Kellie Harrington has done it: she has become the first Irish Olympian to successfully defend their title since, well, Friday. Let's say she's only the second to do it since 1932. Gav and Sinead were both in Roland-Garros to see the crowning moment of her farewell, and report on what it felt like in the moment and what it means to Kellie, who said that, “this one's for me.”That was a happy sequel to a disappointing morning for Team Ireland: Sinead was out at a showjumping final that didn't yield medals, while Gavin rolled back the years to an unhappy morning on the track for a host of Irish athletes. We also discuss the stunning men's 1500m final, and the alleged lights show before the women's 200m decider. Phil is a doctor and an Irish Olympian rower. In this episode, we discuss how his understanding of elite sport performance can help doctors at work. He describes a great analogy of his whole life / career being a four legged stool, and that whilst you might only be able to function on three, you cannot do so on two legs. I love the idea of always making choices about what is prioritised today, and always understanding that there are long term as well as short term goals. He tells me that pressure is important for learning, and that the key is to understand what the pressure is and how it helps you progress. And I love how he talks about the importance of having mental clarity instead of jumping into situations in the middle of an adrenaline rush.If you enjoyed this episode, you might also like Episode 56 how to perform under pressure, 82 what doctors can learn from elite athletes, and 80 optimising mental performance. You can also watch at www.youtube.com/@dr-coach/videos.Production: Shot by Polachek
Join us on a compelling journey in our latest episode of "When Nicole Met" featuring the remarkable story of Joseph Murphy, an Irish Olympian whose life took an extraordinary turn from football fields to the pinnacle of equestrian sport. Discover how Joseph and his brother, fueled by sheer determination and a passion for horses, embarked on a late but meteoric rise in eventing, challenging norms, and redefining their destinies. From humble beginnings to chasing Olympic dreams, Joseph's story is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and the unbreakable bond with his equine partners. Guests: Joseph Murphy, celebrated as one of Ireland's premier event riders, has a career rich with accomplishments and a reputation for his effortless cross-country style. Hailing from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, Murphy's initial foray into sports leaned towards Gaelic football, reflecting his family's strong sporting lineage. However, his equestrian journey began in earnest with his brother Ciaran, transitioning from local hunts to the broader eventing scene under the guidance of Danish event rider Dot Love. This early exposure laid the foundation for a career that saw Murphy ascend to the pinnacle of eventing, representing Ireland at the highest levels, including the Olympics, World, and European Championships, and consistently being named Eventing Ireland's leading rider from 2012 to 2017. Now operating from Co Down in Northern Ireland, Murphy oversees a professional event yard, nurturing talent across a spectrum from pre-novice to advanced-level horses. Beyond competing, he extends his expertise as a Horse Sport Ireland Level 2 Coach, educating riders and horses alike across Ireland, the UK, and the USA. His significant achievements, such as his clear rounds at the London 2012 Olympics with Electric Cruise and his shortlist for Rio 2016, underscore his central role in Irish eventing on a global scale. I Wish, the social enterprise inspiring girls globally to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), is welcoming almost 3,000 female students to its 10th annual Showcase today (February 8) in the RDS, Dublin. Over the past decade, I Wish has engaged with over 60,000 students, hosted close to 1,000 speakers, and partnered with over 50 industry leaders. This year's event boasts a line-up of over 50 influential speakers including former President of Ireland and current chair for elders Mary Robinson. Irish science communicator and entrepreneur Ciara Judge; VP of Mid-Market Global Business Group, EMEA Meta and Head of Meta Ireland, Anne O'Leary; global diversity and inclusion leader Furkan Karayel; aeronautical engineer Dr Norah Patten, and Irish Olympian hockey player and biomedical engineer Katie Mullan will also share their insights and experiences, igniting inspiration among the young attendees. Mrs Robinson, who will speak at a session today on climate justice and the challenges in achieving gender equality globally, outlined the importance of "seeing is believing", with female role models inspiring girls to think bigger. In the recent I Wish Survey of Female Students' Attitudes to STEM, 51% said a barrier to STEM was a lack of female role models while 66% cited poor gender equality in STEM careers. Mrs Robinson said: "I am delighted to join I Wish again this year,?marking?their 10th?anniversary. It's an honour to be part of an event that ignites the spark of possibility in the hearts of young women. As a staunch supporter of 'girl power', I witness its transformative impact every day through my work. "I recognise and applaud the profound influence that organisations like I Wish have on teenage girls, assisting them to embrace their power, and enabling them to forge paths in careers they are passionate about. Seeing is believing for young minds. Together, let us inspire and pave the way for a generation of fearless trailblazers, breaking barriers and shaping a world where every dream is within reach."?] Echoing Ms Robinson's sentiments, I Wish co-founder Caroline O'Driscoll highlighted the significance of providing access to inspiring role models, stating: "When we founded I Wish 10 years ago, our guiding ethos was to give 'Choices, Chances, Changes' to girls and ensure that they have every opportunity to take their place in the economies of tomorrow and not be left behind by broken stereotypical biases of the past. "In our annual survey, time and time again girls tell us that they want more information about STEM and report that access to female role models positively influences them. At our Showcase, over 3,000 teenage girls get the opportunity to listen to the lived journeys of some amazing trailblazers. This in turn allows them to see what a career in STEM is truly like, understand the variety of careers and pathways available and the positive impact that STEM has on our world." This year's event sees the introduction of the inaugural Podcast Hub, in association with Amy Jane Keating, founder of the Go Do You podcast, featuring insightful conversations with leading female STEM voices. These recorded podcasts will be rolled out over the coming months, further amplifying the impact of the event. Also, as part of an extended partnership, Iarnród Eireann and Bus Éireann are providing free rail and bus transport to almost 1,500 girls from 15 locations across Ireland to the event. I Wish co-founder, Gillian Keating extended her thanks to the 40 leading companies from pharmaceutical, technology, and engineering sectors taking part in the event, from speakers to interactive exhibitions. "We are fortunate in Ireland to have so many multinational and indigenous companies committed to showcasing STEM pathways to the next generation of female leaders and innovators. They understand that their future and the sustainability of their business are inextricably linked to the career choices young women make ...

Sophie represented Team Ireland at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in the mixed 4x400m relay event, along with Cillín Greene, Phil Healy, and Chris O'Donnell; she helped Team Ireland make history, with a 51.58 second split as Ireland's relay team set a new National Record and a place in an Olympic final for the first time ever, finishing 8th. She has certainly had a glittering start to her running career. Sophie competed in the women's 400m event at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships. She ran a PB in Belfast of 52:32 last year, which is 5th on the Irish all-time list...and was a part of the women's 4x200m team that finished 2nd at the World Relay Championships in Poland in May 2021, in a national record of 1:35.93, finishing just behind the host nation. Sophie, who has a degree in genetics and cell biology from DCU, born in Wexford, has firmly helped place her county on the map, along with their other famous sports star, the Irish rugby player Tadhg Furlong. We speak about what Wexford is also known for, her training schedule, and the intricacies of her routine. We explore the differences between racing indoors and outdoors, and which one she prefers. We unpack breathwork as prep, those final moments before a race starts, preserving the ego and grounding when fame comes, race splits...and feeling fast versus what the stop-watch reveals.
