, a researcher at FDL, describes his involvement with the program, including some of the projects he worked on while on-site. He also provides a look into some of this year’s FDL projects, including Planetary Defense, Solar Storm Prediction, and Lunar Water Location. Last but not least, Andres, Sr. Principal Engineer at Intel's AIPG, joins us to detail Intel’s support of the FDL, and how the various elements of the Intel AI stack supported the FDL research. This is a jam packed conversation, so be sure to check the show notes page at twimlai.com/talk/89 for all the links and tidbits from this episode.
