Venture capital is the engine behind many of the world's most innovative startups—but only 2% of VC funding goes to women-led businesses. Why does this gap exist, and how do we fix it?This week Matt sits down with Jennifer Abele and Raquel Filmanowicz, Founders and Managing Partners of VC 414, a firm dedicated to funding women, minority, veteran, and LGBTQ entrepreneurs. They break down how venture capital really works, what makes a startup investable, and how educators can help the next generation of founders succeed. If you're teaching entrepreneurship, mentoring young innovators, or just curious about how diverse startups get funded, this is a must-listen.Listen to learn:How venture capital works and why so little funding goes to women and minority entrepreneurs. What makes a startup investable—from founder traits to market potential and exit strategies. The biggest mistakes first-time entrepreneurs make when pitching to investors. How AI, workforce development, and education startups are shaping the future of venture capital. Why technical skills alone aren't enough—the key business skills founders need to secure funding.3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:Diverse founders face barriers—but also bring untapped potential.Only 2% of VC funding goes to women-led businesses, despite data showing they often outperform male-led startups. VC 414 is working to change this by providing early-stage funding and mentorship to underrepresented founders, particularly in workforce, education, government, health, and wealth. The best founders are coachable, resourceful, and relentless.Investors look beyond ideas—they bet on people. VC 414 prioritizes grit, adaptability, and strong communication skills when selecting startups. A great founder can stretch $1, adapt to market changes, and take feedback without ego. Without these traits, even a promising idea can fail.Education plays a critical role in developing future entrepreneurs.Technical education provides a strong foundation, but business acumen, networking, and problem-solving skills are just as crucial. Founders who lack access to networks and mentorship often struggle to raise capital, which is why VC 414 not only invests in startups but connects entrepreneurs to key industry relationships to accelerate their growth.Resources in this Episode:To learn more about VC 414, visit their site: vc414.comStartups mentioned in this episode:Mastertech.aiEvenRex K-12Are you an entrepreneur? Money, money, money… you CAN have money abundance but there IS an equation to it, and there's nobody better to talk about this topic than Chief Legal Officer Andre Pennington! Today's episode is with one of the nation's premier attorneys and financial professionals! Andre Pennington is a business owner, military attorney, and judge who blends his extensive knowledge of financial services with the intricate complexities of the law and on this episode we focus on going BEYOND wealth —> leading money in a different way to create lasting prosperity. One takeaway for me from our interview: the willingness to fail and learn, time after time. Some of the most successful people have failed a lot but they get up, they keep going, and they learn from their results. We discuss generational patterns, abundance, and breakthrough as Andre shares his personal story… “The story that I make up about what I'm seeing is the one that carries the day - I don't look at myself as a victim or powerless,” says Andre. So, how do we move into a space of wealth and abundance? Tune in to this episode as I pick Andre's brain on this and topics such as financial literacy, changing your generational branch, and how to go from those early stages of monetizing our deeper WHYs into the the leadership traits we leaders need to be implementing as we create more wealth. “I don't want to be the top dog… I want to create other leaders who can go out and do their own funnel outwardly.” -Andre Pennington

About Jennifer Standish: Jennifer Standish is the author of Permission Granted: Live Your Life Full of Joy and Peace, a book in which she shares 91 self-limiting beliefs that, as a result of being raised by a narcissistic mother and an enabling father, she learned growing up and realized as an adult that she needed to change to be happy. She is also the Founder and President of Give Yourself Permission, which helps women create new rules for their lives, so they can overcome limiting attitudes that prevent them from achieving career success and finding happiness. Before becoming a transformational coach, she founded Prospecting Works, a successful business that assists salespeople in overcoming cold-call reluctance. Check out the latest episode of our Conversational Selling podcast to learn more about Jennifer. In this episode, Nancy and Jennifer discuss the following:Cold Calling: why people hate making and receiving cold calls.Being a step ahead in the conversation weaponed with a script. Jennifer's authentic warm and fuzzy approach to cold calling. How mental discipline helps overcome NO and move forward to Yes.Why people drift from the best practices to where they are most comfortable? How you say is sometimes more important than What you say. Start your conversation with honesty and it'll reward you with an appointment. Tips on contacting C-suite executives and remaining confident. Key Takeaways: If you're calling the