Feb Energy Forecast Theme 4: The Fire of Awareness: Transforming Anger into Conscious Power + ToolsFire is both destruction and rebirth. It clears away what no longer serves, making space for renewal. And just as fire in nature can be unpredictable, our inner fire—our passion, anger, and personal power—can also feel intense, consuming, and overwhelming. But when understood with awareness, anger doesn't have to burn us or the world around us. Instead, it becomes a catalyst for transformation, a force that illuminates what needs attention and alignment. What You'll Learn in This Theme
Join us on the Jewish Inspiration Podcast as we explore the profound impact of anger through the lens of Jewish teachings, including the "Orchos Tzaddikim" and the wisdom of King Solomon. We discuss how anger can often lead to arrogance and an unwillingness to admit mistakes, a theme that resonates in today's society, especially within politics. Drawing on the example of Moses, we illustrate how even the most righteous individuals can falter when consumed by anger, and how such emotions can lead to destructive behaviors akin to idolatry. This episode emphasizes the importance of avoiding quick tempers and offers a gentle reminder to refrain from judging others too harshly, acknowledging the cunning nature of the evil inclination in provoking anger. In the latter part of the episode, we reflect on the intricate balance of emotions in parenting and education. By examining the complexities of forgiveness and the role of anger, we highlight the challenges of maintaining balance in relationships, whether between siblings or between parents and children. Through biblical narratives, we emphasize the Almighty's capacity for patience and forgiveness, encouraging us to emulate these traits in our own lives. We ponder the potential dangers of being easily appeased by the wicked and the necessity of using anger judiciously to instill reverence or correct behavior. With a focus on divine patience and love, listeners are invited to appreciate and adopt these virtues to foster harmony and responsibility in both personal and communal spheres._____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)Recorded from a live audience presentation in the TORCH Centre - Levin Family Studios (B) in Houston, Texas on January 13, 2025.Released as Podcast on February 25, 2025_____________DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending. This is a quote from C.S. Lewis my guest, Jennifer Sakata, shares that fits her own life story. Having grown up with an alcoholic mother and stepdad she didn't understand that her family life was dysfunctional. Not until she began to notice that her friends' families functioned much differently than her own. But when she became a teen, she and her little sister were removed from that environment. Unfortunately, the sisters were separated, each going to live with their respective grandparents. Only then did Jennifer begin to understand the difference between a house and a home. Because of her upbringing, the habits of her own mother began to manifest in her when Jennifer had her own children, and she made a decision not to raise her boys the same way she'd been brought up. She also shares how she finally met her biological father when she was in her forties and how God brought a wonderful relationship from that. Jennifer has lived through a lot of difficulty in her life but because she intentionally decided to break the cycle from her own childhood, she transformed her anger into love. And she shares some of the practical ways she was able to do that in this episode. Y'all are truly going to enjoy hearing Jennifer's story. Go to carolroper.org/podcast for shownotes

This weekend, Little Kids, Big Hearts recorded a new episode about one feeling that ALL of us have — anger! The guest Qook-a-leekie in our episode was played by a friend, Marjan Neshat, an amazing actress who has recently been channeling her own anger by amplifying the voices of people in her home country of Iran. After recording the episode, Marjan stayed on for a one-on-one conversation about her recent experiences and advocacy related to what's happening in Iran. We wanted to release it today because it's about current events and seemed like a perfect discussion to share on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We believe deeply in having difficult conversations and not shying away from topics that may not be comfortable for everyone to discuss. Parents don't always have a choice about what kinds of conversations they have with their children. Children see, hear, and read everything around them, and they have questions. Parents, you might want to listen alone first before sharing this with your children. We hope that you have a meaningful Martin Luther King Jr. Day and we are excited to share the full episode with you soon!
There are lots of reasons to be angry right now. It's often said that if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention. But according to scholar Allison Aitken, anger only leads to further harm, no matter how justified it may feel in the moment. As a professor of philosophy, Aitken believes that Buddhist texts offer valuable resources for working with our anger and healing contemporary divisions. Drawing from the work of the eighth-century Indian philosopher Shantideva, she positions compassion as a substitute attitude for anger and lays out methods for moving beyond righteous rage. In this episode of Tricycle Talks, Tricycle's editor-in-chief, James Shaheen, sits down with Aitken to talk about how anger distorts our perceptions, why anger can be so seductive, and how we can transform our rage into compassion.
In the last episode, Robert and Dave focused primarily on containment. This week's episode is focusing on giving some personal examples of containment and penetrating even further into transforming anger and resisting emotions into intimacy and strength. For most of us, feelings are central. Here, we are being guided and given options to how beneficial responses to our feelings can be vital to long-term happiness. It can be a bit like a lobotomy at the beginning to think and question ourselves outside of our conditioning, to stay frozen or fixated in our feelings. Once we can begin to listen we can recognize that these guidelines can be a much better definition of who we are. Containment is that pause between feeling and reaction. This is not something most of us have been taught to do and therefore must be applied again and again until a new habit is formed. Robert and Dave offer up real places in their lives where they struggle with frustrations and impatience. Join them as they reflect on their own conditioning to illustrate how they use containment and other tools, such as the 75 essential needs, to help them navigate through their personal challenges. Getting through feelings does not always mean getting over them. As you are hearing their stories, take this opportunity to look at your difficult feelings and see if you can find a place that still wants to care for yourself, others, and learn how to implement this caring. This is not a standard, but because you realize it makes you feel best when you can allow awareness of challenging emotions and the intent to heal coexists. This opens the door for a direction of healing that otherwise wouldn't occur. Read the transcription and listen to this episode at Awareness That Heals.

As I've talked about so many times, the practice of mindfulness and compassion, as I teach here on the podcast and in my private coaching practice, offer amazing, real world benefits. People use mindfulness to improve everything from their golf game to their sales numbers. From household budgeting, to healthy eating and weight loss. From relationship repair to stress reduction. The list literally goes on forever. But just like the awareness itself, in almost every instance there is much more beneath the surface. Like iceberg proportions!!! In today's episode, I talk about the value of self regulation in anything we do in our lives and how self regulation is made possible by the practice and understanding of impermanence and non-identification: I also share with you one of my favorite practices: the pause. I also mentioned the next two programs I'm launching in the next couple of weeks: Transforming Anger - how to understand your anger and transform it to useful and loving motivation. Head Game - Mindfulness for the golfer who wants to shave strokes off their score. Now that we've talked about anger for a few days, let's talk about something more comfortable and happy. How about compassion? Almost every time anger arises in our bodies, there is another person involved. Maybe it's someone close to us, or it's an anonymous person cutting us off in traffic. Whatever the case may be, the key to transforming the hijack of anger and rage, is in feeling compassion for the people who trigger us. In today's episode, I offer some simple, informal practices that you can use anytime: Also in today's episode, I am very clear that this does not mean that we must let people walk all over us. In fact, it is compassion that allows us to clearly see the solution to the anger that threatens to cause us problems in our life. In this week's podcast, we dive into anger and the different ways it manifests and expresses itself in our lives. We speak to our own personal experiences of healing anger and rage through psychedelics, and we offer some practical things you can do to start getting a handle on anger through awareness, attention, and healthy coping mechanisms. We will also talk about what to do when you need to tell someone you're angry with them, what to express and when, and how to do it with grace and balance.
