The journey to being an entrepreneur to a multi-million dollar company can be challenging when you don't have an uncle that's a banker. Jennifer Garcia, COO at LBAN,  Latino Business Action Network, a Silicon Valley based non profit, discusses how we can move beyond just the side hustle, to entrepreneur, to multi-million dollar business with conversations when we can build stronger networks. Latinos are the fastest growing entrepreneurial group and yet, we lack the financial backing to scale our business. Why? We discuss some of the financial barriers, that are not associated to the Latino Business but to the institutions that support the business entrepreneurship community. Fast facts: The odds of loan approval from national banks are 60% lower for Latino-owned businesses above $50K and Government Contracts are smaller and take longer for approvals. Latinos are the highest indexed to start a technology business, but receive less than 2% overall in VC funding. Latinos are 20% of the US population.  LBAN is partnered with the Stanford Graduate School of Business in this 8th annual report State of Latino Entrepreneurship for 2022 and was released earlier this year, from a  national survey of 10,000 business owners across the country. The survey respondent pool consisted of 5,011 Latino-owned employer businesses and 5,017 nonHispanic White-owned employer businesses, which served as a benchmark comparison group. All the companies sampled generated at least $10,000 in annual revenue and had one employee beyond the owner. You can find the report here. What did the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus actually do? Many Christians today genuinely believe the answer is simple: Jesus died for our sins. But sincere followers of Jesus have wrestled with this question for nearly 2,000 years and arrived at very different conclusions along the way. In this episode, we dive down the rabbit hole into the world of Christian atonement theory, asking questions that lead us to more questions. Have we missed major components of The Gospel? Do we really understand Jesus? And why does it feel like some people who are so certain of The Gospel fail to live as Jesus did? Dr. Jennifer Garcia Bashaw is Assistant Professor of New Testament and Christian Ministry at Campbell University. She is also an ordained pastor. In her book Scapegoats: The Gospel through the Eyes of Victims, she shows how many Christians today read the New Testament as victors, not as victims. The teachings and actions of Jesus thus lose much of their subversive significance. The Gospels become one harmonized story about individual salvation rather than distinct representations of Jesus's radical work on behalf of victims. In the first half of this conversation, Jennifer teaches us what atonement theory is and walks us through a few of the more significant theories found across Church history. Then, Mark and Jennifer discuss the embodiment of these beliefs in the real world and explore a new theory — Scapegoat Theory— which illuminates an essential truth of the Gospels: that Jesus modeled a reality in which victims become survivors, and the marginalized become central to the Kingdom of God. Our guest today is Jennifer Garcia Bashaw, Professor of New Testament at Campbell University. Her new book is Scapegoats: The Gospel through the Eyes of Victims. About the book:Scapegoats are innocent victims who have experienced blame and violence at the hands of society. René Girard proposes that the Gospels present Jesus as a scapegoat whose innocent death exposes how humans have always created scapegoats. This revelation should have cured societal scapegoating, yet those who claim to live by the Gospels have missed that message. They continue to scapegoat and remain blind to the suffering of scapegoats in modern life.Christians today tend to read the New Testament as victors, not as victims. The teachings and actions of Jesus thus lose much of their subversive significance. The Gospels become one harmonized story about individual salvation rather than distinct representations of Jesus's revolutionary work on behalf of victims. Scapegoats revisits the Gospel narratives with the understanding that they tell scapegoats' stories, and that through those stories the kingdom of God is revealed. Bashaw goes beyond Girard's arguments to show that Jesus's whole public ministry (not only his death) combats the marginalization of victims. These scapegoat stories work together to illuminate an essential truth of the Gospels--that Jesus modeled a reality in which victims become survivors and the marginalized become central to the kingdom.

In this episode, we are joined by Jennifer Garcia to talk about her early introduction to being a "mom" to her 4 siblings that were in foster care. She talks about her family history, emotional abuse of being raised by a narcissistic mother and a father who couldn't help much because he was in an inebriated state due to alcoholism. Jennifer felt the family home at age 17, shortly after that, her family was homeless and 5 of her siblings were in foster care. She knew she wanted to take custody, and at only 20 years old, she took the responsibility of raising 4 of her siblings. The road was not easy, she had a lot to prove to them, others and most importantly, herself. **warning; there is talk about emotional, physical and sexual abuse, and domestic violence.** To reach out or to follow Jennifer, you can connect with her on Instagram www.instagram.com/jen__fer Please rate and review on Apple Podcast, Podbean or Castbox or wherever you Podcast and be sure to share it with a mom-friend! Today I will be speaking to Jennifer Garcia of JGracia Publishing, which is comprised of the following imprints: Shades of You books, Kingdom Books, True Life Books and For Your Health Books. The goal of JGracia Publishing and its authors is to transport the reader and make them feel as if they are a part of the book they are reading. They believe children are the most valuable resource and needed to be treated as such. They want to entertain as well as educate young readers with their books.   Upon seeing that many concerns facing children like bullying, autism, adoption and others were not being addressed JGracia Publishing  decided to give them a voice.  In their Krissy the Littlest Ladybug series the intended audience is 3-7 year olds.