right people and have a great delivery and a reasonable script they're going to take your call and you're going to get an appointment. You must believe in what you're calling about to your core, and you must believe that you're helping people.NO is not a forever NO. Moreover, it is never personal.Cold calling can actually be fun, and you can enjoy it!"Let's look at it like it's a Hollywood script. Actors are memorizing scripts and they memorize them to the degree that when they speak to them, it sounds authentic. That's what you need to do. You maintain control of the conversation because over time it becomes very predictable what people are going to say. Stick to the same script. Don't reinvent it every single call. Say the same thing over and over again. And you'll be able to predict what people say in response, and then you'll be able to then craft your responses accordingly. So, it really makes your life so much easier if you know what you're going to say ahead of time." – JENNIFER "Your delivery I think is 80% of it. If you're confident and you believe in what you're saying, even with a mediocre script, you're still going to schedule appointments. You have somebody with a very weak delivery and an amazing script, that person's not going to have any success because, in cold calling, our voice communicates so much more than the words that we're saying. And so, when you don't have a face and you don't have facial inspections and body language, all those little nuances in somebody's voice become incredibly important. And so, people follow confidence." – JENNIFER “So be confident in what you're communicating and realize that you're really only selling the meeting. You're not selling a $3 million insurance policy, right? You're just selling the meeting. You're just asking for an introduction. And if you approach this with confidence, I mean, young, eager people, whether you're a financial advisor or you're a commercial insurance or whatever, where age might be seen as an advantage. You know, people still follow confidence and people will work with a young producer who's eager in building a book because they know they're going to get outstanding client service. So, I say, call, ask for the appointment. It's an introductory call. You're not asking them to like hand you a ton of money. You're just asking for time.” – JENNIFER Connect with Jennifer Standish:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenniferstandish/Give Yourself Permission: https://www.jenniferstandish.com/Try Our Proven, 3-Step System, Guaranteeing Accountability and Transparency that Drives RESULTS by clicking on this link: https://oneofakindsales.com/call-center-in-a-box/ Connect with Nancy Calabrese: Twitter: https://twitter.com/oneofakindsalesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/One-Of-A-Kind-Sales-304978633264832/Website: https://oneofakindsales.comPhone: 908-879-2911 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ncalabrese/Email: leads@oneofakindsales.com
How do you build your dream practice? That's the question we're exploring in the latest episode of Getting To YES – examining the key ingredients needed to create a practice that you feel passionate about, that lights you up, and that supports how you want to live your life. As you will discover in my conversation with Jennifer Wheeler, there's a smarter approach to either launch your first practice or reinvent your existing practice... without years of trial-and-error. For those that don't know Jennifer Wheeler, she's the founder and CEO of MNDSHFT Health - a practice aligned around high-level functional medicine programs. A family nurse practitioner and clinical physiologist by training, Jennifer completed advanced studies with the Institute for Functional Medicine and the School of Applied Functional Medicine – and she's also mentoring countless practitioners on how to create a dream practice that's aligned with the practitioner's values. Listen in to learn: Her advice to her younger self... on how to build with intention, creating a practice that integrates & supports how you want to live How to decide between a lower-volume boutique-style practice vs. a higher-volume conventional practice The importance of setting up the practice for "flow"... with streamlined systems, processes and programs How to pick your strategy to attract your ideal dream clients The mindset shift needed to evolve from "selling" to "serving" – and the critical importance to define your vision, values and beliefs. The importance of mentorship – and how to decide whether a more intimate 1:1 mentorship or group coaching is what you need Quotes We have to create a practice that's built upon what we value, what we're good at, what we're passionate about teaching. (09:17 | 09:27 Jennifer) As a practitioner, you can start a practice that's higher, or somewhere in the middle, or that's smaller volume. And whether which road you choose to go down is going to be based upon what your vision is, what you wanna bring to life. (10:54 | 11:08 Jennifer) The important thing to the success of creating the practice is honing in on the vision. And the vision is always gonna be grounded in who you are, what you value, & what you're good at. (11:32 | 11:47 Jennifer) Decide what you value, what you wanna create, and then move forward with the choice to honor that. EPISODE NOTES Jennifer Spivak is the CEO & Founder of The Ad Girls, an all-female Facebook & Instagram Advertising agency. Named a Top Facebook Ads Manager to Watch and called the ”Conversion Queen” by Forbes, Jennifer is on a mission to help amplify women's voices in the world through the powerful medium of Facebook Ads. She and her team have generated over $40,000,000 for their hundreds of notable clients worldwide, such as Danielle LaPorte who called Jennifer “The CIA Of Facebook Ads”. MEMORABLE MOMENTS “The most important thing that you want to have in place before you even think about any sort of paid advertising, is a validated offer, validated messaging, and a validated funnel.”