John Sweeney is a race car driver who competes in the Historic Motor Sports Association which requires the cars to be historically correct based on the period of time the cars raced in. That means that the memories of the fans who watched these cars raced back in the day, get to see them in the glorious liveries that they remember. We caught up with Sweeney at the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach where he was scheduled to compete in the Pennzoil Indy car that John Andretti originally raced for Jim Hall. His story at Long Beach is quite convoluted on many fronts and includes yours truly getting some fantastic pit work from him and his crew! John explains everything well and is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet. The respect he has for his crew and the sport is impressive. Enjoy!

Evening With A Legend is a series of presentations exclusive to Legends of the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans giving us an opportunity to bring a piece of Le Mans to you. By sharing stories and highlights of the big event, you get a chance to become part of the Legend of Le Mans with guests from different eras of over 100 years of racing. In 1978, Jim Busby debut in the Le Mans 24H in a Porsche 935 from Kremer Racing, and finished in 6th position overall. His enduring association with BFGoodrich began with the 1982 Le Mans 24H when his Porsche 924 Carrera GTR won the GT class using BFG's road-specification tires; and they remain his sponsors and tire suppliers during his 1984 return to Le Mans with a Group C2 Lola-Mazda. In subsequent seasons he concentrated on managing the team, and perhaps his finest victory came in the 1989 Daytona 24H when John Andretti, Bob Wollek and Derek Bell shared the win in the Miller High Life Porsche 962. Jim sold his team in 1990, and move on to other projects and racing. Busby himself may not admit it, but he is regarded as one of the worlds best Porsche specialists from the 1970s and 80s. Jim now spends his time in Newport Beach, California with his wife. This Evening With A Legend was hosted by David Spitzer from the ACO USA. Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, they talk about Conor Daly and Ryan Hunter-Reay signing to DRR and recap the Kyle Larson test. They talk about how important it is to have Kyle Larson competing in the Indianapolis 500 this year. Kevin discusses the success of crossover drivers from NASCAR in the past, including Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, and John Andretti. They talked about the financial status of DRR, and the likelihood of the team going full time soon. Curt talks about the possibility of RC Enerson and Abel Motorsports competing at the 500 also.  Later in the first hour of the show, Kevin talks about a controversial topic, a charter system. Kevin explains that owners in other sports can cash out, something that does not exist in IndyCar under the current Leader Circle system. Kevin explains that that is the business of the sport, and how this could lead to guaranteed spots at the IMS. Curt lists some of the most surprising DNQs at IMS, and the importance of a team making the race.  Kevin rounds out the first hour previewing the second hour.   In the second hour of the show, Kevin talks about a new face that will be working for Ganassi next season in the position of lead engineer. Curt talks about a conversation he had with Will Power and how the hybrid engine is coming along, and how far they've come since the earlier tests. Power says that the hybrid engine will not take much adjustment. Kevin brings up F1's rejection of Andretti's team, and how harsh their rejection was. The main reason comes down to not wanting to split the money 11 ways.  During the second hour, Kevin reviews some tweets, and answers questions regarding the charter system. He also talks about some of the drivers he is most excited to see.  Kevin ends the show talking to Jackson Lee about what it's like racing at Daytona on the road course.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"I had just come off finishing a book with John Andretti in the final months of life. Sadly, John dies of colon cancer. When I was contacted about doing Al's story, he was very upfront. He said, 'I am going to be open; I am going to be honest and I am going to tell the truth." "I knew that it was going to be a challenge to write something that obviously had very, very tough issues and very, very tough stories about what he had gone through battling with drugs and alcohol." John Andretti passed away in late January after battling colon cancer, but not before he worked with Jade Gurss to produce his autobiography. Gurss takes us inside how the idea came about, the process of writing the book, and who John Andretti was. John had an incredible memory that led to retelling great stories; being the ‘other’ Andretti; if working on the book was therapeutic for John during his cancer battle; if there was anything left of the project when John passed; conversations that took place about the project should John not see it to completion; the balance in working with John and not overwhelming him; how Gurss makes sure each subject (Dale Earnhardt Jr., Darrell Waltrip, John Andretti) come through accurately; the hidden gems that Gurss enjoyed hearing; how much time he typically spends with a subject; laying out a book project and what it’s like to be deep into it; a story he would love to tell or thinks should be told; why racing fans should read this book, even if they weren’t John Andretti followers. Inside Victory Lane - The Daytona 500 Podcast

The 2000 Daytona 500, the 42nd running of the event, was held February 20 at Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida as the first race of both the 2000 NASCAR Winson Cup season and the 2000s decade. Dale Jarrett, the polesitter, led the most laps and won the race for the third time, after winning in 1993 and 1996. This was (to date) the last Daytona 500 to be televised by CBS and thus the last 500 broadcast for Buddy Baker and Ned Jarrett. Dave Marcis failed to qualify for the first time since 1968. The average green flag run for the race was confirmed by NASCAR officials as 29 laps. 12% of the event was held under a caution flag, mostly for oil, debris, and accidents. The green flag waved at 12:15 pm as pole-sitter Dale Jarrett led the field to the start of the race. However, he did not lead until lap 5 since he lost the first lap to outside polesitter Ricky Rudd. Mike Skinner took the lead away from Rudd on lap 2 and led two more. Bill Elliott briefly took the lead on lap 34, and then Jarrett regained it just before the first caution came out due to oil on a section of the track. The next green flag period lasted nearly 100 laps, in which Mark Martin took the lead and remained there for 65 laps. The second caution (also for oil) came on lap 134 and the third one came out on lap 157. During the latter caution, Johnny Benson, Jr. passed Martin for the lead as the lead-lap cars raced back to the yellow flag. Benson, Jr. led the next 39 laps, which included yet another caution on lap 170, once again for oil. On lap 192, several drivers, including Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler, and John Andretti, were involved in a crash right at the start-finish line. The race restarted with four laps to go, and Benson, Jr. looked as if he might capture his first cup series win in the biggest event of the season when the Fords of Jarrett and Jeff Burton ganged up on and passed him entering turn 3. One lap before the white flag was scheduled, Jimmy Spencer hit the front stretch wall, which allowed the final lap to be run under caution, securing a third Daytona 500 win for Jarrett, making him the fourth driver to win three or more Daytona 500s.

Team owner Jim Busby, driver John Andretti, Busby Racing crew chief Mike Colucci, and Porsche/Andial legend Alwin Springer bring their win at the 1989 Sunbank 24 Hours of Daytona to life on the 30th anniversary of their overall win in the gorgeous No. 67 Porsche 962. The two-car effort, with the lead No. 67 entry for the late hero Bob Wollek, all-time great Derek Bell, and Andretti, was complemented by a one-off second entry, the No. 68, as a tribute entry featuring the Holbert Racing crew and a 962 chassis for Mario and Michael Andretti, in the wake of Al Holbert's death a few months earlier. By the end of the 24 Hour, Porsche had won its 50th race with the 962, which would also serve as Bell's final 24-hour win, and with a long delay for fog, the windshield flying off with Andretti behind the wheel, and a titanic battle for victory with Jaguar that forced Wollek to close the race running at qualifying speeds, the 1989 event is loaded with amazing stories offered by our guests.  Visit https://www.facebook.com/MarshallPruettPodcast for our full podcast archives.
