Religious nationalism is on the rise, both in the United States and globally. While this poses multiple challenges to justice work, it also raises theoretical questions for Christians, including the question of how Catholics should understand the relationship between church and political powers. For centuries, when monarchy was the default, Catholics argued about this. Should the pope control the king, or vice versa? Can kings appoint religious institutional leaders? What if a pope excommunicates a monarch? Somewhere along the line, a political idea called integralism developed. Integralism proposes a much closer relationship between political and religious authorities than most Americans are comfortable with. But despite our longstanding embrace of the separation of church and state, this seemingly obscure idea has entered our public discourse, associated with some right-wing influencers and political figures—including Vice President-Elect JD Vance.  So what is integralism? Is it the same as nationalism, and does it threaten our constitutional ideas about religious liberty? On this episode of the podcast, scholar Nicholas Hayes-Mota talks to the hosts about what integralism is and how it relates to the current political climate.  Hayes-Mota is a social ethicist and public theologian whose research interests include the theology of community organizing, Catholic social thought, contemporary virtue ethics, democratic theory, and AI ethics. He is a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University's College of Arts and Sciences. Does liberalism's attempt to let us all pursue different visions of the good life ironically make the good life even harder to achieve? Should there be an established church? Are the people who hold these ideas politically ascendent, or likely to remain part of a small counter-revolutionary fringe? In this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Nori Cofounder Ross Kenyon invites Dr. Kevin Vallier, Associate Professor and Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics program at Bowling Green State University, on to discuss the rise(?) of Catholic integralist thought, with which he engages in his latest book, All the Kingdoms of the World: On Radical Religious Alternatives to Liberalism. Vallier provides a comprehensive overview of integralism, a formerly default ideological perspective derived from various religious traditions (but especially Catholicism), which advocates for religious governance and the intertwining of church and state. He lays out its history, core ideas, and some speculation on its sociology. Critics of modernity argue that free choice has led to a libertinism that has lowered standards and made us less happy and that we should return to an explicitly religiously ordered society with established churches and codes of behavior. Liberalism, in trying to be all things to all people, has made it adaptive but offering very little public meaning. That, it turns out, is the responsibility of the private person. Vallier steelmans these ideas to the best of his ability in an attempt to reckon with them as a a devout member of the Orthodox Church, while also defending the importance of the liberal tradition. Of course, were liberalism to be replaced by such a tradition, there are huge open questions of how that might impact world politics and climate action. Vallier predicts (and maybe even hopes) it remains a small intellectual insurgency rather than becoming what its advocates desire. This episode is our second installment in a two-part series looking at “integralism”, which holds that the State should recognize Catholicism as true and ought to unite with the Church as body to her soul. In Part 1 of our attempt to give integralism a fair hearing, we were treated to a critique of the theory.  In this second half, we give the floor to one of the leading intellectual voices and proponents in the integralist movement, Dr. Thomas Pink. Dr. Pink argues that integralism is first and foremost what the Catholic Church has taught for centuries about the proper ordering of Church and State.  In addition, our guest makes the case that integralism delivers a more realistic view of how states actually function and the true nature of legal authority. Regardless of whether this two-part series leaves you feeling more or less inclined to accept integralism, we hope that you'll find this exploration to be a rich and meaningful examination of this critically important tradition within Church teaching. Dr. Thomas Pink is Professor of Philosophy at King's College in London, England. You might imagine that a political project to place modern nation states under the supreme authority of the Catholic Church would stand zero chance of success anywhere in the world, including in traditionally Catholic countries. And you'd be right. Even so, a movement known as Integralism – whose 20th-century incarnations were closely related to fascism – has gripped the imaginations of ultra-conservative Catholics in America, and especially on campuses. The Eastern Orthodox political philosopher Kevin Vallier has written a book, All the Kingdoms of the World, about this bizarre development. It's thoughtful and fair-minded – but Integralists have not taken kindly to his analysis and Vallier has found himself drawn into some unnerving exchanges on social media. I'm all the more grateful to him, therefore, for agreeing to be my guest on this episode of Holy Smoke.

