The Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis, Massachusetts, focuses on Cape Cod's rich maritime history, along with boat building, yachting, and nautical art. The museum strives to enable audiences of all ages to understand and enjoy maritime culture through exhibitions, public events, and educational programs. Exhibits focus on the cod fishing industry and whaling, the history of navigation, the shellfish of Cape Cod, and more. There's also an extensive scrimshaw collection and historic Cape Cod wooden boats. There's a lecture series and other offerings including a Young Mariners summer program for kids and a boatbuilding program. The museum is developing a new exhibit on lighthouses that opens on October 20. Emily Sullivan, the museum's curator, is interviewed in this episode. The lighthouse at Verona Beach in New York was one of three built on Oneida Lake to aid navigation in conjunction with the opening of the Barge Canal as part of the Erie Canal system in 1918. In 1920, New York State created its own department for managing navigational aids, including a program for hiring lighthouse keepers. New York is the only state to ever maintain its own aids to navigation department. Verona Beach Lighthouse, New York. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. The Verona Beach Lighthouse Association was formed in 2002 to save the lighthouse, which had become a popular site for dumping trash. More than 150 truckloads of debris were removed and the windows and entry door were replaced. As part of their “Reimagine the Canal Program,” the New York Power Authority and Canal Corporation had Verona Beach Lighthouse renovated and illuminated with LED lighting in 2021. Terri Knight is a founder and longtime volunteer for the Verona Beach Lighthouse Association, and Bruce Woodward has served as the group's treasurer. The Untouchables is an iconic movie by Brian De Palma that kickstarted careers and told the story of Elliot Ness. Jovial Jay and Shua remember the 1987 film on Enjoy Stuff! Al Capone may have lost his empire and died many years ago, but his legacy lives on in TV and movies. 35 years ago Brian DePalma interpreted his story in the movie The Untouchables. This week we look back and remember the legendary film. News A new LEGO set featuring Bowzer is great for collectors and those with some coin You can bid on George Clooney's Batman nipple suit for just $40,000 Day Shift is a new vampire hunter movie on Netflix, starring Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg “Missing Movies”, a consortium of film artists and professionals is trying to save long forgotten films Star Wars and Marvel are crossing paths again with Alden Ehrenreich What we're Enjoying Jay was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a new Hulu show called Derek DelGaudio's In & Of Itself. A poignant performance of illusion and identity. Shua read Wil Wheaton's annotated autobiography Still Just a Geek, which paints a very true to life portrait of the actor's struggles in life. Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Be sure to check out Jay's articles on Retrozap.com. This week he revisits the 1995 film Strange Days. It tells the story of a not too distant Los Angeles future and a conspiracy. Despite the setting, it is an underrated sci-fi movie that is worth another look. And don't forget his articles on MCULocationScout.com for some great, interactive maps of filming locations. Enjoy Movies! This week we look back for the 35th anniversary of The Untouchables. It tells the story of Elliot Ness and his quest to take down Al Capone, whose gang used American's prohibition laws to gain power and money in the 1930's. Make sure to read Jay's Cinemanalysis article about The Untouchables on RetroZap.com. Morality themes are just one of the many reasons this movie became legendary. Brian De Palma used his classic filmmaking skills to tell this story in a dramatic and intriguing way. And the actors' performances created the tension that kept the audiences intrigued, even though we knew some of the outcomes of the history. Kevin Costner plays Elliot Ness in one of his early film roles. Ness was the Federal Agent tasked to clean up Chicago in the 30's Robert DeNiro plays Al Capone. He really got into his role. He even wore the same type of underwear as Capone. His performance was downright scary as you watched and wondered how far the gangster would go. And then there's Sean Connery. His role as Jim Malone won him his only Oscar. He was a tough beat cop that helped Ness take down the bad guys in the ‘Chicago way'. Listen in as we discuss what made this such a great movie and why you should see it again. Have you seen The Untouchables? What did you think? Are you reading all the show notes? Cam the Provocateur and Agent Scott from SpyHards podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Cam's choice The Untouchables. The Untouchables is the 1987 Brian De Palma's Prohibition-era gangster film, loosely based on the activities of Al Capone and ‘The Untouchables' - an enforcement group led by Eliot Ness who helped bring down Capone. It stars Robert De Niro as Al Capone, Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, Andy García as George Stone, Charles Martin Smith as Oscar Wallace and Sean Connery (in an Oscar-winning role) as Jim Malone. Pretty violent for its day - it opens with a child being blown up and there is the notorious baseball bat scene it also plays fast and loose with the real historical moments from the 1930s. But this is De Palma and The Untouchables makes up for historical inaccuracy with spectacular set pieces, for example, Battleship Potemkin homage of the Odessa Steps sequence. The Untouchables is also notable for Connery's “Irish” accent, voted by Empire Magazine as the worst accent on film, however, Connery steals every scene he is in and the accent is just about forgivable. [supsystic-tables id=240] First-time watcher Scott was dubious going in but gave it a full five (a six if he could!) for recommendability - same as Cam, Helen and Kobi giving it full marks for that category. The Untouchables scores highly across all Flixwatcher categories to score an impressive 4.20 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Untouchables? What did you think? The industry was rocked by the recent passing of Hollywood great Sir Sean Connery, one of the greatest actors in the industry. He is most commonly known as the first and original James Bond, launching the wildly popular, currently seven-decade long-running franchise. He has played the character in seven movies which effectively launched him into superstardom. After retiring from Bond, he worked in various other acclaimed bodies of work before joining yet another popular franchise, Indiana Jones. He won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Jim Malone in the 1987 movie The Untouchables, which also starred Robert De Niro and Kevin Costner. Given his wildly successful career and his famously brash personality, in this piece, we will dive into the personality that was Sean Connery. Sean Connery passed away on Halloween of this year. As a child (Roland here) there was no one i ever wanted to be more than Sean. As i grew up the fascination never left. Bond, James Bond.