“We work primarily with female clients, and we also donate a percentage of our revenue to an amazing organization that helps survivors of domestic violence achieve financial autonomy and independence after they leave a terrible situation.”“You could have the greatest advertisement strategy, and campaign, and ad creatives, and copy in the world. If you don't have the right messaging, the right offer, the right funnel, the right understanding of the customer journey that you're going to take people through after they see the ad, you are actually giving way too much power away to the ad platform. You're expecting it to do some that it's not designed to do.”“Messaging is the new targeting. That is so incredibly important. And that change has occurred over the last 12 to 18 months.”“In losing some of the ability to track and losing data, Facebook's actual targeting parameters are not as effective as they used to be, because they're not getting constantly fed the data that they used to get that would help know exactly who to show your ad to.”“Your messaging has so much more of a significant role than it ever used to. Because your messaging is almost the thing that's doing the targeting, your messaging is the thing that has to appropriately call out the exact right people. Because just using targeting to make sure you get the right people is not as viable of a strategy as it used to be.”“The framework has four different messaging buckets in it. Number one is credibility. Number two is personality. Number three is vulnerability. And number four is feel good. And so when you're able to combine all of those things in your ad messaging, in your landing page, mass messaging, email messaging and your funnels, you are able to not only stand out from your competition in the feed and start actively calling the right people who are truly your people, not just anyone that needs what you offer.”“I'm on a different playing field. I'm having a different conversation. And the people who are really bought into our mission, and who I am, are actually the people that come in through my ads, versus just any and everybody. And that actually makes the sales process more seamless. The process of delivering services to clients is more enjoyable. So it has this reverberating impact throughout the entire business.” Connect with Jennifer:⭐ Connect on Instagram @jennspivak⭐ Website: https://theadgirls.com/ Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here

If you're a parent, then you know that some of the deepest connections you'll ever experience are with your children. But so often, we focus on our role as correctors of behavior, when it's the connection that should be nourished first. When we connect before correcting, whether it's with our children, spouse, friends, or co-workers, we're opening the door to better outcomes and better relationships. Today, Blake welcomes Jennifer Kolari, one of the nation's leading parenting experts, sought-after international speaker, and founder of Connected Parenting. Her mission is to help more parents discover the power of connected parenting so they can raise children who are resilient, protected, & secure in their relationships, lives, & environments. In this episode, Jennifer shares powerful insights and real-life examples of challenges that parents are struggling with. You'll hear effective techniques that you can use to build a stronger connection with your child to help them become healthier, more resilient, and ultimately, more successful in their lives. What You'll Learn: The emotional moment that continues to inspire her work (6:35) Common mistakes parents make when trying to correct behaviors (13:03) How to reframe our fear of negative feelings (18:06) An example of how connection before correction builds resilience (26:04) Why successful people aren't always successful parents (43:42) Favorite Quotes: Behavior is never the problem. It's a symptom of the problem. —Jennifer We need to teach and train our kids to help them be successful adults, but the way you get there is through connection, not control. —Jennifer The most important relationship is the one between you and you. When Linsey watched her daughters fall asleep one night, she was overcome with the same desires all of us moms have for our children: who are their examples of humility and love and faith? What are they learning from the world around them about courage and confidence? What if they could learn these things from a place of TRUTH and VIRTUE? Linsey knew the answer: it lied in her daughters knowing the women of the Bible who loved God and loved others. This is when her prayers turned to a calling and Linsey created Beautiful Hearted Women of the Bible, a 40 week, creative, hands-on, and PRACTICAL devotional