If you're a regular consumer of Catholic and Christian media, there's a good chance that you've come across the term “integralism."“Integralism” refers to the school of thought which says that the Church can direct the State to adopt policies which advance the ends of the Church and help enforce Church law.Sounds wild, doesn't it?And yet, if you look more closely, there's actually a lengthy record of Church teaching tilting in the direction of what integralists assert.Integralism engages fundamental questions about what it means to be subject to Christ's kingship and to the legitimate authority of the State.  So it's little wonder that the topic is capable of igniting spirited views on either side. This episode is the first installment in a two-part series planned by Crown and Crozier, in which our objective is to give integralism a fair hearing. Our guest is Dr. Kevin Vallier, who recently authored a detailed critique of integralism entitled All the Kingdoms of the World: On Radical Religious Alternatives to Liberalism.Dr. Vallier has written several books on political philosophy and currently serves as Associate Professor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he also directs the university's program in Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Law.ResourcesKevin Vallier (official website)Kevin Vallier, All the Kingdoms of the World: On Radical Religious Alternatives to LiberalismThomas Pink, In Defence of Catholic Integralism, Public Discourse (August 12, 2018)Kevin Vallier, What is integralism? With Liberty & Justice For All, Session 8 Numerous attempts have been made to decipher the political framework embodied by the World Economic Forum and the United Nations, yet a crucial element in comprehending the underlying motives of these roundtable groups has often been overlooked: faith. Faith stands as the pivotal ingredient in the forthcoming system the World Economic Forum and the United Nations propose. The collaboration between the public and private sectors within the World Economic Forum and the United Nations bears resemblance to a fascist model. Similarly, one could also identify certain communist or neo-communist traits in their policies and strategies for global influence. However, the introduction of faith as a fundamental element in the governance model introduces a crucial moral dimension, akin to a "third leg of the stool." This incorporation of religion transforms the model from a mere manifestation of national socialism or unadulterated fascism into a form of integralism, specifically a progressive, leftist neo-integralism with enviro-communist qualities. https://sovereignnations.com Support Sovereign Nations: https://paypal.me/sovnations https://patreon.com/sovnations Follow Sovereign Nations: https://sovereignnations.com/subscribe/ © 2023 Sovereign Nations. Interview with Fr. Thomas Crean OP on what a Catholic Government looks like. Fr Thomas Crean OP was born in 1973, in Harpenden, England.  He studied at St. John's College, Oxford.  He entered the Dominican Order in 1995, and was ordained priest in 2001.  He received the licence in theology from the Institut Thomas d'Aquin in Toulouse and the doctorate in theology from the International Theological Institute in Trumau, Austria. He has worked in parochial and hospital ministry and as a university chaplain.  He has taught at various institutions of higher education in the United Kingdom and abroad.  His books include A Catholic Replies to Professor Dawkins; The Mass and the Saints; Integralism: a Manual of Political Philosophy (co-written with Alan Fimister); and St Luke's Gospel: a commentary for believers.  His book Florence became a New Sion: a defence of the 'Filioque' and the Council of Florence is due to be published in Autumn 2022 by Emmaus Academic. He is currently resident at Holy Cross Priory, Leicester.  He is a Fellow of the Dialogos Institute.http://www.christendom-awake.org/pages/thomas-crean/thomas-crean.htm What legitimate governments exist? What is integralism? Does it mean monarchy? What is distributism and how does it relate? How do you create an integralist government? People are fed up with "democracy" so among faithful Catholics there is more and more talk about other forms of government like Fascism, Monarchy, Distributism, Catholic Anarchy, Theocracy, Solidarity Party, and Feudalism. Can we fix our current forms of government or do they need to fundamentally change? How would a Catholic country look like? Do we tolerate other religions? Does the Church run the country? Can non-Catholic's hold office? What level of obedience do these Catholic rulers owe to their bishops and the pope? Two swords doctrine? What is it? I have been told that the Church no longer believes this, is that true? Where does the supernatural element play in here? I am personally thinking of the coming of the reign of Mary and the prophecy of the Great French Monarch. The purpose of language is to communicate truth. Integralism - goes back to the 19th century To maintain perfect order, minimize murder and mayhem as much as possible. They said purpose of man to come together into a society is to liv in the perfect natural order. It went beyond just community it became something transcendent because they grew in virtue. This is the reasoning behind why MEN always only voted. The family is the fundamental unit of society, and the father is the head of the family. There is a specter haunting the Catholic world, whose name is "integralism." The term "integralism" has been used in recent years by Catholic thinkers who want to reassert the Church's teaching on the superiority of the spiritual power to that of the temporal power, and the rights of the Church over society. Some Catholic thinkers have even brought this term into American political debate on the Right. Some have decried this trend as a resurgence of theocracy or even of fascism. In this episode, I will discuss the historical origins of "integralism" in 19th century Spain and early 20th century France, before discussing its relevance for the Church today. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/churchcontroversies/message

D. C. Schindler's book The Politics of the Real: The Church between Liberalism and Integralism is one of the richest entries in the ongoing Catholic debate over liberalism, political authority, the common good, and the relation between Church and State. Schindler offers subtle, convincing arguments as to why liberalism is "the political form of evil", specifically consisting of a rejection of the Christian form - specifically, the Jewish-Greek-Roman synthesis embodied in the Catholic Church. Liberalism creates a situation like that described by comedian Stephen Wright: "Last night somebody broke into my apartment and replaced everything with exact duplicates." It adopts aspects of the Western tradition but only on radically different grounds, with a fragmented vision of reality. Even when liberalism claims to make room for religious tradition, it does so only by reconceiving religion as a mere object of individual choice - that is, precisely as non-traditional.  But Schindler goes beyond criticizing liberalism, offering a profound and beautiful ontology of the social order and a somewhat different model of the relation between Church and State from the one proposed by Catholic integralists. Schindler joins the podcast to discuss the book, including topics such as: Why objecting to non-liberal philosophy as "impractical" is a rejection of man as a rational creature Liberalism's false claim of neutrality (or non-confessionalism) The "Christian form" and its fragmentation Why liberalism is “the political form of evil” The roots of liberalism in medieval nominalism The anti-Catholic meaning of the Declaration of Independence's “laws of nature and of nature's God” How the "neutral public square" subverts every tradition it "makes room for" The problem with distinguishing "civil society" from the state Why property is central to understanding the relation between individuals and society Links The Politics of the Real https://newpolity.com/new-polity-press-titles/the-politics-of-the-real This podcast is a production of CatholicCulture.org. Zapraszamy do wysłuchania wykładu z cyklu "JP2 Lectures" 2021-22, organizowanego przez Instytut Kultury im. św. Jana Pawła II na Angelicum, który wygłosił prof. John Milbank (University of Nottingham). Wykład zatytułowany "Virtue, Integralism and the Priority of the Social in Catholic Political Thought". Wokół słów "integryzm" i "integralny" panuje ogromne zamieszanie. Neoscholastycy, którzy dziś powracają do integryzmu, to ci sami ludzie, którzy przeciwstawiają się integralnej jedności natury i łaski! W konsekwencji mylą oni integralny porządek polityczny z teokracją, a władzę kościelną z władzą kościelną.