Sean Connery, the Scottish actor whose five-decade-long movie career was dominated by the role of James Bond, has died at the age of 90, according to his publicist. The actor "died peacefully in his sleep," publicist Nancy Seltzer said in a statement Saturday."His wife Micheline and his two sons, Jason and Stephane have confirmed that he died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family. There will be a private ceremony followed by a memorial yet to be planned once the virus has ended," the statement said.Connery, who was awarded a knighthood in 2000 for his contribution to the arts, played the British spy in seven movies, beginning with "Dr. No" in 1962, the first of the Bond movies. He wasn't just Bond, of course. Connery starred in an Alfred Hitchcock film, 1964's "Marnie," opposite Tippi Hedren; was part of the all-star cast in 1974's "Murder on the Orient Express"; played Indiana Jones' father, in 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"; and won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance as Chicago cop Jim Malone in the 1987 film "The Untouchables."But like so many characters in the Bond films, he could never quite escape 007. He gave up the role twice before finally ending his involvement with 1983's puckishly titled "Never Say Never Again."Sean Connery as James Bond in the film Dr No, 1962. Photo / FileJames Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said they were "devastated" by the news of Connery's death in a statement posted to the official 007 Twitter account."He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words "The name's Bond... James Bond" -- he revolutionized the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent," the producers said."He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him."Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was "heartbroken" to hear of Connery's death."Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons," she said in a statement. "Sean was born into a working class Edinburgh family and through talent and sheer hard work, became a film icon and one of the world's most accomplished actors."Sturgeon also paid tribute to Connery as "a patriotic and proud Scot," saying it was a privilege to have known him. "He was a lifelong advocate of an independent Scotland and those of us who share that belief owe him a great debt of gratitude," she said.Actor Daniel Craig, the most recent Bond, said Connery had "defined an era and a style" and was one of cinema's true greats."The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster. The problem in interviews of this sort is to get across the fact, without breaking your arse, that one is not Bond, that one was functioning reasonably well before Bond and that one is going to function reasonably well after Bond," he said. *SHOW TIMESTAMPS FEATURED AT THE END*In this episode Gerry welcomes on veteran MLB Strength Coach Jim Malone (currently head strength coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates). Jim has a wealth of experience in strength and conditioning having spent over 25 years as a coach at the collegiate, minor league and professional level. The conversation starts with Jim discussing some of his earliest influences in strength and conditioning and what shaped his philosophies (also talks about those philosophies and the simplicity of sprinting to get fast, lifting heavy to get strong and promoting proper movement). The two talk about Jim's power lifting background and what training for powerlifting at a young age taught him and what he learned from the older lifters around him.The discussion then turns to Jim's climb through the ranks as a strength coach. From starting at Division III University of Rochester as a hybrid defensive line and strength coach to working all the way to the MLB (and everything in between including other colleges and minor league baseball), the two take an introspective look at the changing of the times with training and what Jim experienced as a strength coach in the new frontier of strength training for the world of baseball. To finish, Jim gives his opinion on the marriage of experience and new technology/methods (the more things change the more they stay the same), and gives his advice for any aspiring or young coaches in the industry. All this and more on this episode of Muscles and Management!Timestamps9:00- How Jim Malone Started His Career in Strength and Conditioning13:10- Jim’s Earliest Training Mindset18:10- Overtraining21:21- Training Now vs. 20 Years Ago24:10- Jim’s Decision to Coach29:35- Jim’s First Programming Style for His Athletes34:30- How to Deal with Bigger Groups as the Lone Coach37:09- Holding Athletes Accountable39:28- Jim’s Move to Columbia University41:10- Jim’s Start In Baseball49:55- Working with a Sport You Aren’t as Familiar with54:00- Adapting to Different Situations57:36- Strategies for When Your Athletes Leave for the Offseason1:01:05- New Age of Relationships With Young Athletes1:05:00- Dealing with the Moving Parts of an Athlete's Life1:06:48- The Strength Coaching Industry is a Saturated Field1:15:33- Helping Athletes Deal with Bad Days1:18:24- How Tech Has Changed Strength Training1:21:12- Data Is Powerful, but Has to be Used Correctly1:29:04- Jim’s Tips to Get Your Foot in the Door as a Young CoachSupport the show (http://www.challengerstrength.com)

In the late 80s, brothers Bert and John Jacobs were living as nomads, traveling from college to college selling t-shirts out of their van. It wasn't a sustainable living – until one day, they created a new design. It was a simple sketch of a grinning face, with three words printed underneath: Life Is Good. The optimistic message was deeply personal to the brothers, who grew up in what they describe as a dysfunctional home – and it also resonated with customers, who started buying Life Is Good designs printed on just about anything, from towels to tire covers. Today, the Life Is Good Company has a reported annual revenue of $100 million. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," Jim Malone of CounterEv Furniture describes how he turns reclaimed wood from bowling alleys into tables and chairs for fast-casual restaurants.