for mothers to do with their daughters ages 6-10. My guest this week is Jennifer Dukes Lee. She lives on a 5th generation Lee family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband are raising crops, pigs and two beautiful humans. She writes books, she loves queso and enjoys singing loudly. Once upon a time she didn’t believe in Jesus, and now He is her CEO. She just released her latest book, Growing Slow: Lessons on Un-hurrying Your Heart from an Accidental Farm Girl. 4:14 – Jennifer 101 She lives in northwest Iowa. Her husband’s great, great, great grandparents had the original farm. She is a farm wife, even though she never imagined being in that role. 7:40 – Growing fast and slowing down Jennifer is an over achiever, and her personality makes her want to grow things fast. She left her newspaper job to be on the farm with her family. Even though she was in the more peaceful setting of a farm, she kept working hard and was told by a doctor that she was stressed out and “had a hurried heart.” She has since adopted a new way of living. 14:57 – A growing slow year Jennifer began studying her farmland and how seeds grow to find out why some things grow faster and others slower and how seasons affect the farm. 26:50 – Soil of your heart Jennifer says you should take time every day to examine the soil of your heart. Come to God with your hands open and ask him to take some of your burdens or worries. Go through your seasons of life with open hands. 32:52 – Practices to slow down To slow yourself down, there are little things you can do, like not checking your phone at stoplights. Also, don’t multitask. Uni-tasking is better and you have more focus. 36:50 – Remember, reflect, return Jennifer asks me to remember, reflect and return. I also share my struggle with not being as far ahead as I planned. 4:30 – Get to know you Her hype song? Chumbawumba “I Get Knocked Down” Favorite TV show growing up? Three’s Company FEATURED QUOTES “I’m a farm wife, and I didn’t expect to be in this life.” – Jennifer “You can be busy and still go about it with a peacefulness in your heart.” – Jennifer “Take time every day to examine the soil of your heart.” – Jennifer CONNECT: https://jenniferdukeslee.com/ ABOUT JENNIFER: Jennifer Dukes Lee lives on the fifth-generation Lee family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband are raising crops, pigs, and two beautiful humans. There's a whole lot we CAN'T control out there and a whole lot we CAN control in here. What if there was some virtue we haven't thought about in a while where we'd think, "oh, my goodness! That's so true! I really need to think differently about this. I need to make sure I'm having conversations about this one and make sure we are combatting it." That's what this episode is going to do for you. We're talking about one virtue that if our family was built on it and we trained our kids fiercely in it, our culture would seriously CHANGE. I know you don't need the reminder, but common sense says teaching our children at a young age to be able to handle conflict resolution and conflict avoidance leads to them being ADULTS who can handle conflict when they grow up. What a privilege we have to train our children with such virtue! Today we are talking about the habit of reflection in situations of conflict in our homes and how to avoid a worse situation. It is NOT about walking away from this episode and never having conflict again. Impossible :) But I do hope you are able to use some of these ideas with your own family to grow into more of who God created you all to be. Let's grow! "WOW." That is how you are going to end this episode. Aaaand with a high probability of wiping some tears. Cindy Carris' story to open the Mary Rose Mission soup kitchen in suburban Kentucky is a story of "Yes" after "Yes" to be the hands and feet of Christ even when she had no idea what to do. It is the story of waiting on God's timing, trusting, and surrendering. In a world that doesn't always encourage these virtues, Cindy is here to remind us that these are the gifts God gives us to move His mountains through us. The BRAVE MOMS series to close out 2020 is inspired by YOU. The stories I hear and the battlefields we all walk through on our journeys. God called Joshua to rise up and "be strong and courageous" (Joshua 1:9) and his call to us today is no different. It is my hope that these stories inspire you to be brave, to be strong and courageous, and to fear not as you lead your greatest charge - your family. Sarah Gardner (Episode 10) shares with us her story of living a nightmare watching her dad confined to a nursing home in 2020. One of the biggest aspects of parenting we don't often get encouraged through is how exhausting it is to stick to your values day in and day out, be the rule enforcer through all the push back from the non-adults in our homes, AND maintain consistency. No doubt it'd be easier to just give in and not try as hard. But what if we try to increase our "I-don't-care-if-you-think-I'm-mean" muscle and are a little less nice. Is that what our families need to grow stronger and our kids need to grow into who they're meant to be? I'd argue, YES. And I think you'd agree. Just because one of our mom superpowers includes being able to go all day without eating or sleeping AND it includes getting by on leftover sandwich crust as our meal doesn't mean we SHOULD do it.