Sean interviews Fr. Thomas and Dr. Fimister, the authors of "Integralism", which attempts to offer a thoroughly scholastic/Thomistic perspective on political philosophy, especially inspired by the social encyclicals of Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI. They discuss the kingship, priesthood, and patriarchy of our first father Adam and how this changed after the Fall; the religious orientation of the natural law; taxation; the social contract and the State; distinctions on employment, servitude, and slavery; usury; centralization, scale, and distributism; and unjust governments. In this episode, broadcast live on January 25th, 2022 on YouTube, I host a friendly debate on how the Christian interacts with the state. Timon Cline will be representing the idea of "Integralism", which would imply that the government should reflect explicitly Christian values and legislation, and Christians should seek to create that environment. Tom Hicks will be representing a flavor of Two Kingdoms Theology, which implies that God has created a common kingdom and a redemptive kingdom, and though Jesus is king over both, the Christian will interact with each sphere differently. Debate format: Opening Position statements - 15 minutes each Rebuttals - 10 minutes each Dialogue - 30-45 minutes Audience questions until 2 hour mark. Hope you enjoy. Catholic integralism is a political philosophy that advocates for America to become a Catholic state, with no separation of church and state, and policy and law informed by Catholic teaching.Despite having a minuscule number of supporters, Catholic integralism has received a lot of press, and gets prime booking as part of the post-liberal movement. Also, despite being an extremist ideology, Catholic integralism and its advocates are treated as totally legitimate in a way that even much more moderate advocates of political change in the US. The best way to view Catholic integralism is as a movement that's useful to established power and sucking the oxygen out of the room for dissident. Its functional purpose is to collect and harmlessly discharge dissatisfaction with the political status quo.  It is very useful to established power in the way it functions to limit the reach of other approaches that are more practical in America and more realistic to bring into being.Become a Subscriber or Member on:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/masculinistGumroad: https://gumroad.com/masculinist/membership

Rod and Kale talk about Elizabeth Zerofsky's piece in the New York Times about the postliberal American Right. In the conversation, they wonder out loud if the "normie" reaction from center-right and center-left stems from a disgust-reaction to the Heretic. Rod and other writers like TAC's Sohrab Ahmari dare to critique the capital "L" Liberalism of American Conservatism, and look to someone like Viktor Orban who is not squeamish about the business of Statecraft.   Despite Rod being called "An Aging Hipster," the piece is quite fair. And though Rod considers himself largely "un-cancelable" due to The American Conservative, he was initially nervous. Fortunately, she accurately portrayed what these figures on the postliberal Right think. Wokeness has become the default operating system of the Cathedral, and having a fair hearing in the most significant platform is a big deal. What leaves classical liberalism so vulnerable to the illiberal left? State power is a fact and conservatives need to take it seriously as Statecraft.   The left has moved into "Error Has No Rights" territory, so that anyone in opposition to their desires is a Heretic, a kind of left-wing Integralism.   Rod will be speaking about these topics at the upcoming National Conservatism Conference.   Links: Zarofsky piece:The Viktor Orban Effect: Why U.S. Conservatives Love Hungary - The New York Times (nytimes.com)  Christoper Caldwell: https://www.amazon.com/Age-Entitlement-America-Since-Sixties/dp/1501106899 George Nash: https://www.amazon.com/Conservative-Intellectual-Movement-America-Since/dp/1933859121   JD Vance piece: Stop Treating Left-Wing Advocacy Groups Like Charities | Opinion (newsweek.com) Shrier: When the State Comes for Your Kids | City Journal (city-journal.org) National Conservatism Conference: National Conservatism Conference Bari Weiss: Opinion | Meet the Renegades of the Intellectual Dark Web - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

"Catholic Integralism is a tradition of thought that, rejecting the liberal separation of politics from concern with the end of human life, holds that political rule must order man to his final goal. Since, however, man has both a temporal and an eternal end, integralism holds that there are two powers that rule him: a temporal power and a spiritual power. And since man's temporal end is subordinated to his eternal end, the temporal power must be subordinated to the spiritual power."