I had the opportunity ro watch one of my favorite movies, The Untouchables and to reflect on one of the key quotes of the movie for me... "What are you prepared to do?" This movie centers around Prohibition in America, a time when the manufacturing and consumption of alcohol was illegal. Al capone establishes an illegal alcohol empire by manufacruing and selling liquor on the black market. Elliot Ness is a federal agent who enlists the help of Jim Malone, a Chicago police officer to help him catch and arrest Capone. Malone wants to know exactly what Ness is willing to do to convict Capone. This phrase... "What are you prepared to do?" reminds me that in moving forward I might have to do things that I never thought that I should or could do in starting our continuing my grief recovery process - something I simply call "being comfortable being uncomfortable." It's being open to the possibility that you can live through your pain and just simply live again and that it might be difficult and painful doing so. A record number of US voters headed to the polls this week to elect a new Congress. While Republicans held the Senate, the Democrats seized control of the House. On the next edition of Encounter, John Fortier, from the Bipartisan Policy Center, and Jim Kessler, from Third Way, examine the midterm election results with host Jim Malone.
After contentious Senate confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh, US President Donald Trump's nominee to replace Supreme Court "swing" Justice Anthony Kennedy, host Carol Castiel and VOA Senior National Correspondent, Jim Malone, speak with former Supreme Court law clerk Jamil Jaffer. Jaffer, who teaches law at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University, laments the increasing politicization of Supreme Court nominations and hearings. However, unlike some Senate Democrats, he does not believe Kavanaugh, were he to be confirmed, would necessarily move the direction of the high court to the right on critical issues such as abortion rights, gay rights, affirmative action or the scope of executive power.
Anne from Pikapi Podcast helps me compare the ending themes to Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, where Puffy AmiYumi and Jim Malone go head-to-head. After the outro, the two of us have some...interesting thoughts on the movie itself. Links: Pikapi Podcast: http://pikapipodcast.blogspot.com/

In this episode, Paul Fioravanti, Managing Director and Partner with QORVAL, discusses how one of the issues facing business owners today is acknowledging their limitations and the fact that they don't have all the answers. This forces them to seek outside professional advice on a particular subject matter, especially when a company is experiencing a challenging time.Paul goes on to explain that one of the colossal mistakes made by private equity firms is that they have more money than experience, and when they acquire companies, they often don't retain key employees. This causes the business to go into a tailspin, since the key employees typically carry the most useful knowledge of the workings of the company. Retaining and nurturing these employees is vital to the success of the new venture. In this interview, Paul notes that one of his company's key principles in helping other companies flourish is the principle of objective perspective. This involves leveraging the background that you have while taking a deep dive into the company data and financials to develop a plan to make the company more money, or in rare cases, prevent them from going out of business.Since 2012, Paul has been Managing Director and Partner with QORVAL, a Florida-based based management advisory firm led by six-time Fortune 100 CEO Jim Malone, working on a variety of client challenges in a wide array of situations. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise from a variety of industries including publicly and privately held companies, wireless infrastructure, energy and utility companies, construction and infrastructure services, manufacturing, technology, healthcare, marine, transportation logistics and equipment rental companies. He has worked on consulting engagements, spearheaded successful startups, turnarounds, and post-merger integrations. He most recently led the turnaround and sale of the one of the largest NYC metro based wireless infrastructure groups, which was successfully sold to a $4 billion private equity group, and along with Jim Malone in 2015 led the turnaround and sale of a $250 million recreational marine vessel manufacturer. To learn more about Paul, visit http://QORVAL.com.Main Street Mavericks Radio with Joel Helferhttp://businessinnovatorsradio.com/main-street-mavericks-radio-with-joel-helfer/

Jim has been a story lover as long as he can remember. He spent two decades teaching at high schools and colleges in the U.S. and abroad. But what he really wanted to do was TELL stories. He frequently promised himself he’d use school recesses to "write every day" – but almost never did. His 2008 marriage - and a subsequent relocation - made it necessary to abandon the teaching post. He took an office job and suddenly had very little time to write. It was just the break he needed. A 40-minute train commute twice a day, and a 1-hour lunch break, were his only "guaranteed" writing times. This made it necessary to use every minute available. Within a year he’d written what he considers his best work to date – an original screenplay, "Turning Two," that is currently in development for production in late 2015. More importantly, he'd developed a discipline and a dedication to his craft he'd never known before. Earlier this year he decided to abandon the office job completely, and on September 1 made the leap of faith, to pursue storytelling full time.
